Resumen

The article presents the results of the sociological survey on the demand for social work specialists and their professional self-realization in practical activity in the regional bodies of social protection system (on the example of the Irkutsk region). In the conditions of the development of social protection system for the population, there is a shortage of social work specialists and the problem of their employment after graduation. The article analyzes the issue of employment of specialists in social work and the development prospects of this job market segment. The authors provide the results of the sociological survey on the opinion of social work graduates of Baikal State University on the prestige or the lack of prestige of the profession and on the problems of placement and employment. On the basis of the research, recommendations were prepared for the current students majoring in sociology for their successful professional self-realization and obtaining employment in their field of study. The article also provides the results of the expert interview with the participation of the heads and experts of social protection authorities of the Irkutsk region. The experts characterized the need for social work professionals in general, and in a social protection system in particular. The study revealed the problem of matching between the professional training of social workers (according to the educational level and specialization) and the positions held. On the basis of the research, recommendations are proposed to enhance the prestige of the specialty «Social Work» and the demand for such specialists, and also how to increase the chances for professional self-realization of social work professionals.

Resumen

The article analyzes the components of the psychological characteristics of investigative activities through the prism of compliance with the principles of criminal procedure legislation in the implementation of tactics in the production of investigative actions. High requirements to the level of training of employees of preliminary investigation bodies are emphasized, among which the necessity of formation of knowledge about professionally significant components of psychological characteristics of their further professional activity is highlighted. The authors analyze the main directions of professional activity of the investigator (social, search (cognitive), reconstructive, communicative, organizational and certification activities) during the preliminary investigation of criminal cases. It is noted that the high prestige of the investigator's profession has a positive role, encouraging law graduates to choose a profession that society needs. At the same time, if the graduate is guided solely by considerations of prestige, "romantic aura" of the profession, the prospects of promotion, the level of material security, his motivation can hardly be called positive.

There is a sharp contradiction between the high importance of work performed for society and a low professional status of general education teachers in the Russian society.The article presents outcomes of a sociological survey “Professional Identity of Modern Teacher” carried out by the Monitoring Research Department of the Moscow State University of Psychology & Education in the spring of 2016.This survey reflects the teachers’ self-assessment of the status of their profession.A total of 1,024 teachers of general education organizations were surveyed in 9 federal districts of the Russian Federation, except the Crimea.The survey was conducted on a three-stage stratified probabilistic sample.The research model of the teacher's social status includes the analysis of the three leading components: prestige, respect and satisfaction with work process.According to the results of the survey, despite the teachers' low assessment of the social prestige of their professional group, they perceive their activities as respected by students and their parents, and also feel satisfied with the results of their work.

The concept of professional ethics is partly comprised of what a professional should or should not do in the work place. It also encompasses a much greater part of the professionals life. If a professional is to have ethics then that person needs to adopt that conduct in all of his dealings. There are professional codes of ethics to consider and adopt in the way professionals conduct themselves in and out of the work place. This article explaines things that are included in professional ethichs, consist of concepts like: efficiency, professionalism, working well, little waste, diligence, punctuality, frugality, humbleness, spirit of prestige, need for achievement, open-minded, self-discipline and responsibility, self-reliance and the interpretation of religious thoughts. These ethics will be the basis of national development and needs to be reidentified in this 21st century.

Resumen

Various studies show that the rating of the social workers profession is not very prestige in comparison with other professions. Often the leading motives why people choose to do social work are those guided by relative ideals, such as the desire to help people or to accomplish something socially significant not because of the prestige of profession. However, judgements about the occupational prestige in the wider community depend largely on the professional beliefs of social workers themselves and on how social workers themselves are positioning their profession. The focus of the authors of this article on the occupational prestige is analysed from the perspective of social workers in the sector. The study was carried out using a quantitative approach. In this study, the occupational prestige is considered in the context of symbolic capital. According to P. Bourdieu all forms of symbolic capital accumulates through relations of exchange The study results indicate that a significant part of the respondents feel the lack of authority and symbolic power. The symbolic capital in the form of professional capital is an essential factor of the authority and symbolic power of the social worker's profession, which, in turn, affects the occupational prestige in the society.

