Au début du XIXe siècle, la Louisiane est une région agricole fort prospère, qui connaît un essor spectaculaire. La population servile augmente considérablement, alors que le système esclavagiste se développe et se radicalise. La Louisiane antebellum1 est ainsi le théâtre parfait pour étudier la rencontre entre religion et esclavage. Comment les esclaves parviennent-ils à se forger une culture religieuse bien distincte de celle de leurs maîtres ? Comment cette culture apparaît-elle aux yeux des voyageurs qui atteignent la Nouvelle-Orléans au XIXe siècle ? En quoi les pratiques religieuses des esclaves des Antilles, qui arrivent en grand nombre au tournant du siècle, ont-elles influencé la religion des esclaves louisianais ? En se basant sur les récits de voyage du XIXe siècle, cet article nous permettra de partir à la découverte de la culture religieuse des esclaves de Louisiane.

Abstract. Martinique is a French island in the Lesser Antilles, with a high seismic hazard. In 2006, Martinican stakeholders involved in seismic safety formed the "Réplik" working group ("Aftershock" in French), the first of its kind in this region. This paper addresses a mid-term appraisal of the first seismic awareness campaign organised by Réplik from 2006 to 2011, and how it has modified, or not, local earthquake and tsunami preparedness. Despite efforts from Réplik to assess its efficiency through surveys, a growing gap is noted between the observed awareness and the actual preparedness of the public. As usual, gender, age, educational level, then boredom and saturation contribute to this discrepancy; strong cultural items may also influence the perception of actions. To remain efficient and respond to the public's expectations, Réplik must redirect its actions towards a cultural congruence of information: consideration of religion and local beliefs, comprehensive messages on TV and radio, use of the Creole language, participatory experiences and drills, and a little science. With this, the Réplik stakeholders can hope to increase Martinicans' involvement into the preparedness process, to cope quickly with a strong earthquake and this know-how can be shared with other seismically active islands in the Caribbean.

Summary Direct and indirect contact: how personal contact and contact through media affect attitudes towards different ethnic groupsThe composition of Dutch society has altered drastically in the last decades. This expanding diversity in terms of culture and religion was accompanied by increased tension and prejudice amongst Dutch citizens. Although we already know a lot about the potential causes of anti-immigrant prejudice among adults, we know less about the processes among Dutch young adolescents (age 16-23). Young adolescents do not fear much direct economic competition yet, and they get much of the information about other cultures through (new) media. Based on contact theory we formulate assumptions with regard to direct (personal) contact as well as indirect contact (via media). In addition, we distinguish attitudes towards Turks and Moroccans from those towards Antilleans and Surinamese. We found that positive personal contact has a strong effect in enhancing positive attitudes for both groups and that social media are able to further enhance the effect of positive contact. Online news websites play the biggest role in decreasing positive attitudes. Finally, all effects showed to be stronger for attitudes towards Turks and Moroccans than towards Antilleans and Surinamese migrants.

Entre 1810 y 1824, las Antillas españolas fueron testigos de cómo el territorio de la América continental iniciaba, maduraba y culminaba su proceso de independencia y de una España que, a partir de la invasión francesa de la península Ibérica en 1808, vivió sus dos primeras experiencias liberales. Ambos desarrollos históricos supusieron la subversión del orden que representaba la monarquía absoluta, al momento en la persona de Fernando VII, y sus consecuencias se dejaron sentir en las islas. Tras el restablecimiento del absolutismo, en Cuba surgieron voces que buscaron adaptar la actividad inquisitorial a una nueva realidad que, impuesta por acontecimientos externos, condicionó el desarrollo y la efectividad de la actuación de los ministros de la Inquisición en la isla. El presente artículo se propone rescatar un proyecto de establecer un nuevo tribunal de Inquisición en La Habana, que fue presentado como un instrumento para el control de las ideas, la defensa de la religión y contra la herejía.

