Šiame straipsnyje pateikiami vokiečių kalbos praeities laikų diachroninės analizės rezultatai. Straipsnio įvadinėje dalyje apžvelgiami moksliniai darbai, kuriuose nagrinėjama vokiečių kalbos veiksmažodžio praeities laikų semantikos įvairovės problematika. Analizuojant praeities laikų semantikos ypatumus remtasi Reichenbacho formule. Taip pat šiame straipsnyje šiuolaikinės kalbos praeities laikų (Präteri­tum, Perfekt ir Plusquamperfekt) semantikos įvairovė gretinama su viduriniosios vokiečių aukštaičių kalbos (Mittelhochdeutsch) praeities laikų semantika. Tyrimo tikslas – diachroninės analizės būdu nus­tatyti praeities laikų vartojimo kitimus. Tyrimo metu buvo nustatyta, kad XIII a. pradžioje visi praeities laikai buvo vartojami rašytiniuose šaltiniuose. Präteritum bei Perfekt laikų semantika susiaurėjo, o Plusquamperfekt vartojimas pasikeitė kiekybiškai.

Partindo de uma afirmação geral, segundo a qual não existe correspondência entre o «Präteritum» e o Pretérito Imperfeito do Indicativo e nem entre o «Perfekt» e o Pretérito Perfeito do Indicativo, analiso, neste trabalho, o significado e emprego destes dois tempos verbais do Alemão, apontando alguns traços semânticos que possibilitam uma aproximação entre estes dois tempos verbais do Alemão e os Pretéritos Imperfeito e Perfeito do Indicativo do Português (parte I). Através das regras estabelecidas para tal aproximação, passo a um estudo de sua aplicabilidade em sala de aula, analisando a apresentação do «Präteritum» e do «Perfekt» em dois livros didáticos de Alemão para estrangeiros (parte II a). Encerrando o trabalho, apresento um estudo da transposição do Pretérito Perfeito do Indicativo do Português para o Alemão, usando a tradução alemã de Curt Meyer-Clason do poema «Confidência do Itabirano» de Carlos Drummond de Andrade, evidenciando a relevância dos estudos teóricos, empreendidos na parte I, na área da tradução (parte II b). Von einer didaktischen Schwterigkeit ausgehend, nach der es keine Entsprechung zwischen Präteritum und «Pretérito Imperfeito do Indicativo» und zwischen Perfekt und «Pretérito Perfeito do Indicativo» gibt, untersuche ich im theoretischen Teil dieser Arbeit die Bedeutung und den Gebrauch von Präteritum und Perfekt im Deutschen, mit dem Ziel, dle zwei Vergangenheitstempora des Deutschen den erwähnten Vergangenheitstempora des Portugiesischen anzunähern (Teil I). Anhand der festgelegten Regem, analysiere ich die Einführung von Präteritum und Perfekt in zwei Lehrbuchern, wobei die Anwendung dieser Regeln geprüft wird (Teil n a). Zum Abschluss wird die Übersetzung eines Gedichts vom Portugiesischen ins Deutsche analysiert («Vertraulichkeiten eines Itabiraners» von Carlos Drummond de Andrade; Übersetzung von Curt Meyer-Clason), wobei auf die Relevanz der theoretischen Untersuchungen im Teil I auch im Bereich der Übersetzung hingewiesen wird. Starting with the general statement that there is no correspondence between the «Präteritum» and the «Pretérito imperfeito do indicativo» nor between the «Perfekt» and the «Pretérito perfeito do indicativo», I analyse, in this paper, the meaning and the usage of these two verbal tenses of German, pointing out some semantic characteristics which make it possible to approximate these two German verbal tenses to the Portuguese «Pretérito imperfeito» and «Perfeito do indicativo" (part I). With the rules established for such an approximation in mind, I move to a study of their applicability in the class-room, analysing the presentation of «Präteritum» and «Perfekt» in two textbooks of German as a foreign language (part Ha). As a conclusion to this paper, I present an analysis of the transposition of «Pretérito perfeito do indicativo» from Portuguese to German, using Curt Meyer-Clason's translation of Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s poem «Confidência do Itabirano» to demonstrate the importance of the theoretical studies referred to in part I to translation work (part II b).

