Resumen
As the cinematic experience becomes subsumed into today's ubiquitous technologies of seeing, contemporary artworks lift the cinematic out of the immateriality of the film screen and separate it into its physical components within the gallery space. How to read these reformulations of the cinematic medium - and their critique of what it is and has been? In Theorizing Cinema Through Contemporary Art: Expanding Cinema, leading film theorists consider artworks that incorporate, restage, and re-present cinema's configuration of the key categories of space, experience, presence/absence, production and consumption, technology, myth, perception, event, and temporality, so interrogating the creation, appraisal, and evolution of film theory as channeled through contemporary art. This book takes film theory as a blueprint for the moving image, and juxtaposes it with artworks that render cinema as a material object. In the process, it unfolds a complex relationship between a theory and a practice that have commonly been seen as virtually incompatible, renewing our understanding of each and, more to the point, their interactions.

Resumen
This chapter examines Article 26 of the ATT which describes the treaty’s relationship with other international agreements. The article permits states parties to adopt treaties and other agreements that govern the trade in conventional arms and ammunition/munitions and parts and components (items), provided that these are consistent with the obligations set out in the ATT. In accordance with paragraph 1, adherence to any treaty or agreement relating to arms or items by an ATT state party that contravened or undermined its obligations under the ATT would amount to a violation of the ATT and implicate the international responsibility of that state. Additionally, the article stipulates that the ATT shall not be cited as grounds for voiding defence co-operation agreements concluded between states parties to the ATT.

Resumen
The concurrent and longitudinal association between intimate relationship dysfunction and depression is well established in both adolescents and adults. This association can be best understood as a bidirectional transactional one, such that intimate relationship dysfunction and depression reciprocally influence one another over time. This chapter reviews the existing research in this area, focusing on the main components and processes of intimate relationships (including how they start, function, and end) in relation to depression. Adolescent research has also focused on how romantic and sexual experiences relate to depression, which is also reviewed. Finally, couple therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral couple therapy, is discussed as an efficacious treatment for comorbidity and intimate relationship dysfunction-depression. Future directions for research are also suggested.

Resumen
Chapter 8 focuses on the development of peer and romantic relationships. The authors draw on Erikson’s theory as focused around the key period of intimacy development in emerging adulthood, and also discuss attachment theory models on this topic. They review the longitudinal research evidence on links between the three components of personality in the McAdams and Pals model and intimacy development. Turning to the evidence from our Futures Study sample, the authors analyze stories told at ages 26 and 32 about friends and about romantic partners, and how these two domains of relationships are linked with personality development. Finally, to illustrate key topics, the chapter ends with a case study on the complex and stressful romantic relationship of an iconic Canadian political couple from the 1970s, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his emerging adult-aged wife, Margaret Sinclair.

This chapter describes the 12 component tools of ARC within three stages of the ARC model. The first stage of collaboration focuses on ARC component tools for relationship, network, and leadership development. These tools establish the foundational relationships and conceptual development of leaders necessary to begin ARC’s second stage. In the participation stage, component tools such as team building, participatory decision making, and feedback (as well as others) are introduced to illustrate how ARC builds effective teams that apply ARC tools to improve services quality. Innovation represents the third stage as ARC participants employ the tools in a continuous improvement process to eliminate barriers to effective services, drive job redesign, and assure stabilization for sustainable improvement.

Resumen
This article aims to go beyond the existing scholarship on eugenics and to point out the complex intertwining of visions of racial improvement with eugenic hybrids during the twentieth century. It offers an insight into the convoluted relationship between race and eugenics. It contributes to the increasingly polarized current discussion about the eternal return of eugenics. It evaluates the degree and nature of conceptual transfers of eugenic knowledge and ideas and addresses eugenics' key components. Race is a central component in the eugenic imagination and this centrality provides an insight into a larger debate, known as the nature-nurture debate. The examples of eugenic thinking on race are provided in this article. It illustrates that the study of twentieth-century eugenics is currently undergoing a remarkable transformation and contributes in new and refreshing ways to our understanding of eugenics and race.

This chapter describes the origins of National Societies of the Red Cross or the Red Crescent before elaborating on their legal status as well as their mandates, roles, and tasks. Together with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation, National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies form the three components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. They have been endowed with a mandate by the international community which is at the same time considerably broad and distinct, entailing specific tasks, roles, rights, and obligations. The scope of their privileges and immunities is limited and largely determined by bilateral agreements between a deploying National Society/Movement component and the Receiving State. The chapter highlights the legal framework of National Societies’ international operations as well as specificities of their relationship with military bodies.

