Texto completoCatalonia and Bavaria today cling tightly to their linguistic distinctiveness, their cultural traditions, their culinary specialties, and their political particularity. Even after the passage of some centuries, these regions have not yet amalgamated into the nation states that contain them. And yet, Bavaria’s stubborn regionalism does not translate into any real longings for secession, whereas many Catalonians struggle actively and adamantly for autonomy. Why are there strong independence movements in Spain, but not in Germany? How have state formation and the relationship between the center and the region affected independence movements? This thesis provides a historical analysis of Bavarian and Catalan regionalism and argues that autonomy mitigates secession if the predominant state has accommodated sub-state regionalism. This thesis explains that the EU can either strengthen or weaken regional governments, depending upon the nature of the relationship between the regional governments and their associated national government. This thesis argues that the security of both a newly independent state and its parent government is worse off in the short term; the severity of the security situation depends on the nature of the divorce.

This work is a study of universalism concepts and literary regionalism and its implications in the study of Novel. The novelistic narratives have often been categorized either as regionalist, or as universal. However, this classification is usually made arbitrarily, since the basis under which these concepts are applied are not consistent, which paves the way for the claim that these are used exclusively with marginalization purposes of certain literary manifestations. On this, the research seeks to establish other ways in which the local and the universal can be thought of in the novel, making use of the opportunities provided by the reflections of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur about the narrative which allow us to think the novel as having dimensions that include both private as universalizing aspects of the plot. In order to check the consistency of the analysis, the study will turn to the literary works Relato de um certo Oriente, by Milton Hatoum, Beiradão, by Alvaro Maia, and Galvez Imperador do Acre by Márcio de Souza, that, wheter they have been compiled by authors from outside the major centers, they have elements that allow align them to the general panorama of the novel, while guarding features that approximate their original context of accomplishment.
Universidade Federal do Amazonas, 2012. http://tede.ufam.edu.br/handle/tede/3138.
Texto completoThe dialectical cycles of expansion/contraction of capitalism in the Amazon during the twentieth century have left indelible marks on the cultural and social sphere. The rubber period was one of the most significant moments of this process, the economic values transacted in the apogee of rubber exploration turned Manaus and Belém in modern urban centers, equipped with infrastructure services that would come later to other Brazilian cities. The short time between the peak and decline of the rubber extraction was marked by a vigorous intellectual production, ranging from an optimistic view about the future of the region to the pessimism of the Amazon abandonment by the public power of the Union. Born in 1928, Leandro Tocantins, sought to understand the social change processes that led to the decline of the regional economy and at the same time signals a political strategy to put the region on the national political agenda. His intellectual production and political action moved gradually from the national developmentalism for the conservative modernization. In this sense, the concept of tradition and modernity in his thinking is intimately articulated to the intellectual role he played in the organization and direction of cultural, regional and national living.

This dissertation aims to demonstrate that S?o Paulo State?s urban history was surrounded, from the beginning, by the imprecision between the urban and rural environments, especially in the mogiana region, which spawned a rural urbanity apart from the administrative limits and strongly related to Minas Gerais. This way, it relativizes the civilization?s approaches, presenting shards of a road network and spread preexistent neighborhoods, deeply related to the natural landscape, structured according the way of life and imagination of their inhabitants and where ideas and goods that supplied the internal market traveled. At the same time, they worked as communication channels with areas already considered urbanized, from where came diluted influences built from the diversity of beings and ways. This culturally diverse landscape shaped a perception of the urban environment compatible to the existing rural way of life and adapted to the reality and possibilities of the rural population. Therefore, the cultural landscape was the base for the insertion of the administrative network then consolidated the modern regional territoriality. Like stacked layers, intersection and detachment moments are observed, influenced by the encounters, conflicts, dialogs, resistances and redeterminations of the landscape itself and the network. The failure in immediately complying with an external urbanizing model, makes this process peculiar, consistent with the local culture and detached from the belle ?poque concept. This regionalist urbanity kept rustic cultural aspects that justified its spatial features and the organization method of the society around communities, where the production and genealogy defined them as groups. Under this scenario, urban cores presented themselves as places of political representativeness, linking the region to the capital of S?o Paulo, while converting it in a metropolis. This administratively fragmented cultural landscape between S?o Paulo and Minas Gerais territories was kept until late 19th century and the industrialization process, that began during the 20th century, was a milestone on the frontier definitions.

