Resumen
This paper reviews the literature on the use of audio-visual to improve lower proficiency learners’ English Language. Audio-visual aids have been very beneficial to make learning interesting among the English as a second language (ESL) because it facilitates learning. Teachers have to be innovative in their pedagogy approach to make language teaching effective. Today, teachers are no longer dependent on traditional method of teaching instead they have adapted different techniques to teach language. Past studies have reported that teachers opted to use audio-visual because students showed less interest towards English language, students view English language as subject to fulfil the examination requirement, students’ displayed reluctance to speak due to their fear to make mistakes in pronunciation and other. Hence, this paper further analyses the need to investigate the issues that are related on the usage of audio-visual aids to the teaching of English language which needs immediate attention.

Resumen
Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South African society presents a complex and diverse environment to social scientists. Within immense economic stratification; a multitude of cultures and classes; languages and their dialects; and varied racial groups, researchers attempt to produce information that contributes constructively to policy, programs and a host of services. Beneath the surface also lay complex power issues informed by both political and cultural histories. Many contexts in which researchers find themselves continue to be marginalised and oppressed due to factors such as illiteracy and low-levels of education, age, gender and poverty. These groups often include women and children, in particular adolescents. Qualitative visual methods may provide researchers with a tool by which to address many of the concerns raised in the literature surrounding research carried out under such conditions. Visual methods may remove inherent power imbalances, as well as traditional barriers, such as culture and language, that stem from more 'conservative' research methods. Images may allow participants to vocalise the taken-for-granted in their lives in an empowering manner. The recognition and use of visual images in research with marginalised and oppressed groups is being increasingly recognised by the larger research community. A preliminary overview of the available literature highlights existing disagreement surrounding the theoretical underpinnings of visual methods. This is particularly seen in the various and confusing levels of abstraction presented in the literature. The primary aim of this study is therefore, to gain clarity and understanding as regards the methodological and epistemological underpinnings of visual research methods within the social sciences. As such, a comprehensive literature review has been conducted. A second aim of the study is to set out a typology of methods that would be relevant for use in marginalised communities. The third aim of the study is empirical in nature and aims to highlight the role and/or possibilities of visual research methods within the South African social sciences research context. This is achieved by means of a case study which explores how motherhood is experienced by five teenagers in a sub-economic community outside of Cape Town. It does this by providing participants cameras with which to visually express their understanding and experiences of motherhood. Processed photographs in this case study have been analysed by means of informal discussion, directed by the images, with the participants themselves. These discussions were recorded and transcribed. The results of the interviews were then analysed using grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). The results emerging from this have been compared with relevant literature. In this way, results are also triangulated, adding to their reliability (Lucchinni, 1996). Consequently, results of this case study provide a comparative component by which to assess the applicability of visual methods in the South African research context. Both the literature review as well as experiences of the case study also form the basis of suggestions for further exploration.

