Some comments on the polemics of Plutarch with Stoics The purpose of this article is to briefly discuss several key anti-stoic arguments presented in Plutarch’s polemical texts — De stoicorum repugnantiis and De communibus notitiis adversus stoicos. The paper argues that the polemic against Stoicism is rather ill-disposed and that the presented arguments, despite their rhetorical power and elegancy in language, show an insufficient understanding of the criticised doctrine.

Abstract Polemic has a deeply polemical history. It has, on occasion, been dismissed as a philosophical dead-end, but its sociological salience has more often been missed. In this article, I take up the one-sided religious polemics undertaken in the fourteenth century by the Mādhva Vedāntins against the Advaita Vedāntins. I argue that religious polemics, besides being integral to the consolidation of group identity and fostering solidarity, shed light on the issues that are of acute import to the group advancing them. In these engagements, silence can convey as much as sustained engagement, revealing the asymmetries of power that obtain between presumed rival institutions.

Polemic against polemics. Plutarch’s attacks on Epicureanism Plutarch’s attitude toward Epicurean philosophy is extremely hostile. According to him, at the core of Epicureanism is subversiveness, an attempt to attack the most fundamental components of Greek culture: traditional morality, religious beliefs, educational, and political commitment. Moreover, the Epicureans were the only philosophers in antiquity who openly criticised Socrates, first and foremost for his εἰρωνεία and “unreasonable” death. In the article, the main tenets of Epicureanism, as well as Plutarch’s polemical efforts, are centered around the figure of τετραφάρμα-κος, or the “fourfold remedy”.

This article argues that on-line polemical discourse between Muslims and Christians deserves not to be dismissed but rather careful examination and analysis. To this end, it engages in the process of describing, categorizing and characterizing online polemical sources dealing with the Quran and the Bible in relation to each other. After a brief consideration of the nature of polemic, and of the themes of past Muslim-Christian polemic, three particular cases are examined in some detail: the suffering servant passage in Isaiah 53, the quranic story of the angels prostrating to Adam, and the meanings of surah 112. In conclusion, some effects of the existence and use of on-line polemic on teaching and scholarship on the Bible and the Quran are considered.

ABSTRACT: Although neither Herodotus nor Thucydides is known for ad hominem attacks, it should not be concluded that they avoid polemic or aim for uncontroversial expression or somehow precede an age of polemic. They certainly reflect polemical debates on a variety of issues and hold sharp views of their own on numerous matters, including the particular topic of how to write history (Thucydides often seems to tilt at Herodotus). Polemic, then, is a fundamental and complex feature of their work, with a range of literary, political, and historiographical factors underpinning its operation.

The article presents polemics, concerning the concept of philosophy of the Lviv-Warsaw School (R. Ingarden’s polemic with K. Twardowski’s views on the possibility of forms and limits of cognition of mental states of other people), and three polemics with Łukasiewicz’s concept of trivalent logic: F. Gonseth; Urquhart; T. Bigaj. A polemical analysis of the differences in the understanding of the tasks of philosophy between the Lviv-Warsaw School and Polish neo-Thomism is also presented. The postulate of the neutrality of philosophy in relation to worldview problems leads to non-involvement in religious and political disputes, while the recommendation to avoid speculative issues – to an aversion to statements of a metaphysical nature. M. Przełęcki, considered to be one of the last representatives of the Lviv-Warsaw School, argues against this view.

The subject of the paper is the analysis of specific genre features and (con)textual circumstances of the literary polemics between Ujević - Drainac - Ujević, conducted in the interwar period, mainly in the daily newspaper Pravda. Taking into account all the complexity of the case of this polemic (seriality, multiple intentionality; explicit and implicit poetics of serial polemics; the status of actors and audience; the circumstances of the daily newspaper and the Belgrade poetic bohemian circle, as well as Drainac’s overall poetics), we come to the conclusion of the multiple conditioned functionality of literary polemics, to which the specifics of the actor, topic and style contribute proportionately, but also the publication itself, whose choice, in the case of the serial polemic of the “ready” Drainac and the no less ready Ujević, is indicated by practical reasons and the desire for publicity.

