Resumen
This article highlights the socio-pedagogical role of the school through the perceptions of schoolteachers who work in Greek elementary school, which are related to social pedagogy. The results of our research follow the literature review on socio-pedagogical issues. For the research process, a research tool (questionnaire) was developed to examine the extent to which each identified socio-pedagogical problem concerns teachers. The survey was completed by 225 teachers of all specialties, most of them primary school teachers. As a result of their responses, teachers are largely confronted with students’ behavioral problems, problematic communication between school and family, child abuse and neglect, and differences in the specific learning needs of children. It is proposed to focus the socio-pedagogical research on all of the above in order to strengthen teachers in their work.

Resumen
The goals of modern education go beyond mastering cognitive skills, competencies and knowledge. An equally important result of education is the child's school well-being, his/her positive attitude towards school, learning, teachers, and his/her own potential. This study is dedicated to the exploration of internal and external predictors of well-being in Russian elementary schoolchildren (N=1006).It assesses the impact of the learning system (developmental/traditional), satisfaction with relationships with teachers, and intrinsic and extrinsic types of academic motivation on school well-being and academic self-esteem. The results of the study show that the well-being of elementary schoolchildren is based on the positive impact of intrinsic and autonomous motivation and the negative impact of external motivation based on control and demands of teachers and parents. The results also show that the child’s relationship with the teacher and perception of him/her as an interesting person, ready to help and support in the learning process, play an important role in the child’s school well-being and intrinsic motivation. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) confirm that developmental education programs, in comparison with traditional ones, also contribute to school well-being and academic self-esteem of elementary schoolchildren. The practical significance of the study is to take into account the role of both pedagogical (the role of the teacher’s personality and the teaching system) and psychological factors (intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) in maintaining the well-being of elementary schoolchildren.

Resumen

Teacher professional development plays an important role in a teacher’s growth and every year school districts spend a large portion of their budgets in professional development activities. However, as districts face increasing budget cuts, funds for professional development compete against other district priorities. As a result, partnerships between school districts and teacher training institutions can play an important role in supplying school districts with professional development activities to fit their teachers’ needs. This article describes a partnership between a school district and a local university to provide over 100 hours of professional development to 30 elementary school teachers. Results from the evaluation of the program indicate that the program had a significant impact on participating teachers’ perceptions of their science knowledge and pedagogical skills.

Upon different qualifications used in the description of what a good teacher of basic education is, this research intends to analyze the manner in which certain teachers and pedagogical coordinators are able to identify it in their professional practice. Pedagogic and psychological theories were investigated, in specialized literature, which regulated the teaching conceptions chosen by schools at different times. In view of the current hegemony of the so-called \"competence pedagogy\" and its definition of a \"good teacher\" as \"competent\" teacher, this study sought to understand the way in which these ideas are considered in the investigated context. Hence, the study took as its starting point the considerations of José Pires Azanha and the reading of this author of works from Israel Scheffler, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Alain (Emile Chartier). As empirical basis, professionals from private schools were chosen from the city of São Paulo, who, through their trajectories in recent history, are considered as reference. These are establishments that were originated, directly or indirectly, from \"alternative schools\" of the 1970s, sought by parents who called themselves intellectuals from the left party and against the military dictatorship. Schools whose pedagogical projects seek to oppose the so-called \"traditional schools\", either by ambition for changes in the relationship between teachers and students or the highlight of the active role of students were selected. In these schools, a field research of qualitative character, by means of semi-structured interviews with coordinators of Elementary Schools I and with teachers appointed by them as good teachers was performed. In the interviews, theoretical references were identified and the influences that, from the New School movement until the so-called constructivism, guide both the work of the pedagogical coordinators as of the teachers. It was noted that the \"good teachers\" seek to preserve their points of view, even in the face of adverse conditions placed by the competitive market and the insertion of these schools in the neoliberal and business logic, in which competence and excellence speeches gain primacy. Descriptions that were broad, diffuse and with great liability were noticed in the definition of teachers and coordinators considered as \"good teacher\". However, teachers were less concerned with the coherence, awareness of the complexity of their craft, and the rhetorical character of the use of theories. On the comparison between the interviews of the pedagogical coordinators and teachers, it was noted that, due to different requirements and several positions they occupy in school organizations, some conflicting views and opposing perceptions were evidenced. In the case of coordinators, these contradictory speeches praise simultaneously, as the characteristic of a good teacher, the autonomy and the ability of submission to a pedagogy towards results and the evaluative control with a demand of the professor to be traditional and innovative at the same time.

Resumen
This chapter describes a teacher preparation model incorporating a STEM focused, technology enhanced course and field experiences for preservice teachers. This field-based science method course supports and engages preservice teachers in creating and implementing lessons for early childhood and elementary students enrolled in an afterschool STEM Enrichment Program offered in a diverse urban elementary school. Technology is woven throughout the model, supporting preservice teachers as they build their content knowledge, and research effective practices to teach and assess their students. This model also helps to address the need to enhance STEM instruction in schools and inspire preservice teachers to engage their students in the STEM learning process. Findings from the model's implementation indicates a positive impact on the preservice teachers' understanding of science content and standards, on their pedagogical practices to design STEM lessons based on the revealed understandings of students' knowledge, and on the development of their professional identities.

Resumen
There is a great need to provide science teachers with on-going and relevant professional development, but access to such opportunities can be challenging due to time, distance, and budget pressures. Online courses and programs can provide alternatives to address these challenges. This chapter presents approaches, findings, and recommendations for online professional development of elementary and middle school science teachers based on a case study of an online science education course and an online chemistry course. Three themes are discussed: the ability to incorporate inquiry-based teaching and learning in online environments, the importance of online discourse and reflection, and the role of linking theory with practice. Teacher participants reported increased experience exploring content via inquiry, felt actively engaged with their peers as they constructed their knowledge, and expected to adapt inquiry-based activities in their classrooms as a result of these online courses.

Resumen
This chapter details a qualitative study conducted with pre-service elementary school student teachers enrolled in a Masters course on cultural and linguistic diversity at one university teacher education institute in France. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of the course on the student teachers' understanding of culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms and questioned whether the use of multi-media resources throughout the course could contribute to fostering a greater sense of empathy towards their future culturally and linguistically diverse students. The data analysis reveals that the use of video in particular, in combination with theoretical readings, was highly instrumental in helping the students to understand the concepts linked to second language acquisition and in providing them with strategies for their linguistically and culturally diverse classrooms. The authors question whether the use of multi-media is sufficient to foster a sense of empathy in students and suggest further pedagogical interventions.
