These practices address subaltern local and indigenous actors, seek their compliance and thereby contribute to the stabilization of otherwise all-too-fragile global carbon governance systems. In this article I analyze the governing effects of such practices by drawing on Robert Fletcher's concept of "multiple environmentalities" and Tania Murray Li's "analytic of assemblage." Promoting nature-positive forestry requires sustainable timber production that aligns with ecosystem service (ES) conservation. However, Japan’s recently implemented top-down timber production policy may undermine sustainability in local forest landscapes. We assessed the spatial sustainability of plantation forestry by comparing actual logged areas (2000–2019) with allowable logging areas. Logged areas were identified using satellite imagery analysis, while allowable logging areas were estimated by excluding forests at high risk of landslides or with unclear ownership and dividing the remaini

This study examines the establishment of a Hub for Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis (HUB-CEIS) centred on a forest biomass waste plant in Fundão, Portugal, presenting an innovative model for rural industrial symbiosis, circular economy governance, and sustainable waste management. Designed as a strategic node within a reverse supply chain, the hub facilitates the conversion of solid waste into renewable energy and high-value co-products, including green hydrogen, tailored for industrial and agricultural applications, with an estimated 120 ktCO2/year reduction and 60 direct jobs. REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) is a global mechanism established under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by curbing deforestation and forest degradation. Conceptually, REDD+ operates as a results-based mechanism whereby participating countries must demonstrate verified emission reductions to receive performance-based incentives. In addition to emission reduction, REDD+ encompasses forest conservation, sustainable forest management, and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks. As one of the

Social Forestry (SF) is fundamentally designed to enhance community welfare while promoting environmental sustainability. Ministerial Regulation of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) No. 4 of 2023 seeks to accelerate the governance of Social Forestry programs with the dual aim of advancing local livelihoods and preserving forest ecosystems. The regulation is envisioned as a mechanism for fostering economic equity and creating better livelihood opportunities for rural communities. This research specifically explores two core inquiries: first, how the aforementioned regulation is being implemented

In recent years programs of private regulation have spread from North America and Europe to developing countries around the world. Though central to debates over public versus private international governance, little is known about the actual operations of these programs, especially in developing countries where weak state regulation has failed for decades to control environmental degradation. This paper assesses the effectiveness in Argentina of two prominent global private environmental regulatory programs'the chemical industry's Responsible Care® program and the Forest Stewardship Council.
