Andrew Radford, Syntactic theory and the structure of English: a minimalist approach. Cambridge textbooks in linguistics. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1997. Pp. xii + 558. Hardback £50, US$69.95, ISBN 0 521 47125 7; paperback £16.95, US$24.95, ISBN 0 521 47707 7.Until recently I was convinced that by far the best textbook ever written on Generative Grammar was Perlmutter and Soames' Syntactic argumentation and the structure of English (1979). Unfortunately, the theory advanced there died out. As concerns its successor, namely GB-theory, I still believe that Andrew Radford's pioneering Transformational syntax (1981) is one of the best introductions to Chomsky's Pisa lectures, despite the plethora of competing textbooks that have appeared over the years. Now that Radford has presented his most recent book, Syntactic theory and the structure of English, I am inclined to believe that it should be considered a competitor to Perlmutter and Soames' book. Not only the similarity to Perlmutter and Soames' title, but also the pedagogical and systematic orientation of the new book invites comparison. As both books meet the highest standards with regard to clarity of expression and exposition, I recommend Radford's book as the best textbook for up-to-date syntactic theory, and I am convinced that it will play the same influential role as an introduction to the Minimalist theory as did the 1981 book for GB theory.

AbstractBased on the magnitude–redshift diagram for the sample of supernovae Ia analyzed by Perlmutter et al. (1999), Davis & Lineweaver (2004) ruled out the special relativistic interpretation of cosmological redshifts at a confidence level of 23σ. Here, we critically reassess this result. Special relativity is known to describe the dynamics of an empty universe, by means of the Milne kinematic model. Applying only special relativistic concepts, we derive the angular diameter distance and the luminosity distance in the Milne model. In particular, in this model we do not use the underlying metric in its Robertson–Walker form, so our exposition is useful for readers without any knowledge of general relativity. We do however, explicitly use the special relativistic Doppler formula for redshift. We apply the derived luminosity distance to the magnitude–redshift diagram for supernovae Ia of Perlmutter et al. (1999) and show that special relativity fits the data much better than that claimed by Davis & Lineweaver. Specifically, using these data alone, the Milne model is ruled out only at a 2σ level. Alhough not a viable cosmological model, in the context of current research on supernovae Ia it remains a useful reference model when comparing predictions of various cosmological models.

Recent results on supernovae as standard candles (Riess et al. 1998; Perlmutter et al. 1999) and on CMB anisotropy (Lineweaver 1998) indicate that ΩM ≍ 0.3-0.4, Ωv ≍ 0.6-0.7, ΩM + Ωv ≍ 1. By definition, ΩM = ρM/ρcr, ΩV = ρv/ρcr, where ρM is the matter density, ρv is the vacuum density; the critical density ρcr = 3H2/8πG; H is the Hubble parameter, G is the gravitational constant. In the standard Friedmann-Lemaître cosmologies, these results seriously constrain the non-dimensional cosmological constant (as defined below): Δ ≫ 1, meaning that the Universe expands forever. If a scalar field is present, the future evolution may be different.

Resumen

The Observed Perlmutter-Riess Acceleration (OPRA) implies that the expansion of the Universe is currently increasing and is motivation for the so-called phantom energy models. We consider the dynamics of phantom scalar field models. An important physical time constraint, which can be used to rule out many cosmological models, is obtained from the condition that all forms of energy density, including the field causing OPRA (e.g., the phantom field), must be non-negligible for an extended period, which is conservatively estimated to be of the order of a few Gyr. We find that this physical time constraint cannot be satisfied in conventional phantom cosmological models.

Resumen

We have deduced that bulk viscous Bianchi type I barotropic fluid cosmological model with varying $\Lambda$ and functional relation on hubble parameter by solving the field equations bimetric theory of gravitation. It is observed that our model has exponentially accelerating expansion at late time starting with decelerating expansion which agreed the observation of Perlmutter (1998), Knop (2003), Tegmark (2004) and Spergel (2006). In the beginning, our model has more than three spatial-dimensions then it switched over to three-dimensional spatial geometry at late epoch of time and it is agreed with Borkar et al. (2013). Other geometrical and physical behavior of the model have been studied.