Abstract Recent changes in the world of work have resulted in a greater level of work intensification. Whilst there have been gains in productivity, workers have been subject to increasing demands of both a physical and mental nature, which tend to have a negative impact on their well-being. Our interest in understanding this phenomenon has led to a qualitative study that seeks to analyse the experiences of professional graduates working in organizations that use high-performance practices, which tend to generate work intensification. The respondents revealed both the negative implications of work intensification, such as an increase in the working day, excessive pressure and sacrifices in their personal lives, as well as other aspects considered positive, such as learning, professional growth, autonomy and financial gains. These latter aspects deserve attention, since they can help us understand what leads qualified workers to accept intensified working practices.

The paper presents the Spherical Model of Interests and Competence Beliefs proposed by T. Tracey (Tracey, 1997, 2002, 2010; Tracey, Rounds, 1996a, 1996b). This concept integrates Holland’s RIASEC theory (1985, 1997) and the People/Things, Data/Ideas dimensions of human activity according to Prediger (1982), supplementing them with prestige, which is an indicator of professional interests and choices. The resulting three-dimensional model allows for a more complete and detailed analysis of professional interests. It includes 8 areas of basic interest and 10 types of specific interests, depending on the preferred level of prestige. The text also describes three instruments to assess professional interests, based on the discussed concept.

Professionals who are respected in the wider community can influence public opinion and shape societal value system. While in a number of European countries teaching profession is popular and respected, in many other including Latvia its prestige is rather low. There is an ongoing debate in Latvia how to raise it; therefore, the aim of this research was to study teachers’ views about the status and prestige of their occupation. The quantitative research design was developed. The web survey of teachers (n=1773) confirmed that teachers perceived their occupational prestige in Latvia as low and believed that in other European countries it is much higher. Teachers did not feel assessed adequately to their contribution. In general, teachers were concerned about their professional autonomy and freedom as they felt frustrated, overloaded and over-controlled from different sides. The respondents believed that teachers are authorities and opinion leaders also outside school that indicated positive aspects of occupational prestige. They admitted that teachers should have an ability to adapt in order to respond on contemporary societal and technological changes. Some suggestions were developed on how to improve occupational prestige: from a system perspective, more positive and supportive attitude towards education system and teachers is expected from municipalities, policy makers and the line ministry. Meanwhile great part of the respondents believed that teachers themselves should be responsible for the forming of positive image of their profession and should communicate with society more effectively on the specificity of teaching and challenges they face in contemporary conditions. The shortage of professional accountants has been attributed to the perception accounting students hold about their intended professional careers and this affects their self-image, attitude towards the career and their confidence in the profession. Therefore, this paper critically appraises the perception of undergraduate accounting students towards professional accounting career in Nigeria. One hundred and fifty (150) accounting students from three universities in Nigeria participated in this study and data were elicited from the respondents with the aid of well-structured questionnaires. Descriptive Statistics and Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient were used for data analysis.Findings showed that students are motivated to pursue professional accounting career by combination of prestige, extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Furthermore, results indicated that grit personality, prestige, extrinsic and intrinsic factors exhibited strong and positive correlation with student’s intention to pursue accounting career. However, social and reference factors displayed positive but weak correlation. Additionally, students perceive professional examinations to be very tough, expensive, time-consuming and frightening. Thus, they refrain from writing professional examinations and that could be detrimental to the future of professional accounting career in Nigeria. Therefore, this research suggests that educational institutions, accounting professional bodies and career counselors play their roles to inspire, support and motivate accounting students to work towards professionalism.

Resumen

Analyses of the combined General Social Surveys for 1972-1983 are used to estimate propensity to divorce (proportion of ever-married persons who have ever been divorced or legally separated) for major occupational categories and for selected occupations. Separate analyses for males and females show significant estimated effects of occupation on propensity to divorce even when occupational prestige, age, age at first marriage, income, education, and number of children are statistically controlled. Contrary to the findings of previous studies, male professional and technical workers do not have the lowest propensity to divorce. Propensity to divorce for male professional and technical workers, when adjusted for income, occupational prestige, age, age at first marriage, education, and number of children, is higher than for any occupational category except transport equipment operatives. For female workers, on the other hand, professional and technical workers do have the lowest propensity to divorce among nonfarm workers.