Postcolonial criticism has made its way into the field of religion mostly in the disciplines of theology and biblical studies. Little has been done to approach liturgics and homiletics from a postcolonial perspective. Building on such initial approaches, this paper recovers the tradition of the Taíno religion—the pre-Columbian religion in the Antilles prior to colonial times—and borrows from it a worldview of “complementary dualities” and a ritual pattern that embraces both conflict and unity. Drawing on the tradition of the Taíno religion and building on the work of postcolonial theologians, this paper proposes a liturgical dynamic that moves the community from spaces of tension to experiences of connectedness in order to alleviate the segregation of colonized and colonizers.

Car, on ne peut aborder l’enfant sans rencontrer continuellement tout un réseau de valeurs qui en forment le tissu le plus profond, celui qui supportera ses orientations et les décisions de sa vie. Des méthodes, des approches, des perspectives différentes se découvrent dans un fécond croisement de la philologie et de la linguistique, de l’art et de la littérature, de l’histoire et de l’archéologie, comme aussi de la science politique et de l’économie, sans oublier la religion.

Brua is an Afro-Caribbean religion and healing tradition predominantly practised on the ABC islands of the former Netherlands Antilles. It is grounded in oral tradition and shrouded in strict social taboos. Existing literature suggests that the majority of people on and from the islands are familiar with Brua and that it plays a substantial role in shaping their illness conception and idioms of distress. A lack of knowledge of Brua may therefore lead biomedically trained health professionals to misdiagnose these patients. This article discusses how religious beliefs related to Brua influence the illness concepts and idioms of distress of psychiatric patients originating from the ABC Islands, based on semi-structured interviews with former islanders receiving treatment at a psychiatric institute in the Netherlands. We found that of the 29 interviewees, 93.1% knew what Brua involved, 72.4% believed in it, 48.2% had first-hand experience with Brua practices, and 34.5% attributed their mental illness to Brua with greater or lesser certainty. However, only one patient had previously discussed her belief in Brua with her psychiatrist and only when asked to do so. The role of psychoactive substances in the context of Brua practices was negligible. Thus, the present study indicates that the majority of psychiatric patients from the ABC islands are familiar with Brua, but feel reluctant to discuss their concerns in this area with mental health professionals. Recommendations for clinical practice and further research are provided, including the need for a culture-sensitive approach and integrative care.

À cette époque, alors qu’un nombre croissant de récits sont publiés ou traduits en Europe ayant pour thèmes les coutumes des peuples non évangélisés, la découverte des Amériques et de populations qui ne figurent pas dans les textes bibliques obligent les théologiens, les écrivains, les chroniqueurs et autres voyageurs, à repenser l’altérité et à formuler de nouvelles interprétations à partir des catégories existantes. Les récits d’André Thevet, de Jean de Léry, par exemple, attestent de cette révolution conceptuelle en ce sens que ces auteurs, pour la première fois, vacillent. Ils en appellent à la transformation de soi et à la conversion du regard. Cette ouverture restera toutefois de courte durée et assez marginale. Avec les conquêtes coloniales, en effet, les récits missionnaires se multiplient et s’ils se diffusent jusque dans le grand public où ils concurrencent les récits de voyage, leur contenu montre la ténacité de l’ethnocentrisme et surtout celle du complexe de supériorité des peuples européens. Il faut attendre le milieu du XXe siècle, sous les effets combinés de la décolonisation et du concile Vatican II pour que les esprits évoluent lentement vers une plus grande tolérance. Entre temps, un nouveau genre est apparu et s’est développé: celui des récits ethnologiques en bonne et due forme. Un peu partout sur