Resumen
Substantial differences were found between the 5% top achievers in science and the remaining 95% 9th and 12th grade students. While girls constitute 55% of the 9th grade population only 18% of the high achievers are girls, a ratio of approximately 1:3. The corresponding ratio in the 12th grade was 1:8, 1:5, 1:2 and 3:4 for physics, non-science, chemistry and biology majors respectively. A typical profile of a higher achiever is: A small family. Parents with more formal education holding more science related careers, and more books at home. School science grades are relatively high. Science and mathematics are liked more than other school subjects. Intends to study science in the university and aspires for a science related career. The gaps between the top % and the rest in biology and physics are larger than in chemistry and earth science. The high achievers excel more in tasks which require higher cognitive abilities and which are outside their area of specialization. Their attitudes toward science learning are considerably more positive. Finally, they exhibit substantially higher preference for questioning and lower preference for rote memorization.

Resumen
Abstract A loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedling grade study was established in January 1987 on a Coastal Plain site at Bellville, Georgia. The factorial study involved three seedling grades (Wakeley's Grade 1, 2, and 3) and three half-sib families (#5, 25, 56). Trees were measured at ages 8 and 13 yr. Both family and seedling grade affected survival, height, and diameter at age 8 yr. Survival among families varied by as much as 3 percentage points while there was a 10 percentage point difference between Grade 1 and Grade 2 seedlings. Only family was related to height and diameter at age 13. Volume gains from planting Grade 1 seedlings instead of Grade 3 seedlings varied by family but there were no significant interactions between family and seedling grade. Differences in height among families and among seedling grades decreased over time. At age 8, there was a 5.3 ft difference between the tallest and shortest family but by age 13, the difference declined to 3.7 ft.Overall, planting family 56 instead of family 25 resulted in an additional 645 ft3/ac by age 13. Planting Grade 1 seedlings instead of Grade 3 seedlings produced an additional 303 ft3/ac. Per acre volume differences among families were greater at age 13 than at age 8. In contrast, differences among seedling grades were about the same at age 8 and 13 yr. The overall mean annual increment (MAI) for this study was 207 ft3/ac/yr. In comparison, the MAI for Grade 1 seedlings of family 56 was 239 ft3/ac/yr. South. J. Appl. For. 26(3):153–158.

Resumen
Abstract Past research has used detailed measurements of various growth characteristics to determine seedling grades and quality of northern red oak nursery stock. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a visual grading process, similar to those found in commercial nursery operations, to distinguish high quality seedlings. Northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) seedlings were grown for 1 yr at two state nurseries and visually separated into three grades (cull, good, or premium) according to root and shoot characteristics. Approximately 64% of the seedlings grown at each nursery were judged to be of unacceptable size for successful field regeneration. Number of first-order lateral roots (FOLR), height, and root collar diameter (RCD) were measured for seedlings in the good and premium grades. Premium grade seedlings were significantly larger than the good grade seedlings for both nurseries. Phenotypic correlations of growth traits were strongest between number of FOLR and RCD. The results demonstrate that high quality nursery stock can be visually selected into two distinguishable grades. South. J. Appl. For. 24(2):93-97.

Resumen
Abstract Multivariate regression models were developed to predict green board-foot yields for the common factory-lumber grades processed from sugar maple and basswood factory grade logs. These models use the standard log measurements of grade, scaling diameter, log length, and proportion of scaling defect. Any combination of lumber grades (such as 1 Common and Better) or total yield can be predicted with these models. The coefficients presented here can be used in computer programs related to sawmill simulations, economic modeling, or log-yard inventory systems. North. J. Appl. For. 4:154-157, Sept. 1987.

Resumen
Experimental inquiry-oriented science labs can be designed to have students regulate their own learning and decide when they leave class or to have the teacher regulate student learning and determine when they leave class. In this study, grades were examined relative to student exit times in a student-regulated class design. Preliminary interviews revealed four motivation strategies likely to differentially influence exit times and grades: proficiency, grade-target-A, grade-target-C, and time-limited. Students were categorized into the four groups of motivation strategies with a survey. Twenty teaching assistants teaching three lab sections each taught the stand-alone lab class. Students recorded the time they left class each week. Grades were determined as the overall percentage of points a student received in class. Results of the survey showed that the four motivation strategies were well represented in the student population, and two additional strategies were also frequently seen: a hybrid-1 between proficiency and grade-target-A, and a hybrid-2 between time-limited and grade-target-C. Grades were significantly higher for grade-target-A and hybrid-1 students, followed by time-limited, proficiency, grade-target-C, and hybrid 2. Time spent in class was not significantly different among categories. Students who chose to stay in class longer had significantly higher grades. If a grade is the goal, these results support the idea of a teacher-controlled exit time for the students in these inquiry-oriented labs. Implications are discussed.

