The runestones on Bornholm have for a long time aroused discussion due to their singular character and dating as compared to most runestones in other parts of Denmark. In this paper, the relations between sponsors and rune carvers have been investigated through analysis of the carving technique by means of the first 3D-scanning and multivariate statistical analysis ever carried out on the Danish runestone material. The results indicate that the carvers were attached to the sponsor families and that the carvers were probably members of those families. During the fieldwork, a fragment of a previ

In 2017, eight runestones on Bornholm were scanned in 3D and the microtopography of the grooves was analysed by multivariate statistical methods. One of the stones was previously not known to runological research. The aim of this paper is to compare the carving technique of the Bornholm runestones with runestones from Swedish regions to shed light on old issues concerning Bornholm's links with other regions in and around the Baltic Sea. The rune carvers are important agents in this, as the runestones are often related to issues including landholding, Christianization, possible Swedish influenc

Abstract During recent excavations at Břeclav-Lány (southern Moravia, Czech Republic), archaeologists have found a fragmented bovine rib with runes. The rib was unearthed in an early Slavic pit-house and is radiocarbon- dated to ca. 600. The inscription begins at the break line and reads xbemdo (probably tbemdo), representing six of the last eight runes of the older fuþark – it seems that the lost piece of the rib exhibited the preceding part of the rune row. There is reason to believe that the carver was a Langobard who did not join the migration into northern Italy in 568 (or, alternatively,

The international law of culture is a broad field, which certainly goes beyond the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as the international organization entrusted with, among other things, cultural affairs. Indeed, if one considers the far-reaching definition of culture, then a vast number of institutions, rules of hard and soft law, and initiatives of different scope and shape exist, and new ones come into being. This institutional complexity and the ensuing rule fragmentation are indicative of multiple scenes of contestation, denoted by different actors, po

Consumer species are constantly selecting and adjusting which resource species are to be exploited in an antagonistic network. Here we incorporate a hybrid behavioural rule of adaptive interaction switching and random drift into a bipartite network model. One of the runes, the so-called os-rune, was used for at least 8 different phonemes. By tradition it has been used to date Viking Age runic inscriptions in the Scandinavian countries. The present work investigates the phonetic and phonemic value of the os-rune in Rune-Swedish inscriptions on stone, altogether 1,745 instances in 961 inscriptions. The investigation is based on the runecarvers’ own statements about themselves and their work, which is normally found in the signature or the carver formula of the inscriptions. The material comprises all carver formulas known from primarily Scandinavian Viking-age runic inscriptions, but since most of the inscriptions are found on rune-stones, there is a focus on runecarvers who worked in this material. The Viking Age rune-carvers and their readers used runes as a semiotic resource to convey and structure the messages on rune-stones. An analysis of the ways in which this resource is used together with other resources gives us a deeper insight into the relationship between writers and readers and into the written culture in which the rune-stones were produced. The present study treats runic carvings as multimodal texts in which different semiotic modes produce meaning by visual and verbal means. The roles played by runes in such texts are studied from three different perspectives. The empirica

Inference to the best explanation (IBE) tells us to infer from the available evidence to the hypothesis which would, if correct, best explain that evidence. As Peter Lipton puts it, the core idea driving IBE is that explanatory considerations are a guide to inference. But what is the epistemic status of IBE itself? One issue of contemporary interest is whether it is possible to provide a justification for IBE itself which is non-objectionably circular. We aim to carve out some new space in this debate. In particular, we suggest that the matter of whether a given rule-circular argument is objec

The purpose of this chapter is, first, to identify seven legal techniques through which certain situations that could otherwise fall within the scope of a rule or a set of rules are excluded from it (scope clauses, carve-outs, flexibilities, derogations, exceptions stricto sensu, excuses, and circumstances precluding wrongfulness) and, secondly, to clarify the implications (technical and practical) of using such techniques and the terminology that comes with them. Using the term ‘exception’ rather than other terms such as ‘carve-out’ or ‘exemption’ may have significant legal implications as regards matters such as (i) the burden of proof, (ii) the interpretative approach, (iii) the degree of deference accorded to a respondent under a provision, or (iv) the interplay with certain referral clauses.

Resumen
This chapter examines Lowell Liebermann’s Six Songs on Poems of Raymond Carver (2002). This exciting cycle requires a proficient and polished singer/pianist team. Vocal technique and musicianship will certainly be fully exercised; the songs are satisfyingly meaty, oozing with vitality and assurance. The vividly idiomatic piano writing is a test of stamina and concentration, and balance between voice and keyboard is a crucial issue. Bracingly memorable texts contain much sardonic, dark humour, tempered by passages of touching tenderness. Elements of pastiche, including ‘neoclassical’ runs and repeated rhythmic figures, are successfully incorporated—the fourth song even emulates a decorative Arabic monody. Some extremes of range may tax a young, inexperienced singer, but the cycle should make a tremendous impact in performance.

Resumen
Like the previous chapter, Michelle Brown’s contribution represents an instance of the integration of Christian and pre-Christian Germanic knowledge in the early Middle Ages. Brown explores the context and meaning of the distinctive late-tenth-century rune-stone carved at the royal burial ground of Jellinge in Denmark, viewing the monument as a book in stone and a symbol of conversion and of changing political agendas in Scandinavia in the tenth century. Ranging widely across early medieval art, Brown explains that the stone (like the Auzon/Franks Casket, to which she also alludes) draws upon both Christian and pagan Norse traditions ‘to form a new, integrated iconography that formed a distinctive expression of the Scandinavian experience of cultural synthesis and conversion’.

Resumen
This chapter discusses Athens in the early Hellenistic period, especially when subject to the rule of Demetrius of Phalerum. Alexander’s death also sparked the Wars of the Successors as his senior staff carved up his empire among themselves, but then went to war for even more territory. Athens was involved in these wars, especially when Antipater’s son Cassander won control of Greece, and established a puppet ruler in Athens by name of Demetrius of Phalerum. For ten years Athens was subject to Demetrius’ absolute rule. He introduced restrictive legislation including sumptuary laws, but he did allow Athenian culture, especially drama and philosophy, to flourish, as he himself was an intellectual. The Wars of the Successors eventually led to the execution of the surviving members of the Argead dynasty (Alexander the Great’s half-brother Philip III and Alexander’s son Alexander IV), and eventually also to the toppling of Demetrius of Phalerum by Demetrius Poliorcetes. But Athens was simply exchanging one Macedonian master for another.