The professional social prestige practiced by: Social Assistants, Biologists, Dentists, Nurses, Engineers, Pharmacists, Physicists, Physical Therapists, Phonoaudiologists, Physicians, Psychologists, Chemists, and Sociologists was scaled by psychophysical methods of pair comparisons (indirect) and the magnitude estimations (direct). The results showed: 1) both of the methods yield substantially different scaling; 2) the pair comparisons scale (proportion or z) is a logarithmic function of the magnitude estimations scale; 3) the pair of comparison scale (proportion or z) is a linear function of the logarithms of the magnitude estimations scale; and 4) a high correlation (rho = .95) between the degrees of prestige attributed to the professions obtained by both methods. With these results we can conclude that: 1) the continuous of social prestige (not metric) scaled by these two methods yield a relation similar to the obtained in the sensorial continuous (metric); and 2) the continuous of social prestige has the following characteristics: quantitative, prothetic and non-qualitative (metathetic).

Abstract Introduction. Since the dawn of time, one of the characteristics of the medical profession has been its high prestige. It should be underlined, however, that up until the middle of the 19th century doctors were almost exclusively men. For women, who on the wave of emancipation movements, sought to obtain formal opportunities for becoming a physician, studying medicine and obtaining medical practices were rendered impossible and ultimately hindered due to sex discrimination. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the medical profession has begun to succumb to feminization and women’s domination has remained till this day. Aim. The aim of this article is to present results of research analyzing the position of female doctors in the hierarchy of professional prestige. Material and methods. Results presented in the article are an outcome of qualitative and quantitative questionnaire studies. Quantitative studies were conducted in 2018 on a representative group of 600 adult Poles. In qualitative research, 29 direct interviews with female doctors were conducted. The research sample was selected using snowball sampling. The respondents were physicians with different seniority who were in the process of specialization or with the title of specialist in the field of eighteen medical specialties. Results. Among twenty of the evaluated professions, the highest positions in the hierarchy of prestige was obtained by physicians, firefighters and university professors. In direct interviews, female doctors confirmed that their profession enjoys societies’ respect; however, the level of respect for numerous reasons has decreased compared to the past. Some of the respondents attributed this fall to feminization of medicine. Conclusions. A discrepancy was observed between the physicians’ and society’s opinions. In physicians’ opinion, for various reasons (also due to feminization), the prestige of the medical profession has significantly decreased compared to the past.

The study aims to introduce the memories of Hungarian high school teachers about their professional activities. The main aim is to investigate the experience of being a teacher during the communist era. Based on interviews with eleven retired secondary school teachers from a small town, the study attempts to depict personal life stories and identify altering pedagogical action models formed by history that are dependent on different social and political demands. With the help of the teachers’ memories, the study represents their educational paths and the way these educational professionals see the tasks, the roles, the prestige of their profession as well as the way they experienced their failures, victories, and their active and retired years.

The prestige of the civil service affects the quality of attracting resources to the public administration, and the civil service is considered as part of the public administration connected with the realization of the goals, tasks and functions of the state. The study of the factors of prestige and the attempt to formulate its model are necessary to manage the process of raising the prestige of socially important spheres of life, one of which is the protection of national interests. The article identifies and analyzes that influence the formation of the prestige of the civil service of Ukraine and leading countries. They are based on the use of official position not in the interests of society: protectionism, mutual services, use of state property for personal purposes, as well as bribes, kickbacks and other illegal mechanisms of "transformation of power into money". Also, criteria have been selected to take into account the prestige, which are a result of the efficiency of public administration and the macroeconomic environment, because they reflect the possibilities and freedom of realization of activity. Updating the prestige of the civil service is a prerequisite for successful European integration and good and efficient public administration that meets the requirements of modern times and European standards and principles of good governance. The detail analyzes the main factors influencing the prestige of the civil service. After evaluating all possible factors, we can distinguish those that most accurately and accurately reflect the results of the question under study. Measures justified to increase the level of prestige of the civil service.The effectiveness of the reform of the Ukrainian civil service must be accompanied by the creation of a professional, politically impartial, stable, highly efficient, authoritative and prestigious civil service capable of meeting the challenges of today and providing quality administrative services that meet European standards.