Resumen
Biweekly Grade A and manufacturing grade herd milk samples were collected from April 1, 1985, to March 31, 1986, from 203 herds in the Sioux Falls, SD, area and were analyzed to compare composition. The average herd milk composition was 3.70% fat, 3.24% protein, 4.80% lactose, 0.63% ash, 8.67% solids-not-fat (SNF), and 12.37% total solids (TS). Grade A milk had higher % lactose (4.83 and 4.76), % SNF (8.70 and 8.61), and % TS (12.41 and 12.30) than manufacturing grade milk. These compositional differences between grades were consistent throughout the year. Grade A milk has more value in the production of dried dairy products (nonfat dry milk and whey powders) and ice cream than manufacturing grade milk due to its higher lactose and SNF content. New milk pricing plans for protein and other constituents should consider compositional differences (lactose, SNF and TS) that exist between grade A and manufacturing grade herd milk before implementing them.

Resumen
Abstract A case study was conducted in a 50-yr-old bottomland oak stand in central Alabama to investigate the relationship between epicormic branches and lumber grade and value in willow oak (Quercus phellos L.). The stand had been thinned from below 7–10 yr earlier, resulting in a wide variety of epicormic branch conditions on the residual trees. A sample of 41 willow oak trees was selected before the stand was clearcut in late 1991. All merchantable logs in each tree were graded prior to felling. Average dbh of sampled trees was 19.1 in. Each tree averaged 9.5 epicormic branches on the sawlog portion of the bole. From these 41 trees, a random sample of 57 logs (31 butt logs and 26 upper logs) was shipped to a sawmill where they were sawn into lumber and graded. Epicormic branching had a large detrimental effect on log grade of individual trees. In general, as few as five epicormic branches somewhat evenly distributed on a 16 ft log was enough to cause a reduction in log grade. More importantly, defects caused by epicormic branches had a serious effect on lumber grade, particularly in the higher grades. Over 50% of the lumber volume that would have been graded as either First and Seconds or Select in the absence of epicormic branches was downgraded to No. 1 Common or below due to defects caused by epicormic branches. Based on lumber prices prevailing at the time of the study, defects caused by epicormic branches resulted in a 13% reduction in the value of the lumber produced in the final harvest. South. J. Appl. Resumen
Abstract The currently available technology of Makhana processing is not only indigenous and manual but also cumbersome and painstaking. The process involves handling of hot roasted seeds which require two to three laborers to process 8–9 kg of popped Makhana per day. With the view to mechanize the unit operation involved in Makhana processing, grading and roasting machine were designed and developed. Grader was developed based on engineering properties of Makhana while the roaster was designed based on preliminary experiments for Makhana, i.e. shell breaking force at different temperatures and for varying residence time. The grader performed best at feed rate of 20 kg/h with grading effectiveness of 0.99, 0.955 and 0.95 for grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 Makhana seeds respectively. The developed roasting machine worked satisfactorily with 100% popping efficiency at machine capacity around 23.0 kg/h. The residence time of seeds in the roaster was 2.6 min and the average temperature of roasted seeds of grade 1, grade 2, grade 3 was found to be 271.33°C, 281.1°C and 280.7°C respectively.

One of some factors that influences it is the selection of learning resource that does not explain science concept for students. This research is conducted to know the influence of the use of science literacy-based teaching material based on the improvement of fourth grade students’ science achievement. This research is a quantitative research that uses an experimental method. This research is conducted at two elementary schools in Gunungpati, Semarang. The subjects of this research are 46 fourth grade students. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test to know the students’ score. This research shows that pre-test mean score is 39.935 and the post-test 1 mean score is 66.891. Meanwhile, t-tests show significance 0.000 (<0.05) meaning that there is the difference between pre-test and post-test. Therefore, there is influence on the use of science literacy-based teaching material based on fourth grade students’ science achievement.

