Resumen
The Centre for Schooling and Learning Technologies (CSaLT) at Edith Cowan University (ECU) was asked in 2016 to be the Western Australian arm of a national e-exam project. This project used a bespoke exam system installed on a USB-drive to deliver what would have been traditional paper-based exams in an enclosed computer-based environment that was isolated from the internet and any resources other than those provided by the lecturer. This paper looks at the two exams chosen by the Western Australian group for the trial; a programming exam for pre-service computing teachers and an occupational health and safety exam for pre-service design and technology teachers. Both groups were drawn from the Graduate Diploma in Education course at ECU. The paper looks at the nature of the exam environment and the procedure for creating e-exams. It also outlines the exam procedures used and examines the feedback provided by both the lecturers and students involved. Conclusions are drawn about the suitability of the e-exam system and improvements are recommended as well as a discussion about e-exams and digital assessment more generally.

Resumen
The final semester examination is a routine agenda for each semester for the Program Studi Sistem Informasi Universitas Nusantara PGRI Kediri. In the implementation of the final semester exams, some of the supporting documents are the exam schedule, minutes of the exam and the list of attendees of the exam. In the minutes of the exam and the attendance list, some entries must be written by the supervisor. Some of the fields include data on day, date, exam time, exam room, course name, lecturer, class and supervisor's name. Each of these documents is made in 2 copies, so that the filling process can take up the time of the supervisor when carrying out supervisory duties. When examined, some of the entries are actually already in the exam schedule, just how to make the data contained in the schedule can be integrated to complete the fields. This problem exists because there is no system or database that is the basis for making these documents. This study aims to provide a solution by building an information system that helps produce final semester exam support documents, such as exam schedules, minutes of the exam and attendance list of participants, using the PHP programming language and MySQL database support so that the process of making these documents is done systematic and automatic system. The results of the study indicate that with the Information System Supporting the Semeste Final Examination Document, the making of documents can be done in an integrated manner, so that some of the entries no longer need to be handwritten anymore. In the end, the documents produced by the system can save writing time faster.

Resumen
А set of functional upgrades to the existing e-learning ecosystem for the C++ programming language, which provides a solution where students can use their own computers during training and practical exams, is presented in this article. The ICT solutions applied in this case offer a supervised and protected the online environment, where each student has their own working account. The rights and privileges for accessing and using various software services are customised according to the educational tasks (training or exam). Depending on the purpose, the described software solutions are realised as web services for education and training and network services for collection and evaluation of the students’ solutions during the practical exam. During the training, web services are used, and each account has its own folder, in which the solutions are stored, and if necessary, those can be opened, modified, tested and shared for collaboration or evaluation in an integrated C++ compiler. During practical exams, network services installed on Raspberry Pi are used, and for security reasons, there is no online access. Ready student solutions according to defined test cases are placed on the server. The principle of evaluation consists in comparing the solutions of each student separately with the pre-designed solutions set in the system for the same test cases. The e-learning ecosystem is developed and upgraded by managing various ICT open source solutions described in this work. Keywords: E-learning ecosystem, C++ programming, Raspberry Pi.

Resumen
In this article, we report the results of the impact of prior programming knowledge (PPK) on lecture attendance (LA) and on subsequent final programming exam performance in a university level introductory programming course. This study used Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, multiple regression, Kruskal–Wallis, and Bonferroni correction statistical techniques via SPSS software to analyze the student data for academic years 2012, 2013, and 2014 to test the hypotheses. Only LA, PPK, and final exam (FE) scores were considered for this analysis. Research suggests that PPK influences student LA and FE performance. Similar analysis was conducted on the impact of LA on FE results regardless of students’ PPK levels. The results delivered mixed conclusions. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient results indicated that LA and FE were negatively correlated. However, the coefficient value was not sufficiently statistically significant to conclude that LA does not have an impact on FE results. On the other hand, the results of average LA on student FE results, with linear regression results, revealed that nonattendance of lectures had no effect on student performance in the FE. The multiple regression results of our study identified that, PPK in a regression model, is a good fit of the data, but LA in a regression model is not a good fit of the data.

Iqbal Malik, Sohail y Jo Coldwell-Neilson. "Comparison of Traditional and ADRI Based Teaching Approaches in an Introductory Programming Course". Journal of Information Technology Education: Research 16 (2017): 267–83. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/3793.