e21040 Background: Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults, despite its rare incidence of 5 per 1,000,000. UM metastasis (mets) occurs in approximately 50% of patients (pts). The published median survival from the time of mets is only 6 to 12 months (mos). To date there is no curative therapy for pts with mUM. Methods: This is a retrospective review of pts evaluated at NYU-PCC with UM between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2016. Data collected include: ophthalmic treatment, time from ophthalmic diagnosis, systemic metastatic sites, genetic mutations (muts), systemic treatment and survival. Results: During this 5-year interval, 100 UM pts were referred to NYU-PCC. 58 pts were diagnosed with high-risk primary T3/T4 sized tumors and remained disease-free during this period. For the remaining 42 pts that developed mUM, primary ophthalmic treatments included: 12 enucleations, 27 brachytherapy and 3 received none since they had synchronous UM and mUM. Therapy for mUM included liver-directed therapy (LDT) such as TACE, 90Y brachytherapy, or radiofrequency ablation; or systemic therapy. These mUM pts had a median survival of 17 mos. 20 mUM pts are male; 22 pts are female; Ages: 33-96; 24 deceased and 18 alive. Of the latter, 5 are NED and 13 are alive with disease on treatment. 24 deceased mUM pts treated initially with LDT lived on average 14 mos longer than those treated with any systemic therapy alone; pts with LDT had a median survival of 24 mos, compared to 10 mos for those treated only with systemic therapy (p = 0.0075). There was no correlation between time of ophthalmic diagnosis and time to onset of mets and survival (R2value 0.00243). Genetic analysis of met tumors was available on 9 pts. 3 of 5 pts with GNA11 muts are alive compared to 1 of 4 pts with GNAQ muts. Conclusions: Pts with mUM treated initially with LDT had significantly longer survival compared to pts treated with systemic therapy alone. Whether longer survival in these pts is an effect of LDT, earlier treatment of mets, or a more indolent disease remains to be determined. Our study demonstrates mUM pts survive an average of 17 mos, which is higher than historically reported. Significance of GNAQ or GNA11 requires further investigation.

La transitividad verbal supone para los estudiantes chinos una gran dificultad durante su aprendizaje de Español como Lengua Extranjera (E/LE). Les resulta confuso el uso de los verbos de comportamiento inestable. En la tradición gramatical, se distinguen verbos transitivos, intransitivos e impersonales. La Hipótesis Inacusativa (Perlmutter, 1978) divide los verbos intransitivos en inergativos e inacusativos. En este artículo se propone que el orden del sujeto y predicado, y el uso del participio pasivo o la voz media en español, se entienden con más facilidad con la introducción del concepto de verbos inacusativos, analizados desde la interfaz léxico-sintaxis. Ofrece una nueva perspectiva para la enseñanza de E/LE accesible para los estudiantes chinos.

The large luminosity (MV ≈ −19 ∼ −20) and the homogeneity in light curves and spectra of Type Ia supernovae(SNe Ia) have led to their use as distance indicators ultimately to determine the Hubble constant (H0). However, an increasing number of the observed samples from intermediate- and high-z (z ∼ 0.1 − 1) SN Ia survey projects(Hamuy et al. 1996, Perlmutter et al. 1997) have shown that there is a significant dispersion in the maximum brightness (∼ 0.4 mag) and the brighter-slower correlation between the brightness and the postmaximum decline rate, which was first pointed out by Phillips(1993). By taking the correlation into account, Hamuy et al.(1996) gave an estimate of H0 within the error bars half as much as previous ones.

The distinction of two types of intransitive verbs—unergatives (with underlying subjects) and unaccusatives (with underlying objects)—may not exist at early stages of L2 acquisition, both being syntactically represented as unergatives. This idea, referred to here as the Unaccusative Trap Hypothesis, provides an elegant developmental account for a variety of seemingly unrelated syntactic phenomena in L2 English, Japanese, and Chinese. Target language input, structural constraints on natural language linking rules, and linguistic properties of a learner's L1s shape stages in the reorganization of the lexical and syntactic components of interlanguage grammars. Although nonnative grammars may initially override the structural constraints postulated as the Unaccusative Hypothesis (Burzio, 1986; Perlmutter, 1978) and the Uniformity of Theta Assignment Hypothesis (Baker, 1988), at later developmental stages some may still achieve conformity with the norms of natural languages.

