AbstractThe focus of research in depression is on negative affect. However, positive affect is under-investigated and plays an important role in resilience against depression by neutralizing the effects of genetic vulnerability to depression.

Resumen
We examine independence in retrospective evaluations of positive and negative affect (PA and NA, respectively). Study 1 shows that the estimation of weekly PA and NA frequencies depends on the congruent daily affects but not on the incongruent daily affects (i.e., weekly PA [NA] depends on the daily PAs [NAs], but not on the daily NAs [PAs]). Study 2 replicates and extends the results of Study 1 by using a within- and between-subjects design as well as both frequency and intensity measures of affect, and by also examining the relationship between momentary and daily affect. Study 3 shows that daily PA and NA are affected by the existence of subjectively defined congruent peak affect and less by subjectively defined incongruent peak affect. We suggest a focusing bias account, according to which asking about positive [negative] affect focuses attention on positive [negative] experiences.

Resumen
Pregnancy is one of the important events in a woman’s life. Having a positive and planned pregnancy will impact the psychological well-being of both mother and baby. This study describes the relationship between the affect and demographics of pregnant adolescents. Respondents consisted of 92 pregnant adolescents (19.6% trimester 1, 41.3% trimester 2 and 39.1% trimester 3), with an age range of 16 to 35 years (M = 18.99, SD = 2.899). Pregnant adolescents were asked to fill in the positive and negative influence scale (PANAS). The correlation coefficient of Cronbach’s alpha for the positive influence scale is 0.845. The correlation coefficient of Cronbach’s alpha for the negative influence scale is 0.676. Researchers used Chi-Square to determine the relationship between positive and negative influences with the demographic characteristics of adolescent mothers. The results of the description of the Positive affect were related to age (Asymp. Sig. = 0.000) and gestational age (Asymp. Sig. = 0.009). In contrast, the Negative affect was related to adolescent education (Asymp. Sig. = 0.013). These results underlie the process of adaptation of adolescent mothers in undergoing a healthy and planned pregnancy.

Resumen
Abstract. Based on the framework of Personality Systems Interactions theory, this article addresses the functional mechanisms by which positive affect influences motivational and self-regulatory determinants of health-relevant behavior on an elementary level of processing. Research encompassing experimental procedures such as the Stroop task will be presented which suggest that positive affect is necessary not only to facilitate self-regulation of negative emotions but also to facilitate self-motivation, i.e., the enactment of difficult intentions that entail the risk of procrastination. We also highlight the role of state and trait accessibility of self-referential information (”self-access”) in generating such positive affect. The relevance of the findings for health maintenance is addressed.

Texto completo
Resumen
Abstract Positive affect is important for physical health, well-being, and relationships. Yet, most studies of dementia care dyads have focused on negative outcomes, such as depression and caregiver burden. We present findings from studies that address this important research gap. The first two speakers present findings from actor partner interdependence models using secondary data from a randomized controlled trial of persons with early-stage dementia (PWD) and their spouses. Specifically, Dr. Monin will show that actor quality of life is significantly related to positive affect cross-sectionally, controlling for functional status of each partner and PWD behavioral symptoms. Ms. Piechota will present longitudinal findings demonstrating that when spouses were high in difficulty regulating emotions, the PWD’s positive affect decreased over three months, controlling for intervention arm and covariates. The second two speakers will present findings from two different studies of persons living with behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and controls that engaged in laboratory conflict discussions. Dr. Brown will show that caregivers of individuals with bvFTD reported greater decreases in positive emotion across the discussion relative to caregivers of individuals with AD and language variants. She will also discuss how caregivers who reported greater decreases in positive emotion had higher levels of depressive symptoms, controlling for their partner’s diagnosis and level of cognitive impairment. Finally, Dr. Chen will provide evidence that bvFTD caregivers had lower emotional well-being according to the SF-36 than AD caregivers and controls, and this effect was fully mediated by bvFTD caregivers' lower positive emotional connections.
