Resumen
Latino parents have lower levels of school involvement compared to other ethnic groups, which is often attributed—though not tested—to low English language proficiency. Using a population-based sample of 637 7th grade Latino youth attending an urban school district, we find no significant difference in maternal school involvement when mothers and students are either both fluent in English or both non-fluent. When students are more fluent than their mothers, however, maternal school involvement is significantly lower, suggesting that schools may need to take additional steps to encourage parental involvement when there is language dissonance between parents and their children.

Resumen
This study examined the relations of maternal warmth, behavioral control, and encouragement of sociability to social, school, and psychological adjustment in migrant children in China. The participants were 284 rural-to-urban migrant children ( M age = 11 years, 149 boys) in migrant children’s schools and their mothers. Data on parenting were collected from mothers’ reports. Data on children’s adjustment were collected from multiple sources including peer assessments, teacher ratings, self-reports, and school records. It was found that maternal warmth was associated with children’s social and school performance, and that maternal encouragement of sociability was associated with children’s psychological adjustment. Maternal behavioral control was not associated with children’s adjustment. The results indicate that maternal warmth, behavioral control, and encouragement of sociability may serve different functions in different domains of adjustment among migrant Chinese children.

Resumen
Most research examining the influences of maternal employment focuses on the mother and the child at only one stage of the child's life. By contrast, this study examines how temporal and status aspects of mothers' jobs during daughters' early childhood (aged 0 to 6), preadolescence (aged 7 to 12), and adolescence (aged 13 to 18) affect a key transition: the rate that daughters leave school. The sample consists of 246 White and 188 Black daughters aged 18 to 23 in 1990, drawing on data from both mothers and daughters from the 1968-1990 waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Findings suggest that part-time maternal employment during any point in childhood increases the likelihood that Black, but not White, daughters will remain in school. Maternal employment characteristics have little influence in determining whether White daughters remain in school.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Aim This study was carried out to investigate the effect of mother's age, education, occupation and income on the dental health behaviours and caries experience of her pre-school children in the District of Lahore, Pakistan. Methods This questionnaire based cross-sectional study evaluated the dental health status and oral health behaviors of 600 children in relation to the mother's age, education, family income and her domicile of residence. Chi square test was used to see the association between the different variables. The level of significance was taken as p<0.05. Result Tooth cleaning behaviors were found to be associated with all the maternal factors under study. Sugary food consumption was associated with mother's level of education and her family income while dental decay positively correlated with her residence and family income. Conclusion Younger age of the mother, high level of educational attainment, higher income and urban residence, all have a positive influence on the dental health practices of her pre-school children. Key Points 1. Dental health practices of the pre-school children are greatly influenced by the maternal characteristics. 2. Dental decay status of pre-school children is independent of the mother's education, income and residence. 3. Dental decay status of the pre-school children is low in Lahore, Pakistan.

Resumen
Introduction: The objective of this study was to assess the effect of parental residential school attendance on youth's participation in sport and physical activity (S/PA) at school and to explore the potential role that parental education and parental involvement in school activities may play in mediating this relationship. Methods: This cross-sectional study used the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey and included youth ages 12-17 (N=4,840). Structural equation modeling techniques were used for models with observed and latent variables. Sampling weights and bootstrap weights were used for all analyses. Results: The results indicate 62.87% of youth participated in S/PA; 27.54% at school; 31.52% outside of school, and 40.94% in school and outside school. Mothers who attended residential schools had lower levels of educational attainment. Maternal education had a positive effect on parental involvement in school activities in dual parent households and parental involvement had a positive effect on S/PA. The indirect effects of residential school attendance on parental involvement and participation in S/PA were significant only for youth living with both parents and only for the effect of maternal residential school attendance. Maternal residential school attendance had a negative effect on parental involvement and on participation in S/PA. Discussion: The findings from this study indicate that interpersonal factors and historical contexts shape Indigenous youth's participation in S/PA.

Resumen
Interview material, collected as part of a wider ethnographic study of sickness absence in an English primary school, is used to examine how mothers accounted for their decisions to keep children ‘off school sick’. Mothers' accounts suggested a process by which they tested their children's claims on sickness against suspicions of feigning illness. The paper describes, from the mothers' point of view, the process of negotiating sickness with children and how children are categorised as ‘pretending’, ‘upset’ or ‘really ill’. These decisions are set within a wider context comprising: a normative discourse of maternal child health care; contradictory demands placed on mothers by the image of children as simultaneously robust and vulnerable; the surveillance and contradictory demands of schooling; and the use by children of sickness as a means of exercising influence on their social situation. It is suggested that locating child health care in relation to childrens' point in their childhood career (for these children the transition to secondary school) and acknowledging the active role that children play in the construction of illness will facilitate a fuller picture of mothers' unpaid health work within the family.