Relational Grammarians have proposed Union analyses for adversatives many languages. An odd asymmetry in base predicates contrasts Japanese (Dubinsky 1985), in which adversatives may not be formed on unaccusatives, and Indonesian (Kana 1986), in which adversatives may only be formed on unaccusatives. A close examination of adversatives in Javanese (a language closely related to Indonesian) resolves this asymmetry, revealing that Javanese adversatives (and by implication Indonesian adversatives) are best analyzed not as Unions but as passives. However, the passive analysis violates Perlmutter & Postal's (1984) I-Advancement Exclusiveness Law, which figures crucially in Dubinsky's elegant account of the distribution of Japanese adversatives. Gerdts' (1993a) Mapping Theory, rooted in an RG tradition, provides a solution, in which it is possible to capture the similarities of adversatives and other Javanese passives and at the same time preserve the insights of Dubinsky's analysis of Japanese.

The purpose of this paper is to help define and limit the role that temporal ordering plays in morphophonemic representation, syllable structure and phrases in American Sign Language (ASL). First, I will list the ways in which temporal ordering plays a role in morphophonemic structures. Second, I will show that temporal ordering plays a limited role in ASL phrases. Third, I will argue that neither temporal ordering nor segmentation plays a role in syllables, and the bulk of this paper will be devoted to motivating this syllable template. Stokoe (1960) and Stokoe et al. (1965) proposed that ASL is organised according to simultaneous phonemes, but since Liddell (1984) the importance of temporally ordered structure in sign structure has been emphasised by many researchers (Liddell & Johnson 1989; Sandler 1986, 1989; Perlmutter 1990, 1992; Corina 1990a, b; to name a few).

Resumen

We discuss observational constrains coming from supernovae imposed on the behaviour of the Randall–Sundrum models. We test the models using the Perlmutter SNIa data as well as the new Knop and Tonry/Barris samples. The data indicates that, under the assumption that we admit zero pressure dust matter on the brane, the cosmological constant is still needed to explain current observations. We estimate the model parameters using the best-fitting procedure and the likelihood method. The observations from supernovae give a large value of the density parameter for brane matter Ωλ,0≃0.01 as the best fit. For high redshifts z>1.2, the difference between the brane model and the ΛCDM (Perlmutter) model becomes detectable observationally. From the maximum likelihood method we obtained the favored value of Ωλ,0=0.004±0.016 for Ωk,0=0 and Ω m ,0=0.3. This gives the limit Ωλ,0<0.02 at 1σ level. While the model with brane effects is preferred by the supernovae type Ia data, the model without brane fluid is still statistically admissible. We also discuss how fit depends on restrictions of the sample, especially with respect to redshift criteria. We also pointed out the property of sensitive dependence of results with respect to the choice of ℳ parameter. For comparison the limit on brane effects which comes from CMB anisotropies and BBN is also obtained. The uncertainty in the location of the first peak gives a stronger limit Ωλ,0<1.0×10-12, whereas from BBN we obtain that Ωλ,0<1.0×10-27. However, both very strict limits are obtained with the assumption that brane effects do not change the physics in the pre-recombination era, while the SNIa limit is model independent. We demonstrate that the fit to supernovae data can also be obtained if we admit the phantom matter p=-(4/3)ϱ on the brane, where this matter mimics the influence of the cosmological constant. We show that phantom matter enlarges the age of the universe on the brane which is demanded in cosmology. Finally, we propose to check for dark radiation and brane tension by the application of the angular diameter of galaxies minimum value test.

Bianchi Type VI0 inflationary cosmological model with flat potential in General Relativity, is investigated. To get the deterministic solution in terms of cosmic time t, we assume that σ (shear) is proportional to expansion (θ) where [Formula: see text] Thus [Formula: see text], leads to A = Bn where A and B are metric potentials and n is a constant. We find that spatial volume increases with time. Hence inflationary scenario exists in the model. Since [Formula: see text] in general. Thus the model represents anisotropic universe throughout. However, if [Formula: see text] then the model isotropizes. This result matches with astronomical observations. The model represents decelerating and late time acceleration which matches with recent astronomical observations Riess et al. [29], Perlmutter et al. [30]. The model has Point Type singularity at [Formula: see text] (MacCallum [31]). The rate of Higg’s field (φ) decreases with time.