la planète, les ethnologues sont rapidement partis en croisade contre les entreprises missionnaires, criant à la déculturation, à la contamination chrétienne et rappelant au monde la diversité des cultures et des traditions, mais sans interroger assez leur propre entreprise et le sens de leurs actions ou de leurs enquêtes. Sur ce point, de nombreuses chroniques missionnaires s’avèrent anthropologiquement très riches pour saisir la diversité des cultures et leurs caractéristiques. Pour se limiter aux Amériques et à une période plus ancienne, citons ces textes encyclopédiques que nous livrent Fray Bernardino de Sahagun (1981 [1730]; voir aussi León-Portilla 2002; José de Acosta (1979 [1590]); Fray Alonso de Benavides (1954 [1630]); ou encore, les monographies de Jean de Léry (1980 [1578]); d’André Thevet (1983 [1557]); de Martin Dobrizhoffer (1967 [1784]). La richesse de ces ouvrages dépasse le plan strictement ethnographique. Claude Lévi-Strauss (1955 : 84) ne s’y est pas trompé lorsqu’il considère L’histoire d’un voyage fait en la terre du Brésil, publiée par le pasteur genevois Jean de Léry, en 1578, comme « le bréviaire de l’ethnologue ». Comme l’illustre encore le cas du jésuite José de Acosta, c’est par l’expérience du voyage, par celle de la distance de soi et de l’altérité que des missionnaires ont découvert, bien avant Jean-Jacques Rousseau et les philosophes du XVIIIe siècle, l’universalité de la barbarie, de la guerre et de l’ethnocentrisme ou encore les limites de la pensée cartésienne. Fermin del Pino-Diaz (1992 : 323) cite avec raison une déclaration du père d’Acosta qui évoque celle de Montaigne dans Des Cannibales et dont, selon lui, tout anthropologue actuel pourrait s’enorgueillir: « La rudesse des barbares n’est pas produite par la nature mais par l’éducation et les coutumes ». En somme, c’est donc bien avant que l’ethnologie émerge comme discipline scientifique, que des missionnaires ont su conjuguer universalisme et relativisme. Rétrospectivement, chaque époque et chaque congrégation a son lot de missionnaires ethnologues. Leurs chroniques s’avèrent ethnographiquement beaucoup plus riches que les récits des voyageurs et des explorateurs. Alfred Métraux (1963) affirme que pour leurs observations méticuleuses sur les peuples du Brésil, les pères capucins Claude d’Abbeville (1614 [1963]) et Yves d’Évreux appartiennent à ceux qu’il nomme les « grands précurseurs de l’ethnographie française » qu’a connu le tournant des XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Les siècles suivants, de nombreux missionnaires ethnologues se retrouvent du côté des jésuites : Brébeuf en Nouvelle-France (Laflèche 1999; Reichler 2004), plusieurs jésuites au Paraguay (Saignes 1985), d’autres dans les Pays d’en Haut et au Canada (Servais 2005). Avec l’entreprise coloniale et l’époque du « réveil missionnaire », le XIXe siècle semble ouvrir une période de régression. Un examen plus attentif laisse pourtant apparaitre là encore des cas de missionnaires ethnologues et ce, dans la plupart des régions du monde : salésiens en Amazonie, missionnaires anglicans dans le Nord canadien, etc. Il n’en demeure pas moins vrai que la plupart des missionnaires de l’époque se détournent de l’ethnographie pour produire des récits de propagande où l’autre est réduit à un faire-valoir. Les récits de mission deviennent ainsi les pièces maitresses d’un travail d’édification et d’un système de propagande, d’un prosélytisme qui ne s’essoufflera vraiment qu’au milieu du XXe siècle, avec la promotion d’une pensée œcuménique et d’un respect des cultures. Plusieurs revues d’anthropologie du XXe siècle émanent encore d’œuvres missionnaires : il en va ainsi d’Anthropos, une revue fondée par le père Schmidt, d’Anthropologica, la revue canadienne d’anthropologie née en 1955, d’une collaboration entre des missionnaires oblats et des anthropologues, etc. Les missionnaires se montreront enfin de précieux experts sur le plan de l’étude des langues, produisant d’innombrables encyclopédies et dictionnaires. La décolonisation ne fera pas disparaitre pour autant les récits de missionnaires ethnologues. Les exemples de Philippe Chanson (2010) dans les Antilles, de Jacques Dournes (1955) au Vietnam