Resumen
This chapter reports the traditional violent themes in religious Judaism as they seem in sacred texts, rites, customs, and chronicles, and provides a survey of the components of Jewish religion relating to violence while evaluating and illustrating their development and influence through history. It then describes the violent implications of two religious elements that are distinct and central in the Jewish legacy: Mysticism and Messianism. The case of Jewish violence is especially complicated, since Judaism is characterized by a close relationship and a substantial overlap between religious association and ethno-nationalist ties. The essence of Judaism became the interpretation and application of the Bible to historical realities. The Kabbalah presents historical reality as a mirror and integral component of a larger cosmic drama. A distinct minority of Jews use their own victimhood as a license to inflict violence upon others by way of compensation or revenge.

This chapter shows how to develop an answer to a particular research question. It first considers the requirements and components of an answer to a research question before discussing the role of ‘theory’ in social science research, what a ‘theoretical framework’ is, and what a hypothesis is. It then explores the three components of a hypothesis: an independent variable, a dependent variable, and a proposition (a statement about the relationship between the variables). It also looks at the different types of hypotheses and how they guide various kinds of research. It also explains why conceptual and operational definitions of key terms are important and how they are formulated. Finally, it offers suggestions on how to answer normative questions.

Resumen
Preparing large ensembles for performance involves musical, social, logistical and financial challenges of a kind seldom encountered in other forms of collective music-making. The conventional approach to meeting the challenges that arise during rehearsal is to appoint a single musical overseer, usually a conductor, whose ostensible role in musical preparation is to directly influence the musicians while working towards the creation of a musical product to be delivered in later performances. Rehearsal leadership, viewed from this perspective, moves predominantly in one direction, from conductor to ensemble. But such a perspective oversimplifies the conductor’s relationship with the ensemble, the relationships between the musicians, and the strategies that the latter must employ when working in large ensembles. Conceptualizing the ensemble as a complex system of interrelated components, where leadership and creative agency are distributed and developed through rehearsal to achieve what audiences assume to be a unified whole, yields new understanding of the work of large ensembles. This chapter examines these components of the creative process in orchestral and choral rehearsal and performance, the internal and external forces shaping and constraining that process, and the approaches that individual musicians and conductors could adopt in response to the changing contexts in which such creativity might be manifested.

Churches as essential components of European culture have major significance for European integration. A Europe, bound by common constitutional traditions, cultures and traditions of its Member States, their national identity and the principle of subsidiarity, will have to respect the deep-rooted systems of State and Church relationships in its Member States. The volume presents in its third edition a broad comparison of different systems of State and Church relationships in the Member States of the European Union. It includes the new Member States and gives an account of the new developments throughout Europe. The volume shows the implications of European integration on the position of the Churches. It is of interest to all working in the field of State-Church relationship as well as to public and church institutions. The volume has been produced in association with the European Consortium for State-Church Research. The authors are experts in the field from the different Member States of the European Union, presenting the relevant systems of their home countries. The editor is a former professor at the University of Trier.

Resumen
One of the critical challenges in relationship science is translating the “science” of relationship research into the “practice” of clinical intervention. One of the major issues in this challenge is determining when something “works” or, more specifically, identifying the central criteria from which to evaluate the findings of research and determine that an intervention is ready for clinical use. This seemingly simple task is complex given that relationship science research is based on the interaction among client factors, therapeutic influence, and specific change mechanisms that lead to measurable outcomes in couple and family therapy (CFT). As a result of the complexity, determining what works can no longer be accomplished by literature reviews or meta-analyses alone. Determining what works in a clinically useful way is an important task because if clinicians are to use research it must be evaluated on components that are both methodologically sound and clinically useful. We suggest that treatment guidelines have the potential to reliably distinguish varying levels of evidence and effectively disseminate this information to practitioners, serving to close the gap between practice and research in relationship science. Thus, treatment guidelines offer a “vehicle” to move research into practice.

Chapter 6 will focus primarily on the political implications of Grotius’ theory of ‘limited’ property as they concerned the relationship between the sphere of individual rights, the social contract, and the prerogatives of civil power. From the debate on the abolition of tithes in the early 1640s to the controversy between Filmer and Locke in the 1680s, the debates on property rights revolved around how much individuals could impropriate from the commons stock and, accordingly, on the limits and prerogatives of civil power in regulating private property. Grotius’ theory of property, along with his analysis of the law of war, were also components of Dutch and English expansion overseas.