While there is growing interest in professional identity construction (e.g. Clarke et al., 2009), little is known about how stigma may influence the development of professional identity. Professional identity is defined as one’s professional self-concept based on attributes, beliefs, values, motives, and experiences (Ibarra, 1999; Schein, 1978). Professional identity construction under conditions of stigmatized cultural identity presents an interesting puzzle. Professional roles are defined as prestigious and provide the role holder with autonomy (Benveniste, 1987) and, often, a degree of privilege. However, stigmatized persons are often accorded little prestige and/or privilege because their identities are tainted. Thus, the purpose of our research is to build and enrich theory around professional identity construction by investigating the development of professional identity under conditions of stigmatized cultural identity. To accomplish this goal, we study narratives written by 20 prominent African American journalists (Terry, 2007) who discuss what it means to be both Black and reporters.

Professor Cornel Tiberiu Opris was the founder and Chair of the Clinic and University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Cluj, after the Education Reform of 1948. The article illustrates how the founder of these institutions led a valiant struggle for obtaining and arranging a location for the newly established Faculty of Dentistry, within the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy. Professor Cornel Tiberiu Opriş established himself as the most prodigious researcher at the Faculty for over a quarter-century, until his retirement, introducing his original conception in the therapeutic and surgical field. He created in Cluj-Napoca a specialist medical school by imposing national prestige for the institution that he led.

Resumen

The paper reveals the results of empirically study of factors of social work students’ professional identity significance during professional training. The respondents group consisted of 311 social work students of 1-4 years of Ukrainian higher education institutions. The low-level predominance of professional identity significance in the majority of students is defined. The development of students’ professional identity significance is due to various factors. In the 1st year – the position of students regarding to the status of a social worker in society and respect for the social worker in society; positive attitude of students to the social worker profession. In the 2nd year – a positive attitude of students to the social worker profession; personal significance of the social worker profession. In the 3rd year – a positive attitude of students to the social worker profession; students’ position about the positive impact of the future professional activity of a social worker on their life. In the 4th year – the personal significance of the social worker profession. The factor “students’ position regarding the status of a social worker in society” has a direct impact on the importance of professional identity for 3rd year students and opposite – 4th year students. The position of all students about the prestige of the social worker profession in the country does not affect their professional identity significance.

Resumen

Information about whose knowledge is accepted as important is valuable in understanding how a profession evolves. The term elders describes the individuals who control invisible networks of prestige and who determine what information is accepted for publication in professional journals. These published works stand as the foundation for the knowledge base of a discipline. The purpose of this article was to identify the elders in physical education teacher education (PETE) and to trace their academic genealogy. Elders were defined as major contributors to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education from 1981 through 1989. The articles published by these subjects were generally, but not exclusively, research-related. Hence, aspects related to faculty research performance were selected as descriptors that may facilitate comparisons of PETE professors to other groups of professors and to future PETE professors. Subjects’ gender, prestige of doctoral program, mentoring, and prestige of current institution of employment were studied as these indicators represent major correlates with research productivity.

Resumen

Digitalization affects every sphere of life including education. However, for it to be beneficial, it needs transfomation in order to fit the current situation or changes that have occurred in human life over a time.The purpose of this research is to consider the impact of the digital transformation of Russian society on the formation of young teachers’ professional identity. The constructivist approach and the "soft concepts" of identity that have developed within its framework, serve as the methodological basis of the proposed research. The results of the applied authors’ sociological study conducted in 2020 serve as the empirical basis of this study. The method of collecting information was an in-depth interview. The reseach concluded that digitalization has a positive impact on formation of professional identity of young teachers. We also note that, despite the fact that the forced transition to online education has increased the prestige of teaching, digitalization cannot be considered as an independent factor that is able to change the professional space so that it becomes more attractive for young professionals. This article challenges the assumption, frequently made in scholarship on Soviet media, that news was absent in the Soviet Union. Working across press, radio, and television, the article shows how after 1953 reform of Soviet news became a priority for journalists, editors and media professionals. The article focuses on discussions among journalists and officials about the future of journalism, arguing that journalists’ notions of professional excellence played a crucial role in shaping news coverage. In a climate of Cold War competition with western radio, new technological possibilities and changing political priorities, journalists gradually overcame their condescension towards news, emphasising its civic potential as an agent of social ‘democratisation’, and the artistic nature of reportage. This new configuration was precarious, however, and collapsed after the Czechoslovakian crisis of 1968. As the Party placed new restrictions on the flow of information, news lost its professional prestige.

