Resumen
This chapter argues for a changed concept of the relationship between the human and the natural. It mobilizes contemporary work in the fields of theoretical biology and post-anthropological, post-dialectical perspectives drawn from Spinoza. We get a very different picture of Romantic poetry when we read it in light of the efforts of today’s radical thinkers to reconceive both the practical and categorical relations between culture and nature, the human and the non-human, the biological and the mechanical. This project is to be distinguished from the ecological critiques of industrial and post-industrial capitalism that develop from a conservative humanist position—for example, from that of Jonathan Bate, who advocates a renewed reverential stewardship of the environment, in that way reviving the protectionist, primitivist, essentializing views of nature that arose in the early nineteenth century.

Resumen
This chapter examines the project to certify sustainable forestry in Indonesia. Although the field of forest certification was created in large part to counteract deforestation in Southeast Asia, the growth of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification in Indonesia proved to be quite slow and contentious. Companies that did get certified often struggled to reform destructive logging practices and tense relationships with communities. This chapter asks why forest certification was underdeveloped and what kinds of reforms it brought about. Drawing on interviews with practitioners and documentary evidence, the chapter shows how certification was impeded not only by convoluted market linkages but also by democratization and domestic governance of land. As indigenous communities pressed their claims to customary land rights, companies seeking FSC certification struck new bargains, but most often these amounted to shallow solutions to deep problems.

Baugh, Amanda J. Interfaith Environmentalism and Uneven Opportunities to Flourish. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190456023.003.0015.

Resumen
The chapter explores two communities—a Unitarian women’s urban garden and a green mosque—to examine motivations and effects of both “mainstream” and “alternative” environmental practices. Both the gardening group and the members of the ecofriendly mosque enacted religious environmental projects through partnerships with a Chicago-based interfaith environmental nonprofit. As the groups combined principles of environmental stewardship and justice, along with interfaith cooperation, these projects seem to represent interfaith environmentalism at its best. But the chapter calls readers to acknowledge that discussions of human and earth flourishing must recognize the diversity among humans. Not all humans are accorded equal opportunities to flourish.

Resumen
"This book reviews the spectrum of death, from when the living person turns to corpse until the person lives in the memory of mourners, and its impact on the ecology of the socio-cultural community and physical environment. This book demonstrates that American society today is in a pivotal period for re-imaging end-of-life care, funerary services, human disposition methods, memorializing, and mourning. The editors and contributors outline the past, present, and future of death care rituals, pointing to promising new practices and innovative projects that show how we can better integrate the dying and dead with the living and create positive change that supports sustainable stewardship of our environment. Individual chapters describe prevailing practices and issues in different settings where people die and in postmortem rituals; disposition and current ecologically and, in urban areas, spatially unsustainable methods; law of human remains; customs and trends among key stakeholders, such as cemeteries and funeral directors; and relevant technological advances. The book culminates in a presentation of emerging sustainable disposition technologies and innovative designs for proposed public memorial projects that respond to shifting values, beliefs, and priorities among an increasingly diverse population."
