Resumen
In recent years, game theory has emerged as a promising approach to solving the power control problem in wireless networks. This thesis extends the reach of game-theoretic analysis to embrace link adaptation, thereby constituting a generalization of the power control problem. A realistic and natural problem formulation is attempted, wherein transmitter power and a discrete-valued Adaptable Link Parameter (ALP), e.g. code rate, constitute the action set of a player in this game. The dual goals of maximizing throughput and minimizing power consumption are reflected in the utility function selection, which uses the accurate sigmoid model for approximating throughput. The discrete action space makes it difficult to verify the existence of a Nash Equilibrium (NE) in this game using standard techniques. To circumvent this limitation, a heuristic algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is analytically shown to always converge to a NE. The subsequent results probe its validity and sensitivity. Favorable comparisons are drawn between these game-theoretic results and those arising from parallel systems techniques. A linear programming system optimization that exploits properties of the dominant eigenvalue of the system gain matrix is also presented in a comparative context.

Resumen
In recent years, Software Defined and Cognitive Radios (SDRs and CRs) have become popular topics of research. Game theory has proven to be a useful set of tools for analyzing wireless networks, including Cognitive Networks (CNs). This thesis provides a game theoretic cross-layer mechanism that can be used to control SDRs and CRs. We have constructed an upper-layer Topology Control (TC) game, which decides which links each node uses. A TDMA algorithm which we have adapted is then run on these links. The links and the TDMA schedule are then passed to a lower-layer game, the Link Adaptation Game (LAG), where nodes adjust their transmit power and their link parameters, which in this case are modulation scheme and channel coding rate. It is shown that both the TC game and the LAG converge to a Nash Equilibrium (NE). It is also shown that the solution for the TC game approximates the topology that results from maximizing the utility function when appropriate link costs are used. Also seen is the increase in throughput provided by the LAG when compared to the results of Greedy Rate Packing (GRP).

Resumen

The traditional way of increasing capacity in a wirelesscommunication system has been cell splitting and fixedchannel-allocation based on prediction tools. However, theplanning complexity increases rapidly with the number of cellsand the method is not suitable for the large temporal andspatial traffic variations expected in the future. A lot ofresearch has therefore been performed regarding adaptivechannel allocation, where a channel can be used anywhere aslong as the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is acceptable. Acommon opinion is that these solutions must be decentralizedsince a centralized one would be overly complex.

In this thesis, we study the locally centralizedbunch conceptfor radio resource management (RRM) in aManhattan environment and show that it can give a very highcapacity both for outdoor users and for indoor users covered byoutdoor base stations. We show how measurement limitations anderrors affect the performance and wepropose methods to handlethese problems, e.g. averaging of measured values, robustchannel selection algorithms, and increased SIR margins. Wealso study the computational and signaling complexities andshow that they can be reduced by splitting large bunches, usingsparse matrix calculations, and by using a simplified admissionalgorithm. However, a reduction of the complexity often means areduction of the system capacity.

The measurements needed for RRM can also be used to find amobile terminal's geographical position. We propose and studysome simple yet accurate methods for this purpose. We alsostudy if position information can enhance RRM as is oftensuggested in the literature. In the studied scenario, thisinformation seems to be of limited use. One possible use is toestimate the mobile user's speed, to assist handover decisions.Another use is to find the location of user hotspots in anarea, which is beneficial for system planning.

Our results show that the bunch concept is a promisingcandidate for radio resource management in future wirelesssystems. We believe that the complexity is manageable and themain price we have to pay for high capacity is frequentreallocation of connections.

Resumen

To develop and maintain a modern combat aircraft it is important to have simple, yet accurate, threat models to support early stages of functional development. Therefore this thesis develops and evaluates a model of an active radio frequency (RF) seeker for a missile with data-link capability. The highly parametrized MATLAB-model consists of a pulse level radar model, a tracker using either interacting multiple models (IMM) or particle filters, and a guidance law.

Monte Carlo simulations with the missile model indicate that, under the given conditions, the missile performs well (hit rate>99%) with both filter types, and the model is relatively insensitive to lost data-link transmissions. It is therefore under normal conditions not worthwhile to use the more computer intense particle filter today, however when the data-link degrades the particle filter performs considerably better than the IMM filter. Analysis also indicate that the measurements generated by the radar model are neither independent, white nor Gaussian. This contradicts the assumptions made in this, and many other radar applications. However, the performance of the model suggests that the assumptions are acceptable approximations of actual conditions, but further studies within this are recommended to verify this.