Texto completo
Resumen
Aim/Purpose: This study introduced a new teaching and learning approach based on an ADRI (Approach, Deployment, Result, Improvement) model in an introductory programming (IP) course. The effectiveness of the new teaching and learning process was determined by collecting feedback from the IP instructors and by analyzing the final exam grades of the course. Background: Learning to program is considered a difficult and challenging task for a considerable number of novice programmers. As a result, high failure and dropout rates are often reported in IP courses. Different studies have been conducted to investigate the issue. One of the reasons for this challenge is the multiple skills that students have to master in order to be able to build programs. These skills include programming knowledge and problem-solving strategies and being able to pay equal attention to these required skills in the IP course. Methodology: A focus group was conducted to obtain feedback from the IP instructors about the ADRI approach. The performance of the students who had completed the IP course before ADRI was compared with those who used the ADRI approach by undertaking a comparative analysis of their final exam grades. Contribution: The study demonstrates that the new teaching and learning approach based on the ADRI model encourages students to pay equal attention to programming knowledge and problem-solving strategies, discouraging programming shortcuts and reducing high attrition rates (failure and dropout) in the IP course. Findings: The results of the focus group show that the instructors preferred the ADRI approach compared to the traditional approach. The final exam grades show that the students performed better in semesters which offered the ADRI approach as compared to those semesters without this approach. Future Research: Future research will explore the ADRI approach in other fields of computer science studies, such as database and data structure, to determine if its impact has a wider application than just teaching introductory programming.

Hispanic students participate in advanced programming at a much lower rate than their White peers. Although Advanced Placement (AP) can have a positive impact on future academic success and attainment of long-term goals, limited research has investigated factors that contribute to AP success for gifted Hispanic students. This study examined factors potentially predictive of success on AP exams for gifted Hispanic students. Contrary to prior literature, findings revealed that race/ethnicity was not a factor that significantly affected AP success for these gifted students. In addition, when examining the performance of all the Hispanic AP students, the only factor that significantly contributed to passing an AP exam was identification as gifted. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Resumen
Grey relational analysis (GRA) is a part of the Grey system theory (GST). It is appropriate for solving problems with complicated interrelationships between multiple factors/parameters and variables. It solves multiple-criteria decision-making problems by combining the entire range of performance attribute values being considered for every alternative into one single value. Thus, the main problem is reduced to a single-objective decision-making problem. In this study, we developed a decision support system for the evaluation of written exams with the help of GRA using contextual text mining techniques. The answers obtained from the written exam with the participation of 50 students in a computer laboratory and the answer key prepared by the instructor constituted the data set of the study. A symmetrical perspective allows us to perform relational analysis between the students’ answers and the instructor’s answer key in order to contribute to the measurement and evaluation. Text mining methods and GRA were applied to the data set through the decision support system employing the SQL Server database management system, C#, and Java programming languages. According to the results, we demonstrated that the exam papers are successfully ranked and graded based on the word similarities in the answer key.

Although a substantial amount of research work has been done on systems for the automatic assessment of programming assignments, most studies are focused on technical characteristics and further research is needed for examining the effect of using these systems on students’ perceptions and performance. This paper examines the effect of using an instructor-centered tool for automatically assessing programming assignments on students’ perceptions and performance in a web development course at a higher education institution. A total of three data sources were used: a survey to collect data regarding students’ perceptions, and the grades of the student assignment submissions and of a practical programming exam in order to analyze the students’ performance. The results show that the incorporation of the automated assessment tool into the course was beneficial for the students, since it allowed for increasing their motivation, improving the quality of their works, and enhancing their practical programming skills. Nonetheless, a significant percentage of students found the feedback that was generated by the tool hard to understand and of little use, and the generated grades unfair.

