Resumen
In this thesis, I consider the problem of relating science and religion, and search for a solution that will provide a useful model both for individual believers as well as professional scientists and theologians. In this search, I take up the works of three of the most influential thinkers to write on the subject: Andrew Dickson White, Alfred North Whitehead, and Ian G. Barbour. I survey each of their texts and evaluate the philosophy of science and religion that they present. In the end, I conclude that the version of process philosophy adopted by Ian Barbour offers the most promising solution to the problem of relating science and religion.

Resumen
One Project - Three Parts My thesis is of an investigative character, and the focus has not been to end up with a result that is a building, but rather a collected material from an ongoing discussion on collective form, through the process of sketching on a building. I see the whole project as divided into three different parts, that are equally important. Theory The theoretical context has its basis in theory that tries move away from the singular. I have particularly studied Fumihiko Makis “Investigations of Collective Form” and parts of Stan Allens writings on “Field Conditions”, and these texts have been generators for the project. Theory also regards texts and discussion that I have assimilated during the work, as well as my own theoretical reflections. Reading, writing and discussing are essentail parts of the project and has continuously affected  the work. House I have chosen to focus on, and challenge, our notion of privacy and dwelling, and investigate in how we can live more collectively in our daily lives. I have sketched intuitively in physical models, and later on tried to push these free studies into a more complete building.  The context is Scandinavia today, and I have taken advantage of a site in Oslo to exemplify a situation while developing the house. Process Parallell to theorizing and sketching I have kept a journal documenting the process. After finishing a model or sketch I have tried to evaluate it by discussing and writing about it, and stating how to move on from there. I never intended to stop the process at a certain date, but to continue the investigation as long as I could. This is once again another, quite outzoomed, context, that has to do with the architectural profession and how we can work, produce knowledge and investigate in different societal issues. Parts from the journal, that have been significant for the development of the house, are presented in this book.

Resumen
This is an early access article.
We investigated the role of subjective factors in the information search process. Forty eight participants each conducted six web searches in a controlled setting. We examined relationships between subjective factors (happiness levels, satisfaction with and confidence in the search results, feeling lost during search, familiarity with and interest in the search topic, estimation of task difficulty), and objective factors (search behavior, search outcomes and search task characteristics). Data analysis was conducted using a multivariate statistical test (Canonical Correlations Analysis). The findings confirmed existence of several relationships suggested by prior research, including relationships between objective search task difficulty and the perception of task difficulty; between subjective states and search behaviors and outcomes. One of the original findings suggests that higher happiness levels before the search and during the search correlate with better feelings after the search, but also correlates with worse search outcomes and lower satisfaction, suggesting that, perhaps, it pays off to feel some â painâ during the search in order to â gainâ quality outcomes.

Resumen
This thesis presents a method to deploy and lookup applications and devices based on a geographical location. The proposed solution is a combination of two existing technologies, where the first one is a geocode system to encode latitude and longitude coordinates, and the second one is a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) where values are stored and accessed with a $<$key, value$>$ pair. The purpose of this work is to be able to search a specific location for the closest device that solves the user needs, such as finding an Internet of Things (IoT) device. The thesis covers a method for searching by iterating key-value pairs in the DHT and expanding the area to find the devices further away. The search is performed using two main algorithm implementations LayerExpand and SpiralBoxExpand, to scan the area around where the user started the search. LayerExpand and SpiralBoxExpand are tested and evaluated in comparison to each other. The comparison results are presented in the form of plots where both of the functions are shown together. The function analysis results show how the size of the DHT, the number of users, and size of the search area affects the performance of the searches.

Resumen
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 28-31, 1996 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California
The challenge being faced today in the Department of Defense is to find ways to improve the systems acquisition process. One area needing improvement is to eliminate surprises in unexpected test data which add cost and time to developing the system. This amounts to eliminating errors in all phases of a system’s lifecycle. In a perfect world, the ideal systems acquisition process would result in a perfect system. Flawless testing of a perfect system would result in predicted test results 100% of the time. However, such close fidelity between predicted behavior and real behavior has never occurred. Until this ideal level of boredom in testing occurs, testing will remain a critical part of the acquisition process. Given the indispensability of testing, the goal to reduce the cost of flight tests is well worth pursuing. Reducing test cost equates to reducing open air test hours, our most costly budget item. It also means planning, implementing and controlling test cycles more efficiently. We are working on methods to set up test missions faster, and analyze, evaluate, and report on the test data more quickly, including unexpected results. This paper explores the moving focus concept, one method that shows promise in our pursuit of the goal of reducing test costs. The moving focus concept permits testers to change the data they collect and view during a test, interactively, in real-time. This allows testers who are receiving unexpected test results to change measurement subsets and explore the problem or pursue other test scenarios.