Abstract In early, simultaneous analyses of signs, [a_contact] is a multivalent feature pertaining to the movement parameter (cf. Friedman 1976). In models that make use of sequential units (Liddell and Johnson 1989, Sandler 1989, Perlmutter 1989, van der Hulst 1993) the valence of [contact] can be reduced to one. In comparing two types of sequential models I will show that one of them - the No-Movement model -is more adequate in accounting for the contact types proposed in Friedman (1976). By examining the consequences of the representation of the contact types in the No-Movement model of van der Hulst (1993) and further developments thereof (Crasborn 1995,1996; van der Hulst 1995, 1996; van der Kooij 1994, 1996; van der Kooij and Crasborn 1996). I will show that contact is a redundant property, predictable from the place specification of the sign. Being phonologically redundant, variation and non-distinctiveness of contact is correctly predicted.

Resumo: Tentarei mostrar, neste trabalho, sob a perspectiva da teoria gerativo-transformacional padrão, tal como exposta em Chomsky (1965),as condições slntáticas em que se processa, de um modo geral, a posposição do sujeito em português. Diferentemente de Perlmutter (1976), não me aterei apenas a sentenças com verbos do tipo de existir e seus para-sinônimos. Incluirei em minhas investigações outros tipos de verbos a fim de verificar se qualquer um deles impõe alguma restrição à transformação responsável pela posposição do sujeito. Além disso, será discutido o posicionamento do SN posposto dentro do Sintagma Predicativo (S.Pred.) que ele passa a integrar. Partirei do pressuposto de que sujeito é, na estrutura profunda, o primeiro SN da oração baseadando-me em Chomsky (1965), não me lnteressando averiguar se, com o deslocamento, o SN perde ou não o "status" de sujeito'. 'Vou admitir, ainda, sem maiores discussões, que a regra de Posposição do Sujeito (PS) é opcional e pós-cíclica.

The LZ collaboration aims to directly detect dark matter by using a liquid xenon Time Projection Chamber (TPC). In order to probe the dark matter signal, observed signals are compared with simulations that model the detector response. The most computationally expensive aspect of these simulations is the propagation of photons in the detector’s sensitive volume. For this reason, we propose to offload photon propagation modelling to the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), by integrating Opticks into the LZ simulations workflow. Opticks is a system which maps Geant4 geometry and photon generation steps to NVIDIA’s OptiX GPU raytracing framework. This paradigm shift could simultaneously achieve a massive speed-up and an increase in accuracy for LZ simulations. By using the technique of containerization through Shifter, we will produce a portable system to harness the NERSC supercomputing facilities, including the forthcoming Perlmutter supercomputer, and enable the GPU processing to handle different detector configurations. Prior experience with using Opticks to simulate JUNO indicates the potential for speed-up factors over 1000× for LZ, and by extension other experiments requiring photon propagation simulations.

The Unaccusative Hypothesis (Perlmutter 1978; Burzio 1986) posits that intransitive verbs are not homogenous, but can be further divided into unaccusative verbs and unergative verbs. This distinction has ever since become a topic of heated discussion not only in the field of theoretical linguistics, but also in applied linguistics. Oshita (1997, 2001) proposes the Unaccusative Trap Hypothesis to delineate the mental representation and developmental path of L2 acquisition of unaccusatives. This hypothesis suggests that unaccusatives are first misanalysed by L2 learners as unergatives and L2 learners have to undergo a three-stage process before they can truly acquire the distinction between unaccusatives and unergatives. This hypothesis also predicts a U-shaped pattern in the non-target passivization and avoidance of unaccusatives by L2 learners of different levels. This study is focused on the Unaccusative Trap Hypothesis with L2 English as its main example. It first of all gives a lengthy account of this hypothesis by introducing its framework, foundations, content and predictions. Then it points out that the Unaccusative Trap Hypothesis is theoretically innovative, but conceptually inadequate and empirically controversial. Finally, this study calls for more studies to test and improve the Unaccusative Trap Hypothesis.