Introduction. The paper focuses on the concept of polemic discourse as public verbalcollision in the process of which the author breaks the principles of ethical communication inorder to realize certain tasks. In verbal practice metaphor of polemics reveals its power basedon the physical collision sensory-motor experience. Purpose. The paper aims to highlight theconceptual understanding of public verbal collision that is grounded on the image schema ofBLOCKING, which means making the opponent face some obstacle, and COUNTERATTACK,that illustrates the way of collision of two equally powerful opponents whose character ofattacks is different. Methods. The methodology of the given research is based on comparative,conceptual and linguocognitive methods of characterization the mechanisms of conducting thedebate to achieve certain results in polemic discourse verbalized in English and Ukrainian.Results. Studying the mechanism of polemic discourse, the paper emphasizes that BLOCKINGpredetermines the strategy reasoning to make the opponent look like some obstacle forthe author. COUNTERATTACK reflects the interactive character of verbal collision betweenthe participants of the debate, and author and opponent change their parts from time to time.It is proved that sensory-motor factors influence the verbalization of the collision polemicpower which is realized in such notions as conflict, fight, war and aggression. During theirdebate the opponents use so called verbal collision weapons which hit but don’t kill physically.Conclusion. The paper identifies the participants of polemic discourse: sender and two addresses(opponent and listeners). The sender, who is the author of polemic discourse, stands for differentsocial institutions’ points of view. His main tasks are the following: to lower the social statusof the opponent and to get as many as possible supporters among the listeners. Like the authorthe opponent is explicated in the polemics as the person who states the opinion of differentinstitutions. Listeners become arbitrators who take the decision about the winner of the debate.

The purpose of this research is to illustrate that Orientalist studies and interpretations of the Prophet's Hadith or Sunnah are positive and negative. While the study and interpretation of the negative Orientalists brought polemics both among the Orientalists themselves and among Muslim intellectuals. The Orientalist who brought this polemic, is due to untruthfulness, dishonesty and objectivity so that the Orientalist gets sharp criticism from Muslim intellectuals, both inclusive, exclusive and modernist. All of that, aimed at Orientalists studying and interpreting the Hadith of the Prophet and the Sunnah with a scientific and systematic purpose, not for their personal, group and religious interests.

Within the polemic work which was developed by Eastern Christians it is necessary to underline the transmission of the whole of the religious conceptions, the kinds of argumentation and defence of the dogma, the elaboration of the discourse, the debate techniques used, the vocabulary which was adapted and generated, the rewriting developed from the Biblical material and Quranic criticism, as well as the refutations of the Muslim ideas, and the huge information which is inside the intrachristian polemics. Theology is the most important element to describe the abridged knowledge which is in all of the treatises which make whole the polemic typology. This element allows us to rebuild the rich and involved tram which forms the 'theological knowledge' of the different Ch1istian churches and the several Muslim trends too. This, polemics help to clarify the processes which shape the ideology of the different human groups in conflict.

Abstract: This study aims to find answers to the controversy about halal and haram eating blood based on investigations in the trial in Jerusalem. The polemic of eating blood has become a theological controversy among Christians from time to time. Controversy due to differences of opinion because it has a background of diverse theological assumptions. This polemic can actually be resolved if the relational perception is a win-win solution. Is in today's life the prohibition on eating blood in the Old Testament still applies and is it still a disaster for mankind? This study uses a qualitative method with library research and analysis using the principles of hermeneutic interpretation. This study concludes that the doctrinal culmination point related to the blood-eating polemic is one of the factors that breaks relations between Christian groups so that it becomes an interesting "hot" issue.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jawaban kontroversi tentang halal dan haram makan darah berdasarkan penelusuran dalam sidang di Yerusalem. Polemik makan darah telah menjadi kotroversi teologis dikalangan Kristen dari masa ke masa. Kontroversi akibat perbedaan pendapat karena memiliki latar belakang asumsi teologis yang beragam. Polemik ini sejatinya dapat diselesaikan jika persepsi relasional yang bersifat win-win solution. Apakah dalam kehidupan sekarang larangan memakan darah dalam Perjanjian Lama masih berlaku dan masih masih merupakan suatu kebinasaan bagi umat manusia? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan riset pustaka dan analisa menggunakan prinsip-prinsip penafsiran hermeneutik. Penelitian ini menyimpulan titik kulminasi doktrinal terkait polemik makan darah menjadi salah satu pemecah hubungan antar golongan orang Kristen sehingga menjadi isu yang menarik.

