A random sample of 1009 adult male prison inmates from 13 prisons covering short-, medium- and long-term establishments across England and Wales was interviewed about sexual behaviour, drug use and tattooing, inside and outside prison. We report here on their same-sex sexual activity. Thirty-seven men reported having engaged in sexual activity with a man during adulthood. Twenty-two men reported having had sex with a man in prison. Indirect support for this prevalence rate was given by sexually transmitted disease rates and prisoners' estimates of same-sex sexual activity occurring in prison.

Prisons are probably the most debatable institutions within the Criminal Justice System in any given country and as such demand contemporary explanation and understanding. Despite the fact that prisons affect the life of many people, not only of those incarcerated but also of their families and friends, nevertheless they do not receive the necessary attention; instead they remain the most enigmatic and less interesting organizations amongst the Criminal Justice System in general. This paper, by using a literature review approach, looks into some of the most important debates, similarities and d

The coronavirus pandemic swept across the world in 2020, having widespread and dramatic impacts on social life. Prisons in England and Wales implemented a lock down regime for public health purposes that suppressed the spread of coronavirus but continues to have an impact on the quality of life for prisoners. This article is based on a small-scale ethnographic study of prison managers in an English prison. This builds upon studies that have documented the experiences of prison managers in England during 21st century. These studies have illustrated that prior to the pandemic, prison management

The crimmigration landscape in the UK is much lamented. Reference is frequently made to the recent creation of dozens of new immigration offences and a sharp increase in the administrative detention of immigrants during the last two decades. In particular, the prison has recently become an acute site of crimmigration, with separate prisons for foreign nationals (Kaufman, 2013). Norway, on the other hand, has traditionally been regarded as an exception. The treatment of criminals and outsiders is described as inclusive and rehabilitative and focused on their successful return to society. Howeve

We know a considerable amount about the difficulties female prisoners face before, during, and after sentence. Prisons have attempted to respond to this by introducing such devices as needs analyses, sentence plans, reviews, and the like. This article reports on a project that examined organizational responses to prisoners' needs. The fieldwork was carried out in three women's prisons in England and involved interviews with 200 prisoners, both pre- and postrelease. Abstract Globally, prisoners tend to come from marginalized and socially disadvantaged sections of the society and exhibit a high incidence of ill health, linked to social exclusion and multiple complex needs. Prisons therefore offer an important opportunity to tackle inequality and injustice, through promoting health, reducing reoffending and facilitating community reintegration. This paper reports on and critically discusses findings from an evaluative research study, which aimed to identify and explore impacts of prisoners’ participation in an innovative social and therapeutic horticultural

This paper reviews the major organisational changes made to the delivery of mental healthcare in prisons in England and Wales since the turn of the century. These changes have included the introduction of ‘in-reach’ services for prisoners with serious mental illness, replicating the work of community mental health teams. In addition, healthcare budgets and commissioning responsibilities have been transferred to the National Health Service. Measures to reduce the rate of suicide in prisons are also considered.

Abstract Framed by the limited and now dated ethnographic research on the prison drug economy, this article offers new theoretical and empirical insights into how drugs challenge the social order in prisons in England and Wales. It draws on significant original and rigorous ethnographic research to argue that the ‘era of hard drugs’ has been superseded by an ‘era of new psychoactive drugs’, redefining social relations, transforming the prison illicit economy, producing new forms of prison victimization and generating far greater economic power and status for suppliers. The article examines the peculiarities of the development of a progressive prison system in England. It is noted that the prerequisites for the implementation of this system were: an increase in the number of convicts, and therefore, prisoners; lack of prisons; decentralization and inefficiency of the prison system at that time; demoralizing consequences of execution of punishments. In 1838, the main regulations for reforming the penitentiary system of England were submitted to the government. The result of the proposed reform was the formation of a progressive prison system. Abstract Prisons offer states access to a population that is at high risk of morbidity. The UK austerity policy adopted in 2010 led to a 22% reduction (-£2.71bn) in prison spending by 2017. Whilst the number of prison officers dropped by 30%, the long-term impact of austerity on prison health in England has not been systematically contextualised. This research seeks to articulate the impact of austerity on prison health in England from the perspective of national policymakers. Semi-structured interviews (X: 66 min) were conducted with 30 key prison policymakers. Constructivist grounded theory