Dans les subordonnées finales introduites par damit, on constate que le Präteritum allemand peut entrer en concurrence avec les formes subjonctives avec lesquelles il est alors commutable sans changement appréciable de sens : mais que dans ce cas, l’alternance du Präteritum avec le Perfekt — autrement très fréquente — est interdite. Qu’il y ait des traits communs entre le Konjunktiv II et le Präteritum est un fait que signale la synapse totale de ces deux formes de la conjugaison régulière : et la synapse partielle des formes irrégulières (voir exemple (a)). Nous allons essayer de dégager les divers effets de sens qui découlent de l’emploi de l’une ou de l’autre forme dans la subordonnée finale introduite par damit, pour enfin réexaminer le signifié de puissance du Präteritum allemand, et proposer un lien avec le Konjunktiv II.

The article investigates the specificity of the German conjunctive within the construction of structural und semantic models. It is proved that the form of Konj. Präteritum is the means in to individualize the simple sentence in the aspect of its structural and semantic organization

Abstract Jetzt ›now‹ and bald ›soon‹ are frequently used in German to express temporal references with present and future readings, respectively. However, it is not unusual to find them combined with the Perfekt and Präteritum, which are commonly described in the literature as past tenses. Although such use of temporal deixis in Modern German is well studied, there is still little research on this topic from a historical perspective. In this paper, I attempt to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the use of the adverb nu ›now‹, ›then‹ in Old Saxon and Old High German. Textual analyses of these works reveal that the ›Hêliand‹ and the ›Evangelienbuch‹ exhibit a use of the adverb nu similar to the use of jetzt and bald in Modern German, since it was found in combination not only with the Präsens, but also with the Präteritum, and with what can be recognized as the prototype of the modern Perfekt. The analyses also show that, although nu was often used as a pragmatic marker to highlight particular passages or convey the author’s attitude in relation to a specific event, it also retained its temporal meaning, especially when combined with the past tenses, establishing the chronological sequence of the narration.

Abstract The emergence of the German double present and past perfect (hat vergessen gehabt ‘has forgotten had’; ist gefahren gewesen ‘is gone been’ – hatte vergessen gehabt ‘had forgotten had’; war gefahren gewesen ‘was gone been’) is still widely debated. Some scholars consider the development of these constructions a result of the decline of the Präteritum, whereas others claim that these were formed as a consequence of the loss of the aspectual system and the reconstruction process of the verbal categories. In this article, the author argues that the development of these constructions is the result of the grammaticalization of the Perfekt as a ‘commentary tense’ in the 14th Century. The increased frequency of the present perfect prompted the reanalysis of the past participles of haben (gehabt) and sein (gewesen), which began to appear alongside the present perfect, creating new periphrastic constructions, including the double present and past perfects.

Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist die mundartliche Wiedergabe des Modalverbs sollen in den deutschen Mundarten Nordmährens. Als Quelle wurden die Fragebücher zur Erstellung des Sprachatlasses der deutschen historischen Dialekte in der Tschechischen Republik herangezogen. Von dem Paradigma des untersuchten Verbs wurden folgende Wortformen berücksichtigt: 1. und 3. Pers. Sg. Indik. Präs. und 3. Pers. Plur. Indik. Präs. sowie der Konjunktiv Präteritum in der 2. und 3. Pers. Sg. Anhand des festgestellten räumlich verteilten Formenbestandes kann der untersuchte Sprachraum in drei Teilgebiete unterteilt werden: Östlicher Teil (Neu-Titschein, Troppau, Fulnek, Odrau usw.), Nordwestlicher Teil (Freudenthal, Jägerndorf usw.) und Westlicher Teil (Römerstadt, Mährisch Schönberg usw.). Beim Vergleich der beschriebenen Formenvielfalt mit dem entsprechenden Formenbestand des unmittelbar angrenzenden Schönhengsts fällt auf, dass die in Nordmähren eher isoliert vorkommenden e-Formen bzw. Formen mit anlautendem postalveolaren Spiranten im Schönhengst relativ weit verbreitet sind. Beim Vergleich mit der frnhd. Geschäftssprache in Mähren kann trotz aller Unterschiede eine gemeinsame Tendenz beobachtet werden. Die s-Schreibung im Anlaut nimmt in nördlicher Richtung zu, bis sie in Nordmähren zur einzigen Variante wird.