Resumen
Objective: Concealed pregnancy is a public health concern with risks to girl-education as well as maternal and child health. This paper focuses on concealed pregnancy amongst adolescents attending schools in Limpopo province of South Africa. It defines concealed pregnancy, some reasons for concealment, methods used, partners in crime and implications for girl-education as well as maternal and child health. Materials and methods: A qualitative and exploratory study using in-depth interviews with 10 pregnant adolescents attending school, five parents and 10 educators on their experiences of caring for pregnant adolescents attending school was conducted. Results and Discussion: Results show that pregnant adolescents attending school conceal their pregnancies using various methods of keeping a secret, telling a lie, wearing baggy clothing, isolating and hiding among other students in overcrowded teaching spaces. They participate passively in learning activities to evade attention to themselves. Some authority figures such as educators and parents as well as other students are accomplices. Conclusion: To conceal pregnancies, pregnant adolescents attending schools flout antenatal care, thus increasing risks to women and children’s health. They also show lack of attentiveness to learning activities at school, thus losing chances to achieve an education. Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.19(4) 2020 p.620-624

Resumen
Abstract Although mothers of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience high levels of stress and schools constitute an important resource, the relation remains unknown between maternal stress and educational services. Responding to a national, web-based survey, 965 mothers of students with disabilities completed a 163-item questionnaire about parent stress. We examined which child, parent, and parent–school characteristics correlated with maternal stress. Mothers with lower stress levels reported better parent–school relationships and low levels of parent advocacy. However, lower stress levels were predominantly shown by mothers with good-to-excellent parent–school relationships (vs. poor-to-fair partnerships) and who engaged in virtually no (vs. any) advocacy activities. Lower maternal stress levels were also noted when children had fewer behavior problems, Down syndrome, and did not have autism. Less stress was also reported by mothers who had not enacted procedural safeguards, were minorities, and rated themselves lower on neuroticism and were more extroverted, dependable, and open to new experiences. This study has important implications for practitioners and researchers.

Resumen
Statement of the problem. At the moment, there is a decrease in the value of motherhood and child in Russian society. In this regard, a wide range of practical studies on the psychology of motherhood are carried out in science. Researchers agree that the maternal sphere of personality and psychological readiness for motherhood is formed throughout ontogenesis, but the main emphasis is on working with pregnant women; there is also a number of studies conducted among adolescents. Girls of primary school age pass a number of important stages in the formation of the maternal sphere, while a modern family does not create necessary conditions for future successful motherhood of a girl and there are no specially organized appropriate psychological and pedagogical conditions. The purpose of the article is to study the characteristics of the maternal sphere of personality among girls of primary school age, to determine tpsychological and pedagogical conditions for successful formation of the maternal sphere of personality. Materials and methods. The methodology of the study consists of the concept of ontogenesis of the maternal need-motivation sphere by G. G. Filippova, the theory of psychological readiness for motherhood (E.V. Matveeva, S.Yu. Meshcheryakova), analysis and synthesis of research papers on the psychology of motherhood by Russian and international authors. Four diagnostic methods were applied: the projective technique “Family Drawing” (V.K. Loseva), the questionnaire “Analysis of Family Relations” (E.G. Eidemiller, V.V. Yustitsky), the questionnaire “Methodology for Identifying Children with Parents” (A.I. Zarov), the author’s questionnaire for mothers (reveals features of passing the stages of formation of the maternal sphere in a girl). The basis of the study was Gymnasium No. 5 and Lyceum No. 28 in Krasnoyarsk. The sample included 53 girls (8–10 years old) and their mothers. Research results. Indicators of the formation of the maternal sphere of personality in girls of primary school age according to the stages of its formation are presented. The maternal sphere of personality at this stage of age development is quite developed among 51 % of girls, it is relatively developed among 45,2 % and it is not developed enough among 3,8 %. A more favorable picture is observed in the formation of an operational block, which is formed among 83 % of the surveyed. The need-emotional block is formed among a slightly smaller number of girls – 77,3 %. The greatest difficulties were noted in the formation of the value-sense block, which is formed among 70 % of the sample. Of all the results obtained, it is especially alarming that in junior school age for 41,5 % of girls the most significant figure in the family is not mother and only 45,3 % of respondents are in a psychologically close relationship with their mother. Conclusion. Conclusions are made about the formation of the maternal sphere of personality in the junior school age. The obtained data make it possible to talk about various and coordinated types of activities of teachers, narrow school specialists to create psychological and pedagogical conditions necessary for successful formation of the maternal need-motivation sphere of personality.

