In the last decade, there has been a continued effort to produce families of strong linearizations of a matrix polynomial $P(\lambda)$, regular and singular, with good properties, such as, being companion forms, allowing the recovery of eigenvectors of a regular $P(\lambda)$ in an easy way, allowing the computation of the minimal indices of a singular $P(\lambda)$ in an easy way, etc. As a consequence of this research, families such as the family of Fiedler pencils, the family of generalized Fiedler pencils (GFP), the family of Fiedler pencils with repetition, and the family of generalized Fiedler pencils with repetition (GFPR) were constructed. In particular, one of the goals was to find in these families structured linearizations of structured matrix polynomials. For example, if a matrix polynomial $P(\lambda)$ is symmetric (Hermitian), it is convenient to use linearizations of $P(\lambda)$ that are also symmetric (Hermitian). Both the family of GFP and the family of GFPR contain block-symmetric linearizations of $P(\lambda)$, which are symmetric (Hermitian) when $P(\lambda)$ is. Now the objective is to determine which of those structured linearizations have the best numerical properties. The main obstacle for this study is the fact that these pencils are defined implicitly as products of so-called elementary matrices. Recent papers in the literature had as a goal to provide an explicit block-structure for the pencils belonging to the family of Fiedler pencils and any of its further generalizations to solve this problem. In particular, it was shown that all GFP and GFPR, after permuting some block-rows and block-columns, belong to the family of extended block Kronecker pencils, which are defined explicitly in terms of their block-structure. Unfortunately, those permutations that transform a GFP or a GFPR into an extended block Kronecker pencil do not preserve the block-symmetric structure. Thus, in this paper, the family of block-minimal bases pencils, which is closely related to the family of extended block Kronecker pencils, and whose pencils are also defined in terms of their block-structure, is considered as a source of canonical forms for block-symmetric pencils. More precisely, four families of block-symmetric pencils which, under some generic nonsingularity conditions are block minimal bases pencils and strong linearizations of a matrix polynomial, are presented. It is shown that the block-symmetric GFP and GFPR, after some row and column permutations, belong to the union of these four families. Furthermore, it is shown that, when $P(\lambda)$ is a complex matrix polynomial, any block-symmetric GFP and GFPR is permutationally congruent to a pencil in some of these four families. Hence, these four families of pencils provide an alternative but explicit approach to the block-symmetric Fiedler-like pencils existing in the literature.

The complete eigenvalue problem associated with a rectangular matrix polynomial is typically solved via the technique of linearization. This work introduces the concept of generalized linearizations of rectangular matrix polynomials. For a given rectangular matrix polynomial, it also proposes vector spaces of rectangular matrix pencils with the property that almost every pencil is a generalized linearization of the matrix polynomial which can then be used to solve the complete eigenvalue problem associated with the polynomial. The properties of these vector spaces are similar to those introduced in the literature for square matrix polynomials and in fact coincide with them when the matrix polynomial is square. Further, almost every pencil in these spaces can be `trimmed' to form many smaller pencils that are strong linearizations of the matrix polynomial which readily yield solutions of the complete eigenvalue problem for the polynomial. These linearizations are easier to construct and are often smaller than the Fiedler linearizations introduced in the literature for rectangular matrix polynomials. Additionally, a global backward error analysis applied to these linearizations shows that they provide a wide choice of linearizations with respect to which the complete polynomial eigenvalue problem can be solved in a globally backward stable manner.