Resumen
Metacognitive knowledge is a critical piece of the information literacy puzzle. In a world of exploding information and communications possibilities, the difficulty for users of information systems and services may not lie in finding information but in filtering and integrating it into a cohesive whole. To do this, they must be able to make sense of it, an act that assumes knowledge about one’s own information needs, goals and abilities. This type of self-knowledge - called metacognitive knowledge - has three basic components: knowledge of one’s self, knowledge of the nature of a cognitive task in relation to one’s own cognitive abilities, and knowledge of how and when to effectively use cognitive strategies to complete a cognitive task. Such knowledge, when used in information seeking, may help users to solve complex information problems. There is perhaps no other user group who could benefit more from the development of metacognitive knowledge than adolescents, aged 16 to 18. On the cusp of adulthood, they face many of the complex information problems of adults, but as “novice adults” their depth of knowledge on most topics may be shallow simply because they have only experienced life for a handful of years. This study used naturalistic research methods to investigate the metacognitive knowledge of adolescents as they searched for, selected and used information for a school-based, inquiry project, within the framework of Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process (ISP). It was conducted over a four-month period in a Montreal-area CEGEP (post-secondary educational institutions in Quebec). The participants were students in their first year of CEGEP (equivalent to grade 12). Ten participants, ranging in age from 16 to 18, each kept a written or audio journal in which they recorded their thoughts, feelings, actions, and self-prompting questions, participated in four interviews, three conducted by telephone and one face-to-face, and completed a visualizing ex
Innovation is at the heart of many firms’ operations and it is a key determinant of firm performance. Understanding how to improve innovation success is critical for organisations to survive in fast moving modern markets. To contribute to our understanding of successful innovation, I present three original research projects on stakeholder involvement and the search process. Specifically, I study customer involvement in crowdfunded innovation projects, involvement of non-R&D employees in corporate innovation, and component recombination during the search process. In the first part of this thesis, I study the involvement of customers in crowdfunded innovation projects. Entrepreneurs increasingly use crowdfunding to finance innovation projects through direct customer investments. The existing literature has predominantly studied factors driving crowd investments and whether the crowd makes rational funding decisions. I show that entrepreneurs also benefit from customer involvement during crowdfunding campaigns, as the customers turn investors and provide some of the support usually received from institutional investors. In the second part, I study the involvement of regular employees in organisational innovation projects (“employee innovation”). The previous literature has shown that employee innovation is an important driver of competitive advantage. I show how and when serendipitous intrafirm mobility (within the firm) increases employee innovation through learning and the integration of disparate knowledge. In the third part, I study the recombination of new and existing components during the search process for new products. I use a new computational method to decompose the descriptions of a large set of consumer products into components. I then show that certain component recombinations predict product success.

Resumen
Unemployment among formerly incarcerated citizens is a complex problem that continues to grow. Previous reentry studies describe the collateral effects of incarceration on employment from the perspective of formerly incarcerated individuals, yet little academic research exists regarding reentry practitioners' perceptions of constraints during the job search process. Using Goldratt's theory of constraints as the foundation, the purpose of this case study of reentry and employment in a mid-Atlantic state was to explore from the perspective of practitioners, the types of constraints individuals with criminal records face during the job search process, the most difficult phase of the job search process, and recommendations on improving employment outcomes. Data for this study were obtained from 20 reentry professionals in Maryland, who completed an online, open-ended response survey. Data were inductively coded and subjected to thematic analysis procedure. The results showed that practitioners perceived the background check to be the most difficult phase in the job search process, and that external and environmental constraints such as employer bias and social stigma prevent individuals with criminal records from securing job offers. The results also showed that reentry professionals support automatic record expungement, record shielding, employer partnerships, and employment programming that provides job leads, resume building, and mock interview assistance. The positive social change implications stemming from this study include policy recommendations to policy makers to include centralizing and expanding the location of statewide employment centers, record shielding under the Second Chance Act, and fair education access through Ban-the Box for state colleges.