Resumen
A drastic increase in traffic of mobile broadband is seen in the past few years, which is further accelerated by the increase in usage of smart phones and its applications. The availability of good smart phones and better data connectivity are encouraging mobile users to use video services. This huge increase in usage will pose a lot of challenges to the wireless networks. The wireless network has to become content aware in order to offer enhanced quality of video service through efficient utilization of the wireless spectrum. This thesis focuses on improving the Quality of Experience (QoE) for video transmission over Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks by imparting the content awareness to the system and providing unequal error protection for critical video packets. Two different schemes for the improvement of video quality delivery over LTE networks are presented in this thesis. Using content awareness, the retransmission count of Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) are changed dynamically such that the most important video frame gets more number of retransmission attempts, which increases its success for delivery in-turn increasing the received video quality. Since Radio Link Control (RLC) is the link layer for radio interface, the second approach focuses on optimizing this layer for efficient video transmission. As part of this scheme, a new operation mode called Hybrid Mode (HM) for RLC is defined. This mode performs retransmission only for the critical video frames, leaving other frames to unacknowledged transmission. The simulation results of both proposed schemes provide significant improvement in achieving good video quality without affecting the system performance.

Resumen
Positioning is recognized as an important feature of fifth generation (\abbrFiveG) cellular networks due to the massive number of commercial use cases that would benefit from access to position information. Radio based positioning has always been a challenging task in urban canyons where buildings block and reflect the radio signal, causing multipath propagation and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) signal conditions. One approach to handle NLOS is to use data-driven methods such as machine learning algorithms on beam-based data, where a training data set with positioned measurements are used to train a model that transforms measurements to position estimates.  The work is based on position and radio measurement data from a 5G testbed. The transmission point (TP) in the testbed has an antenna that have beams in both horizontal and vertical layers. The measurements are the beam reference signal received power (BRSRP) from the beams and the direction of departure (DOD) from the set of beams with the highest received signal strength (RSS). For modelling of the relation between measurements and positions, two non-linear models has been considered, these are neural network and random forest models. These non-linear models will be referred to as machine learning algorithms.  The machine learning algorithms are able to position the user equipment (UE) in NLOS regions with a horizontal positioning error of less than 10 meters in 80 percent of the test cases. The results also show that it is essential to combine information from beams from the different vertical antenna layers to be able to perform positioning with high accuracy during NLOS conditions. Further, the tests show that the data must be separated into line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS data before the training of the machine learning algorithms to achieve good positioning performance under both LOS and NLOS conditions. Therefore, a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) to classify data originating from LOS or NLOS conditions, has been developed. The probability of detection of the algorithms is about 90\% when the probability of false alarm is only 5%.  To boost the position accuracy of from the machine learning algorithms, a Kalman filter have been developed with the output from the machine learning algorithms as input. Results show that this can improve the position accuracy in NLOS scenarios significantly.

Packet-switched wireless data networks built upon IP (Internet Protocol)-based infrastructure are being envisioned to provide ubiquitous Internet access to mobile users. Supporting packet-data services along with the cellular voice services in an integrated networking framework gives rise to new network infrastructure and protocol design issues that are to be resolved to facilitate the introduction of the next generation wireless IP networks. This thesis addresses several protocol design issues in the area of wireless packet data networking, namely, retransmission control design for multichannel protocols, radio link level protocol for dynamic rate and error control, inter-layer protocol dependency, radio link-layer and transport-layer protocol fairness and radio link-level dynamic bandwidth allocation. A retransmission control policy for a multichannel S-ALOHA (slotted ALOHA) protocol in a high speed wireless data network is proposed and analyzed. A sub-optimal dynamic rate adaptation procedure is proposed for uplink data transmission in WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access)-based wireless IP networks. The performance of this scheme is analyzed using a novel ‘mean-sense’ approach for interference calculation in cellular WCDMA environment. The impact of macrodiversity packet combining on transport-protocol throughput performance is analyzed under different link-level retransmission control policies. A unified TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access)-based centralized bandwidth management mechanism is proposed as a link-level solution for providing service fairness among competing users for uplink data transmission in a wireless IP network. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) performance is evaluated under different transport-level packet scheduling policies in a correlated fading environment and a time frame-based scheduling policy is proposed to provide service fairness among mobile users in the case of downlink transmission. A set of centralized burst-level bandwidth allocation policies are investigated as a means of service integration with QoS (Quality of Service) provisioning in the wireless IP air interface.