Unlike other sharp objects, pens and pencils are readily available to children both at home and school. Although case reports are published, no series of pen or pencil injuries have been reported in the recent literature. We therefore reviewed the incidence and injury profiles of writing instruments as compared with other sources of penetrating trauma. The trauma registry from a large urban pediatric hospital system was queried for nonmissile, nonbite penetrating injuries from 2005 through 2009. Retrospective data was collected on demographics, injuries, operations, admissions, and mortalities. Additionally, data regarding pen and pencil injuries from 2009 to 2010 were collected prospectively, and one case from 2003 was included retrospectively. Fourteen injuries from writing instruments were seen and involved the head and neck (9), chest (1), bladder/perineum (2), and extremities (2). Eleven children were admitted and eight required surgical intervention. One child died from a transhemispheric brain injury after intraorbital penetration by a pencil. Penetrating trauma from writing instruments is not an uncommon source of injury and often requires surgical intervention to remove the object. Injuries from pens and pencils can be severe or even fatal. Appropriate parent and teacher education regarding the potential risks may help to prevent such injuries.

In this paper, we propose a new definition of the pseudo-spectrum for operator pencils, which is associated with two bounded operators [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] defined in a Hilbert space. Unlike other definitions available in the literature, we prove, under specific conditions on [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], that the pseudo-spectrum for operator pencils is equal to an [Formula: see text]-neighborhood of the generalized spectrum. Moreover, we demonstrate how to use this concept to redefine the pseudo-spectrum of an unbounded operator. We illustrate its usefulness through a numerical example dealing with the Schrödinger operator.

Abstract This essay argues that the pencil, which became increasingly available in the United States during the antebellum decades, allowed writers to break from scriptural conventions and explore alternative selves because it afforded them the ability to write quickly, continuously, and on the move. Through readings of the manuscripts of John Washington, Margaret Fuller, and Walt Whitman, this article demonstrates how the pencil facilitated such exploration by configuring language, instrument, and corporeal gesture in ways that suited the modernizing nation. The essay draws its method from a theoretical model known in Germany as the Schreibszene (writing scene), which demonstrates how archival scholars can explore the specific affordances of writing media and the scriptural experiments that may emerge from their use.

The eye may be injured by various penetrating and non-penetrating injuries like sticks, pencils, rods, gunshot and chopsticks. Self-inflicted gunshot injuries have been rarely reported in literature. This case is interesting in multiple aspects which include poverty, lack of education and the failure of government to ensure control of the use of firearms in Nepal. We report a case of self-inflicted gun injury which was managed successfully.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has plagued since the beginning of this year, has shifted life habits, including study habits. They have changed from using hard file-based media (books, paper, pens, and pencils) to soft file media (network-based media) because students must learn from home. The purpose of this paper is to describe the concept of learning habits integrated with Islamic Learning Habituation through the implementation of the Al-Qur'an verses, containing the Prophet's parenting style by presenting a sense of muraqabah (the supervision of Allah SWT). This research method used text study. The research's nature was descriptive analysis research with idealistic patterns in reducing the Al-Qur'an verses and other literature to find solutions to research problems. The literature search results found that muraqabah's feelings in children would result in Islamic learning habits, namely learning practices that prioritized honesty, trust, and responsibility when studying online without parents' company.

The propagation of primary discontinuities in initial value problems for linear delay differential-algebraic equations (DDAEs) is discussed. Based on the (quasi-) Weierstra{\ss} form for regular matrix pencils, a complete characterization of the different propagation types is given and algebraic criteria in terms of the matrices are developed. The analysis, which is based on the method of steps, takes into account all possible inhomogeneities and history functions and thus serves as a worst-case scenario. Moreover, it reveals possible hidden delays in the DDAE and allows to study exponential stability of the DDAE based on the spectral abscissa. The new classification for DDAEs is compared to existing approaches in the literature and the impact of splicing conditions on the classification is studied.