Resumen
This study examines adolescent students at an American international school and observes student use of social networking programs as well as physical actions in the search process. The study specifically observed multitasking behavior and organizational skills among students, as well as linkages made through social networking sites. Student observations, student interviews, analysis of Facebook entries, and a survey on multitasking yielded rich data. Students appear to be far more organized than previously suggested in the literature, and in this study, the organization proved to be largely self-taught. Students used their social networks to build a kind of group expertise that compensated for their youthful naivety. Students exhibited self-control within the search to the degree that they could focus on what they wanted to find, and they used heuristics—mental shortcuts—to achieve what they needed. Searches also suggest creativity in that students were flexible in their search methods and used a number of tools to gather information. Students could balance the needs of the academic or imposed search with their own online lives, meaning that they made compensations for social media and media multitasking when it was deemed necessary.

Resumen
Documenting business processes using process models is common practice in many organizations. However, not all process information is best captured in process models. Hence, many organizations complement these models with textual descriptions that specify additional details. The problem with this supplementary use of textual descriptions is that existing techniques for automatically searching process repositories are limited to process models. They are not capable of taking the information from textual descriptions into account and, therefore, provide incomplete search results. In this paper, we address this problem and propose a technique that is capable of searching textual as well as model-based process descriptions. It automatically extracts activity-related and behavioral information from both descriptions types and stores it in a unified data format. An evaluation with a large Austrian bank demonstrates that the additional consideration of textual descriptions allows us to identify more relevant processes from a repository.

Anilkumar, A. K. "Application Of Controlled Random Search Optimization Technique In MMLE With Process Noise". Thesis, Indian Institute of Science, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2005/232.

Texto completo
Resumen
Generally in most of the applications of estimation theory using the Method of Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MMLE) to dynamical systems one deals with a situation where only the measurement noise alone is present. However in many present day applications where modeling errors and random state noise input conditions occur it has become necessary for MMLE to handle measurement noise as well as process noise. The numerical algorithms accounting for both measurement and process noise require significantly an order of magnitude higher computer time and memory. Further more, implementation difficulties and convergence problems are often encountered. Here one has to estimate the quantities namely, the initial state error covariance matrix Po, measurement noise covariance matrix R, the process noise covariance matrix Q and the system parameter 0 and the present work deals with the above. Since the above problem is fairly involved we need to have a good reference solution. For this purpose we utilize the approach and results of Gemson who considered the above problem via the extended Kalman filter (EKF) route to compare the present results from the MMLE route. The EKF uses the unknown parameters as additional states unlike in MMLE which uses only the system states. Chapter 1 provides a brief historical perspective followed by parameter identification in the presence of process and measurement noises. The earlier formulations such as natural, innovation, combined, and adaptive approaches are discussed. Chapter 2 deals with the heuristic adaptive tuning of the Kalman filter parameters for the matrices Q and R by Myers and Tapley originally developed for state estimation problems involving satellite orbit estimation. It turns out that for parameter estimation problems apart from the above matrices even the choice of the initial covariance matrix Po is crucial for obtaining proper parameter estimates with a finite amount of data and for this purpose the inverse of the information matrix for Po is used. This is followed by a description of the original Controlled Random Search (CRS) of Price and its variant as implemented and used in the present work to estimate or tune Q, R, and 0 which is the aim of the present work. The above help the reader to appreciate the setting under which the present study has been carried out. Chapter 3 presents the results and the analysis of the estimation procedure adopted with respect to a specific case study of the lateral dynamics of an aircraft involving 15 unknown parameters. The reference results for the present work are the ones based on the approach of Gemson and Ananthasayanam (1998). The present work proceeds in two phases. In the first case (i) the EKF estimates for Po, Q, and R are used to obtain 0 and in the second case (ii) the estimate of Po and Q together with a reasonable choice of R are utilized to obtain 0 from the CRS algorithm. Thus one is able to assess the capability of the CRS to estimate only the unknown parameters. The next Chapter 4 presents the results of utilizing the CRS algorithm with R based on a reasonable choice and for Po from the inverse of the information matrix to estimate both Q and 0. This brings out the efficiency of MMLE with CRS algorithm in the estimation of unknown process noise characteristics and unknown parameters. Thus it demonstratesthofcdifficult Q can be estimated using CRS technique without the attendant difficulties of the earlier MMLE formulations in dealing with process noise. Chapter 5 discusses the - implementation of CRS to estimate the unknown measurement noise covariance matrix R together with the unknown 0 by utilizing the values of Po and Q obtained through EKF route. The effect of variation of R in the parameter estimation procedure is also highlighted in This Chapter. This Chapter explores the importance of Po in the estimation procedure. It establishes the importance of Po though most of the earlier works do not appear to have recognized such a feature. It turned out that the CRS algorithm does not converge when some arbitrary value of Po is chosen. It has to be necessarily obtained from a scouting pass of the EKF. Some sensitivity studies based on variations of Po shows its importance. Further studies shows the sequence of updates, the random nature of process and measurement noise effects, the deterministic nature of the parameter, play a critical role in the convergence of the algorithm. The last Chapter 6 presents the conclusions from the present work and suggestions for further work.