BackgroundThe professional gender gap is increasingly recognised in oncology. We explored gender issues perception and gender influence on professional satisfaction/gratification among young Italian oncologists.MethodsItalian oncologists aged ≤40 years and members of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology were invited to participate in an online survey addressing workload/burnout, satisfaction in professional abilities and relations, relevant factors for professional gratification, and gender barriers. χ2 test for general association or χ2 test for trend was used to analyse the data.Results201 young oncologists participated in the survey: 67% female, 71% aged 30–40 years, 41% still in training and 82% without children. Women and men were equally poorly satisfied by the relations with people occupying superior hierarchical positions. There was heterogeneity between women and men in current (p=0.011) and expected future (p=0.007) satisfaction in professional abilities: women were more satisfied by current empathy and relations with colleagues and were more confident in their future managerial and team leader skills. The most important elements for professional gratification indicated by all participants were, in general, work–life balance (36%) and intellectual stimulation/research (32%); specifically for women, work–life balance (48%) and intellectual stimulation/research (20%); and specifically for men, career (29%) and social prestige/recognition (26%). Heterogeneity within the same gender emerged. For example, the elements indicated by men as the most important were intellectual stimulation/research (39%) and work–life balance (21%) in general, versus social prestige/recognition (24%) and career (24%), respectively, specifically for men (p<0.0001). More women versus men perceived gender issue as an actual problem (60% vs 38%, p=0.03); men underestimated gender barriers to women’s career (p=0.011).ConclusionsSatisfaction in professional abilities varied by gender. Work–life balance is important for both women and men. Stereotypes about gender issues may be present. Gender issue is an actual problem for young oncologists, mostly perceived by women.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of candidates’ perceptions of the attributes of a professional certification scheme based on competences, as well as personal factors, that may influence in the behavioral intentions toward such certification program, i.e. intention to participate in the certification process and willingness to pay for the certificate. Design/methodology/approach Based on a survey of 2,630 professionals about the “Certified Professional” program in eight European countries, the influence of the perceived attributes of the certification program and the personal characteristics of the potential candidates on their behavioral intentions are analyzed. Findings Difficulty and fairness of the certification process, credibility, innovativeness, international recognition and future usefulness of the professional certificate influence positively on the candidate’s likelihood of applying for being certified and the willingness to pay. Young professionals not holding a university diploma show high probability to participate in the certification process and intention to pay for the certificate. Practical implications Promotional efforts to launch a professional certification scheme should concentrate in creating strong associations of the certificate with the notions of international prestige, credibility and usefulness to enhance employability and professional growth. Segmentation criteria to increase communication effectiveness are defined. Originality/value In recent years, there has been a proliferation of professional certification programs in competences, and literature has advocated the need to investigate the perceived value of such systems in terms of benefits and barriers perceived by potential applicants for accreditation. The present paper aims at addressing this research gap.

This study aims to put the introduction of conscription in a new perspective by examining its effects on the careers and backgrounds of professional soldiers. It specifically considers the Dutch-speaking part of the principality of Liège in 1756–1815, and the service records of more than 2,000 men from this area. It argues that soldiers did become more representative for society at large, but this came at the cost of lowering the prestige attached to military service. Conscription effectively undermined the position of professional soldiers, without giving them proper compensation in terms of promotion or financial rewards.

Aloïs Humbert was the first scientist employed by the Musée académique de Genève, but his career as a whole has a much closer resemblance to his “gentleman scientist” contemporaries such as Henri de Saussure and Alphonse Pictet (both of whom also studied under François-Jules Pictet and contributed to the development of the museum) than to that of his successor in the post, Godefroy Lunel. His career is presented to throw light on the professionalization of science in nineteenth-century Geneva, and it is suggested that his prestige raised the status of the role of museum scientist, to the benefit of his successors.

Resumen

The aim of the study is to find ways to expand teacher efficacy by participating in foreign internships. Survey methods were used to collect the data from students. Descriptive statistics was used to examine the overall trends in foreign language teachers’ professional development. Thus, passing a training abroad leads to the development and improvement of language, professional, and cultural competencies of not only teachers, but also students; improving the skills of teachers, their motivation; increasing not only the prestige of the educational organization, but also the publication activity of university employees in world scientific publications; improving educational technologies. And most importantly, students, as direct participants of the educational process, are more than satisfied with their results. The article is of interest for the foreign language teachers.