Der Beitrag fokussiert auf die Ereignis- und Argument-Struktur in polnischen Formen mit mieć und Partizipien der ein- und dreistelligen Verben. In der bisherigen Forschung wurde die Herausbildung derartiger „neuer“ Tempus- und ggf. Diathese-Formen im Kontext diverser grammatischer Parameter entweder postuliert oder entscheidend in Frage gestellt. Die hier vorgeschlagene Herangehensweise baut zum einen auf rollensemantischen und ereignisstrukturellen Theorien der Dekomposition auf, zum anderen werden anschließend die anscheinend konstruktionstypischen Ambiguitäten erwogen. On the event and argument structure of one- and three-place verbs in Polish preterite tense forms vs. “new” periphrastic forms with miećThis paper aims at analyzing the argument and event structure of the constructions with the verb mieć and partially reanalyzed participles, which are described as the “new perfect” in contemporary Polish. These forms are most frequently analyzed in terms of transitivity, aspect and other overt grammatical criteria so that the limits of their grammatical analysis seem to be reached. This paper offers a model that is oriented on the decomposition concepts event and argument structure, concepts of generalized semantic roles and that accordingly allows to evaluate the elaborated limits of grammatical analysis.

The purpose of the article is to identify the features of the expression of temporal future tense semantics in various types of subordinate clauses of complex sentences, which so far have not received adequate coverage in linguistic literature. Analyzed are utterances with complex sentences containing direct speech, obtained with the random sampling method from the German fictional and publicistic texts. The total volume of the analyzed material makes up 1089 linguistic units with future tense semantics. In spite of dependent character of predication in the subordinate clause, the explication of future tense semantics in it is very heterogeneous. The most frequent types of subordinate clauses with future-oriented meaning in both analyzed discourses are conditional clauses, attribute, object, and subject clauses as well as subordinate clauses of time and purpose. The diverse repertoire of linguistic means, among which are not only grammatical ones (for example, Präsens, Futur I, Perfekt, Konditionalis I, Präteritum Konjunktiv), but also lexical and grammatical (for example, modal verb constructions), allows of formal and semantic variation, revealing a certain sensitivity in relation to discursive characteristics of the utterance. The most significant explicators of future tense semantics in the subordinate clause are the grammatical forms Präsens and Futur I. Präsens is characterized by high frequency in all types of subordinate clauses and “neutrality” against Futur I, which has limitations when used, for example, in conditional clauses, subordinate clauses of time and purpose, in view of their future time orientation. Futur I can also serve to focus attention on the upcoming action, which contributes to frequency of its use in dependent predication. The semantics of perfect forms, modal verbs, their functional synonyms and conjunctive forms also reveals certain combination preferences by expressing future tense semantics in a subordinate clause.

The article deals with foreign languages teaching, namely German, with the help of the Skype communication system. In the XXI century, the use of interactive methods and Internet resources in the educative process is a promising direction for modern education modernization. The advantages of learning in Skype include the convenient schedule for classes both for the teacher and the student, personal freedom, residence interdependence, use of the full range of Internet resources, authenticity of texts, audio and video files, etc. Owning to the use of the full range of Internet resources, this kind of training improves monologic and dialogical speech, listening comprehension and writing skills, and promotes the development of various competencies. The most popular and useful sites containing materials for teaching German which facilitate and vary the work with the help of Skype are analyzed. Among them are Deutsche Welle; Der Weg. Portal für Deutschlernende; Deutschlernerblog für Deutschlerner in aller Welt; Mein Deutschbuch. The subject matter of these sites such as topics, grammar and lexical materials, audio and video are overviewed. The possibilities and advantages of each site are analyzed, for which purpose it is possible to use one or another section while learning with the help of Skype. Recommendations for using specific sites and sections to prepare for the German language exam to obtain an internationally recognized certificate are formulated. As an example, the article provides tutorials and links to specific sites for teaching in Skype on the topic “Food in our lives” at level A2. This lexical theme is proposed to be studied in parallel with such grammar materials as “Substantiv und Artikel”, “Perfekt”, “Präteritum”, and “Modalverben”. The author supplies links with grammar exercises that contain lexical material on the selected subject, which contributes to a better acquisition of new material and consolidating already learned grammatical themes. The article contains links to the Deutsche Welle website with lessons have been already developed within the lexical theme on-line and off-line, as well as topics for projects, tasks for socio-cultural development of students, proverbs and set expressions, links with texts for reading and listening comprehension.