Resumen
In this thesis, the author explored an alternative way of composing contemporary western art music, being inspired by thoughts regarding post-genre. The composition method incorporated the use of the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software Cubase. Musical gestures were recorded with two musicians which where used as samples in the DAW to compose the piece Lines. The role of the score was shifted by moving it’s realisation to after the aural result was completed. The process was inspiring and was perceived to work well for a textural piece of music. Using a DAW when composing contemporary western art music is something that could be explored by classically trained composers in favour of working solely in a notation software. The result was the digitally made recording of Lines and two scores; one aimed to reproduce the recorded version (where only violin and violoncello where used) and another where adjustments where made, mainly in the instrumentation, to facilitate live performances by string orchestras.

Resumen
This thesis focuses on comparing four different layouts of the same process model diagram in terms of user understanding and appreciation. When the model diagram is aligned around the shortest path from start to goal, it represents the version of a process where everything goes as planned. By comparing the shortes t path layout to other layouts (versions of the process), the aim was to investigate if users found it easier to understand and more visually appealing. The layouts compared were an artistic layout, where the nodes and edges were placed in anequidistant and harmonious structure. Secondly, a max length horizontallay out that aligned the process model’s flow of information to follow the longest path from start to goal. Lastly, a base line layout where the nodes and edges were drawn more at random without following any particular structure. By comparing qualitative data from users to measure their appreciation, as well as quantitative data from their response time and accuracy, the primary goal was to see if the min length shortest path layout would increase the user’s understanding and appreciation, compared to the baseline layout. To realign the base layout into a shortest path layout, an implementation of the A* search algorithm with Euclidean distance heuristics was used. A user study with 35 participants showed a statistically significant difference in performance between the layout modified by the algorithm, and the base line layout. User response time and accuracy improved by more than what can be explained by random chance, suggesting that the implementation can be used for said purpose. The max length layout performed even better, and the best performing layout was the artistic.

Resumen
A great deal of time, money, and effort can be expended on hiring community college presidents without any assurance that they will remain in their new positions a substantial amount of time. Building on decades of literature reporting the continuing decrease of presidential longevity, this study examined the methods most successful in selecting presidents with relatively greater longevity and what relationship exists between the type of presidential search used and the length of tenure. An original 18-question survey was e-mailed to 904 community college and two-year institution presidents to capture information about both current and previous presidencies. Participants returned 224 valid responses for a response rate of 24.8%. Results of a generalized linear model (GLM) yielded a statistically significant result showing a positive relationship between the variable Q7STDT1(type of presidential searches in current position) and length of tenure of selected candidates (F = 3.41, p = .006).No significant relationship was found between the selection process used in the immediately previous presidential positions and selected candidates’ longevity in those positions. Information from this study can be used to decide what types of selection process should be used and to indicate further topics of inquiry in this area.