Texto completoThis paper focuses on the analysis of the Latin Americas regionalism evolution, especially confronting the main features of regionalism models in the continent characterized as \"open\" and \"post-hegemonic. Both regionalisms characterize the periods of creation and development of the main economic bloc in South America, Mercosur, and determine its transformations and performance. Due to its relevance in history as well as in the transformation of the regional integration pattern, through a historical analysis, this paper studies the issues that motivated its creation, structure, importance in the region and how, over the years, has changed due to external and domestic influences of its members, which strongly influenced in specific models of integration that composed the Mercosur, called strategic, social and productive regionalisms. Thus, it aims to demonstrate that Mercosur reflects the economic, political and social changes that occurred at the end of the twentieth century, culminating in its creation and development, modifying it substantially in the first decade of the current century.

Texto completoThis research explores the liabilities and possibilities of African regionalism in an emerging international system characterized by economic globalization. The paper concerns itself with understanding the ways in which scholars are conceiving the concept of globalization, determining the ways in which the phenomenon is impacting the international system, and discerning globalization's impact on political and economic outcomes in Africa. The paper argues that globalization is driving the establishment of a global free market capitalist economic system based on competition, efficiency and productivity. This emerging international political economic order increasingly favours economies of scale and collective capacity. That is, its organizational logic is such that only those competitors who can rapidly mobilize and deploy vast resources across a range of domains will be able to compete effectively in the system. Accordingly, the wealthy areas of the globe are organizing themselves into increasingly cohesive economic and political regional groupings. Furthermore, globalization is speeding the inclusion of poorer countries into this fiercely competitive market. However, the terms of inclusion are dictated by and in favor of the wealthiest and most powerful members of the international society. Based on this reading of international life the paper argues that more pervasive cooperation and integration is ultimately Africa's only viable development strategy. African regionalism is examined in historical perspective an assessment of past initiatives, which it is now clear have largely faltered, yields the conclusion that a fundamental strategic re-orientation is required. The constitutional, 'grand-strategy' approach to integration must give way to an orientation that emphasizes more functional economic connections below the level of the state. Thus, this paper advocates the gradual and incremental enlargement of the area of cooperation across political and economic domains within and across regions on a functional basis. The establishment of an African Free Trade Area is viewed as the most effective framework for animating a functional orientation.

Abstract: In this research, we investigate four Brazilian fictional narratives that took actively for their arrangement the backland territory: Pedra Bonita (1938) and Cangaceiros (1953), by José Lins do Rego, and Deus e o diabo na terra do sol (1964) and O dragão da maldade contra o santo guerreiro (1969), by Glauber Rocha. We presuppose that the two novels and two films, even if produced in a historical gap of thirty-one years, when they elect the backland space, the narratives behave and congregate an inquietude with the direction that the peripheral modernity assumed in Brazil. Different styles of narrating that spatiality and its comprehension show the authors‟ different conceptions about the politics and aesthetics. Searching to apprehend in novels and movies, however, these private records, fix the literary and the cinematographic spaces comprehension as social space, while require the analysis about the connections between these spaces and the dynamics of Brazilian social life

Texto completoThis research has as main focus the observation of land and of people from São Paulo as being the artistic point on Guilherme de Almeida\'s literature. It comprehends poet\'s reflections about the cultural identity of people and about the city itself, based on articles from the newspaper \"O Estado de S. Paulo\", by emphasizing the difference between the cosmopolitan and the traditionalist São Paulo. For that purpose is analyzed in his literary production after the Modernism movement and its esthetical and ideological transformation as well, and the strains revealed by that change are evidenced: the cosmopolitan and the traditionalist views, the author\'s concerns in understanding the people from Brazil by defining the people from São Paulo, and the introduction of author on a Bandeirante line and the creation of the Bandeirante mith.