Der Artikel widmet sich der Anwendung von Dramapädagogik im Fremdsprachenunterricht. Im Fokus steht der Grammatikunterricht in Tschechisch als Fremdsprache. Der Text stellt eine Pilotstudie vor, die sich auf den Unterricht des Präteritums in einem Kurs für Universitätsstudierende in Deutschland konzentriert. Im Rahmen dieser Studie wurde die Dramagrammatik in einer modifizierten Form angewendet. Dieser Ansatz kombiniert bewusstes Auseinandersetzen mit Grammatik und das Handeln in Kommunikationssituationen mittels dramatischer Kunstformen. Es wird angenommen, dass die anhand der Dramagrammatik unterrichteten Studienteilnehmenden bessere Ergebnisse im Bereich der Grammatik erzielen. Weiter wird erwartet, dass die Anwendung von Dramagrammatik die Motivation fördert, am Unterricht aktiv teilzunehmen und sich mit der tschechischen Sprache auseinanderzusetzen.

SUMMARY In this second part of a two-part study of the origins of African American Vernacular English (AAVE), specific structural features of this dialect are examined and the argument is made that they arose via a process of language shift by Africans toward the white settler dialects of the southern American colonies in the 17th through 19th centuries. Essentially, the author agrees with dialec-tologists that AAVE was never itself a creole, but rather the result of partially successful acquistion of settler dialects by Africans who restructured the target in various ways. On the whole, three kinds of explanation for the structural features of AAVE are offered. First, as dialectologists have argued, certain features of AAVE such as negative copula/perfect ain't, invariant don't, negative concord etc., were simply adopted without much change from settler dialects. The same is true of certain phonological features such as the use of /n/ for /ng/ in participles and gerunds like walking and so on. Second, several features of AAVE appear to have resulted from the effects of imperfect second language learning, resulting in simplification or loss of certain morphological apparatus, for instance in the copula and auxiliary systems and in verbal and nominal inflection. This kind of simplification is quite common in cases of (untutored) second language acquisition, as well as in creole formation. Hence the tendency to view such features as 'creole', when they are not in fact uniquely creole features. Third, despite this caveat, there is strong evidence that several distinctive AÀVE features can be explained as the result of substratum 'transfer' (or retention) of creole structural and/or semantic properties. Features which can be explained in this way include negative preterite ain 't remote perfect BEEN and habitual be. Certain phonological features such as /d/ for /ð/ etc, also appear due to creole and/or African substrate influence. In some cases (e.g., variable copula absence) the effects of simplification and substratum transfer may have reinforced each other. In short, though AAVE was never itself a creole, it was created by Africans, and bears the distinctive marks of that creation. RÉSUMÉ Dans la deuxième moitié de cet article, qui traite des origines de l'anglais vernaculaire afro-américain (AVAA), l'auteur porte son attention sur les traits structuraux qui individualisent ce dialecte. Il soutient qu'ils sont apparus lors de l'assimilation linguistique des africains lorsqu'ils firent l'acquisition des dialectes des colons blancs du sud des États-Unis, du XIIe au XIXe siècle. L'auteur est en accord avec les dialectologues qui ont soutenu que l'AVAA n'a jamais été une langue creole, mais plutôt un parler que les Africains ont modifié de diverses façons en raison du fait qu'ils n'ont que partiellement réussi à s'assimiler l'ensemble du système de la langue des colons blancs. L'auteur a trois genres d'explications à offrir quant à l'origine de chacun des traits structuraux. Premièrement, en accord avec ce qu'ont soutenu les dialectologues, il soutient que certains traits, tels la forme négative/parfaite de la copule, ain't, le don't invariable et l'utilisation obligatoire de plusieurs négations dans une même proposition, proviendraient des dialectes des colons sans subir quelque modification d'importance. Il en irait de même de certains traits phonologiques, tels le remplacement de /n/ par /n/ dans les formes du participe présent et du gérondif, {walking), et