Resumen
Searching for food recipes online is a common task for many people in an increasingly digitalised society. Sweden has, as many countries, local recipes, seasonal products, cultural dinners and measurement and weight standards that can differ from other coun- tries. However general searches for Swedish recipes at common search engines can pose several difficulties. For example that users can’t filter the search results by recipes and that there can be difficulties with ambiguous semantic evaluations of the users’ search queries. Aspects considered in this thesis are also how the user search process could be facilitated by using recipe labels and graphical visualisations of the information. The ambition of this thesis is investigate how online recipe search can be made more effi- cient for people looking for Swedish recipes in Swedish. An initial user survey with a questionnaire was conducted to understand the po- tential requirements for the development of a tool to support online search of Swedish recipes. More specifically, the survey inquired about users’ current search experience and tried to identify useful search criteria. The results showed that 82.4% of the par- ticipants prefer to search for recipes online via a search engine, compared with other alternatives such as searching at specific recipe sites. The main difficulty the partici- pants experienced with that search approach was that many of the search results were not recipes but other types of search results. Most participants preferred to see more in- formative recipe items in the search results list. However at the same time, some recipe labels that were present were not actually noticed by most participants. The survey also investigated further what information that could be more appropriate to show about the recipes. Based on the outcomes from the survey study, a prototype application was then developed that targets for Swedish recipe search. The purpose of the prototype is to im- plement the search criteria identified from the survey and to provide enhancements. By developing this prototype, the search criteria could be tested by users on the prototype. A second user survey with a questionnaire was then conducted, evaluating the usabil- ity of the prototype. The prototype shows to offer improvements in filtering the search results to only show Swedish recipes, presenting more relevant recipe information and also improvements in visualising the information in the recipes in the search result list.

The digitalization of the marketing environment is changing the manner in which consumers take purchase decisions. Moreover, perceived risk has a determinant role on consumers’ purchase decision-making. However, although emerging literature suggests that consumers’ use of digital information generates new search and product evaluation processes different from those in traditional purchase setting, theorizing about the pattern and nature of these differences has been limited. More specifically, contradictory findings on the relationship between perceived risk and information search of experience-type products in digital environments have been identified in current literature. While some studies assert that perceived risk increases information search because one way of reducing risk is to obtain more information, other streams of literature point out that further engaging in information search might actually result in increased risk perception and purchase deterrence. Therefore, in order to clarify this gap and understand better the phenomenon of perceived risk during digital purchase decision-making process, this research advances with a finer-grained approach and with a longitudinal perspective in order to understand how the digitalization of the marketing environment affects consumers’ perceived risks during the process of information search. By conducting a qualitative multi-method research, this study discloses five stages in the process of risk processing during digital information search. The stages are: preparing for information search; initial information search; advanced information search, preparing for purchase and purchase decision-making and post purchase behavior. Based on these findings, the present study proposes that in the current digital context, perceived risk is a dynamic process consisting of stages in which the different types of risk are perceived by consumers as they progress in the search stage of the purchase decision-making process. Moreover, the perception of these dimensions of risk fluctuates as consumers search for information. Thus, these findings highlight that the search stage is a dynamic process and suggest that this is one of the reasons why the new customer journey is understood as a cyclic and dynamic process. Ultimately, this research contributes to the theorizing process of perceived risk in digital information search by providing new insights that suggest that in the current digital context perceived risk is a multidimensional construct that develops, changes and adapts to the information collected in the purchase decision-making process. Thus, this research proposes to understand and theorize perceived risk from a process-driven perspective in order to fully understand its behavior and suggests that the process of perceived risk processing and information search is dynamic and aligned with the cyclic nature of the new customer journey. Finally, this research contributes to the marketing practice by shedding light on where to act and how to mitigate the different types of risk in order to increase customer satisfaction and engagement during information search.

Resumen
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is a relatively new approach that professionals are using to cope with the ever-growing body of literature in their fields. The goal of EBP is to effectively use this body of literature to improve professional practice, thus improving the quality of services. A major component of EBP is asking a focused, well-built question, referred to in this paper as an Evidence Based Practice Question (EBPQ). This paper reports the findings of an exploratory study that examines the use an EBPQ to respond to reference questions emailed to a university library reference desk. A purposive sample of 30 randomly selected reference emails was divided into two groups, the EBPQ group and the control group. The professional searcher who conducted the searches used the same approach in responding to each emailed reference question, except that the EBPQ group searches were guided by EBPQs, and the control group’s responses were not. The results indicate that searches guided by using EBPQs are more focused, apply more resources to the search process, and take less time than searches not guided by using EBPQs. These conclusions suggest that EBPQs appear to be useful for improving that search process and that further research is warranted.

