ABSTRACT This article explores Cambridge University librarian Henry Bradshaw’s development of tests for the authenticity of works attributed to Chaucer and his application of these principles to two disputed works: the Middle English Romaunt of the Rose and the Tale of Gamelyn. It makes use of unpublished archival papers and reconsiders historical editorial approaches using methods from the digital humanities to display and analyze Bradshaw’s data. After establishing the nature of these rhyme tests and the context of their development, I consider their later use by Walter W. Skeat in the Clare

Challenging contemporary orthodoxies, notably Derrida's perception of the actor as an ‘interpretive slave’, Richard Hornby here suggests that so far from exerting a tyranny, the fixed text provides a lifeline which the actor, having grasped, then makes his or her own. If a tyranny exists, it is that of the auteur-director who denies the actor the creative freedom that can be claimed from the text on the page. Richard Hornby is Professor of Theatre at the University of California, Riverside, and regular theatre critic for The Hudson Review. He is the author of six books and over a hundred artic

ABSTRACT This article highlights the accomplishments of a nineteenth-century American editor of Chaucer’s works, Arthur Gilman. It describes the nature of those accomplishments and situates them in respect to the Chaucer editorial activity of the time and to Gilman’s background. When Gilman’s Chaucer edition appeared in 1879, it was unprecedented in several ways, and for fifteen years it was the best mostly complete Chaucer ever produced. In particular, the edition, the first newly edited collection of Chaucer’s verse published by an American press, was also the first to make use of the outpou

The purpose of this paper is to conduct a discourse-pragmatic analysis of the spatio-temporal systems in Chaucer’s language along the lines of historical pragmatics and discourse analysis. The text used for analysis is “The knight’s tale” adopted from the Riverside edition of The Canterbury tales. Language has built-in spatio-temporal systems by which speakers judge how distant the situations they wish to express are from their domain, i.e. proximal or distal. Spatio-temporal elements can be connected to each other to take either a proximal or a distal perspective in discourse. Based on this a

Abstract. On 8 August 2009, the extreme rainfall of Typhoon Morakot triggered enormous landslides in mountainous regions of southern Taiwan, causing catastrophic infrastructure and property damages and human casualties. A comprehensive evaluation of the landslides is essential for the post-disaster reconstruction and should be helpful for future hazard mitigation. This paper presents a systematic approach to utilize multi-temporal satellite images and other geo-spatial data for the post-disaster assessment of landslides on a regional scale. The identification of the Jewish people with ‘serpens antiquus qui vocatur Diabolus et Satanas’[1] is a cherished theme of medieval polemicists, and a close examination of the Queste del Saint Graal (c. 1220) reveals evidence of such an association on the part of the author. While reference is explicitly made to ‘la grant durté des Gyeus’,[2] a topos of the adversus Judaeos tradition associated with the hardness (duritia) of their hearts, which Christ referred to in Matthew xix.8,[3] the three knights of Arthur’s court who are proved worthy of attaining an open vision of the Grail, Pe