ainsi de suite. Deuxièmement, certains traits de l'AVAA sembleraient provenir des effets de l'acquisition imparfaite d'une langue seconde, aboutissant à la simplification ou à la perte de certains systèmes morphologiques, par exemple celui de la copule et des auxiliaires et celui de la flexion nominale et verbale. Ce genre de simplification serait fort fréquent dans des situations d'acquisition 'sur le vif', d'une langue seconde, autant que lors de la formation des langues creoles. D'où selon l'auteur la tendance à y voir des traits 'creoles', alors qu'en fait ces traits se retrouvent également ailleurs que dans les creoles. Malgré cette mise en garde, l'auteur soutient qu'il y a de fortes raisons de croire que plusieurs traits caractéristiques de l'AVAA s'expliqueraient comme étant le résultat d'un 'transfert' (ou d'une préservation) de caractéristiques structurelles et/ou sémantiques creoles. Parmi les traits qui pourraient s'expliquer ainsi, on compte ain't, marque du prétérit négatif, BEEN, marque du parfait lointain et be, marque du fréquentatif. Certains traits phonologiques, comme par exemple le remplacement de /ð/ par /d/, et ainsi de suite, sembleraient s'expliquer par une influence creole et/ou africaine. Dans certains cas (ainsi, la possibilité de laisser tomber la copule) les effets de la simplification et du transfert de traits du substrat africain se seraient peut-être renforcés les uns les autres. En bref, selon l'auteur, bien que l'AVAA n'aurait jamais été une langue creole, c'est une langue qu'auraient créé des Africains, et on y trouverait toujours les marques distinctes de cette création. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG In diesem Artikel, dem zweiten Teil einer zweiteiligen Studie über die Ur-sprünge des einheimischen Englisch der Afro-Amerikaner (EEAA), untersucht der Autor spezielle strukturelle Eigenschaften dieser Sprache. Er versucht nachzuweisen, daß sich diese strukturellen Eigenschaften aus einem ProzeB der Sprachverschiebung bei den Afro-Amerikanern in Richtung der Siedlerdialekte des kolonialen Südens der Vereinigten Staaten während des 17. und 19. Jahr-hunderts ableiten lassen. lm wesentlichen stimmt er überein mit dem von den Dialektologen bezogenen Standpunkt, daB das EEAA niemals ein Kreol v/ar, sondern daB es das Ergebnis eines nur teilweise erfolgreichen Erwerbs der Siedlerdialekte durch die Afrikaner ist. Diese partiell erworbenen Siedlerdialekte wurden dann auf verschiedene Weise von den Afrikanern verändert. Ins-gesamt präsentiert er drei Erklärungsansätze für die charakteristischen strukturellen Eigenschaften des EEAA. Erstens, wie schon von den Dialektologen festgestellt, wurden bestimmte Eigenschaften des EEAA, wie die negierte Ko-pula/das negierte Perfekt ain't, das unveränderliche dont, die negative Kon-gruenz, usw, direkt und ohne wesentliche Veränderungen aus den Siedlerdia-lekten übernommen. Das gleiche gilt auch für bestimmte phonologische Eigenschaften, wie der Gebrauch von /ng/ anstelle von /n/ in Partizipien und Gerun-dien wie walking, usw. Zweitens scheinen einige Eigenschaften des EEAA das Resultat eines unvollständigen Erwerbs der Siedlerdialekte zu sein, was zur Vereinfachung oder zum vollstandigen Verlust bestimmter morphologischer Eigenschaften geführt hat, wie zum Beispiel die Veränderungen innerhalb des Kopular- und Auxiliarsystems und in der Verbal- und Nominalflektion. Diese Art Vereinfachung tritt häufig beim ungelenkten Zweitspracherwerb auf, sowie bei der Kreolgenese, was erklärt, warum solche Eigenschaften fälschlich als typisch für Kreole angesehen werden. Drittens gibt es eindeutige Hinweise, daB einige für das EEAA charakteristische Eigenschaften das Ergebnis von Substrattransfer (oder Erhalt) sind. So zum Beispiel das negative Präteritum ain't, das entfernte Perfekt been und das habituelle be. Phonologische Eigenschaften wie der Gebrauch von /d/ anstelle von /ð/ scheinen ebenso von einem Kreol bzw. einem afrikanischm Substrat beeinfluBt. In bestimmten Fallen (so zum Beispiel die variable Abwesenheit der Kopula) scheint es, daB sich die Ergebnisse von Vereinfachung und Transfer aus dem Substrat wechselseitig bestarkt haben. Zusammenfassend läßt sich also feststellen, daB das EEAA nicht von einem Kreol abstammt, sondern von Afrikanern erschaffen worden ist und deutliche Merkmale dieses Kreationsprozesses aufweist.

