Pineapple heart rot disease (PHRD) caused by Phytophthora spp. is one of the most important diseases of pineapple. This disease is characterized by soft rot and water-soaked lesions. Treatments were 2 rows 10 ft long, with 36-inch spacing between rows and 16-inch spacing within rows. Each treatment was randomized in complete blocks with 4 replications. Foliar sprays were applied 20 Feb, 27 Feb, and 4 Mar, using a CO2 powered hand-sprayer delivering 50 gal of water/acre at 35 psi. Diets of the Antillean ghost-faced bat (Mormoops blainvillei) and sooty mustached bat (Pteronotus quadridens) on Puerto Rico were determined via PCR, and resulting sequences of DNA were compared with those in the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD). Studies were conducted in the 1950s to evaluate the degree and spatial extent of soil salinity and sodicity in the Lajas Valley in southwestern Puerto Rico. Problem areas were identified and most of these were remediated with the establishment of irrigation and drainage infrastructure, resulting in a four-fold increase in agricultural production over a 10-year period. Abstract We present the first bird inventory conducted in Finca Nolla, a 42.8 ha wetland in northwestern Puerto Rico that was severely disturbed by agricultural and industrial activities throughout the 20th century. Capsicum chinense is a small aromatic pepper native to the Amazon and widely used in the Caribbean Basin. Most types of C. chinense are highly pungent, but landraces in Puerto Rico generally have little or no pungency. This “sweet chili pepper” (or ají dulce, as it is known on the Island) is an integral part of the local cuisine. Introduced psittacine birds can become highly invasive. In this study, we assessed invasions of Psittaciformes in Puerto Rico. We reviewed the literature, public databases, citizen science records, and performed in situ population surveys across the island to determine the historical and current status and distribution of psittacine species.
