Willhelm Wundt has come to be known as the founder of experimental psychology. William James is seen as the founder of scientific psychology in America, largely because of the impact that The Principles of Psychology had on psychology in the United States. In seeing James as the central forebear of scientific psychology in this country, many applied psychologists have underestimated the importance of his contributions for their professional ambitions. It is argued that close examination of James's more philosophically oriented works reveals a set of principles (i.e., pragmatism, pluralism, rad

Abstract Both William James and Gilles Deleuze labeled their philosophies "radical empiricism." In this context, this essay explores the similarities and differences between James's radical empiricism (particularly as it is present early inches Principles of Psychology) and Deleuze's "transcendental empiricism" (particularly as set forth in The Logic of Sense). These accounts then inform a view of philosophy understood as a creative art. This art demands flexible habits--what James termed "genius"--in a changing world. Accordingly, radically empirical accounts of creativity and genius are sket

Contrary to received wisdom in psychology, William James did not oppose postulating unconscious processes. This mistaken belief stems from a misreading of a passage in his Principles concerned with disproving the metaphysical notion that mental states are composed of elementary mental units. The term unconscious had been co-opted by individuals who supported this position. Unconscious did not mean then what it means now. Analysis of the rest of the Principles, his later works, and his reactions to the works of others reveals that James actually supported what we would now term unconscious proc

It is argued here that William James's famous stream of consciousness, as he addressed it in The Principles of Psychology, is not after all analogous to a stream or river of water, but rather it consists of a succession of discrete instances or states of consciousness. Already in 1890, James had implicitly arrived at his later explicit conception of consciousness as made up of individual “drops” or “pulses.” These are temporally adjacent each one to the next one; they have nothing else between them except for possible time gaps or interruptions of consciousness, the frequency of which James wa

It is a testimony to the genius of William James that scarce a lecture on attention passes without the speaker quoting him on the subject. This has, however, also been a cause for concern: do we really understand any more about this amorphous topic now, than we did when James wrote Principles of Psychology? It might occur to more jaundiced reviewers that the fact that James abandoned psychology completely after finishing this great book implies that he was beaten by the subject of attention, for, in many senses, the study of attention is at the very heart of the science of psychology. Stream of consciousness is a psychological theory which is presented by Professor William James in his book "The Principles of Psychology". Stream of consciousness is a continuous flow of sense-perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and memories in the human mind. This term is reserved for indicating an approach to the presentation of psychological aspects of character in fiction. In Urdu fiction, Syed Sajjad Zaheer first used this technique in his novel "London ki Aik Raat" very well.

As in the preceding article of the present series, I continue to examine William James's thought in The Principles of Psychology regarding what he there called “ejective consciousness.” James held that, in certain altered states, and perhaps at other times as well, mental occurrences may take place that are not components of the individual's original stream of consciousness. Usually if not always, such “split-off” occurrences comprise a second stream, which, according to James, is no less conscious and personal than the original stream is. The current part of the lecture recounts the work of American psychologist and philosopher William James. His main works “The Principles of Psychology” and “The Varieties of Religious Experience” are discussed, his ideas on consciousness and personality are considered, and their influence on psychology and psychotherapy is traced. In both cases there is a detailed examination of consciousness which looks at its physiological concomitants. Where James is concerned, this physiological study is found mainly within his Principles of Psychology (1890). In Vasubandhu's case the physiological preconditions of conscious life is inherited from traditional Buddhist psychology (skandhas), but are expanded into the Yogacara concept of the alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness).

The relation between whole-field optical flow and the visual control of self-motion towards or away from significant objects has been central to the development of ecological psychology. This paper considers recent developments in tactile research and conjectures what Gibson might have to say about employing tactile displays to convey self-motion and/or looming. The auth