Zusammenfassung This paper analyses the increase in the use of the preterite in spoken Alemannic in south-western Germany. There are almost no recent studies that explore the preterite in Upper German because of the widespread hypothesis that there is no preterite in Upper German (except for the verb sein ‘to be’) due to the loss of the preterite in Upper German (Oberdeutscher Präteritumschwund). In contrast to this, I account for a language change in the timespan from 1974 to 2013 in which the preterite becomes more frequent in relation to the perfect and is now part of the spoken Alemannic in south-western Germany. To account for this, I use a combination of a real time and an apparent time analysis. Additionally, all verbs forming a preterite have a specific semantic value, i. e. an inherent meaning of state. This means they are durative (=the situation lasts for a certain period of time), atelic (=the situation has no terminal point at which the situation is complete) and non-dynamic (=the situation involves no change). Perfect forms on the other hand do not have this specific semantic value.

Abstract Recent research in syntax and corpus linguistics has shown how the German Perfekt (present perfect) and Präteritum (simple past) are widely used in written language—even though these tenses are commonly described in DAF (German as a foreign language) materials as used respectively in the spoken and written forms. While these analyses only focus on written corpora, an extensive study on the use of tenses in spoken interaction is still missing. In this paper, I try to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the use of Perfekt and Präteritum in the recordings of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials, held in Frankfurt am Main, from December 20, 1963, to August 19, 1965, and available on the web page of the Fritz Bauer Institute. Textual analyses of the depositions of five former German prisoners of the Polish concentration camp show that German native speakers use both tenses in their spoken interactions. These results widely contradict their depiction in DAF materials, textbooks, and grammars. Furthermore, the types of Präteritum found are far more diverse than is traditionally held by scholars, who claimed that the use of this tense in spoken language is limited to verbs such as sein (to be), haben (to have) and modals, such as können (can), müssen (must), sollen (should), etc. The outcome of this study shows how the difference between Perfekt and Präteritum is determined by the subjective attitude of the speakers in relation to the information they want to convey.

AbstractThe systemic differences between German and Spanish verb forms, and their values and uses, often pose a problem in translation. This is the case of the interpretation of temporal meaning in the German Präteritum (in literary texts) for a correct selection of tense in Spanish. The contrastive study of temporal expression in the German Präteritum and the possible Spanish equivalents of pretérito perfect simple (simple past) and pretérito imperfecto (imperfect) reveal the need to study temporality from two perspectives: tenses as time expressions together with other textual elements, and tenses as morphosyntactic and semantic phenomena in the sentence.

The fascinating complexity of the German past tenses has created many scientific contributions within the pedagogic, linguistic and SLA communities. Not often though the findings of the theoretical branches have been applied for pedagogic purposes. The article aims at bridging this gap by elaborating the semantic respectively pragmatic concepts of post-state, distance and aspect within a focus on form approach. The concepts of post-state and distance help to present systematically the different readings of the German present perfect and past tense. Reflections on aspectual meanings lead to insights into L2 decoding and coding preferences of learners whose L1 grammaticalises aspect. I propose several proactive and reactive focus on form activities (input flood, input enhancement, metalinguistic feedback, dictogloss) to increase the salience of the elaborated concepts within the L2 instruction of the German past tenses.

In grammar and textbooks of German as a foreign language the German perfect tense (Perfekt) is mostly presented as an alternative to the preterite tense (Präteritum). However, the German perfect tense itself deserves greater attention due to its wide range of usages. This tense can mark events with reference points located either before, simultaneous with and even after the speech time. For Thai learners of German it has been established that difficulties in learning how to use the German perfect tense are not primarily concerned with problems of choosing between the perfect and the preterite but rather between the perfect tense and the present tense. This paper focuses on the aspect of "completeness", comparable to the perfective aspect, leading to different effects in the usage of the German perfect. Since German is mostly learned as a second foreign language after English, a contrastive analysis of similarities and differences between the perfect tenses in English and German have to be included in the analysis. In the conclusion, a possible description of the German perfect tense for learners of German as a foreign language is suggested.