et d’Éric de Rosny (1981) au Cameroun montrent, par ailleurs, comment le missionnaire peut être profondément transformé par l’expérience ethnographique (Burridge 1975; Laugrand et Servais 2013). Certains chercheurs ont tenté de problématiser ces contributions missionnaires en les comparant aux démarches ethnographiques et anthropologiques. Claude Blanckaert (1985: 12) a opposé « l’observation participante » des ethnographes à « la participation observante » des missionnaires, mais il faut bien admettre que les termes s’inversent à l’occasion. De nos jours, les anthropologues ne cessent de (re)découvrir toutes les ressources ethnohistoriques et ethnolinguistiques de ces journaux de bord tenus par les missionnaires européens ou indigènes, catéchistes ou évangélistes, répondant tantôt à la demande d’information de l’autorité institutionnelle de leur congrégation, tantôt à leur propre quête et curiosité. Souvent isolés, certains missionnaires ont sans doute obéi à leur passion personnelle, quitte à refouler leurs enquêtes ethnographiques comme l’illustre le cas du révérend E.J. Peck qui a préféré rester dans l’ombre mais répondre aux requêtes que lui faisait Franz Boas (Laugrand, Oosten et Trudel 2006). D’autres ont voulu suivre les incitations de leurs supérieurs et trouver des pierres d’attente ou des valeurs évangéliques dans les traditions qu’ils découvraient. Pour d’autres enfin, le décodage des cultures répondait à des stratégies de conversion et de communication interculturelle. On connait depuis longtemps la formule : « comprendre pour être compris ». De la traduction des catéchismes ou de la Bible en langue vernaculaire, à la production de traités savants sur la parenté ou la religion primitive, en passant par l’élaboration érudite de dictionnaires qui sont parfois de véritables encyclopédies, plusieurs missionnaires ethnologues ont apporté une contribution majeure à l’émergence de la discipline ethnologique. Même si la question des modes de lecture et des outils d’analyse de ces récits missionnaires fait encore débat méthodologique et épistémologique entre historiens, anthropologues et missiologues. Plusieurs missionnaires ont considérablement contribué aux débats anthropologiques : pensons à l’œuvre singulière du père Joseph-François Lafitau (1983 [1724]) sur la parenté (Duchet 1976; De Certeau 1985; Motsch 2001) ou encore aux travaux de Jacques Leenhardt (Naepels et Solomon 2007). Comme Leenhardt, d’autres figures missionnaires comme Aupiais et Leroy (Mary 2010) se sont mis à l’école des grands maitres de cette discipline savante et universitaire, et notamment de Marcel Mauss. En retour, leurs expériences du terrain et leur production écrite, en concurrence avec celles des administrateurs et d’autres observateurs, ont forgé bien des catégories de l’anthropologie religieuse et symbolique. Missionnaires et anthropologues partagent enfin une position de médiateurs, condamnés à devenir des transfuges ou à concilier les règles que leur groupe d’appartenance impose, avec les expériences et les catégories des autres souvent issus de mondes fort différents.

Définir la « diaspora » ne peut se faire sans signaler immédiatement que deux grands courants théoriques assignent à ce terme des acceptions assez différentes qui, si elles semblent se succéder, donnent lieu à des usages bien typés où se reconnaissent encore aujourd’hui les deux composantes majeures des ″diasporas studies″. Il existe ainsi un paradigme que l’on peut qualifier de ″classique″ qui cohabite de manière plus ou moins sereine avec un autre paradigme plutôt ″post-structuraliste″ lequel a largement dominé le champ consacré à l’objet ″diaspora″ depuis les années 1990. Pour entrer dans le domaine des études du fait diasporique, il nous faut ainsi partir d’une définition ″traditionnelle″ pour mieux comprendre la déconstruction dont la notion a fait l’objet. Dans cette perspective, le terme ″diaspora″ désigne les populations dispersées depuis une terre natale (homeland) qui ont conservé des liens durables entre les membres issus de cette dissémination, la longévité du sentiment d’appartenance collective se construisant en rapport avec la mémoire du territoire d’origine. L’étymologie du mot remonte à la