Resumen
Visual processes in Grade 1 were examined for their predictive influences in nonalphanumeric and alphanumeric rapid naming (RAN) in 51 poor early and 69 typical readers. In a lagged design, children were followed longitudinally from Grade 1 to Grade 3 over 5 testing occasions. RAN outcomes in early Grade 2 were predicted by speeded and nonspeeded visual processing measures, after controlling for initial (Grade 1) RAN, matrix reasoning, phonological awareness, and word decoding abilities. A predictive influence of backward visual masking—a speeded visual discrimination task—was found for nonalphanumeric RAN in early Grade 2 but not for alphanumeric RAN or subsequent RAN ability in Grades 2 and 3. A nonspeeded predictor involving controlled visual attention accounted for significant variance in early Grade 2 RAN in the poor early reader group. Results are discussed in relation to Wolf, Bowers, and Biddle’s conceptualization of rapid naming—in particular, on the roles of visual processes in speeded low and nonspeeded high spatial frequency visual information in predicting RAN.

Resumen
Science career expectations can be affected by personal science beliefs and social supports. Framed in Expectancy-Value Models, this research studied the influence of science beliefs (science interest belief, self-efficacy belief and value belief) and social supports (parents and teachers) on students’ science career expectations by the survey of 798 10th grade students. Based on Structural Equation Model, it was found that: 1) science interest belief, self-efficacy belief, value belief and parents’ support can directly predict students' expectations of science careers; 2) the effect of student’s perception from parents and teachers support on science choice preferences and career engagement are mediated through the effects on students’ interest, self-efficacy and value in science. Therefore, teachers and parents should enhance students’ science beliefs and identity for the improvement of their science career expectations. Keywords: influencing factors, science career expectations, Structural Equation Model, 10th grade students.

Resumen
This study examined the relationship between algebraic competences and emotional intelligence offirst yearBachelor of Science in mathematics and science education students at Copperbelt University in Zambia. All (143) first year Bachelor of Science in mathematics and science education students, in 2016, were purposively selected for the study. The study was motivated by evidence that students generally do not perform well in their first year university mathematics examinations despite the students having very good university entry grades in secondary school mathematics. This poor academic performance may be due to many factors. However, this study identified and focused on emotional intelligence as one such factor. Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to identify, assess and manage the emotions of one’s self, of others and of groups. It is argued that emotional intelligence represents an ability to reason with emotions and to use emotions to facilitate thought. On the other hand, Algebra was chosen as the focus of the study because of its centrality to the whole offirst yearuniversity mathematics content. Algebra is found in all branches of mathematics directly or indirectly. Therefore, the study explored the algebraic competences of the first year students and examined possible relationships with their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence was measured using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT), and algebraic competences were measured through a Grade 12 level algebra achievement test and a university level algebra achievement test constructed by the researcher. Data were analysed using non-parametric statistical techniques: Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation (rho) and the Mann-Whitney U Test. Results showed that there is a significant positive correlation between Grade 12 level andfirst yearuniversity level algebraic competences. Results also showed that there is no significant relationship between students’ algebraic competences and their emotional intelligence. Furthermore, the study reviewed that female students have higher levels of emotional intelligence than their male counterparts.Published online: 30 November 2017

Resumen
The honey production is one of the most important agriculture branches of Ukraine. Since the beginning of 2000 year, honey becomes one of the first products of agriculture production that was allowed to export from Ukraine to the EU countries. The present study aims to evaluate microbial composition of honey of higher and first grades from south of Ukraine, which differ in water, sugar content and acidity. The correlation beetween physicochemical properties, botanical origin and microbial composition of honey were investigated. Total aerobic count (TAC), total count of fungi (TFC) and yeast (TYC), number of sporeforming anaerobes (SFA), Bacillus cereus and Clostridium botulinus were determined. Plate dilution method with specific cultural mediums and incubation conditions was used for indication and identification of microorganisms as well for quantitative CFU count determination in 1g of honey. The results indicated that the value of TAC was from 1.4 ±0.1 x 102 to 3.7 ±0.5 x 102 CFU.g-1 in higher grade honey and from 2.1 ±0.3 x 102 to 4.6 ±0.4 x 102 CFU.g-1 in first grade honey. Average amounts of fungi and yest in the first grade honey were more than in higher grade honey and amounted 15.±0.9 CFU.g-1, 6.48 ±0.7 CFU.g-1 and 17.98 ±1.2 CFU.g-1, 8.04 ±0.8 CFU.g-1 respectively. Also it was found that, 25.8% and 37.1% of higher and first grade honey samples had sporeforming anaerobes. The more of samples with Bacillus cereus and Clostridium botulinum were among samples of first-grade honey samples. In addition, we have determined that, samples of buckwheat honey and honey from fodder crops of both grades were more contaminated with all microorganisms than samples of sunflower honey and honey from fruit and non-fruit trees. Results of this work has revealed the relationship between the number of different groups and species of microorganisms in higher and first grade honey from south of Ukraine and its physicochemical properties and botanical origin. Our research could help to substantiate the sources of contamination of honey and confirm the existing findings of scientists about the direct proportional dependence of the content of microorganisms in honey, depending on its moisture content, acidity and sugars.

