Resumen
This article offers a broad sketch of claims regarding the university’s public purpose in the 1960s while noting that a vision of the university as an autonomous forum for moral debate cut across the seemingly insurmountable divide between young radicals and their liberal elders. Read through the lens of educational philosophies, the era's clashes did not simply pit liberal advocates of political neutrality against radical exponents of political commitment. Rather, many radical activists—and some liberals— believed that the university should cut off many of its ties to the wider society to gain a more critical purchase on it. Indeed, critics of Clark Kerr's bureaucratic “multiversity” often hewed to a surprisingly traditional conception of higher education.

Resumen
Abstract This article focuses on an interrelation of various scales of perception in Tom McCarthy’s Satin Island (2015). Basing itself on Timothy Clark’s delineation of scalar ambiguities, it argues that Satin Island’s main protagonist, U, embodies a process of growing awareness of the world’s infinite complexity, discovering personal authenticity by withdrawing from action. His perspective is contrasted with the all-pervading Koob-Sassen, which represents a level of complicatedness that contradicts an individual perspective and the possibility of causal thinking. Finally, U’s entire narrative is cast into doubt by an oil spil, signifying a global occurrence whose rift effects are impossible to gauge, let alone predict. As these various scales are explored, the article shows that the novel thematises different levels of what Clark terms the Anthropocene disorder, in which human action can counterintuitively bring about catastrophic consequences.

Resumen
8521 Background: PI3 (phosphatidylinositol-3) kinase is central to a major intracellular signal transduction pathway that influences numerous cellular functions, including growth, differentiation and survival. Drugs that target PI3 kinase have demonstrated preclinical activity, and are undergoing further development. The PI3 kinase inhibitor, SF1126 is expected to enter clinical trials in 2007. The hallmarks for a valuable drug target include differential expression between normal and malignant cells and an association with disease progression. PI3 kinase expression has not been thoroughly evaluated in melanoma. We sought to determine the expression and prognostic value of PI3 kinase in a large cohort of primary and metastatic melanomas and to compare the expression with that of benign nevi. Methods: Tissue microarrays containing 548 melanomas and 540 benign nevi were employed to assess PI3 kinase expression. We used a novel method of in situ automated quantitative analysis (AQUA) of protein levels. We applied S100 conjugated to Cy3 to identify a melanoma tumor mask within a histospot, and measured PI3 kinase expression levels using Cy5 conjugated antibodies within the mask. Continuous AQUA scores were correlated with clinical and pathological variables. Results: PI3 kinase expression was higher in melanomas than in nevi by unpaired t-tests (p < 0.0001), and was significantly higher in metastatic than in primary specimens (p < 0.0001). High PI3 kinase scores were associated with Clark levels of IV-V (p = 0.0126), Breslow thickness > 2mm (p = 0.044) and absence of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (p = 0.014). High PI3 kinase expression strongly correlated with decreased survival by Cox univariate analysis (p = 0.0024), but was not independent of disease stage. Conclusions: PI3 kinase expression is remarkably higher in malignant melanocytes than in benign nevi. Moreover, high PI3 kinase expression is associated with disease aggression, making PI3 kinase an attractive drug target for melanoma. This is the first large study assessing PI3 kinase levels in melanoma in a quantitative fashion. Assessment of the association between PI3 kinase levels and response to therapy is warranted. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Resumen
Summary Aim: The S-100B protein is commonly used in the immunohistochemical diagnosis of malignant melanoma and its metastases and has recently been introduced as a tumor marker in peripheral blood, whereas 18F-FDG PET is currently the most sensitive in-vivo imaging method for melanoma staging. Thus, the efficency of serum S-100B and 18F-FDG PET in the detection of metastatic disease in melanoma patients are compared. Methods: Serum S-100B was measured with a commercially available immunoradiometric assay. As part of primary tumour staging whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F labeled fluorodeoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) was performed in 67 patients suffering from cutaneous melanoma with a tumour thickness > 0.75 mm and a Clark-level III-V. Final diagnosis based on histology, morphologic imaging results and/or clinical follow-up after at least six months. Results: No evidence of disease was seen in 43 of 67 patients (64.2%), 11 patients (16.4%) presented with lymph node metastases, 13 patients (19.4%) had one or more distant metastases. Alltogether, 18 of 67 patients showed S-100B values > 0.2 µg/l, including two patients without metastatic disease, 3 of 11 patients with lymph node metastases, and the 13 patients with distant metastases. One patient showed false-positive FDG-uptake in the mediastinum, but presented with S-100B values off curve. Conclusion: Our data indicate that serum S-100B determination might be helpful in identifying melanoma patients with distant metastases. In comparison to 18F-FDG PET, the value of serum S-100B for lymph-node staging is limited.