Resumen

The article examines several aspects of the quality of educational services. The process of providing such services is examined, the problems in the field of teaching physics and mathematics are identified and the ways of problem resolution in the credit learning system are proposed. The introduction of credit learning technology allows for stimulation of students’ learning activity and an increase in their motivation and the level of academic mobility. The ways of increasing the motivational activity of the teacher as another key figure in the educational process are identified. The current remuneration system for university teachers in Kazakhstan accounts for work experience and the position held and includes additional payments for an academic degree but does not stimulate teachers for continuous additional training. On the other hand, the salary volume does not contribute to the high social prestige of this profession, which is complex and requires genuine pedagogical skills. The quality of teaching staff is associated with the quality of education acquired by students. In the context of the credit rating system, it is not only students who earn credits, but also teachers who should substantiate and improve their qualifications measured by their rating.

Research has shown a positive association between cues of physical formidability and perceptions of status, supporting a generic “bigger-is-better” heuristic. However, does better also lead to appraisals as bigger? Recent research suggests that the perceptual association between body size and social status can also be explained in terms of prestige. To test whether perceptions of prestige lead to higher appraisals of body size, we examined whether people apply a “better is bigger bias” (BBB) in football, where performance and body size tend to be uncorrelated. In two studies, we examined real coalitional sports groups on a national (Study 1) and team level (Study 2), and we manipulated target performance in an experimental third study. Results suggest that perceived performance significantly predicted both the perceived height (Studies 2 and 3) and perceived weight (Studies 1 and 2) of professional football players, supporting the BBB. Support for the team had a positive effect on body size estimations of the players; however, we did not find any support for winner or loser effects. We discuss these results in light of individual versus team performance and coalitional affiliation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine which of the two variables would be a more reliable proxy for quality of university training: graduates’ satisfaction with their degree program, or institutional prestige. Design/methodology/approach Graduates of professional psychology and teaching programs from three Chilean universities responded to a questionnaire asking their perception of different aspects of their degree program and experiences in their first employment. The three universities differ significantly in the proportion of applicants admitted, and in their prestige. Findings Salary levels are highly related to profession, but unrelated to graduates’ ratings of quality of curriculum or teaching methods. Overall satisfaction with the university experience is not linked to job satisfaction. Job satisfaction, on the other hand, is highly influenced by salary and secondarily by instructional practices and perceived work relevance of the degree program. Research limitations/implications This study is based on data from 3 of Chile’s 60 universities, and graduates of two programs. Most employment in the two professions is regulated by labor agreements. Generalizability of results is limited. Graduates may not have been employed enough to demonstrate their capacities. Practical implications The findings offer more evidence that prestige ratings are an unreliable indicator of the quality of formation offered by universities. If the government seeks to reduce income inequality, public subsidies of higher education should be based on program quality rather than on institutional prestige. Originality/value The findings are directly relevant to the current debate in Chile about what might and what might not help to reduce severe economic inequality.

French Canadian poet William Chapman is generally dismissed as second-rate imitator of Lamartine, Hugo or his compatriot Louis Fréchette. Chapman's bitter feud with Fréchette has been – much more than the five collections of verse he published between 1876 and 1912 – his claim to fame. Despite being at odds with his North American contemporaries, Chapman was indefatigable in his pursuit of literary prestige. Chapman's quest for literary honours including the Nobel Prize, while it has thus far attracted the derision of critics, in fact provides context for a deeper understanding of his poetic practice within the shifting philanthropic landscape of the turn of the century. Close readings of two of Chapman's poems, ‘À M. Andrew Carnegie’ and ‘Nobel’, alongside contemporary journalistic sources, point to a new understanding of Chapman's considerable body of occasional verse and of Chapman himself as a savvy professional attuned to the developing ‘economy of prestige’.

Despite decades of research indicating that employed women in the United States have fewer children than other women, it remains unclear what it is about work, beyond work hours, that constrains fertility. The current study links a sample of 1,800 women of childbearing age who are employed at least part-time from the National Survey of Fertility Barriers with the Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network to examine how characteristics of women’s jobs are associated with their fertility intentions and behaviors. Results indicate that women who work in more professional jobs (e.g., occupations with greater prestige, autonomy, complexity, and supervisory characteristics) are more likely to postpone childbearing than women employed in jobs with lower scores on professional characteristics. Women in more professional jobs do not want fewer children, however, and they report higher intentions to give birth. These findings suggest that women in more professional jobs face greater barriers to having children that they want to have.