Coercive relationship dynamics are established and operate within reactive and regulatory intra- and interpersonal processes in families. These regulatory processes function within complex transactions between genetic and nongenetic processes that are transmitted from parents to children. This chapter highlights examples of gene–environment interplay in several key components of coercive family processes, with a special focus on parent and child self-regulation problems in coercive interactions. These include gene–environment correlation, gene–environment interaction, and epigenetic mechanisms that contribute to individual differences in self-regulation and dyadic regulation. These are conceptualized within a framework of ongoing parent and child effects operating within family dyads.

Couple distress is not only highly prevalent but also detrimental to individual emotional, behavioral, and physical well-being. Moreover, relationship problems can impede treatment response for a wide range of psychological disorders. Understanding couple distress requires that assessment extend beyond individual factors to include the broader relational and socioecological context. This chapter describes the multifaceted etiological considerations in couple assessment and provides brief screening measures and methods for the diagnosis of couple distress. Assessment techniques capable of evaluating behavioral, cognitive, and affective components of couple distress are highlighted. The chapter emphasizes the best practices in conceptualizing and assessing couple distress for the purpose of treatment planning and evaluation. Best practice recommendations and potential areas for future research are explicated.

This chapter discusses what makes music an activity or a discipline worthy of study and what about music is worthy of study. It shows how music, like all disciplines worthy of study, can be understood to have cognitive, psychomotor, and affective components. Understanding the hierarchies in each facet and the relationship between the various facets helps teachers understand what music should be taught and in what ways. Music was long considered a fringe subject, but in 2014 it became a core subject in the national curriculum. Leaders within the field have written standards—curriculum guidelines—to help music teachers understand what students should know and be able to do as a consequence of music study.

In this chapter, the authors address four areas particularly relevant to understanding important topics related to gun-involved violence. First, they provide a general overview of violence, setting forth commonly recognized definitions and types, psychological components and theories, and psychiatric disorders most closely associated with violence. Second, they address firearm-related violence and crime with respect to national and state-based statistics as well as relevant theories and empirical research in this domain. Third, they discuss various high-profile shootings, including an overview of some of the more infamous mass shootings in the modern-day United States, followed by theories and research relevant to mass shootings (including school shootings). The authors also focus on the relationship between mental illness and firearm-related violence.

Integrated oceans management (IOM) is an attempt to respond to the deficiencies of a zonal/sectoral, fragmented approach to oceans governance and has been widely endorsed at national, regional, and global levels. This chapter explores IOM as a concept and assesses the extent to which it has been implemented at all levels of oceans governance. It identifies the key components of IOM, their relationship to one-another, and their role in supporting an integrated approach to oceans management. It assesses the applicability of IOM — both actual and potential — to areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ). The chapter concludes with observations regarding the future development of IOM and its role in driving forward a new frontier in marine environmental protection and oceans governance more generally.

Resumen
This chapter outlines an ethics of caring by examining the philosophical basis of caring as well as components of the caring relationship in a psychiatric setting. It draws on the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, particularly his idea of the Self’s responsibility toward a vulnerable and radically different Other. It also argues that Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of ‘lines of flight’ challenges modern conceptualizations of personhood by positing a personhood based on sociality, fluidity, and multiplicity. Narrative presents a link between responsibility to the Other and respect for the Other’s personal process of becoming and thus may be used as a caring approach in psychiatry. An ethics of caring thus promotes the wellbeing of the patient by means of responsible, dynamic relationality for which narrative offers one promising expression.

Dissenters within Britain had to face a range of challenges when it came to their relationship with the state. While the Toleration Act (1689) allowed Dissenters in England willing to subscribe to the doctrinal components of the Thirty-Nine Articles and swear allegiance to the monarch freedom of worship, they, like their counterparts elsewhere, still laboured under a series of legal restrictions that rendered them second-class citizens. Attempts were made throughout the period to remove these legal restrictions and organizations, such as the London-based Dissenting Deputies, were eventually successful in repealing the Test and Corporation Acts. The length of time that this took reflects the uncertainty about how easily the state could combine a desire for order with a divergence of opinions, religious or otherwise, within it.

Resumen
This book focuses on the military and statebuilding components of the international project in Afghanistan since 2001. It posits and discusses the military-peace complex as a framework for understanding the international project in Afghanistan, pointing to the sliding together and collapse between military and peace actors, mandates, and ideational frameworks. Focusing on the role of gender as well as material and spatial entanglements, the author argues that military and peace work in the liberal mode cannot be logically separated but rather are co-constituted and operate in a dynamic relationship to each other with fluid and shifting boundaries. Based on original interviews and wider research, the book offers a holistic way of viewing the international project in Afghanistan, drawing attention to its under-noticed elements, and providing a new way of understanding its politics.