Abstract Objective The Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT) has the potential to assess executive function deficits commonly associated with ADHD. While commonly scored using the visuospatial criterion established in the Qualitative Scoring System (QSS), alternative methods have incorporated administration using colored pencils to evaluate planning and organization. Existing literature has discouraged administration using the colored pencil approach given suggestion that distractibility will impair performance. The current study challenged the assumption that individuals with distractibility should not be exposed to color administration. Methods Data was extracted from files of ADHD individuals previously assessed at a southern Florida hospital. A total of 25 participants (11 females and 14 males) were included in the analysis. Methods of analysis included independent t-tests and ANOVA to explore moderating factors of age, sex, race and diagnostic presentation. Results This study found that performance across the various parts of the test were not significantly different based on administration method (t = −1.021, p = 0.318, 95% CI: −4.3755, 1.4845). Interestingly, an ANOVA revealed no significant differences between the broad demographic groups in their performance. Independent t-test did not indicate that the RCFT performance could differentiate between types of ADHD (t = 0.118, p = 0.907, 95% CI: −2.8420, 3.1862). Conclusion In contrast to the RCFT manual, the results of the data analysis revealed no significant differences between administration methods in a highly inattentive population group. This study provides the basis for the introduction of studying the RCFT as a diagnostic tool for re-assessing ADHD throughout adulthood.

Cette étude prend son point de départ dans la doctrine de l’art pour l’art telle qu’elle est défendue par Oscar Wilde. Redéfinissant le rapport de l’art au réel, l’autonomie de l’esthétique consacre le culte de la beauté et sape la notion de représentation en tant que principe régissant la création occidentale. Cette remise en cause a de profondes implications en ce qui concerne les relations interartistiques ; l’objectif principal de ce travail est d’analyser dans quelle mesure elle en refaçonne les modalités. En tant que théoricien, Wilde s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un débat millénaire portant sur l’analogie entre les arts. Prenant à rebours la tradition classique de l’ut pictura poesis, il renouvelle les rivalités entre les disciplines en proposant de nouveaux modèles et de nouvelles correspondances. En outre, il propose une théorie de la critique d’art qui élève le critique au rang d’artiste, remodelant ainsi les relations qu’entretiennent le texte et l’image. Ses comptes-rendus des expositions de la Grosvenor Gallery recèlent les prémisses d’une écriture dans laquelle l’œuvre d’art n’est plus objet d’étude, mais source d’inspiration. En dernière instance, c’est un idéal de création que vient fonder la critique, idéal qui repose sur la circulation entre les œuvres par-delà les disciplines. Enfin, la théorie de Wilde s’inscrit dans le prolongement de querelles contemporaines et fait écho aux pratiques du mouvement esthétique, qui multiplie les exemples de rencontres entre la littérature, la musique, les beaux-arts et les arts décoratifs. The starting point of this study is the doctrine of art for art’s sake as it is defended by Oscar Wilde. The autonomy of aesthetics redefines the relationship between art and life, as it celebrates the cult of beauty and as it undermines the notion of representation understood as the main principle governing artistic creation in the Western tradition. This study sets out to analyze to what extent the doctrine refashions the relations between the arts. Wilde indeed reignites a century-old debate on the analogy between the arts. He challenges the classical tradition of ut pictura poesis and rekindles the rivalries between artistic disciplines by devising new models and correspondences. Furthermore, he formulates a theory about art criticism in which the critic is elevated to the rank of artist, thus remodeling the relations between text and image. His reviews of the exhibitions of the Grosvenor Gallery are preludes to a type of writing in which the work of art is not an object of study, but is taken as a source of inspiration. Wilde’s idea of criticism ultimately serves as the basis for a theory of creation which relies on circulation between works of art and across disciplines. Finally, Wilde’s theory engages in contemporary arguments and echoes the practices of the Aesthetic Movement, which features numerous instances of cross-fertilization between literature, music, the fine arts and the decorative arts. In addition to adopting a comparative approach to those generic transpositions and dialogues, this dissertation shall examine how Wilde’s ideal of interartistic inspiration firmly entrenches the self-sufficiency of the artistic realm

