Resumen
A large family of plant carboxylesterase genes (CXEs) has been identified, which may encode enzymes involved in secondary metabolism (among other potential functions) in higher plants. CXE family members were identified from the model plants Arabidopsis thaliana (20) and Oryza sativa (48), from the commercial fruit crops Actinidia spp. (12), Malus pumila (12), and Vaccinium corymbosum (1), plus several CXEs previously identified from a variety of other plant species. Plant CXEs share conserved sequence motifs and secondary structure characteristics with members of the α/β hydrolase fold superf

Magnesium (Mg2+) is an essential mineral nutrient for plants and is the most abundant free divalent cation in plant cells. However, our knowledge of the role of this ion in the plant cell is limited, and the mechanisms of homeostasis and transport of the ion are almost completely unknown. A. Tutone (this laboratory) identified an Arabidopsis thaliana gene by the complementation of a Mg2+-uptake yeast mutant (CM66). This gene, referred to as AtMRS2-11, was expressed as cDNA from a strong yeast promoter and allowed the growth of the CM66 yeast strain on standard media. The conceptually translate

The macronutrient phosphorus is vital to plant growth but the readily absorbed form of inorganic phosphate (Pi) is often environmentally limited. To increase Pi acquisition and use efficiency, plants have developed strategies involving a group of proteins, characterized by a highly conserved N-terminal SPX domain, which play critical roles. In this project, 14 SPX domain-containing proteins were identified in potato (Solanum tuberosum) and classified into four plant SPX domain-containing protein families. One of the major challenges for maize improvement is to enhance the protein quality of the endosperm. We do not know what genes encode the proteins that contribute most to the protein quality, but lysine is the most limiting amino acid. One way to determine the proteins made in the endosperm is by isolating the genes expressed in this tissue and identifying their function. The results of the maize genome project with etiolated seedling and endosperm cDNA libraries support the basis of this strategy, in that the putative functions of a large number of cDNA sequences were identified through sequ

Eukaryotic organisms require the ability to respond to their environments. They do so by utilizing signal transduction pathways that allow for signals to effect final biological responses. Many times, these final responses require new gene expression events that have been stimulated or repressed within the nucleus. Thus, much of the understanding of signal transduction pathways converges on the understanding of how signaling affects gene expression alterations (Kumar et al., 2004). Our current understanding of phylogenetic relationships in the family comes from several plastid genes and nuclear ITS data. However, the published nuclear ITS tree was unrooted (outgroups were too distant to align), and there were several minor phylogenetic conflicts between plastid and ITS gene trees for three closely related species, Trithuria bibracteata, T. occidentalis

Resumen
Receptor-like kinases (RLKs) are encoded for by one of the largest gene families in Arabidopsis and represent the predominant form of cell surface receptors in plants. RLKs mediate signal transduction in diverse processes including steroid-mediated growth pathways, pathogen-triggered innate immune responses. Here I present characterization of mutant phenotypes, expression patterns, and genetic interactions for the BAK1 INTERACTING RECEPTOR (BIR) family of Leucine-rich Repeat-RLKs, three members of which have had no previous characterization. Furthermore, I show that cell death, aerial grow