Bible des Septante, traduction grecque des textes bibliques connus en hébreu et en araméen effectuée par des religieux juifs hellénophones. Le mot ″diaspora″ est formé à partir du verbe grec speiren (semer) et plus exactement du verbe composé diaspirein (disséminer). Selon les sources, il concerne soit l’exil de Babylone et la dispersion des Juifs après la destruction du second temple de Jérusalem (Bruneau 2004 : 8), soit la menace de dispersion comme châtiment divin envers les Juifs qui ne respecteraient pas la Loi de Dieu (Dufoix 2011 : 64). Historiquement, le nom ″diaspora″ appliqué à d’autres populations que le peuple juif s’accomplit dans une sphère judéo-chrétienne où Chrétiens, Grecs Orthodoxes, puis Protestants et Arméniens accèdent à cette dénomination selon le même schéma d’identification qui articulent les motifs de l’exil et de la persécution au sein d’un complexe mû par la religion. La dispersion volontaire au sein de diasporas dites ″marchandes″ s’affirme de son côté comme une sorte d’appendice de ce modèle religieux. La ″sortie″ d’une caractérisation par le religieux s’opère en même temps que la notion pénètre les milieux académiques. Les usages y sont d’abord sporadiques tout au long du XXème siècle, puis se resserrent autour d’une définition applicable à bien d’autres populations que celles du foyer biblique originel. Le premier des textes le plus remarquable est celui de John Armstrong (1976) qui pose le cas juif comme archétypal pour décliner à partir de lui une typologie où se distinguent des « diasporas mobilisées », plutôt « avantagées » à des « diasporas prolétaires » « appauvries » et « discriminées » au sein des « sociétés modernisées ». C’est avec l’ouvrage du politologue Gabriel Sheffer (1986) qu’est véritablement entamée la construction du champ des diasporas studies et que se trouve désignée une compétence migratoire particulière, à savoir celle de minorités qui dans les pays d’accueil, sont en mesure de ″préserver leur identité ethnique ou ethnico religieuse″ en lien avec ″un intérêt continu (...) dans les échanges avec leur terre d’origine″ (Sheffer 1986 : 9). Le modèle dit ″classique″ se consolide à partir de textes qui ont acquis le statut de références incontournables. Parmi eux figure l’article de William Safran (1991) publié dans le premier numéro de la revue phare fondée par Khachig Tölölyan en 1991 – Diaspora : A Journal of Transnational Studies – ainsi que l’ouvrage de Robin Cohen (1997). Ces deux écrits sont représentatifs de la perspective adoptée sur la base du modèle juif, même si c’est pour le ″transcender″ comme le dira Cohen (1997 : 21). La définition de critères sert à sélectionner parmi les populations migrantes celles qui correspondent à une formation diasporique. Plus ou moins nombreux, ces critères placent au premier plan la dispersion, le maintien durable d’une forte conscience communautaire, l’idéalisation de la patrie d’origine (Safran 1991 : 83-84 ; Cohen 1997 : 26). Sur cette base, des typologies sont proposées comme celle de Cohen (1997) où se côtoient des ″diasporas victimes″ issues de traumatismes (Africains, Arméniens), des ″diasporas de travail″ (Indiens), des ″diasporas impériales″ (Britanniques), des ″diasporas de commerce″ (Chinois, Libanais), enfin des diasporas dites ″culturelles″ (Antillais). Ces dernières, dont il faut noter qu’elles ne sont plus définies en rapport avec la cause de la dispersion, mais plutôt en lien avec la culture et l’identité, signalent en fait, comme nous le verrons plus loin, la nouvelle conception qui a émergé en adéquation avec les perspectives postmodernes. D’emblée, le concept de diaspora se présente comme transdisciplinaire. Politistes, historiens, sociologues, géographes anthropologues sont engagés dans les études des phénomènes diasporiques. On ne peut donc pas déceler une approche spécifiquement anthropologique tant les références sont facilement exportées d’une discipline à l’autre, et c’est sans doute ce qui fait la spécificité des diasporas studies. Le grand bouleversement du champ s’opère quand deux contributions majeures s’emparent de la notion et la font basculer dans un univers de significations réévaluées à l’aune de la posture anti-essentialiste. La