Resumen
Computer programming is a difficult subject for most novice programming students which leads to a high rate of dropout or failure. Flipped classrooms have been increasingly used to teach programming students to practice their programming skills in the class based on their knowledge acquired from outside the classroom. This study investigated students’ learning achievement which was measured by their performance on a coding test and an exam. We compared students’ programming test scores of the traditional classroom in semester 1 of the academic year 2016 with the flipped classroom in semester 1 in 2017. In addition, we studied students’ perception of flipped classrooms in a structured programming course. The population of this study consisted of 69 second-year students of the Information and Communication Technology programme in the Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand. The research instrument for investigating students’ perception of flipped classrooms was a questionnaire. Students were positive in their perception of flipped classrooms and agreed that in-class activities improved their understanding of concepts. Moreover, students in the flipped classroom environment had a significantly higher test score compared to students in a traditional lecture class.

Resumen
Computer basic teaching is an essential basic learning content in higher education teaching. In order to encourage students and enable them to practice and improve their programming ability, the online judge system has been introduced into the programming course for compiling, executing and evaluating the algorithm source code submitted by students. The asymmetry of students’ programming level is an important issue when teachers guide the programming of online judge system. We used the exploratory factor analysis method to identify the potential variable structure from the log data submitted by the students of the online judge system, and evaluate the programming level of the students to predict the “at risk” learners. We proposed a student participation model, SCFH, based on this variable structure. Using the log data of the students in the C language course and their final exam results, we trained a deep neural network based on SCFH to divide the students into three different grades, namely “risky”, “intermediate” and “advanced”. To verify the validity of the model, we used the prediction model to classify students in another C++ language programming course. The results show that the submission log data model SCFH can be used to predict the programming ability of students, and the validity of these results can be tested by examination results.

Resumen
Pair programming (PP) has become popular in the research and software industry as well as being studied for a number of years in computer science courses with positive findings on student performance and attitudes. Advantages of PP reported in the literature are satisfaction, design quality, code productivity, team building, and communication. More recently, distributed pair programming (DPP), which enables two programmers to work remotely, has also attracted the interest of researchers and instructors. The difference between DPP and PP is that the former allows geographically distributed teams to collaborate and share program code. Such collaboration is, thus, only feasible if an underlying infrastructure supports all necessary interactions. The integrated development environments (IDEs) for DPP should cover the basic requirements for remote software development as well as address common PP problems, such as unequal contributions from each member of a pair, feedback during DPP sessions, and communication problems. This paper presents the findings of a study on student performance and attitudes towards DPP in an object-oriented programming (OOP) course. The factors examined were student performance, in terms of assignment grade, exam grade and implementation time in relation to students’ programming experience, and confidence, as well as student attitudes towards DPP, i.e., the feelgood factor, working alone or with a partner, and the perception of their partner’s technical competence. The results suggest that a students’ performance is associated with their programming experience and confidence in programming but not with how comfortable they feel during DPP sessions. Students evaluate the DPP sessions positively regardless of their confidence on programming or their perception of their partners’ technical competence. Students who consider themselves to have about the same programming competence as their partners tend to be more satisfied with DPP sessions. Overall, students prefer working with a partner regardless of their confidence on programming.

Mokant programavimo jau seniai taikomas automatinis vertinimas. Comparative Analysis of Automatic Students’ Program Evaluation SystemsBronius Skūpas SummaryPractice in programming is typical for graduators of secondary schools and for programming courses in universities. Goal: This study aims at solving a location problem of Medical Specialties Centers (MSCs) and medical care equipment allocation. Addressing both problems simultaneously is an opportunity to improve public health service quality in the long-term since the literature traditionally treats these problems separately. Design / Methodology / Approach: The challenge consists in maximizing demand satisfaction with the minimum resource allocation in the public health care reality, where there is limited resource availability and high demand for medical services. For that, it was developed an integrated mathematical model, throughout mixed linear programming. The problem is a case study applied to the secondary public health care level in a Brazilian state. The method is generic and suitable to set the location and allocate resources in health care if the decision maker’s intention is to maximize the use of specialists’ assistance and medical exams. Results: The results reveal possible improvements in accessibility. Among the insights, the state government should hire 4% more specialists and acquire 1.5% more equipment to assist 99% of population demand for health care service on the secondary level. Limitation of the investigation: Usually, one appointment can result in more than one medical exam referral. However, this study considers that each specialist meeting refers to only one exam per consultation. Practical implications: This study contributes to healthcare planning, suggesting a better distribution and allocation of facilities, equipment, and professionals. Moreover, the study proposes accessibility improvements to health unit centers. Originality / Value: The main contribution of this work is the new integrated approach to public health care planning. The system proposes the reduction of access inequality and the improvement of the quality of health care services.