Resumen
Measles is a very contagious disease and still a health problem in Indonesia. Immunization coverage of measles BIAS in Pesawaran District is quite good (98.8%), but the incidence measles outbreaks in elementary school-age children still occur, this can be caused by various child factors, maternal and environmental factors. The purpose to examine the factors that influence outbreaks of measles are children of primary school age. The observational analytics study design with a mix methods approach. The participants consist of 27 cases and 54 controls, in-depth interviews with UKS teachers. Dependent variable was measles outbreak incidence in primary school age, independent variables were contact history, maternal age, maternal education, occupancy density, and UKS teacher knowledge. Bivariate using Chi Square test and multivariate analysis using logistic regression test. The result of bivariate analysis showed that there was a correlation between contact history (p=0,001), maternal age (p=0,009), occupancy density (p=0,023) with the incidence of measles outbreaks of primary school age children. Logistic regression test showed the significance value of contact history (p= 0,024), occupancy density (p=0,036), The result of in-depth interviews UKS teacher knowledge about measles is good. Conclusion of the factors that influence the incidence of measles outbreaks of primary school age children is a history of contact and occupany density with probability 83,25%. This research needs to be continued by examining other risk factors such as nutritional status, areas prone to outbreaks and implementation of the Clean and Healthy Behavior Program (PHBS) in schools.

Resumen
Objective: To know if there is a significant difference between the types of maternal vs. paternal parental socialization and if they are predictors of suicidal ideation in students of Ignacio Carrillo Franco (ICF) Preparatory School, May 2017. Material and methods: Observational, transversal, prospective study. The studiend population was the high school students ICF. The parental socialization styles of both parents were measured using the ESPA-29 scale and the suicidal ideation (Roberts scale) of the students. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed using ANOVA and multiple linear regression with the IBM SPSS Statistics 20 program. Results: There were 144 students, aged 15-17 (m16.31 ± SD 0.68). The maternal parental socialization style (Negligent vs Authoritarian Games-Howell m: 1.84, SD 0.57, Sig .011) shows significant difference vs paternal and maternal axes Acceptance/Implication (t: -2.85, Sig .005), Coercion/ Imposition (t 3.35, Sig .001), maternal dysplication (t 5.913, Sig .000) and paternal (t 3.343, Sig 0.001) are predictors of suicidal ideation. Discussion: The mother plays the most important role in the suicidal ideation of adolescents; since according to their parental style they are the most predicted. Key words: Styles of parental socialization, suicidal ideation, adolescents.

METHODS: Home visits were made and information was collected regarding the risk factors for malnutrition. RESULTS: The prevalence of chronic malnutrition was 41.6% according to Gomez, 36.6% according to Waterlow, and 17.6% according to WHO. Risk factors for malnutrition, according to the weight-for-age index, included birthweight, presence of upper respiratory tract infections, number of pregnancies, number of births, maternal body mass index, birthplace of father, and home building material; according to the weight-for-height index, they included birthweight and maternal age at the time of birth; and according to the height-for-age index, they included the number of pre-natal medical visits, birthweight, maternal height, maternal body mass index, father's employment being unregistered, and maternal birthplace. An instrument for identifying children at risk of malnutrition was devised from these major risk factors for future malnutrition, which may then be applied to newly-born children.

Resumen
This study aimed to examine the relationship between maternal health and good quality of life in an attempt to understand the years between 2005 and 2011. Data from the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys 2005 and 2011 were used. Bivariate, Camer-V, chi-square and logistic regression analyses were used to determine the relative contribution of the predictor variables. The hypotheses tested in this study were that gender, wealth quintile, type of place of residence and region are highly significant with women’s education and work status. Females’ expected age (adjusted odds ratio = AOR) for some school training has dropped in 2011 from 0.678 to 0.255 for the age group 25–34, but male expected age (AOR) for some school has increased in 2011 from 0.784 to 2.274. The age of the respondent, age at first cohabitation and socio-economic variables were positively associated with having visited health facilities in the last 12 months and being visited by a family planning worker.