This article analyses the polemic relationship between the formation of Indie Weerbaar and the radicalization of the Sarekat Islam. The organization later protected the Dutch East Indies from the effects of the First World War. The support from Sarekat Islam initiated polemics with left groups within the Sarekat Islam. This article was written using the historical method. It emphasizes on the using of primary sources in the form of writing records from some prominent figures of Sarekat Islam. The results show that the Sarekat Islamdecentralization policy implemented by the Governor-General of Idenburg resulted in the organization's leadership losing control of its agencies. Abdoel Moeis' involvement in the Indie Weerbaar committee triggered a polemic against leftist figures in Sarekat Islam, especially Semaoen. Semaoen managed to take advantage of the formation polemic of Indie Weerbaar to increase his influence and popularity. Semaoen even succeeded in influencing the Sarekat Islam congress participants to support more radical organizational policies such as the labor movements. In other hand, Semaoen also succeeded in influencing other Sarekat Islam leaders, including Tjokroaminoto, to become more radical through the organization of Radicale Concentratie in Volksraad. Thus, it can be seen that the polemic on the formation of Indie Weerbaar led to the radicalization of the Sarekat Islam movement.

Abstract Bakhtin famously argued that language-as-used is essentially dialogic. One pragmatic implication concerns how dialogicity is established in various contexts. In political discourse, polemic polyphony emerges from the juxtaposition of adversarial voices of political actors: a dialogue in which different voices index different ideological orientations. Polyphonic ensembles establish discoursal scenes and make them recognizable, enabling distinctions such as those between ‘us’ and ‘them’, and between heroes and villains. Overall, they assist speakers in the semiotic mediation of political relations. The corpus includes eighteen speeches delivered during a dissent event that takes place after the Sheikh Jarrah weekly anti-occupation demonstration in East Jerusalem. The speeches are given in Hebrew by a Palestinian neighborhood resident and activist, to a small audience of regular Jewish-Israeli protestors. Through studying noninstitutionalized political discourse, dialogicity and polemic polyphony are illuminated in an on-the-ground, context-rich, and marginalized setting.

This essay examines the place of emotions and emotional discourse—love, friendship, human kindness, etc.—in selected polemical and literary texts from late medieval Iberia. It suggests that a view of the non-polemical or extra-polemical elements of the texts—especially expressions of emotion, exclamations, interjections, and other examples of passion—provide a novel approach to such material apart from traditional studies of polemical content. A reading that takes into account the multiple themes and traditions beyond polemics that are contained within such texts shows that apparently individual, anecdotic texts are highly dependent on the literary expectations of a public informed by certain cultural conventions. This suggests that polemics and polemical material can be read for much more than their formulaic polemical content, and that literary texts can be read in some cases according to polemical codes.

This article focuses on the polemic related to the emergence of Dongson culture in Southeast Asia. Polemics related to this culture appear due to the existence of various views given by scholars based on the research done by them. The main objective of this paper is to discuss the polemics that arise related to Dongson culture in Southeast Asia. In addition, the objective of this paper also identifies issues or aspects that are often debated among scholars. In addition, this paper also analyzes some scholars' views especially in the field of archeology related to the polemic of Dongson culture in Southeast Asia. This study uses bibliographic methods by referring to a number of books, articles and seminar papers written by scholars who have studied Dongson culture. The results of the study found that polemics appear due to continuous research conducted by scholars, and each finding is supported by new and relevant evidence. In addition, the coverage of the area associated with the spread of Dongson culture covers a wide area in Southeast Asia including the country of China. In conclusion, polemics related to Dongson culture appear as long as there is research done by scholars because one of the foundations of this culture is the discovery of bronze drums that are widespread in Southeast Asia and China.