Resumen
This chapter concludes discussion of the inter-war radio market by examining the specific strategies used by independent radio manufacturers to develop distinctive brands and thus avoid falling under the control of larger radio companies. These include innovative marketing, product differentiation through innovations in design, and strong, cooperative links with the retail trade. It also examines two alternative channels of supply for radio reception that did not require purchasing a receiver—relay services (which provided radio services from central stations by wire relays) and set rentals. Both offered the potential to extend the market to families that struggled to afford the cost of a radio set and—in the case of wire relays—to families without mains electricity. However, the expansion of these services—especially wire relays—was constrained by the determined opposition of the mainstream radio trade.

Resumen
This chapter discusses how television changed college sports. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the NCAA pursued deals worth millions of dollars with commercial, for-profit networks instead of with nonprofit, public radio and television, where the link between athletics and higher education might have been maintained and the commercialism of intercollegiate athletics restrained. The college sports establishment chose an economic playbook that promised direct benefit to athletics and to the institutions in which they operated. Televised football increased the visibility of a few privileged schools, but the bulk of money an institution derived from TV appearances went to support athletics. The schools themselves willingly complied with television policy so they could use television revenues and booster contributions inspired by TV exposure to pay for sports rather than to fund them from the educational budget. Thus, the commercial route was the one taken. While the NCAA may have exerted control over who played football on television, the networks found ways to use dollar appeal and flex their muscle to stretch television policy in their favor.

Resumen
Over the last few years, we have witnessed the emergence of many wireless systems and devices such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants, pagers, and other portable devices. However, they are often used separately, and their applications do not interact. One of the goals of personal area networks (PANs) (Bluetooth SIG, 2002a; Gavrilovska & Prasad, 2001) is to enable such a diverse set of devices to exchange information in a seamless, friendly, and efficient way. The emergence of Bluetooth (Bluetooth SIG, 2001b; Roberts, 2003) wireless technology promises such seamless networking. Bluetooth is an open industry standard that can provide short-range radio communications among small form factor mobile devices. Bluetooth is based on a high-performance, low-cost integrated radio transceiver and has been designed to provide a cable replacement technology with emphasis on robustness and low cost. Bluetooth supports two types of links: the synchronous connection-oriented (SCO) link and the asynchronous connectionless link (ACL). Figure 1 illustrates the Bluetooth protocol stack. The link manager protocol (LMP) performs link setup and configuration functions. The logical link and control adaptation (L2CAP) layer supports protocol multiplexing and connection-oriented/connectionless data services. The host controller interface (HCI) layer provides an interface to access the hardware capabilities of Bluetooth. In this article, we focus on the design and implementation of an architecture that (a) provides interoperability and connectivity of Bluetooth networks with other networks using Internet protocol (IP) technology and (b) enables Bluetooth mobile devices to wirelessly stream high-quality audio (greater bandwidth than toll quality voice) content from other Internet devices. We also investigate the efficiency of different design approaches that can be used by Bluetooth-enabled devices for high-quality audio streaming.

Resumen
Radio frequency identification (RFID) devices have matured to the point where they are now expanding beyond the retail supply chain and public transit fare management systems. RFID technology provides a low power and economical method to link remote sensors to larger control systems. In these cases, the RFID protocols provide the communication link between the sensor and larger control system. Security solutions designed for the retail and transit fare management systems are not sufficient for these new control systems. New avenues of attack are available, and attackers have different goals. Therefore, the security of these RFID protocols must be re-examined in order to identify those vulnerabilities that are not significant in the retail or fare applications, but could be exploited in these new settings. This chapter analyzes the ISO 18000-6 Type C protocol to identify potential security vulnerabilities. This protocol is one of the major RFID protocols for passive RFID systems.

Resumen
In recent years, vertical handover (VHO) has been identified as the primary vehicle to provision seamless mobility and quality of service (QoS) transparency for end-user in composite network. This allows end-user to enjoy ubiquitous connectivity in the most efficient way, irrespective of time and place, commonly known as always best connected. In this chapter, the authors introduce the notion of cognitive cooperation as a means to provide optimized VHO opportunistically in order to exploit the inherent heterogeneity that exists within such composite network to improve radio resource usage. Through the cognitive cooperation, the chapter proposes a distributed load adaptation strategy (LAS) framework which exploits the benefits of joint optimization, particularly between link adaptation and load adaptation on-demand. The authors advocate that such synergetic interactions between the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer have advantages over the PHY approach based only on link adaptation. Comprehensive performance analyses show that the LAS framework arbitrates a QoS-balanced system in which statistical QoS guarantee for multimedia traffic can be provisioned and overall system capacity can be maximized.