Resumen
This study examined the longitudinal effects of media usage by early school-age children and of maternal parenting stress on children’s school adjustment. The study focused on the mediating effect of executive function difficulty. Longitudinal data to examine the hypothetical model were drawn from the eighth (2015) through tenth (2017) waves of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) collected by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE). A total of 581 children (293 boys and 288 girls) and their mothers were included. Confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation model, and bootstrapping analysis were applied using SPSS 25.0 and Amos 26.0. The results are as follows. First, no significant correlation was found between early school-age children’s media usage and maternal parenting stress. Second, neither media usage by early school-age children nor maternal parenting stress were found to directly affect children’s school adjustment. Third, media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress were shown to indirectly affect children’s school adjustment via executive function difficulties. In other words, higher levels of media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress during the first grade lead to greater executive function difficulties after a year, which, in turn, lead to a lower level of school adjustment in the third grade. This study indicates the need to develop practical support for the psychological wellbeing of mothers while they are performing their role as a parent and for children in maintaining suitable levels of media usage during early childhood.

Resumen
In facing the industrial 4.0 era, adolescents, especially high school students, need to complement their knowledge and skills learnt from school with behaviors that can help their career journey, namely the career exploration behavior (CEB). Referring to the triadic reciprocal determinism theory and gender role in Indonesian culture, this study aimed to examine the effect of parenting styles and gender on CEB. Specifically, this study examined the effect of paternal and maternal parenting styles on CEB in adolescent and compared its effect on boys and girls. Participants in this study were 427 boys and 397 girls with an average age of 17 from nine high schools. Career Exploration Survey and Parental Authority Questionnaire were used to assess participants’ CEB, and paternal and maternal parenting styles. Regression analysis showed different patterns effect of paternal and maternal parenting styles on CEB between boys and girls. For boys, parenting that was found to improve CEB were paternal authoritative parenting and maternal authoritarian parenting, while for girls, parenting that was found to improve CEB were paternal authoritarian parenting and maternal authoritative parenting. These results indicated that boys and girls need different parenting factors from father and mother. Limitation and suggestion are discussed.

Resumen
Mothers play a key role in ensuring their children’s healthy life. This study aimed to identify the maternal factors affecting problematic smartphone use in children. We adopted a cross-sectional descriptive design using structured questionnaires. Participants were fourth to sixth grade elementary school students in Korea (n = 184). The following maternal factors were evaluated: maternal mediation, children’s perception of mothers’ smartphone use, mother–child communication, and parenting style. Data regarding maternal factors’ effect on problematic smartphone use were analyzed by computing descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis using SPSS Win 27.0. The results show that the maternal factors that influenced problematic smartphone use in children were maternal control over smartphone usage (odds ratio (OR) = 5.10, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.33–19.60), smartphone usage time for social network service (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.10–2.01), and problematic mother–child communication (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.00–1.14). Therefore, to promote appropriate smartphone use among school children, it is necessary to develop an intervention comprising maternal supervision of their children’s smartphones, guidance provision for social network service usage, and strategies for the reinforcement of positive mother–child communication.

Resumen
AbstractObjectiveParental body image dissatisfaction (BID) is associated with children’s weight in cross-sectional studies; however, it is unknown whether BID predicts development of adiposity. The objective of the present study was to investigate the associations between maternal dissatisfaction with her or her child’s body and children’s BMI trajectories.DesignLongitudinal study. Maternal dissatisfaction (BID) with her and her child’s body was calculated based on ratings of Stunkard scales obtained at recruitment, as current minus desired body image. Children’s height and weight were measured at baseline and annually for a median of 2·5 years. Mixed-effects models with restricted cubic splines were used to construct sex- and weight-specific BMI-for-age curves according to maternal BID levels.SettingPublic primary schools in Bogotá, Colombia.SubjectsChildren (n 1523) aged 5–12 years and their mothers.ResultsAfter multivariable adjustment, heavy boys and thin girls whose mothers desired a thinner child gained an estimated 1·7 kg/m2 more BMI (P=0·04) and 2·4 kg/m2 less BMI (P=0·004), respectively, between the age 6 and 14 years, than children of mothers without BID. Normal-weight boys whose mothers desired a thinner child’s body gained an estimated 1·8 kg/m2 less BMI than normal-weight boys of mothers without BID (P=0·02). Maternal BID with herself was positively related to children’s BMI gain during follow-up.ConclusionsMaternal BID is associated with child’s BMI trajectories in a sex- and weight-specific manner.

Resumen
AbstractUsing longitudinal data, a subsample of 37 high-risk children whose mothers were observed to be intrusive in their interactions with their 6-month-old infants in feeding and play situations were compared to 145 children from the same environmental risk sample. The children of mothers judged to be intrusive were doing poorly academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally in first and second grades. The findings were robust even after covarying out the effects of a maternal social/affective interaction factor, IQ, and stressful life events experienced by the family. The relation between an intrusive style of caretaking in infancy and child maladaptation in the early school years is viewed as support for a mutual regulation model of social engagement.