Resumen
Background:Positron emission tomography (PET/CT) has gained importance in the diagnosis and assessment of large vessel vasculitis (LVV) recently. Objectives:We aimed to investigate the diagnostic importance and clinical significance of PET/CT findings in giant cell arteritis (GCA).Methods:Data of the patients who underwent PET/CT to investigate large vessel involvement and who had at least 6 months of follow-up with a clinical diagnosis of GCA were retrospectively evaluated. PET/CT images were assessed by an experienced nuclear medicine specialist, regions of interest were drawn for major vascular territories and standardized maximum uptake values (SUVmax) of these areas were recorded.Results:Twenty-nine consecutive patients (median age 68 (50-83), mean follow-up time 37.1 ± 48.8 (6-242)) were included into the study. All patients were over 50 years old and had erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) over 50 mm/h at the time of imaging. Twenty patients (68.9%) met the ACR 1990 Classification criteria (ACR (+) group). The number of patients who had hypermetabolism in the aorta and its major branches in favour of LVV in PET/CT was 23 (79.3%) (PET-CT (+) group). Thoracic and abdominal aorta involvement were detected in 22 (75.8%) and 16 (55.2%) patients, respectively. There was positive correlation between SUVmax in thoracic and abdominal aorta on PET/CT and ESR at diagnosis (r = 0.63 p = 0.002 and r = 0.77 p <0.001, respectively) and SUVmax in thoracic aorta and CRP (r=0.50 p=0.026). PET/CT (-) patients had more frequent disease flares during the follow-up (4/6 vs. 5/23 p = 0.035 OR = 7.2 (1.01- 51)). Three distinct subgroups were defined by implementing both ACR criteria and PET/CT positivity. Among ACR (+) patients (n=20); comparison of PET/CT (+) (n=14) and PET/CT (-) (n=6) patients did not show any difference in age of diagnosis, presence of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), flare rate and damage scores. Among PET/CT (+) patients (n=23), the mean age at diagnosis was higher, PMR and bilateral axillary artery involvement was more frequent in ACR (+) group (n=14) (Table 1).Conclusion:PET/CT is increasingly used in the diagnosis and assessment of GCA in our center. The level of FDG uptake of the vessel wall in PET/CT correlates with the acute phase response. Flare was rarely observed in PET/CT (+) patients at diagnosis. Axillary artery involvement detected on PET/CT may be associated with the classical GCA clinic in ACR(+) patients (1). PET/CT (+) patients who does not met ACR criteria seems to have a diverse clinic features like young age and rare presence of PMR. PET/CT findings may be helpful in recognizing subgroups and predicting prognosis of GCA although prospective studies with follow-up scans are warranted.References:[1]Grayson PC, Maksimowicz-McKinnon K, Clark TM, Tomasson G, Cuthbertson D, Carette S, et al. Resumen
The phylogenetic relationships of 26 Australian species of Scirtes Illiger, Ora Clark and Exochomoscirtes Pic (Scirtidae) were investigated using adult morphology, particularly male and female genitalia, larval morphology and molecular data from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and the nuclear genes elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1- a) and topoisomerase I (TOP1). Four species of Scirtes and one of Ora from Europe, Southeast Asia and Japan were included. The genus Scirtes is shown to be paraphyletic with respect to the genera Ora and Exochomoscirtes. Australian Scirtes were shown to belong to four species groups: Scirtes elegans group (Yoshitomi 2009); S. helmsi group (Watts 2004); S. japonicus group (Nyholm 2002); and S. haemisphaericus group (Yoshitomi 2005). The prehensor and bursal sclerite of 15 species are illustrated as well as habitus illustrations of S. zwicki sp. nov. and S. albamaculatus Watts. Three new species from Australia are described: Scirtes lynnae, S. zwicki and S. serratus spp. nov. Scirtes nehouensis Ruta & Yoshitomi 2010 is synonymised with S. emmaae Watts 2004. Scirtes pygmaeus Watts, 2004 is synonymised with S. pinjarraensis Watts, 2006. Scirtes rutai nom. nov. is proposed as a replacement name for S. beccus Ruta, Kiałka & Yoshitomi, 2014 from Sabah as it is preoccupied by S. beccus Watts, 2004 from Australia.

