Resumen
Abstract: Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) population in India has been on a rise due to their high breeding rate and ability to acclimatize to various environments (Imam 2013). They are often seen in Human habitations especially in agricultural fields, raiding crops and becoming a nuisance to the farmers. According to agricultural department, the marauding macaques have raided agricultural crops worth Rs 185 crore and horticulture crops worth Rs 38 crore in various districts of HP in 2014. To address this menace, sterilization programme is carried out at respective Monkey sterilization centre

Resumen
An unusual but sustaining case of interspecific infant care behaviour was observed in June 1985 while an ecological and behavioural study of the macaques was being conducted in the forest of the Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong. We describe this specific interaction among three long-tail macaque infants (Macaca fascicularis) and their mothers and two stump-tail macaque (Macaca thibetana) females who acted as "babysitters." The cross-species infant care observed took place in a polyspecific group which also included rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and hybrids of rhesus and long-tail monkeys. This u

Resumen
The present study investigated whether peaks in female sexual initiation could accurately predict conception in group-living female rhesus monkeys. Behavioral observations, 4 or 5 days per week in large, stable, social groups of monkeys, provided frequencies of female initiation of proximity, sexual solicitation, mounts, and ejaculations. Since a preovulatory peak in female sexual initiation is likely linked to the preovulatory oestradiol surge, we used the third day after a peak in behavior as the behavioral estimate of conception date. For each pregnancy, an independent estimate of conceptio

Resumen
Social interactions of twenty-four adult female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were examined in groups containing one, two and three adult males from August 1995 to June 1996. Hypotheses were: (1) Social rank will influence female access to mates: Higher-ranking females would have priority of access to mates. (2) Adult sex ratio will influence female interactions with adult males and females: In groups with fewer males per female, female access to mates will depend on dominance rank. In groups with more males per female, female access to mates will depend on active competition: All females wi

Texto completo
Resumen
Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a complex phenotype that occurs with an increasing prevalence of about 7-34% in humans and 10-12% in non-human primates (NHPs). This study evaluated the efficacy of probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri as a treatment for self-injurious behavior (SIB) and sleep disruption in rhesus macaques. The treatment was proposed to alleviate mild self-biting, sleep disruption, and reduce chronically elevated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activity, all hallmark features of monkeys with this condition. The probiotic preparation included two strains of L. reuter