Resumen
High failure and dropout rates are reported in introductory programming (IP) courses in different studies despite extensive research attempting to address the issue. In this study, we introduced an ADRI (Approach, Deployment, Result, Improvement) approach in the teaching and learning process of an IP course to improve learning and success rates. All three entities of the didactic triangle (student, instructor, and content) were involved in the research to better understand and execute the proposed approach. The IP course materials were redesigned based on the ADRI approach, and an editor was developed to promote the new approach and encourage students to complete the various stages required in the approach. Two surveys were conducted, and final exam grades over four semesters were compared with determine the impact of including the ADRI approach in the course. We concluded that the ADRI approach provides a positive impact on outcomes that the students achieved during the course. It engages students in practicing their programming skills and provides a new presentation style for examples and exercises which discourages students from taking programming shortcuts. It not only helps to reduce the failure and, significantly, the dropout rates from the IP course but also impacts positively on all students who passed the IP course.

To reduce attrition in an entry-level programming class, students who performed poorly on the first exam were matched with interested alumni. All alumni were located in cities other than the university and could only communicate with their mentorees by e-mail, mail, phone, or some other means. In general, no guidance was given to the mentors, but they were told that they could give any advice on programs or course material. The program produced a significant reduction in both overall course attrition and also for the at-risk students. Such results can have a positive impact on both students and an academic program.

Resumen
Background Assessing a software engineer’s ability to solve algorithmic programming tasks has been an essential part of technical interviews at some of the most successful technology companies for several years now. We do not know to what extent individual characteristics, such as personality or programming experience, predict the performance in such tasks. Decision makers’ unawareness of possible predictor variables has the potential to bias hiring decisions which can result in expensive false negatives as well as in the unintended exclusion of software engineers with actually desirable characteristics. Methods We conducted an exploratory quantitative study with 32 software engineering students to develop an empirical theory on which individual characteristics predict the performance in solving coding challenges. We developed our theory based on an established taxonomy framework by Gregor (2006). Results Our findings show that the better coding challenge solvers also have better exam grades and more programming experience. Furthermore, conscientious as well as sad software engineers performed worse in our study. We make the theory available in this paper for empirical testing. Discussion The theory raises awareness to the influence of individual characteristics on the outcome of technical interviews. Should the theory find empirical support in future studies, hiring costs could be reduced by selecting appropriate criteria for preselecting candidates for on-site interviews and potential bias in hiring decisions could be reduced by taking suitable measures.

Resumen
This research aims to explore the effectiveness of learning Java programming language using online-based learning compared to traditional-based learning towards undergraduate students in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Similar types of learning materials in the form of slides, notes and books are used with additional forms of assessments to substitute the final exam. The main difference is in the learning approaches which have been switched to online based via various platforms depending on the suitability and preference of the students. This research focuses on identifying and analyzing certain aspects from the students’ perceptions, which are the students’ (1) learning preference; (2) learning engagement; (3) learning assessment, and in terms of their overall (4) satisfaction towards the learning process. This research uses a quantitative approach through the questionnaire as the survey instrument, involving 31 students. The data is analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage frequency distribution, mean, and standard deviation). Findings show that despite using online-based learning, 48.39% obtained marks above 80% in Lab Test 2, which is doubled compared to the previous test, Lab Test 1, 25.81%. This indicates that while students prefer traditional-based learning, they are able to perform better through online-based learning.

Resumen
The COVID-19 pandemic imposed in many countries, in the short term, the interruption of face-to-face teaching activities and, in the medium term, the existence of a ‘new normal’, in which teaching methods should be able to switch from face-to-face to remote overnight. However, this flexibility can pose a great difficulty, especially in the assessment of practical courses with a high student–teacher ratio, in which the assessment tools or methods used in face-to-face learning are not ready to be adopted within a fully online environment. This article presents a case study describing the transformation of the assessment method of a programming course in higher education to a fully online format during the COVID-19 pandemic, by means of an automated student-centered assessment tool. To evaluate the new assessment method, we studied students’ interactions with the tool, as well as students’ perceptions, which were measured with two different surveys: one for the programming assignments and one for the final exam. The results show that the students’ perceptions of the assessment tool were highly positive: if using the tool had been optional, the majority of them would have chosen to use it without a doubt, and they would like other courses to involve a tool like the one presented in this article. A discussion about the use of this tool in subsequent years in the same and related courses is also presented, analyzing the sustainability of this new assessment method.