The growth of telemedicine has been rapid. Initially, telemedicine was seen as a way to bring services to remote areas that lacked access to aspects of health­care delivered through traditional means. This view of telemedicine has changed. Current views toward telemedicine have broadened, with telemedicine now viewed as an effective way to deliver various health services and to bring together patients and providers to increase access to care in various locations and communities. Reimbursement has been a challenge for some aspects of telemedicine development. Initially, Medicare limited reimbursement for telehealth to designated underserved areas. This approach to telehealth reimbursement has lagged behind developments in the field and has been challenged by various groups and legislative initiatives. In April 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released its Managed Care Final Rule (Federal Register, 2016) with wording that potentially will permit reimbursement for expanded telemedicine-based services. The revised standards, in attempting to ensure that Medicaid beneficiaries have reasonable access to care, acknowledge a role for technology and telemedicine. The impact the new standards will have on the development of telemedicine throughout the United States will become evident with time. Tele-mental health has grown along with other aspects of remote healthcare delivery. Extant literature supports the use of remotely delivered telehealth for a variety of conditions and services, including remote psychiatric consultation, diagnosis, and various therapies (Myers & Turvey, 2012; Shore, 2013). However, the idea that one can provide an adequate neuropsychological evaluation remotely is newer and less intuitive, and would appear to have obvious challenges. Neuropsychological examinations frequently require the use of test stimuli that the examinee has to handle and manage, such as blocks, pencils, or other manipulatives. Some tests, such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (Heaton, 2003), have been adapted for computer but not for Internet-based or remote administration. In some approaches to neuropsychological assessment, the examiner takes careful note of the specific strategies examinees employ when attempting to perform tasks. Hence, performing an examination when the examiner and the patient are in different locations can seem daunting.

Survey responses differ between direct paper and pencil (manual) administration and Internet-based (electronic) survey data collection methods. Social dynamics (issues) play an important role in influencing respondent participation. A review of the existing literature suggests that the medium and administration context affect differences in instrument performance parameters, i.e., response rate, participation ease, attractiveness of survey, novelty effect, administrative costs, response flexibility, response time, population size, sample bias, instrument validity, the management of non-response data, and response error. This chapter attempts to identify, describe and map the differences between survey data collection media as a function of selected social variables.

This chapter examines the pre-existing definitions of what corruption entails starting from the abuse of public office for private authority to forms of political and divisional advantage. Definitions of police corruption follow to analyse a variety of activities that qualify as police malfeasance related to famously cited criminological literature concerning typologies. The typologies list the activities that range from corruption of authority, kickbacks and finally planting of evidence (that includes drugs). Integrity violations are then examined to cover a broader range of police malpractices such as moonlighting and criminal activity in private time. Moreover, the debate of bending rules which includes the use of the ‘magic pencil’, perjury or excessive means of coercion for a noble and/or justified outcome as part of departmental advantage is reached.

This article describes how a neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation are typically carried out using paper-and-pencil tools. However, these protocols cannot effectively evaluate the subject's performance of daily activities. More recently, the increasing accessibility of new and powerful technology has presented new possibilities. Virtual reality is one of the most promising tools with the increasing ecologicity in the neuropsychological field. The availability of new portable instruments has increased the accessibility and usability of this technology. Using this frame, the changes that have occurred over time in the neuropsychological practice up to the most recent VR-based tools have been explored. In particular, the focus will be on executive functions as the most sensitive cognitive domain within the ecological validity of the tools. In accordance with the literature, the authors show the potential for the use of virtual reality in the assessment and rehabilitation of executive functions, highlighting the advantages, limitations, and potential future challenges.

An increasing number of longitudinal studies worldwide cover societal change over decades. The fieldwork of these panel surveys experienced notable technological advancements and often switched modes of data collection over time. A large body of literature documents that the mode of data collection matters for respondent behaviour. However, empirical evidence of mode effects on estimates of reliability and validity is surprisingly scarce. This chapter proposes to adapt the experimental multitrait–multimethod (MTMM) approach to observational data. For this purpose, we use the longitudinal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), an annual panel study started in 1984 with interviewer-administered paper-and-pencil interviews and nowadays additionally using computer-assisted personal interviewing as well as self-administered questionnaires, both mailed and web-based. While mode changes in the SOEP are not randomly assigned to respondents, we augment our approach by propensity score weighting to reduce selection bias in estimates of mode effects. Our analysis suggests moderate but statistically significant differences in reliability and validity estimates between modes of data collection.

