Resumen
Procedures based on solutions of the direct and inverse geodetic problems are presented and their application in orthodromic and loxodromic navigation is analysed. They can be used in traditional navigation during a route planning and during sailing on the planned route in real time. The optimal division of orthodromes during planning and locally predicted short loxodromes during sailing – which allow orthodromic navigation also in manual steering – are proposed.

This paper develops an approach to solving the problem of controlling the movement of a ship along a route. It is assumed that the route is specified using waypoints connected by line segments. The main idea of the developed approach is to construct a set of auxiliary smooth functions having an extremum (maximum) on the corresponding sections of the route. The gradient vectors of the selected auxiliary functions are directed towards the corresponding section of the vessel's route. The sum of the vectors of the gradient of the auxiliary functions and the vector that specifies the direction on

High accuracy navigation and surveillance systems are pivotal to ensure efficient ship route planning and marine safety. Based on existing ship navigation and maritime collision prevention rules, an improved approach for collision avoidance route planning using a differential evolution algorithm was developed. Simulation results show that the algorithm is capable of significantly enhancing the optimized route over current methods. It has the potential to be used as a tool to generate optimal vessel routing in the presence of conflicts.

Merchant marine vessels have provided invaluable information about weather and climate over the seas. In this note, it is shown how these vessels also contribute to ocean research through systematic surveys of upper ocean temperature, salinity and currents. By repeatedly sampling a particular route, one can obtain an accurate picture of the mean state of the ocean and where and how it varies. With a few examples drawn from our own work we show how commercial shipping and cruise vessels, with their unparalleled access to the oceans, could give society far more extensive and valuable information

When an officer of the watch (OOW) faces complicated marine traffic, a suitable decision support tool could be employed in support of collision avoidance decisions, to reduce the burden and greatly improve the safety of marine traffic. Decisions on routes to avoid collisions could also consider economy as well as safety. Through simulating the biological evolution model, this research adopts the genetic algorithm used in artificial intelligence to find a theoretically safety-critical recommendation for the shortest route of collision avoidance from an economic viewpoint, combining the internat

A short enantioselective synthetic route to the cytotoxic marine natural product jaspine B has been developed. A chiral non-racemic primary α-allenol, obtained from pentadecanal, gave access to an enantioenriched 2-tetradecyl-2,5-dihydrofuran as key intermediate. A stereodivergent functionalization of this dihydrofuran allowed access in a few steps to jaspine B and its 4-epimer.

Resumen
The bengazoles are marine natural products with unique structure, containing two oxazole rings flanking a single carbon. They show very potent antifungal activity. The total syntheses of bengazole C and E are described following a convergent route which involves diastereoselective cycloaddition of an appropriately substituted nitrile oxide with a butane-1,2-diacetal-protected alkenediol as the key step.

Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) technology has recently emerged as a promising aid to maritime navigational safety and operational efficiency. ECDIS is likely to have multiple effects on the tasks bridge personnel must perform. However, careful consideration must be given to safety in adopting this new technology. A shiphandling simulator-based evaluation of some human factors aspects of the use of ECDIS is presented. The issues discussed include the effect on navigational safety and workload as a result of introducing ECDIS to the bridge, and the mariner's preference

Recently more and more evidence appears, proving that seafood consumers should be referred to risk group in which outbreaks of viral food poisoning and foodborne infectious diseases occurs, transmitted by food route. There are several reasons to refer seafood to a category of epidemiologically non-safe products: high microbial pollution of adjacent seas with sewage waters; many non-fish hydrocoles are natural filter feeding animals, which are infected by viruses in the process of vital activity, passing through their organism water and food particles; sufficient viruses stability in external e

Resumen
The paper presents the results of research on measuring the emissions from marine diesel engines in dynamic states. The problem is as follows: How to measure emissions of the composition of exhaust gases on board a ship, without direct measurement of fuel consumption and an air flow to marine diesel engine, during maneuvering the ship in the port area. The authors proposed a measurement methodology using an exhaust gas analyzer with simultaneous recording of the load indicator, engine speed, inclinometer, and Global Positioning System (GPS) data. Fuel consumption was calculated based on mean i

This review, covering the literature from 1966 to the present (2020), describes naturally occurring fungal bioactive anthraquinones and analogues biosynthesized by the acetate route and concerning several different functionalized carbon skeletons. Hydrocarbons, lipids, sterols, esters, fatty acids, derivatives of amino acids, and aromatic compounds are metabolites belonging to other different classes of natural compounds and are generated by the same biosynthetic route. All of them are produced by plant, microorganisms, and marine organisms. The biological activities of anthraquinones and anal

The paper addresses sustainability, heritage, management, and communication from UNESCO’s Marine World Heritage (MWH) perspective, analyzing its digital narrative footprint through social media. It aims to understand how MWH is conceptualized, managed, and communicated and whether it is framed with sustainability and biocultural values facilitating interactivity, engagement, and multimodal knowledge. Hence, a content analysis of the Instagram accounts of the MWH of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) sites and protected areas has been conducted. The study included evidence from their Instagram p

AbstractAt the end of the twentieth century, Russia's Northern Sea Route (NSR) has functioned primarily as a domestic marine transport system with Murmansk Shipping Company as the dominant operator and facilitator. Total cargo along the NSR in 1999 was 1.58 million tons; during 1997–99 no through transit cargo was carried on the NSR. The International NSR Programme (INSROP), backed by Japanese, Norwegian, and Russian interests, concluded in November 1999 with a key user conference in Oslo. The six-year (1993–99) INSROP effort produced a large body of new information about the NSR and Russian A