AbstractThe Gospel of Judas is a Sethian gnostic revelation dialogue which contains an unusual amount of narrative movement and casts Judas as recipient of the revelation. It is in large part polemic and is comparable to other early polemics, both of the gnostics and of their opponents. It inveighs against the eucharist and the clergy who celebrate it, attempts to substitute, for the supposedly inaccurate passion narrative of the four gospels, an account of the events as they really transpired, and sharply contrasts the character and fate of gnostic with those of catholic Christians. We treat first of its attack on the eucharist, next of its handling of the gospel narratives, and then of its polemic stance, comparing this with that of three other gnostic polemics, The Testimony of the Truth, The Apocalypse of Peter, and The Second Treatise of the Great Seth. In the light of this comparison we conclude with suggestions concerning the sort of situation our document might reflect, and the reasons for the selection of Judas as its protagonist.

Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā bin Sharaf al-Nawawī (d. 676 H) is a figure known for his expertise in fiqh and hadith. Among his masterpieces that are the focus of scholars and researchers is Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, which is also considered the best Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Apart from the two fields of knowledge, one of the fields that he has mastered but that has not yet been widely highlighted is the field of islamic creed. Therefore, there is a need for a study of the character of this great scholar in the field of islamic creed. Among the issues and polemics of theology that are given attention by the theologians is the polemic of the ru’yah Allah and al-Nawawī also provides views on this polemic. Therefore, this study was written to analyze the stance of al-Nawawī and his position in the polemic of Allah's ru'yah in order to identify the stance of this hadith figure. This study uses the method of content analysis based on Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim as well as the works of scholars in the science of islamic creed to obtain relevant information. The study found that al-Nawawī's stance in this polemic is in line with the core essence and methodology of the creed brought by Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā'ah among al-Ashā'irah scholars who argue with evidence of revelation (naqlī) and logic (' aqlī). This at once proves that al-Ashā'irah scholars are also represented by the foremost hadith scholars and not just theologians.

Although religious polemic is typically understood and studied as a phenomenon of mutual antagonism across the confessions—Protestant against Catholic and Catholic against Protestant—the growth of the early modern polemic traditions was the product of heated internal controversy. In a series of theses intended to point to rhetorical aspects of conflicts within the Lutheran and Catholic confessions, this paper brings forward features of polemical writings from the disputes between Gnesio-Lutherans and Philippists in the wake of the Augsburg Interim of 1548 and those between and among Jesuits and Jansenists in the seventeenth century. Early modern religious thought, I suggest, cannot be understood without attention to the fissures within the Lutheran and Roman Catholic traditions.

Abstract This paper studies the links between exegesis and polemic in Origen, focussing on the exegetical and polemical use of ἀκολουθία in two contemporary works: Commentary on Matthew and Against Celsus. After a short survey of the different meanings of the word ἀκολουθία, we will see how the pagan polemicist uses this notion. Then we will study Origen’s answer in a more thorough fashion. We will show that, as in the Commentary on Matthew, Origen uses the notion of ἀκολουθία to re-establish the dignity of the Gospels; but he also criticizes the inability of Celsus to correctly understand a text – in other words, his “lack of ἀκολουθία”. In the end, it will be clear that in Origen, the notion of ἀκολουθία is crucial both in exegesis and in polemics, and that it helps us to better understand the unity of his thought and of his works.

The implementation of the 2019 Election and the stages of its implementation cannot be separated from various issues or polemics. Many polemics occur starting from the regulatory side, general implementation, up to technical matters. The birth of new regulations related to the Election was colored by a polemic of the presidential threshold. Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections as a single regulation at the law level in organizing Elections cannot be separated from controversy. Many people respond to the pros and cons. The pros and cons response is focused on several things, one of which is the presidential threshold. The polemic or pros and cons associated with the presidential threshold in the community actually contain big question marks. First, the big question is whether the presidential threshold contained in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections is in accordance with the constitution? considering the law is a translation of the constitution. Second, is the presidential threshold set forth in Law Number 7 of 2019 in accordance with the wishes of the community or not detrimental to the community? considering the law is aimed at regulating the aspirations of the community.