Virtual Reality is one of the most promising tools in the development of new methods for neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation. Neuropsychological assessment is typically carried out by administering paper-and-pencil tests to patients. However, these tests have some limitations, due to the fact that they are not effectively able to evaluate the subject's performance of daily activities. To cope with this void, neuropsychologists base their evaluation on their clinical experience, often successfully. Nevertheless, this is not an evidence-based practice, thus it is not considered optimal from a medical decision-making perspective. More recently, however, the increasing accessibility of advanced technology such as virtual reality has opened new possibilities for neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation. Starting with this frame, the chapter explores the changes that have occurred over time in the neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation up to the most recent VR-based tools. In particular, we will present a VR-based PC tool for the assessment of executive functions, and a VR-based mobile tool for the assessment and rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect. In accordance with the literature, we show the potential for virtual reality, highlighting the advantages, limitations, and the possible future challenges.

Screw systems composed of three planar pencils of lines are closely related to the singularity analysis of a number of 3-legged parallel manipulators in which the passive joints in each leg are a spherical joint and a single-DOF (degree-of-freedom) kinematic joint or generalized kinematic joint. This paper systematically classifies the screw systems composed of three planar pencils of lines. The classification is based on the intersection of two planar pencils of lines, the classification of screw systems of order 2, and the reciprocal screw system of the three planar pencils of lines. The classification in this paper is more comprehensive than those in the literature. The above results are illustrated using CAD figures. This work may help readers better understand the geometric characteristics of the singular configuration of a number of 3-legged parallel manipulators.

Graphical communication has traditionally been a basic part of the mechanical engineer’s education. The production and reading of drawings have long been considered an attribute of ‘literate’ engineers. Today, that assumption is under attack, as is the very definition of a drafting course. Typical questions include “Why should we teach pencil/paper drawing in an AutoCAD age?” “Why not just teach solids modeling and forget the old-fashioned stuff?” At Mercer University we teach in the sophomore year a single two-semester-hour laboratory course containing three modules: pencil-and-paper drawing, computer-aided drawing, and solids modeling. The course attempts to balance the presentation and mastery of traditional descriptive geometry principles and skills with the need to prepare engineers for practice. The goal in each module is to teach enough skill to provide a base for experience and future learning in both course work and professional practice. The approach in each module is to start with the basic skills of that particular method, and progress to the production of working and assembly drawings. Rationale and learning objectives for the course are presented, as well as representative examples of assignments and projects.

The human being in the environments of modern technology has to endure stresses of many and varied kinds of vibrations [1]. Measuring vibration is an important tool in rehabilitation and biomechanical fields of research. We have proposed image processing as a new method to record and determine the frequency response of human body. The subjects were exposed to whole body periodical vibration while standing on a shaking table. Two digital camcorders were used to capture the motion of colored pencil-dot markers on the skin of human body (forehead) and on the edge of the shaking table. After color spotting each frame, the binary image results were processed using new circle factor criteria proposed in this work, for fast finding circles based on second order statistics. The extracted points were calibrated using our own extended version of the direct linear transformation (DLT) method. We subsequently used Borland Delphi 5.0 language to develop useful software for measuring and analyzing human body vibration. As a result, it was clear that the proposed method was lower noise-sensitive in comparison to accelerometer. In order to investigate the validity of the software, the obtained mechanical impedance of the body were compared with other investigations in literature and showed to be compatible. The main advantage of this method is working with a simple user-familiar hardware with no external device attached to the subject and also a user-friendly-software.
