Abstract. The purpose of these historical notes is to present the early history of the Jicamarca Radio Observatory (JRO), a research facility that has been conducting observations and studies of the equatorial ionosphere for more than 50 years. We have limited the scope of these notes to the period of the construction of the observatory and roughly the first decade of its operation. Abstract. In March 2014 an all-sky imager (ASI) was installed at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory (11.95∘ S, 76.87∘ W; 0.3∘ S MLAT). We present results of equatorial spread F (ESF) characteristics observed at Jicamarca and at low latitudes. Optical 6300 and 7774 Å airglow observations from the Jicamarca ASI are compared with other collocated instruments and with ASIs at El Leoncito, Argentina (31.8∘ S, 69.3∘ W; 19.8∘ S MLAT), and Villa de Leyva, Colombia (5.6∘ N, 73.52∘ W; 16.4∘ N MLAT). Abstract. In November 2004, a large and variable interplanetary electric field (IEF) was felt in the reference frame of the Earth. Abstract. For a period of a few hours, the penetration of electric fields of solar wind origin is at its highest efficiency. In November 2003, five days of continuous vertical drift data were obtained at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory. Here we have isolated a range of frequencies centered at a few-hour period for a five-day period and have explored the local time dependence of the penetration, along with the time delay due to magnetospheric effects. We find that the latter ranges from 15 to 25 min. For the local time dependence, we find that the period of anti-correlation is roughly from 21:0