Video, a major medium of communication with which this study is concerned, is seen to possess characteristics distinguishing it from broadcast television. Five genres of video are identified: Information, Documentary, Entertainment, Enrichment, and Experimental, the first of which embraces usage in research and teaching. In this respect Information Video has two sub-genres, Process Video (unplanned and/or unscripted) and Product Video (planned and/or scripted), both of which are examined in this study. The locale of the field of study is within post-mass media communication with the theoretical framework deriving from the work of Krippendorff who states that whilst no one individual can share another's thoughts (internal understandings) there can be 'expressed understandings' communicable to others. Because individuals are different, as are their experiences and backgrounds, the extent to which an 'expressed understanding' is shared will vary from person to person. 'Internal understandings' about Information Video as used in research and teaching are only able to be articulated when they become 'expressed understandings'. Those understandings or conceptions, which are 'understood' by others, become shared and form a 'collective pool' of 'expressed understandings'. In specific areas such as jurisprudence, visual anthropology and the quantitative sciences, the 'collective pool' of expressed understandings is formalised in published procedures, codes and texts thus becoming 'procedural'. This study lies in the domain of research and teaching in which there is no formalised recognition of collective 'expressed understandings'; that is, where Information Video is non-procedural. Problematisation of an issue or process occurs in two distinct stages: awareness of the existence of the context in which the issue or process lies (conceptualisation) and identification of the issue or process within the context (proceduralisation). This study proposes that although the use of Information Video may be non-procedural it is not necessarily 'unconceptualised'. Following this the research questions are 'What conceptions of the phenomenon of Information Video in researc~ and teaching are held by non-procedural users ?'and 'Is it necessary for the use of Information Video to be problematised in all research and teaching?'. A communication model for Information Video is created to facilitate contextual grouping and discussion of published reports from non-procedural users covering a broad spectrum of use and disciplines. This model comprises five elements; VideoRecording (technological and human factors influencing recording), Video-Viewing (technological and human factors influencing viewing), Video-Medium (characteristics of the video-medium; technical and human aspects), Video-Data (technical considerations and human understandings of the video-data), and Video in a Research and Teaching Context (function of video in a research and teaching context; technical and human aspects). Documentation of the procedural use of Information Video shows that problematisation includes practical factors (shot sizes and obtrusive placement of equipment), and philosophic considerations (theories of realism and emotive responses), both of which influence the recording, viewing and interpretation. These factors are also applicable in non-procedural use. The literature makes clear that where non-procedural users consider that Information Video can have measured influence on events it is occasioned by 'chance' and introspection without reference or adequate comprehension and experience of video use. Twenty staff and postgraduate students are interviewed, their responses phenomenographically analysed and six categories of description of Information Video extracted; Video as Data-Reality, Video as Subject-Facilitation, Video as a DataPackage, Video as Practitioner-Augmentation, Video as a Practitioner-Problem, and Video as a Data-Component. The multifarious relationships between the six categories and research and teaching are clarified in the diagram where the Outcome Space displays the manner of practitioner approach (grounded either in 'theory' or 'practice'), and a focus on 'video-data' or on 'videoing', the latter being a process which includes the role of people and equipment. Comparison of categories of description held by the interviewees, and mentioned in the published literature reviewed, shows that although researchers and teachers may use video in a non-procedural way, (the second stage of problematisation), the first stage of problematisation, that of conceptualisation, is present. This is found to be characterised by fragmentation, diversity, non-specific relationships with disciplines, sublimation, and introspection. This study also finds that for texts to be comprehensive and useful to a wide range of Information Video users, individual understandings must be addressed. It proposes that a non-discipline based Information Video in research and teaching text may be a way to improve the use of 'non-procedural' Information Video.

Resumen
A number of issues related to graduate education in pharmacy have become apparent in the last several years. Recruitment of pharmacy students into graduate programs is one of the concerns. Currently, little information exists regarding this topic other than annual enrollment data. A certain number of pharmacy undergraduates must pursue graduate education to allow for the continued growth of the profession. A study was conducted to determine if a newly created videotape intervention would change participants attitudes and awareness levels concerning graduate educational pursuits in pharmacy. First and third professional year students at four Colleges of Pharmacy were randomly assigned to the treatment or control groups. Members of the control group were asked to complete the survey instrument only. The instrument consisted of three measures of intention to pursue graduate education, personal attitudes toward this pursuit, and perceptions of how significant others (the subjective norm) felt about these endeavors. The Theory of Reasoned Action (Ajzen and Fishbein) provided the theoretical framework for the research. Results of the study indicated that the intervention was able to change intentions, attitudes, and awareness levels regarding graduate education and research activities. Intentions of enrolling in graduate school did not differ between two entry level degree programs or in males versus females. First year students had higher intentions of obtaining graduate education than third year students. The subjective norm was more important than attitudes in predicting the intentions concerning graduate school attendance. These results demonstrate that positive changes in intentions, attitudes, and awareness levels can be obtained from such videotape interventions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The area of study is the notion of validity in image-based research, i.e. research approaches where visual images such as photographs or video recordings form an integral part of one or more of the methods used. In the literature investigation chapters of the study, (1) the notion of validity is reviewed with special reference to contributions by Cook and Campbell, Guba and Lincoln, Kvale, Lather and Morse; (2) the inherent properties of visual images are discussed from a semiotic perspective, and (3) following a discussion of reflexivity in image-based research, the various domains of image-based research practice are demarcated according to the unit of analysis, the data format, the researcher role (outsider, insider, participant) and the production of the visual material (ex ante or ex post with weak or strong researcher control). The literature investigation chapters were taken as the point of departure for the development of a conceptual framework for assessing validity in image-based research, the mechanics of which are illustrated with reference to selected aspects of image-based research projects by Lomax and Casey, Clark and Zimmer, Rich and Chalfen, DuFon and Chaplin. The conceptual framework was refined on the strength of a Delphi study. The Delphi procedure involved canvassing and pooling the opinions of experts in the field of image-based research about issues of validity with a view to ensure that the assumptions made during the development of the conceptual framework fit sufficiently with image-based research practice. Flowing from the literature investigation chapters as well as the Delphi procedure, the central thesis of the study is that the notion of validity is in the first instance contextdependent and that this is compounded in the case of image-based research by the relative instability of iconic codes and the strong drift towards 'unlimited' semiosis inherent in the visual communication process.