diaspora classique, de par son insistance sur le caractère continu et quasi pérenne de la communauté par-delà la dispersion, véhicule les présupposés d’une nature sociale immuable. Avec les écrits de Stuart Hall (1990) et de Paul Gilroy (1993), la perspective est renversée. Plutôt que d’être réfutée, la diaspora devient au contraire emblématique d’une tout autre dispersion, celle qui concerne l’identité elle-même et touche aux fondements toujours incertains, contingents et labiles des façons d’être au monde. Le concept, de par sa charge sémantique évoquant la mobilité, la multi-territorialité, le voyage, l’exil, l’entre-deux, se trouve en concordance parfaite avec les exigences théoriques de la déconstruction post-structuraliste qui appelle la transgression des limites des grands récits. D’origine caribéenne, Hall et Gilroy élèvent au rang paradigmatique la diaspora noire issue de la traite transatlantique, cette formation culturelle leur paraissant être l’antithèse des cultures ethno-nationales transportées dans la dispersion par les anciennes diasporas. La Black Atlantic de Gilroy (1993 : 19) se définit ainsi ″à travers le désir de transcender à la fois les structures de la nation et les contraintes de l'ethnicité″. Avec Stuart Hall (1990 : 235), la notion d’hybridité est consubstantielle à la diaspora : ″L'expérience diasporique comme je l'entends est définie, non par essence ou par pureté, mais par la reconnaissance d'une nécessaire hétérogénéité et diversité, (…) par hybridité″. Autant chez Hall que chez Gilroy, ces modèles ne sont rendus intelligibles qu’au travers du rejet d’autres identités diasporiques, puisque ″la diaspora ne fait pas référence pour nous à ces tribus dispersées dont l'identité ne peut être confortée qu'en relation à une terre d’origine sacrée où elles veulent à tout prix retourner (…). Ceci est la vieille forme de ‘l’ethnicité’, impérialiste et hégémonique″ (Hall 1990 : 235). Cette contradiction théorique qui rend le postulat anti-essentialiste fortement dépendant de l’existence supposée réelle d’identités ″non-hybrides″ a donné lieu à des approches critiques (Anthias 1998 ; Chivallon 2002) sans pour autant miner les perspectives qu’elles ont ouvertes. En dissonance avec les premiers usages classiques du terme ″diaspora″ appliqué déjà anciennement au monde noir des Amériques (Chivallon 2004 : 149), elles ont permis de mettre au premier plan les multiples enseignements de l’expérience (post)esclavagiste des Amériques dans son rapport avec la modernité occidentale, bien au-delà des cercles spécialisés sur la diaspora noire. L’amplification des textes de Hall et Gilroy a été étonnamment rapide et a produit un véritable déferlement dont le texte de James Clifford (1994) s’est fait l’un des plus remarquables échos trouvant matière à alimenter sa perspective sur les travelling cultures auprès d’une diaspora devenue l’antithèse du modèle ″centré″ de Safran. La myriade des études diasporiques développées tout au long des années 1990 en est devenue insaisissable, amenant à parler de ″fétichisation″ du terme (Mitchell 1997) au sein d’un vaste ensemble discursif où se fabrique la coalition entre les épistémologies post-modernes, post-structuralistes, post-coloniales et l’objet providentiel de la ″diaspora″ pour les substantialiser. Cette ferveur académique s’est sans doute essoufflée au cours de la dernière décennie. Une fois l’engouement passé et qui aurait pu faire croire à l’abandon définitif de la perspective traditionnelle, les dichotomies demeurent. De ce point de vue, la conférence donnée par Khachig Tölölyan à l’Université d’Oxford en 2011, peut faire office de dernier bilan. Il y est question d’une cohabitation toujours effective entre les conceptions classiques et ″post″, non sans que son auteur évoque une opposition qui fait encore débat, préférant pour sa part réserver à la notion de ″diaspora″ les tonalités de la définition classique, et réclamant en définitive le mot ″dispersion″ pour englober (réconcilier ?) les binarités qui ont structuré le champ des diasporas studies. Dans tous les cas, à l’écart de la révolution conceptuelle à laquelle a pu faire penser la diaspora, la routinisation semble bel et bien aujourd’hui installée.