Resumen
For almost 35 years the work carried out by the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark between the 1950s and until her death, in 1988, has attracted the attention of both Brazilian and European scholars and critics. Since special attention has only been given to her post-1969 work, the work carried out until 1969 has been overlooked. In particular, I would argue that through the incorporation of the human body Clark's 1959-1964 Bicho series is the first spatial performative strategy developed by Clark during the 1960s and against which all her subsequent production needs to be read.
The present essay is thus an attempt to read as spatial performative strategies Clark's Bicho series with and against the Brazilian reception of Mondrian, reception which, as I would argue has been overlooked in the context of her work. Furthermore, I would argue that in order for us to better understand how the Bicho series unfold as spatial performative strategies the Brazilian reception of Mondrian must be approached through the Brazilian reception of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology and political and cultural movements of the time. While the role played by Merleau-Ponty's incorporation of the human body in Clark's work has not been closely examined, Clark's engagement with the political and cultural movements of her time has been underestimated. I would argue that any attempt to give an account of Clark's practice needs to take into consideration the role these three aspects played in her engagement with the problem of representation.

Zondo, Raymond Mnyamezeli Mlungisi. "The replacement of the doctrine of pith and marrow by the catnic test in English Patent Law : a historical evaluation". Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5697.

Resumen
This dissertation is a historical evaluation of the movement of the English courts from the doctrine of pith and marrow to the Catnic test in the determination of non-textual infringement of patents. It considers how and why the doctrine was replaced with the Catnic test. It concludes that this movement occurred as a result of the adoption by a group of judges of literalism in the construction of patents while another group dissented and maintained the correct application of the doctrine. Although the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords initially approved the literalist approach, they, after realising its untennability, adopted the dissenters’ approach, but, ultimately, adopted the Catnic test in which features of the dissenters’ approach were included. The dissertation concludes that the doctrine of pith and marrow, correctly applied, should have been retained as the Catnic test creates uncertainty and confusion.

Resumen
George Rogers Clark, the son of middling Virginia gentry, escaped a short stint of education and fled to the eastern bank of the Ohio River at the age of nineteen. Trained as a surveyor, he made frequent trips to Fort Pitt, where he heard Croghan describe the land between the Appalachians and the Mississippi. Dunmore, Virginia’s last colonial governor and an investor in Croghan’s Illinois Land Company, began a series of skirmishes with trans-Appalachian American Indians to rid the territory of any cause that retarded settlement (and land sales). Clark, after riding with Dunmore against Cornstalk, moved to Kentucky and soon challenged the new Virginia Assembly to defend Kentucky from British and Indian raids or cede the territory to the people. He is credited with creating Kentucky County, Virginia.