Behavioural research studies often include a data acquisition process, during which subjects are observed, and the displayed behaviours recorded, and a subsequent analysis process, during which the observed behaviours are analysed. In addition the data acquisition process could occur in real-time, or at a later stage, by referring to a recording of the original session. This dissertation addresses the latter approach through the use of computer based digital video technology. A windows based video analysis system, called VAS, that was developed to assist with the acquisition of observed behaviours from the video, and the analysis thereof is discussed. This is followed by a discussion of the implementation of VAS. Finally the directions for further research are identified, and discussed.

Resumen
Polyvocal hypermedia publications provide an avenue of redress for certain postmodern, feminist, and postcolonial critiques of ethnographic and social sciences research and reportage. The thesis opens with a critical positioning of anthropology in colonialism and the construction of an exoticised "other' with reference to representations of the Nuu¬chah-nulth (Nootka) and Upper St'at'imc (Lillooet) First Nations with whom the author has worked collaboratively. This critical enquiry sets the background for an explication of the current politics, ethics, and methodologies for ethnographic research and publication. In light of these issues and current responses, the latter half of the thesis explores hypermedia publication as an avenue for further experimentation in research and publishing methods. An analysis of the features, benefits, possibilities and challenges of working in hypermedia is provided with illustrations from two hypermedia projects that the author co-produced with Nuu-chah-nulth and Upper St'at'imc organizations. In conclusion, the author supports further experimentation in hypermedia while raising concerns about navigational design and technological obsolescence.

Resumen
This thesis presents an investigation into the effect of Liberated Learning Technology (LLP) on academic listening comprehension, notetaking and listening strategies in an English as a foreign language context (L2). Two studies are reported: an exploratory study and subsequent main study. The exploratory study was undertaken to determine L2 and native speaker (L1) students' perceptions on the effectiveness of the technology on academic listening and notetaking. The main study took a more focused approach and as a result, extended the exploratory study that was done in an authentic lecture context in order to gather data to measure listening comprehension and notetaking quality. The participants in the main study comprised six L2 students: five of whom intended to go to university. The methodology was a multimethod one: data was gathered from notetaking samples, protocol analysis, email responses and a questionnaire. Results indicated that continuous speech recognition (CSR) has the potential to support the listening comprehension and notetaking abilities of L2 students as well as facilitate metacognitive listening strategy use and enhance affective factors in academic listening. However, it is important to note that as CSR is an innovative technology, it first needs to meet a number of challenges before its full potential can be realized. Consequently, recommendations for future research and potential innovative uses for the technology are discussed. This thesis contributes to L2 academic listening and notetaking measurement in two areas: 1. the measurement of LLP-supported notetaking; and, 2. the measurement of LLP-supported academic listening comprehension.

Miller, Gwenneth. "Modelling an innovative approach to intermediality within visual art practice in South Africa". Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/22002.