Resumen
Abstract Information on the quality of logs in standing trees can aid resource managers and landowners in maximizing returns from timber harvests. However, little is published about the grade of logs in yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) stands. In this study, discriminant analysis was used to develop classification functions to predict USDA Forest Service Log Grades for standing yellow-poplar trees in eastern Kentucky. The variables used to predict log grade are those commonly collected during forest inventory. This analysis indicates the importance of log position, merchantable height, and tree grade to log grade determination. The classification functions developed from the modeling data set correctly classified 80.9% of the log grades in a validation data set. These results provide a framework to resource managers and landowners for assessing yellow-poplar log quality in standing trees. South. J. Appl. For. 27(1):61–65.

Resumen
The application of digital image analysis for objective measurement of grain uniformity in commercial samples of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat was investigated. Official railcar-unloading (carlot) and vessel-loading (cargo) samples of three grades (Nos. 1, 2 and 3) of CWRS wheat were analyzed for 16 kernel-size, shape and brightness features that were automatically computed from digital images acquired in reflected light. Based on a subsample of 400 kernels for each graded sample, coefficient of variation (CV) data were used to evaluate the influence of grading and bulk handling on the uniformity of carlot and cargo shipments. A significant and progressive decrease in sample uniformity for No. 2 and No. 3 carlot samples, compared with No. 1, was observed for all computed kernel features. Averaged over all features, the decreases in uniformity in carlot samples were 13.4 and 13.7% with grade lowering from No. 1 to No. 2 and from No. 2 to No. 3, respectively. For cargo samples, an analogous effect was found as the grade dropped from No. 2 to No. 3 only. There was essentially no measurable difference in the level of uniformity, averaged over all kernel features, between No. 1 and No. 2 cargo samples, which were extremely uniform, as indicated by CV values of 1.27 and 1.25%, respectively. The effect of the bulk handling system was evidenced by a substantial improvement in uniformity of cargo samples compared with carlot samples. Averaged over all features, CV values for cargo samples were lower than CV values for corresponding carlots by 58, 63 and 64% for grade Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Key words: Wheat grading, digital image analysis, uniformity measurement

Resumen
To evaluate the relationship between IPP, age, prostate volume, uroflowmetry result, PSA, and IPSS. We retrospectively studied 162 patients presenting with LUTS suggestive of BPH between January 2012 and December 2014, analyzing age, IPP, pressure flow study, prostate volume, PSA, and International Prostate Symptom Score. IPP was classified into three stages: grade 1 (≤5 mm), grade 2 (5 mm < IPP ≤ 10 mm), and grade 3 (>10 mm). Statistical analysis included Kruskall-Wallis with Mann-Whitney as post hoc analysis and Spearman’s correlation coefficients were performed. The mean age was 67±7.7 years old. Achieved IPP values were the following: grade 1–40 (24.7%), grade 2–60 (37%), and grade 3–62 (38.3%). Results show statistically significant difference between IPP grades Qmax, PVR, and PV (p ≤ 0.05). Mean difference between IPP groups were significant using Mann-Whitney post hoc test for Qmax, PVR, and PV between IPP group 1 and 2, PV between IPP group 1 and 3, and Qmax, PVR, and PV between IPP group 2 and 3. Spearman’s correlations coefficient show positive correlation between IPP and PV (r = 0.506, p ≤ 0.05), PVR (r = 0.341, p ≤ 0.05), and PSA (r = 0.253, p ≤ 0.05). Intravesical prostate protrusion measured through abdominal ultrasound are a non-invasive and accessible method that significantly correlates with peak flow rate (Qmax), prostate volume, post void residue, and prostate specific antigen.