Resumen
George Rogers Clark was Virginia’s western military commander from 1778 until 1783. As such, it was his responsibility to remedy the ongoing Native war waged against Kentucky’s settlers, although the actions that fed this war originated as far away as North Carolina and Fort Pitt. Boone lost two sons to the violence, a peaceful village of Christian Delawares was massacred by irate Pennsylvania militiamen, and a widelyadmired frontier colonel was literally baked by revenge-minded Delawares in a horrific chain of events recorded by William Croghan at Fort Pitt. The frontier terror led Clark to mount two campaigns into Ohio to quash the territory’s largest Indian population centers, leading Joseph Brant to write from Detroit, “I have been very uneasy since we heard the News of the Shawanese Misfortune who fell into the hands of the White Savage Virginians.”

Resumen
Jefferson gave Clark orders to mount a Detroit attack on Christmas Day, 1780. The governor’s decision was the result of three years of regular British–Native attacks on Kentucky settlements emanating from the Crown’s western fort. Recruiting in the Fort Pitt area, Clark’s ability to raise an army was hampered by the region’s divide between Pennsylvania and Virginia allegiances. With few men and supplies, Clark started down the Ohio in midsummer, warning Jefferson and Washington that his chances of success were slim. Pennsylvania militia leader, Archibald Lochry followed Clark with more men and most of the expedition’s supplies, and it was this unit that was attacked by Detroit scouts, including Mohawk chief, Joseph Brant, husband of George Croghan’s second daughter, Catherine. Lochry and thirty-six others were executed and the survivors were marched to Detroit, ending Clark’s last opportunity to take Detroit.

Before “Colonel” George Croghan became Sir William Johnson’s British deputy Indian Supervisor, he traveled as far as today’s Cleveland to trade goods with Ohio Natives. Ruined during the trade hiatus created by the French and Indian War, Croghan was with Washington at the fall of Fort Necessity and Braddock’s defeat before he and Johnson witnessed the destruction of British forces at Fort Ticonderoga. At Fort Pitt in postwar service to the Crown, Croghan welcomed his Irish nephew, William Croghan, and taught young George Rogers Clark the ways of the West.He was the father of two daughters: Susanna, whomarried a British officer, and Catherine, whose mother led the Mohawk nation’s Turtle Clan.

Resumen
Patrick Henry ordered Col. George Rogers Clark to take the Illinois country for Virginia in January 1778. Using Fort Pitt information and Spanish support secured by Henry, his Illinois Regiment surprised the largely French population at Kaskaskia, Cahokia, and Vincennes in July. After British governor, Henry Hamilton, brought a Detroit force to recapture Vincennes, Clark led his 170-man army through “a drowned country” in February 1779 to retake Vincennes and capture its commander. The British surrender of Vincennes survives among the most important events of the American Revolution, as it nullified the Crown’s plan to capture the American West before trapping Washington on the east coast. The new country’s ability to hold the territory through the Treaty of Paris negotiations also secured the Old Northwest territory for the United States.

Resumen
Captain William Croghan entered Valley Forge with ten thousand soldiers in December 1777 and left with Washington the following June as a major in Charles Scott’s brigade. He lived and worked with Lafayette, Steuben, Wayne, Hamilton, Burr, and Knox for six brutal months before emerging to encounter Clinton’s British army on a blistering day near Monmouth Court House, New Jersey. Reassigned to the Southern army in defense of Charleston, Croghan was one of approximately thirty-five hundred Americans who were forced to ground their arms to the tune of TheTurk’sMarchon 12 May 1780, the largest patriot defeat of the American Revolution. Released on parole with Colonel Jonathan Clark in the next spring, Croghan was assigned to Fort Pitt, but raced to take part in the battle of Yorktown, the last major military encounter of the Revolution.

