Abstract Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and sedimentological outcrop analyses were combined in order to determine the reflection patterns and internal architecture of terrace deposits of the Vistula River at Kępa Zawadowska in the southern part of Warsaw (central Poland). The sedimentary analyses concerned the granulometric composition and lithofacies analysis. The 34 GPR profiles, which were obtained in two outcrops, using a Malå RAMAC/GPR system with 500-MHz and 250-MHz shielded antennas, were up to 100 m long. AbstractGround-penetrating radar data from a regular grid are used to study the internal structure and development of a 9-m high aeolian river dune in the Dutch Rhine-Meuse delta. Subsurface Tertiary to Quaternary deposits from coast of Subi Kecil Island, Natuna Distric, Riau Archipelago Province, were imaged with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). AbstractAs the transport challenges facing urban areas intensify, innovative solutions are required to address the social, economic and environmental impacts arising from overreliance on private motor vehicles. Velomobiles offer a range of advantages but do not feature on the radar screen of urban transport policy makers. This chapter explores the challenges and opportunities of increased adoption of velomobiles as an urban mobility option. A scan of existing velomobiles is used to define typical characteristics of these vehicles and place them into perspective against relevant travel options before they are assessed in the context of typical vehicle regulations and facility design guidelines. The opportunities and challenges associated with greater adoption of velomobiles in the context of urban travel are examined through the lenses of technology adoption and the sociotechnical framing of independent travel options. Shared mobility is identified as one potential way of broadening the base for velomobile adoption in urban areas.

This chapter explores the various forms of state, community, and interpersonal surveillance women experience during and after their incarceration to emphasize how women actively manage prison’s complex social world before transitioning to less intense, but still salient, forms of social scrutiny after their release. This chapter’s central argument is that rural life in remote areas offers women few opportunities to start over after their incarceration. Uniting the experiences of all five composite characters, this chapter discusses how women navigate gendered forms of rural social control and surveillance before, during, and after their time in prison. It documents the social organization of relationships among women in the prison, some of which present a chance for the women to critically examine or otherwise reconsider the competing narratives about their lives and choices. The chapter analyzes how the women’s caregiving obligations, particularly to their minor children, are both a source of motivation for making significant life changes and generators of financial and psychological stress prior to and after their incarceration. And it documents the parole and other stipulations the women confront following their release into the community and the special set of challenges facing women who have had multiple prison stays.

This chapter evaluates four themes: Avery Dulles's theological legacy, contemporary ecclesiology, global migration, and Asian Christianities. It explores how these four issues impact each other. At first glance, they seem to be remote from each other, especially given the fact that global migration and Asian Christianity were barely on Dulles's theological radar. However, in spite — perhaps because — of this lack of prima facie connections among these four themes, bringing them together may yield novel and surprising insights into ways to meet some of the challenges facing the Church today. The chapter begins with a brief summary of the key elements of Dulles's model ecclesiology. It then discusses how mass migrations have constituted the American Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole. Finally, the chapter outlines a model of the Church as the People of God on the Move, as a Migrant Church, as a Church of, by, and for migrants, and proposes it as a complement to Dullesian models of the Church.

Changing the trajectory of Black male students may not yet be a national conversation, but it's on the national radar screen. The success of Black males has increasingly become a topic of research, dialogue, debate, and strategic planning. As we engage in the conversation, however, talking with Black male students is a reminder that we're educating kids, not statistics, and that, as one Black student affirms, “The truth doesn't live in numbers. It lives in the person.” The challenges facing Black males throughout the educational pipeline have been discussed by researchers in detail. However, missing from this research are discussions from the perspective of researchers, educators, and community members united on how to better support Black males. This case study examines the field placement partnership between Perimeter College and Project Success: 100 Black Men of Atlanta. The case study documents the goals, plans, and outcomes of the three-year partnership.

Researchers interested in remote locations have developed monitoring schemes, sometimes called “Watchful Eye” monitoring, that use a time series of remotely sensed images to assess changes over time to a protected area or habitat. For instance, the European Space Agency (ESA) and UNESCO have set up repeat analyses of satellite imagery for World Heritage sites. The first area for which they developed this technique was the habitat of the critically endangered mountain gorilla (Gorilla berengei berengei) in the Virunga Mountains in Central Africa, including the Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks in Uganda, the Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the trans-boundary Volcanoes Conservation Area. The project developed detailed maps of these inaccessible zones so that protected area managers can monitor the gorilla habitat. Previously, available maps were old and inaccurate (at times handmade), did not completely cover the range of the gorillas, and did not cross national boundaries. Because there was no systematic information from the ground regarding changes over time, researchers also used remotely sensed data to complete change detection analyses over the past two decades. Using both optical (Landsat series) and radar (ENVISAT ASAR) satellite data, researchers were able to quantify rates of deforestation between 1990 and 2003 and relate these rates to human migration rates into the area resulting from regional political instability. Researchers constructed the first digital base maps of the areas, digital elevation models (DEMs), and updated vegetation and land use maps. They faced significant problems in both field and laboratory activities, including lack of existing ground data, dense vegetation cover, and fairly continuous cloud cover. They therefore used a combination of ESA ENVISAT ASAR as well as Landsat and ESA Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) optical data. The radar images allowed them to quantify elevation and distances between trees and homes. Landsat and MERIS data helped identify forest cover types, with Landsat providing finer-scale images at less frequent intervals and MERIS serving lower-resolution images more frequently.

This is a very different book from the one I began writing four years ago. That happens sometimes, usually when an author doesn't really understand a subject or when he discovers something else more interesting along the way, and in my case it was both. Allow me to explain. In 1991 the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation provided grants to some two dozen writers to create a series of books on technology. Because technology has shaped the modern world so profoundly, Sloan wanted to give the general, nontechnical reader some place to go in order to learn about the invention of television or the history of X-rays or the development of birth control pills. This would be it. Sloan asked that each book in the series focus on one particular technology and that all of the books be accessible to readers with no background in science or engineering, but otherwise the foundation left it up to the writers to decide what to write about and how. Various authors agreed to produce books on vaccines, modern agriculture, radar, fiber optics, the transistor, the computer, software, biotechnology, commercial aviation, the railroads, and other modern technologies. I took on nuclear power. At the time, I planned to produce a straightforward treatment of the commercial nuclear industry—its history, its problems, and its potential for the future. I knew that nuclear power was controversial, and I believed that both sides in the debate over its use were shading the truth somehow. My job would be to delve into the technical details, figure out what was really going on, and report back to the readers. To keep the book as lively and readable as possible, I would sprinkle anecdotes and colorful characters throughout, but the book's heart would be a clear, accurate account of the engineering practices and scientific facts that underlie nuclear technology. Given this information, readers could then form their own opinions on the nuclear conundrum. There was nothing original about this approach.

Abstract High porosity-high permeability stromatoporoid/coral facies are important components of the Late Jurassic carbonate reservoirs in the Middle East. This facies exhibits sub-seismic depositional heterogeneities that subsurface models often overlook due to the limited interwell resolution of subsurface data. In this research work, we develop a drowsy driver detection system through the application of visual and radar sensors combined with machine learning. The system concept was derived from the desire to achieve a high level of driver safety through the prevention of potentially fatal accidents involving drowsy drivers.