ABSTRACT: Polybius (c. 200–118 bc) is a notoriously combative historian, gleefully attacking his fellow historians for their moral failings and intellectual crimes, and their works for their misleading errors and grave distortions. But Polybius sometimes appears guilty himself of some of the same faults he finds in others. This paper aims to assess Polybius’ quality and reliability as a writer of history on his own terms, that is, according to the strict standards he sets for other historians, with the ultimate aim of determining whether his Histories marks a return to the high historiographical standards set by Polybius’ famous predecessor Thucydides, or perpetrates the same historiographical high crimes and misdemeanours he accuses his contemporary historical writers of committing.

ABSTRACT: In contrast with his predecessors in ancient historiography such as Polybius or Livy, Tacitus avoids attacks on named predecessors. He does claim superiority for his own writings in his prefaces, but on the grounds that he was free from the influences that distorted earlier efforts, such as concern about political disfavour or apparent flattery in a contemporary context. The desire for vengeful self-justification after an emperor, now seen as a tyrant, had died also called into question authors’ impartiality. While the critique of imperial activities has often been taken as the basis of Tacitus’ writing, this paper argues that the most important feature of his histories is the emphasis on the behaviour of the ruling class, the historian’s senatorial peers. The social etiquette of this group is a strong influence on the nature of Tacitus’ criticism and reflects the continuing difficulties in writing about the past even under ‘good’ emperors.

ABSTRACT: Livy is not generally described as a polemicist, and the annalistic tradition tends to be described in terms of continuity rather than innovation. This paper aims to show, however, that there is significant polemic in Livy, including ad hominem polemic. Even if the latter falls short of Hellenistic levels, it is worth making the point that Livy wrote a highly competitive narrative, so that the degree to which he deliberately took on and surpassed rival authorities has probably been underestimated. Despite his obvious respect for some basic traditions and interpretations, he was indeed trying to surge past his rivals in innovative ways that would leave him as the pre-eminent authority. Polemic was one of the competitive strategies employed for this purpose.

The idea of finding the source of V.V. Rozanov’s genius never left K.I. Chukovsky. The article traces the public polemical speeches of the writers from the period of K.I. Chukovsky’s residence in St. Petersburg to the end of the most vivid polemic in 1910—1911. There are examined the hidden details of the polemic of 1908—1909. It was devoted to mass detective literature. The article reveals fundamental differences between the writers. For the first time, there are presented handwritten additions to the well-known polemical article by K.I. Chukovsky “An Open Letter to V.V. Rozanov”. The author reveals the primacy of K.I. Chukovsky’s critical speech among the participants of the polemic with V.V. Rozanov of 1910—1911. The draft versions of V.V. Rozanov’s objections have never been published before as well. A comparison of the contents of K.I. Chukovsky’s letters and critical articles against V.V. Rozanov leads to the conclusion about the complexity of the writers’ relations to each other. They both highly evaluated the literary talent in their political opponent. At the same time, both V.V. Rozanov and K.I. Chukovsky followed the political direction of periodicals. Loyalty to the political programs of literary press bodies was mandatory. The article draws attention to the similarity of the ideas about the eclectic formation of cultural processes in society. V.V. Rozanov and K.I. Chukovsky were guided by the idea that political processes were secondary compared to the moral organization of a person. In the reissue of the “Open Letter”, the critic removed the texts condemning V.V. Rozanov for his opposition to the revolutionary movement.

Eduard Hanslick's The Beautiful in Music (1854) is a classic of musical aesthetics. Its influence has been profound, not least as a polemic against Wagner's Opera and Drama (1851). The polemic was defended by the author in his preface to the seventh edition of 1885, which contains the oft-quoted evaluation of music drama as ‘formlessness exalted into a principle’. The Hanslick/Wagner debate defines an aesthetic and theoretical ground zero around which significant forces have been arrayed. The results have been complex and mixed. While Wagner's music prevailed and his theories were generally dismissed, Hanslick's rejection of music as a medium for expressing feelings articulated an approach brought to fruition by Heinrich Schenker (who unsurprisingly shared Hanslick's negative view of Wagner as well as his polemical tendencies).

Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan dengan memanfaatkan metode analisis isi. Kajian ini dimulai dari pengungkapan biografi kedua ulama dan polemik kedua ulama dalam bidang fikih, khususnya tentang salat Jumat. Perdebatan ini memang menyita perhatian Sayyid Usman yang menulis sepuluh karya tentang objek yang diperdebatkan. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa tradisi kritik tidak saja berlaku pada ulama di era klasik, tetapi juga ulama Nusantara di era Kolonial. Perdebatan di antara dua ulama dalam satu persoalan terjadi pada satu masa tetapi berbeda tempat. Studi ini berkontribusi bagi pengkajian hukum Islam di era kolonial Belanda, sekaligus telah membuktikan bahwa ulama-ulama Nusantara berkontribusi dalam pengkajian hukum Islam di Nusantara.</p><p><br /><strong>Abstract</strong>: <strong>Polemic of Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about Friday Prayer</strong>. This study discusses the polemic between Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about carrying out Friday prayers in two mosques in Palembang. This article is the result of library research using the content analysis method. This study begins with the disclosure of the biographies of the two ulemas and polemics of the two scholars in the field of jurisprudence, especially regarding Friday prayers. This debate indeed caught the attention of Sayyid Usman, who wrote ten works on the debated objects. This study shows that the tradition of criticism not only applies to the ulama in the classical era, but also the scholars of the Archipelago in the Colonial era. The debate between the two scholars in one problem occurred at one time but at a different place. This study contributes to the study of Islamic law in the Dutch colonial era, while also proving that the archipelago’s scholars contributed to the study of Islamic law in the archipelago region.</p><p><strong>Kata Kunci:</strong> fikih, ulama, naskah, Haramain, Nusantara</p>

Tullius Cicero (about whom everyone else had a strong opinion), this paper exposes Appian’s unwillingness to engage in polemic even while he consistently displays his preference for monarchic government and his belief that the ‘happy’ outcome for Rome was the result of divine guidance and intervention.

AbstractThis article investigates one polemical issue, the substitution of Mecca for Jerusalem, in the writings of Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. Qutayba (828–889 ce). In his Book of the Signs of Prophethood (Kitāb Aʿlām al-Nubuwwa), Ibn Qutayba interprets five Biblical verses that speak of Jerusalem as actually alluding to Mecca. The investigation queries the quality of several Biblical allusions in Ibn Qutayba's work, probes Ibn Qutayba's reasoning in using them, and asks how they fit into the larger and longer-lasting polemic between Islam and Judaism concerning the identity of the son whom Abraham bound on the altar. It is found that the two issues—the place most sacred to God and the identity of the bound son—are strongly connected in the polemic between Islam and Judaism and between different schools of Islamic exegesis.

The issue of gender equality is an important study in international relations. In Indonesia itself, the issue of gender equality is still rife. Rancangan Undang-Undang Kesetaraan dan Keadilan Gender (RUU KKG) is an initial draft of the government's efforts to enforce gender equality and justice in Indonesia, and this draft law still requires input from the public. RUU KKG has received various responses from the public, ranging from supportive responses to responses against the bill. RUU KKG has urgency considering that in Indonesia there are still frequent acts of gender discrimination, especially against women. This study aims to provide information about the polemics that occur in the Draft Law on Gender Equality and Justice in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative method in the form of descriptive analysis techniques. The analysis of this research uses a conceptual approach. The result of this research is that information was found regarding the presence of the RUU KKG in Indonesia which later reaped many pros and cons and became a polemic. The polemic of RUU KKG was then based on those who said they were pro on the grounds of the positive influence brought by the RUU KKG and those who were against it, especially the Muslim group, on the grounds that there were articles in RUU KKG that contradicted religion. This polemic of the RUU KKG certainly requires an integrative negotiation effort to find a resolution that can be agreed upon by various parties.
