Efforts to conserve rare plant species can be limited by a lack of time and funding for monitoring. Understanding species occurrence and distribution patterns within existing protected habitat and throughout the entire species range can help stewards prioritize rare plant monitoring. We created a database of rare plant occurrences from public, private, and research sources to analyze the distribution of rare plant species throughout the existing protected area within the Nature Reserve of Orange County in California, USA. We analyzed species occurrence relative to the urban edge, roads, trails

The paper discusses co-existence of protected plant species growing in dry grasslands of the Carpathian Basin. Our approach is based on a hypothesis that the presence of a rare, protected species on a habitat can be considered as indicator for potential presence of some further rare species (having similar ecological requirements). Based on this „indicator hypothesis” we also believe that the given habitat can successfully support transplanted populations of the indicated species. So thus, this approach can be used for nature conservation operations, when species from threatened habitats need

Abstract Knowledge gaps regarding species distribution and abundance are great in remote regions with political instability, and they might be even larger concerning elusive and rare species. We predict the potential distribution for Hierophis andreanus, a poorly known endemic snake in the Iranian Plateau, and assess its conservation status in relation to existing protected areas. We used a maximum entropy modeling tool and Mahalanobis distance to produce an ensemble species distribution model. The most suitable habitats where located mainly in mountain ranges and adjacent areas of Iran and Af

Growing anthropogenic pressure and changing climate conditions create new reality in which more and more native fauna species require our attention. That is the reason for scientists to compile Red Lists or Red Data Books on different levels. The main factors of negative impact on animals nowadays are as follows: destruction and/or transformation of natural ecosystems (habitats), illegal removal from nature, commercial overuse, natural disasters and climate change, as well as military actions. The Red Data Book of Ukraine includes 140 species of animals which appear in Lviv region. However, th

The value of wetland is now widely recognized; some legislation requires "no net loss" of wetlands, although economic incentives still exist for wetland conversion. Rare plants may be protected by law; however, wetlands are rarely managed specifically to conserve rare species. Furthermore, it is not always clear how the environment should be manipulated to increase the abundance of such species, since necessary autecological details are rarely available. Species conservation involves demographic and genetic elements, as well as ethical decisions about the merits of transplanting or importing g

Rare forest plant communities include valuable areas of spruce, pine and birch forests. Among the unique and rare, we propose to include communities with Dianthus krylovianus and communities with Calluna vulgaris. The authors gave the phytocenotic characteristic of each community and the composition of rare and protected plants. These communities can be classified as rare based on a set of criteria, which includes species richness, the presence of rare species, and scientifi

Introduction. The assessment of the importance of individual areas for the conservation of European biodiversity relies on various criteria, one of which is the presence of threatened species of European significance. Recent botanical surveys have confirmed the proliferation of rare plants within the Divychky Emerald Network Area. Our research aims to conduct a phytosociological analysis and assess the ecological conditions of habitats hosting rare species in the Divychky Emerald Network Area (DENA) under protection at both national and international levels. More than 60 species of rare and endangered vascular plant species are found in forests with oak. About 20 protected species grow in secondary oak forests adjacent to cities or settlements. The article provides information about the presence of rare plants in particular areas. Rare species are quite resistant to such anthropogenic influences as early spring fires, which oak forests experience almost annually. The greatest danger to the conservation of plant biodiversity is the cutting down of secondary oak forests for the construction of linear, industrial and civil objects.

The aim of this study was to develop an effective procedure to assess the conservation status of sedges in the province. Data on 49 target Carex species were collected, validated, and consolidated from the Flora of Saskatchewan Association (FOSA) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) datasets, resulting in 277 specimen-based occurrences. Applying a novel assessment approach, target Carex species were classified as follows: Critically Endangered (CR) – six