Resumen
Despite the increasing attention devoted to the study and analysis of longitudinal data, relatively little consideration has been directed toward understanding the issues of reliability and measurement error. Perhaps one reason for this neglect has been that traditional methods of estimation (e.g. generalisability theory) require assumptions that are often not tenable in longitudinal designs. This paper first examines applications of generalisability theory to the estimation of m easurement error and reliability in longitudinal research, and notes how factors such as missing data, correlated errors, and true score instability prohibit traditional variance com ponent estimation. Next, we discuss how estimation methods using restricted maximum likelihood can account for these factors, thereby providing m any advantages over traditional estimation methods. Finally, we provide a substantive exam ple illustrating these advantages, and include brief discussions of programming and software considerations.

Resumen
Background: In universities, the course of Java programming is widely offered. It contains many contents and is practical. Therefore, learning Java programming is considered to be a difficult and challenging task for beginners. That is to say, students must learn a lot of programming skills in order to effectively master the course. However, it is often reported that the result of teaching Java programming is poor, mainly reflected in the stereotyped teaching methods, lack of project development experience and so on. In order to investigate and solve these problems, many educational experts have conducted in-depth research about it. CDIO (Conceiving-Designing-Implementing-Operating) engineering education model is the latest achievement of engineering education reform in recent years. It is a life cycle from product development to product operation as the carrier, which enables students to learn engineering in an active, practical and comprehensive way. For the problems in Java programming course, the concept of CDIO engineering is introduced to solve them. Methods: Firstly, the research status of Java programming course and the application of CDIO model were analysed. Secondly, the current situation of learning was analysed by means of questionnaire survey. At the same time, the main problems existing in the current teaching project were listed. Following this, the questionnaire method was used to analyse the current learning situation of Java programming course. The ideas of CDIO engineering education and iteration mode were applied to Java programming course. From various perspectives, this paper makes a detailed analysis of the development methods and strategies of the new teaching mode. Finally, the teaching model was applied to the existing teaching process. The teaching effect of the model was verified by data statistics. Results: The experimental results show that the new teaching mode encouraged students to master programming knowledge as well as problem-solving strategies. Students' interest in learning has been increased and their comprehensive ability has also been improved. Compared with traditional teaching methods, teachers tend to adopt CDIO teaching methods. The data statistics of teaching effect include six aspects: learning initiative, learning interest, knowledge-related ability, communication ability and practical ability, practical skills and final examination scores. The final exam results also showed that students with the new method performed better than those being taught with the older teaching method. Conclusion: A new teaching model based on graded iteration and CDIO Engineering education mode is proposed for the problems existing in the teaching process of Java programming course. This paper creatively combines CDIO engineering ideas with Java programming course, and introduces the idea of hierarchical iteration. According to this idea, the knowledge structure of the course is put forward, and the teaching method of CDIO is adopted to attract students to study Java programming. The basic characteristics of the teaching mode are that the project is taken as the main line, the teacher as the leading role, and the students as the main body, so as to cultivate the students' comprehensive engineering ability. By strengthening the classroom teaching and practice teaching, the new model improves the Java teaching process, and enhances the teaching effect. The teaching practice proves that the new teaching model can mobilize the enthusiasm of students and improve the students' practical ability. It is worthy of popularizing.

Resumen
Multivariate classification models play an increasingly important role in human factors research. In the past, these models have been based primarily on discriminant analysis and logistic regression. Models developed from machine learning research offer the human factors professional a viable alternative to these traditional statistical classification methods. To illustrate this point, two machine learning approaches - genetic programming and decision tree induction - were used to construct classification models designed to predict whether or not a student truck driver would pass his or her commercial driver license (CDL) examination. The models were developed and validated using the curriculum scores and CDL exam performances of 37 student truck drivers who had completed a 320-hr driver training course. Results indicated that the machine learning classification models were superior to discriminant analysis and logistic regression in terms of predictive accuracy. Actual or potential applications of this research include the creation of models that more accurately predict human performance outcomes.