Resumen
Cremation is not widely recognized as a form of mortuary treatment amongst the hunter-gatherer communities of Mesolithic north-west Europe (broadly defined as c.9300 cal. BC to c.4000 cal. BC). Instead, the period is perhaps most well known for some of the earliest inhumation cemeteries in northern Europe, the most familiar being the Scandinavian sites of Skateholm I and II (Scania, Sweden) (Larsson 1988a) and Vedbæk-Bøgebakken (Zealand, Denmark) (Albrethsen and Brinch Petersen 1977) and those on the coast of northern France, Teviéc and Hoëdic (Morbihan, France) (Péquart et al. 1937; Péquart and Péquart 1954). As concentrations of well-furnished burials they have long provided the focus for discussions of Mesolithic mortuary practice as well as social status and group organization (e.g. Clark and Neeley 1987) and, more recently, cosmology (e.g. Zvelebil 2003), personhood (e.g. Fowler 2004), sexuality (e.g. Schmidt 2000) and the ritual practice of handling the body (e.g. Nilsson Stutz 2003). However, discoveries within the last two decades have increased the evidence for the practice of cremation (as well as other forms of treatment, such as secondary burial) amongst the huntergatherers of the Mesolithic, both in terms of the geographic distribution of the practice and its temporal spread throughout the period. Although rare in comparison to inhumation, cremation can now be seen to have been practiced throughout both the early and late Mesolithic and, whilst evidence is currently sparse within the modern areas of Germany and the British Isles, examples are known across Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, northern France, and the Republic of Ireland (totalling at least thirteen sites with cremated remains amongst over 100 sites with human bone in this area, see Fig. 2.1 and Table 2.1). Additionally, whilst preparing this chapter, a new discovery of cremated remains deposited in a large pit was made at Langford (Essex, England) and directly dated to the late Mesolithic, representing the first example from England (Gilmour and Loe 2015). It is worth noting here that there are also several more sites with human remains (usually disarticulated or ‘loose’ human bones) which are described as ‘charred’ or ‘burnt’ but for the purposes of this chapter I consider ‘cremated remains’ to refer to bone or a body that has undergone the mortuary rite of cremation (transformation of a corpse by burning) and burnt bone as the incidental or deliberate burning of dry and/or disarticulated bone (after McKinley 2013: 150).

Resumen
A few months after Alan Turing’s tragically early death, in 1954, his colleague Geoffrey Jefferson (professor of neurosurgery at Manchester University) wrote what might serve as Turing’s epitaph: Alan in whom the lamp of genius burned so bright—too hot a flame perhaps it was for his endurance. He was so unversed in worldly ways, so childlike it sometimes seemed to me, so unconventional, so non-conform[ing] to the general pattern. His genius flared because he had never quite grown up, he was I suppose a sort of scientific Shelley. After his short but brilliant career Alan Mathison Turing’s life ended 15 days short of his fortysecond birthday.2 His ideas lived on, however, and at the turn of the millennium Time magazine listed him among the twentieth-century’s one hundred greatest minds, alongside the Wright brothers, Albert Einstein, DNA busters Crick and Watson, and Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin.3 Turing’s achievements during his short lifetime were legion. Best known as the mathematician who broke some of Nazi Germany’s most secret codes, Turing was also one of the ringleaders of the computer revolution. Today, all who click, tap, or touch to open are familiar with the impact of his ideas. We take for granted that we use the same slab of hardware to shop, manage our finances, type our memoirs, play our favourite music and videos, and send instant messages across the street or around the world. In an era when ‘computer’ was the term for a human clerk who did the sums in the back office of an insurance company or science lab, Turing envisaged a ‘universal computing machine’, able to do anything that a programmer could pin down in the form of a series of instructions. He could not have foreseen this at the time, but his universal computing machine changed the way we live: it eventually caught on like wildfire, with sales of personal computers now hovering around the million a day mark. Turing’s universal machine transported us into a world where many young people have never known life without the Internet.