Texto completo
Resumen
The study is practice-led in visual art and it explores the impact of intermediality to validate that new knowledge emerges via processes that lead to possibilities of transformative hybridity. Intermediality was established and generated through a productive reciprocity between practice and theory as well as between analogue and digital art. The research created a community of enquiry through an exhibition entitled TRANSCODE: dialogues around intermedia practice (2011) in order to model innovative approaches towards improvement of transmedial artistic practice. The diversity of work by artists involved in this exhibition allowed exploration of a range of creative processes to investigate and understand characteristics of productive intermediality. The concept of transcoding in this study was derived from Deleuze and Guattari, which describes how one milieu functions as a foundation for another, implying an intermedial tension. TRANSCODE alludes to the mediation that transcribes meanings across boundaries and within complexity. Selected characteristics of narratives, space, embodiment and visual systems were researched through the lens of mediamatic thinking, which refers to thinking via media. The study proposes that intermediality is best seen as a construct of the tensional differences that become enriched within the grey areas. In applying Deleuze and Guattari‘s metaphor of the rhizome and Tim Ingold‘s concept of the mycelial mesh, the research project not only prompted structured collective thinking through practice, but also captured various case studies relevant to practice-led methodology.

Resumen
AbstractThis chapter contributes to the understudied research areas of Nordic foreign aid media history and Nordic co-operations concerning the mobilization of public opinion on foreign aid. The study asks: What exchanges of ideas regarding information strategies took place between the Nordic aid agencies during the launch of the Second Development Decade (1970s)? Utilizing governmental archive documents the study demonstrates that Nordic co-operations shifted from embracing “Nordicness” in field projects to using Nordic connections as a backstage think-tank for mutual, but domestic, goals of public persuasion, focusing on film as an information device. It is revealed that cooperative efforts were hampered by the agencies’ lack of experience in audio-visual co-production, by different discursive understandings of “development” and by the difficulty to transnationally co-operate around nationally grounded information regimes.

This chapter aims at analyzing the effective teaching methodology for the iGeneration students who learn English as a second language. iGeneration students are the students who are born in between 1995 to 2012. As the iGeneration students are not interested in reading books, there has to be another method which can be used to teach them. This generation of students are using the technology effectively. The teachers who teach English for the students have to adopt a new method. To find out the best method for English language teaching, 150 students were taken for the research. They were divided into three sections namely A, B, and C sections. Each section was taught with different methods. At last, a test was conducted for all the students and marks were awarded for the test. Based on the marks scored by the students, it is found that audio-visual method was effective for learning English language.

Resumen
Animation is a synthesis of ideas that often encounters unpredictable, illogical, and imagined domains. In those animated worlds, recorded sound is now part of a coalition of two sensory forms mediated through hearing and vision. Sound has therefore been embedded in the audio-visual toolbox since the successful synchronisation of sound and picture. Sonic elements now contribute significantly to how animators might shape their films and express ideas. These animated worlds also often represent deeply rooted expressions of the interior mind of the artists and animators themselves. This chapter explores the relationship of sound to image in the evolutionary and increasingly variable animated forms that are currently proliferating. It aims to focus on sound as being the primary channel that is best able to reflect those interior ideas within a range of animated media. The exploration seeks to do this through tracing proto-cinematic ideas in the art of the past and animation practice that researches the sonified and animated image using musical and figurative metaphors.

Resumen
This paper deals with an intelligent mine periphery surveillance system, which has been developed by CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad, India, as an aid for keeping constant vigilance on a selected area even in adverse weather conditions like foggy weather, rainy weather, dusty environment, etc. The developed system consists of a frequency modulated continuous wave radar, a pan-tilt camera, a wireless sensor network, a fast dedicated graphics processing unit, and a display unit. It can be spotting an unauthorized vehicle or person into the opencast mine area, thereby avoiding a threat to safety and security in the area. When an intrusion is detected, the system automatically gives an audio-visual warning at the intrusion site where the radar is installed as well as in the control room. The system has the facility to record the intrusion data as well as video footage with timestamp events in the form of a log. Further, the system has a long-range detection capability covering around 400 m distance with an integration facility using a dynamic wireless sensor network for deploying multiple systems to protect the extended periphery of an opencast mine. The field trial of this low-cost mine periphery surveillance system has been carried out at Tirap Opencast Coal Mine of North Eastern Coalfields in Margherita Area, Assam, India and it has proved its efficacy in preventing revenue loss due to illicit mining, unauthorized transportation of minerals, and ensuring safety and security of the mine to a great extent.