Nous proposons d’envisager le moment présent de la dispute de couple comme un vécu de transe négative (Perlmutter & Sauer, 1986). La relation de couple est organisée à partir d’un mythe fondateur que les expériences douloureuses du passé et l’évolution des conjoints avec le temps peuvent remettre en question. Dans ce contexte d’insécurité, chez des sujets particulièrement réactifs, un mot peut alors déclencher une dispute qui plonge les sujets dans un état de transe négative. La répétition ou ritualisation de ces moments de transe entraînera l’extinction du mythe d’harmonie initial qui sera alors remplacé par des mythes de la discorde distincts pour chacun. Avec la perte du mythe commun, les conjoints perdent aussi la connexion qui les unissait et réécrivent alors leur histoire commune. Un extrait de l’entretien lors de la première séance de la thérapie du couple PaulEmma est analysé selon une approche phénoménologique. Nous retrouvons dans la narration de Paul et Emma des expériences d’induction, de transe et de fabrication de nouveaux mythes. L’attention clinique portée à ces niveaux d’expériences peut guider le thérapeute dans ses interventions pour aider le couple à retrouver sa fonction mythopoïétique et construire un nouveau mythe qu’ils pourront partager.

In this paper, we have presented a cosmological model that represents spatially homogenous and isotropic accelerating universe from the perspective of the latest developments begun by Perlmutter and Riess in cosmology. For this, Friedmann–Robertson–Walker (FRW) space–time metric is considered and our universe is assumed to be filled with two types of fluids. One is ordinary baryonic perfect fluid and the other one is mysterious and bizarre dark energy perfect fluid with negative pressure. This creates a repulsive field that produces acceleration in the universe. We have used 581 Union 2.1 compilation data to statistically estimate present values of cosmological parameters Ωde, Ωm, Ωk and equation of state parameter ωde for our model. We have used 31 datasets of observed values of Hubble constant for various redshifts to estimate the present value of Hubble constant H0. On the basis of these we have calculated the present age of the universe, densities, and deceleration parameter. Evolution of deceleration parameter shows that our universe has gone through an accelerating phase two times. In the beginning, and at present. We have also calculated Particle horizon and the time at which acceleration began. Our results are close to latest surveys.

ABSTRACT The idea of sonority in sign languages was treated by Perlmutter (1992) as perceptibility, a property of a segment that uses movement rather than one in which the hands stay in the same position. Sandler (1993) states that the visual salience of movement in sign languages plays a role similar to sonority in spoken languages. For Brentari (1998), perceptually, a sign is visible from considerable distances, and measurement of its visual sonority is based on the joints involved in its production. This work focuses on visual sonority in literature in Brazilian Sign Language and considers the relevance of manual and non-manual elements, rhythm, symmetry, the scale of signs, and the effect of video on this concept. Two signed stories “The King’s Parrot” and “Little Ping Pong Ball” were analysed, highlighting specific signs in which the use of joints, non-manual features, and other resources are influenced by the size of the performance space and the distance of the audience from the signing. Three types of ‘sonority’ were observed: in the movement of the whole body on the stage, in the size of arms and trunk movement, and in the hands. In addition to the joints, non-manual features, rhythm and symmetry play an important role in visual sonority and influence the viewer’s experience.

Previous research has documented qualitative changes in certain cognitive abilities during the older adult years, such as in short-term memory, perceptual and motor skills, and attentional capacities. Other work has suggested that a number of significant age-related changes, across a variety of cognitive abilities, are based on social experiences, such as occupational or recreational activities. The current study is based on earlier research by Perlmutter and her colleagues (1990) and examines age and skill-related differences among adults engaged in a social-recreational activity. BINGO players, ranging in age from nineteen to seventy-four, and having from less than two months to over twenty years of playing experience, were given a variety of psychometric, cognitive, and experimental measures. The participants were also observed as they played real BINGO games. No age-related differences were found on the psychometric or memory measures, suggesting that BINGO playing experience may have positive benefits for many older adults. Skilled players at all age levels were found to be more efficient in their game-playing actions. The oldest and most experienced players did not differ from the younger, equally experienced, players on the cognitive and skill-based tasks. These findings demonstrate the need to investigate adaptive competence in those situations in which social-environmental factors play a role in enhancing older adults' cognitive skills.
