Abstract Between 1833 and 1841 the Children’s Friend Society, a London-based philanthropic organization, sent some eight hundred children from England to the Cape, where they were apprenticed to local settlers. This article focuses on two of them: Alfred Brooks, aged thirteen or fourteen, and twelve-year-old Elizabeth Foulger. Both of these children appear in archival traces because they transgressed and were subsequently disciplined by their masters. This chapter examines Volkhovskii’s activities in the years immediately following his flight from Siberian Exile. After a few months in Canada, where he gave lectures to audiences about the plight of Russians who opposed the tsarist government, he moved to England where he was reunited with his old friend Sergei Stepniak. Stepniak had over the previous few years worked hard to encourage more positive views about Russian revolutionaries among the British public, helping to set up the Society of Friends of Russian Freedom and its newspaper Free Russia. The Society attracted much of its support from Liberal nonconformists like the influential solicitor Robert Spence Watson, although many Fabians also joined the Society, along with a small number of radical socialists such as William Morris. Following his arrival in London, Volkhovskii quickly became an important contributor to Free Russia, writing pieces on subjects ranging from the Russian police through to the plight of Siberian exiles, and often served as de facto editor in place of Stepniak. He also became close to some important literary figures in Britain, including Edward and Constance Garnett, encouraging Constance to learn Russian, which in turn set her on the path to becoming the leading translator of Russian literature in Britain. Volkhovskii was also active in the Russian Free Press Fund, which produced radical literature for distribution among Russian émigré communities and for smuggling into Russia itself. He edited the newssheet Letuchie listki which was designed to appeal to all elements in the Russian opposition movement, reflecting Volkhovskii’s view that greater unity was required among all those critical of the tsarist government, a perspective shared by Stepniak. Both men were careful when writing for a western audience to argue that members of the Russian revolutionary movement were typically interested in securing political reform rather than wholesale social and economic revolution.

Abstract This chapter demonstrates the unpredictability of émigré efforts to aid Russian political prisoners and exiles, which during the 1880s often seemed moribund only to episodically rise again. Even as Vera Zasulich worried that the efforts of the “Red Cross of the People’s Will” Foreign Branch were petering out in spring 1882, Pëtr Kropotkin and Nikolai Chaikovskii were rousing radical audiences in London. Despite Kropotkin’s initial fears that the group’s link to the terrorist People’s Will would doom efforts there, he found rapt audiences in a summer lecture tour of cities in England and Scotland. But as the chapter shows, results were meager over the next several years, until the foreign branch was dissolved amidst further émigré factional division between the populist-terrorist People’s Will and Plekhanov’s Marxist-inclined “Group for the Emancipation of Labor.” But efforts to sway Western opinion concerning the heroic martyrdom of prisoners and exiles led to unexpected results. A renewed campaign in Italy from late 1884 into 1886 spearheaded by Anna Kuliscioff and Filippo Turati yielded significant contributions which were passed along to Zasulich. Finally, the chapter notes how the seeds that had been planted, in conjunction with George Kennan’s searing expose of Siberian exile, laid the foundation for the “Society of Friends of Russian Freedom” at the end of the decade.

Recent constitutional changes had had a significant impact on the established Church’s self- identity and self-confidence. The recently appointed reforming bishops of London and Winchester, responsible for the metropolis, and leading laypeople set out to develop mission strategies to respond to this unprecedented situation in the face of London’s immense population growth and the confidence and challenge of Nonconformist churches. Anglicans adopted a strategy of subdividing densely populated historic parishes in poor districts and recruiting clergy to establish schools, gather congregations, and build churches as centres of spiritual, pastoral, and philanthropic care, with the associated need to secure voluntary funding and pastoral assistance, including women, for these initiatives. Contemporary evidence suggests that contemporary and subsequent criticisms of this strategy were overstated in claiming that the Church of England lost the allegiance of people in multiply deprived inner-urban parishes. Close examination discloses a more nuanced picture.

There were astonishing levels of philanthropy in Victorian London, most of it faith-motivated, to supplement the rate-funded Poor Law which had been reformed in 1834 under the influence of Christian theological principles. London parochial charities, the combined annual incomes of which exceeded the annual budgets of some smaller European countries administered by parish priests and officers, were reformed, and lay and clerical faith leaders established the Charity Organisation Society to research and coordinate the administration of charitable relief developing social scientific methods. To illustrate the extent of voluntary engagement with organized philanthropic activity and social action by religiously motivated groups among the multitude of religiously inspired charities in London, case studies are made of providing housing for poor people, the drink problem, and the sexual exploitation of women and girls.

Resumen
Abstract What did family life look like from the vantage point of unmarried and childless family members? The experience of eight Sharp siblings reveals previously under-examined aspects of Georgian family life. Being unmarried did not render someone family-less. Despite the geographic distance between them, the Sharps were, as brother John once remarked, “remarkable for unanimity.” Their records show a family spread over Durham, Northumberland, Northamptonshire, and London, yet bound tightly together through correspondence, shared finances, extended visits, support for religious and social benevolence, care for nephew and nieces, and summer holidays spent together. The Sharps’ lived reality was more radical than any of their political or religious positions. Their daily experience was an implicit critique of hierarchal patriarchal household structures. While there were some hierarchies, particularly the unremarked upon one between husband and wives, the most important Sharp power nexus was horizontal, not vertical. Unmarried and married, householders or not, parents or not, no sibling was cast as subordinate while others were cast as autonomous agents; no sibling held control over the purse-strings, thus constraining the others. Ultimately, the Sharps’ experiences uncover how important lateral kin like siblings and cousins were to marital and household decisions, expose single sociability not centered on courtship, highlight the importance of aunting and uncling on their own terms, demonstrate how charitable acts and philanthropic endeavors could serve as outlets or partial replacements for parenthood, and uncover genealogical practices tied to values and identity instead of to biological descendants’ possession of property.