Resumen
Compared to parents of healthy children, parents of severely or chronically ill children have significantly worse physical and mental health and a lower quality of life, e.g. because of lack of sleep. The proposed solution aims at assisting caregivers by means of a remote monitoring service run by professional nursing staff which should allow parents to get a good night’s sleep. A smart algorithm has been developed to detect if a particular parameter (heart rate, respiration rate or oxygen saturation) has exceeded a pre-defined threshold and thus may imply an emergency. Parents are only alerted after a professional nurse in the monitoring centre has cross-checked vital parameter trends and carried out an audio-visual inspection. The quality and accuracy of the system has been validated through iterative testing including a test performed in a children’s hospital to ensure that the monitoring system is not inferior to a hospital set-up.

Resumen
With the rapid employment of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), drivers will perform more varied and demanding tasks, which may result in reduced perception and response to emergencies. Existing studies have proved the effectiveness of multimodal warning signals and found that they can reduce drivers’ response time. However, most of these studies only focus on the superposition effect between different channels. There is a lack of research on the correlation between different channels and their impact on drivers’ workload level. Therefore, a multimodal warning signal model based on the theory of Audio-visual synesthesia is proposed in this paper, and the effects of this model on road safety in the scenario of automatic driving are explored through a controlled experiment of synesthesia and non-synesthesia signals. The results show that compared with the non-synesthetic signal, the multimodal warnings based on synesthesia can transmit the relevant information more quickly, and also reduce the workload level of the driver in the assisted driving scenario. The findings will aid the design of an early warning system for future autonomous vehicles.

Resumen
Abstract The involvement of artificial intelligence in manufacturing settings has revolutionized the relationship between humans, computers, and workforce environments. The prior cyber-physical systems are developing rapidly due to advances in technology. However, human consideration has not advanced at the same rate. Only highlighting technology advancement is not sufficient, given the high interconnectivity between human-technology in Industry 4.0. Integrating the human factor in design and implementation of cyber-physical technology leads to the holistic development of cyber-physical-social systems (CPSS). Nonetheless, little is known regarding workers’ behavior and ethics that mainly pertain to the human factors of CPSSs. Also, little effort is given to seek a methodologically rigorous way to investigate human factors in CPSS. To fill the gap, this paper proposes a research framework that aims to explore the interaction between humans and AI agents in manufacturing setting. Incorporating human considerations properly can enhanced the development of an integrated cyber-physical-social system. The goal of the research methodology presented here is to fundamentally understand a common dimension in CPSS. The objective of the proposed study is to determine how nudging impacts user response on a manufacturing line, both in terms of manufacturing performance and human response. To do so, we introduced the concept of nudging, which can come in the form of audio, visual, and haptic, refers to signals sent by a cyber-physical device to humans to illicit a performance related response. The design of an experiment is discussed in this paper. Quantitative data (assembly time, quality, and assembly errors) and qualitative data (recorded video, pre-experiment questionnaire, and post-experiment interviews) will be used for analysis to determine if and how the types of nudging are observed in cyber-physical-social environments that we see today can impact human response. The results of this research methodology will help inform engineers how cyber physical systems should be implemented in manufacturing environments while considering the impact it has on the human.

Resumen
Abstract In the era of Industry 4.0, the machining sound has been extensively adopted in tool condition monitoring systems, virtual machining environment, and remote machining solutions. However, only limited attention has been paid to understand how experienced machinists detect tool wear and improper cutting conditions based on their hearing in the real machining environment. This paper aims to experimentally investigate and analyze the auditory perception of CNC operators during the cutting process and their capabilities of detecting unfavorable cutting conditions and faults using their sense of hearing and expertise. The sound in the machining environment was analyzed in the aspect of sound pressure levels (SPL). Optimal positions for sound sample acquisition were determined and audio data was recorded for future analysis. Experimental cutting tests with simulated process faults were conducted, where machinists with varying degrees of experience observed the process, listened to the machining sound and tried to determine whether cutting conditions were normal or if faults occurred. The primary research goal was to analyze how well operators can monitor the process using their various senses and to investigate the role of sound and auditory perceptions of trained professionals in cutting process supervision and monitoring. SPL measurements have shown that the sound pressure varies substantially in the machining environment, which is expected to affect the quality and volume of recorded machining sound depending on microphone positioning. Cutting tests have shown that the machinists use various senses to determine faults in the process, relying most significantly on auditory stimuli, with other factors, such as vibrations or visual examination of the workpiece having a secondary effect in the assessment of cutting process conditions and outcomes.