Resumen
The purpose of this research was to investigate the nature of consumer decision making. It considered the purchase of a video cassette recorder and investigated whether the assumptions of a model based on satisficing behaviour could be justified. It considered the nature of search behaviour and evaluation during the decision process and the factors which might influence it. The research therefore studied the stages of the decision process from the nature of Problem Recognition and Problem Classification, including the development of evoked sets during the decision process, the preference for and use of different information sources, the nature of search behaviour, the importance of choice criteria and the decision rules used while employing these choice criteria. This was investigated using three seperate but linked research approaches. A sample of the population in the West of Scotland was analysed to investigate differences between video owners and non video owners, while qualitative interviews were conducted to study the decision process itself. Conjoint Analysis was used to consider the relative importance of choice criteria. The study confirmed the sequential nature of the decision process and found a phased sequence of choice and search. Despite the nature of the good (expensive and innovative) the decision was generally considered of a low involvement nature. While the predictions of low involvement learning that a satisficing decision would be taken were found to be true our findings disagreed with the accepted theory on the use of information sources. It was also considered that it would be wrong to assume no cognitive processes were taking place as various choice heuristics were found which simplified the decision for the consumer.

Resumen
This dissertation analyzes the process of searching for and selecting a college or university president. Many researchers in the field of higher education have provided commentaries in the form of books and articles on the realities of search and selection procedures. as one composite voice, how do they assess the status of current hiring practices? Also, experts in presidential searches have offered their views on the subject in the form of search guides designed for boards of trustees and administrative personnel to make this activity better understood and more efficient. What the dissertation examines is whether or not these guides provide comprehensive treatment of the process of searching for and selecting a president.;In investigating these questions, the complex nature of the search and selection process is revealed. The analysis expands on what is discussed in the search guides. It focuses on what the search guides offer and what they do not. Recommendations for improving the presidential search and selection process based on this research are offered.

Aljawawdeh, H. "An interactive metaheuristic search framework for software service identification from business process models". Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2019. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/37959/.

Resumen
In recent years, the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) model of computing has become widely used and has provided efficient and agile business solutions in response to inevitable and rapid changes in business requirements. Software service identification is a crucial component in the production of a service-oriented architecture and subsequent successful software development, yet current service identification methods have limitations. For example, service identification methods are either not sufficiently comprehensive to handle the totality of service identification activities, or they lack computational support, or they pay insufficient attention to quality checks of resulting services. To address these limitations, comprehensive computationally intelligent support for software engineers when deriving software services from an organisation's business process models shows great potential, especially when the impact of human preference on the quality of the resulting solutions can be incorporated. Accordingly, this research attempts to apply interactive metaheuristic search to effectively bridge the gap between business and SOA technology and so increase business agility. A novel, comprehensive framework is introduced that is driven by domain independent role-based business process models, and uses an interactive metaheuristic search-based service identification approach based on a genetic algorithm, while adhering to SOA principles. Termed BPMiSearch, the framework is composed of three main layers. The first layer is concerned with processing inputs from business process models into search space elements by modelling input data and presenting them at an appropriate level of granularity. The second layer focuses on identifying software services from the specified search space. The third layer refines the resulting services to map the business elements in the resulting candidate services to the corresponding service components. The proposed BPMiSearch framework has been evaluated by applying it to a healthcare domain case study, specifically, Cancer Care and Registration (CCR) business processes at the King Hussein Cancer Centre, Amman, Jordan. Experiments show that the impact of software engineer interaction on the quality of the outcomes in terms of search effectiveness, efficiency, and level of user satisfaction, is assessed. Results show that BPMiSearch has rapid search performance to positively support software engineers in the identification of services from role-based business process models while adhering to SOA principles. High-quality services are identified that might not have been arrived at manually by software engineers. Furthermore, it is found that BPMiSearch is sensitive and responsive to software engineer interaction resulting in a positive level of user trust, acceptance, and satisfaction with the candidate services.

Henry, Andrew Joseph. "Integrated Process Planning and Scheduling for a Complex Job Shop Using a Proxy Based Local Search". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77885.

Texto completo
Resumen
Within manufacturing systems, process planning and scheduling are two interrelated problems that are often treated independently. Process planning involves deciding which operations are required to produce a finished product and which resources will perform each operation. Scheduling involves deciding the sequence that operations should be processed by each resource, where process planning decisions are known a priori. Integrating process planning and scheduling offers significant opportunities to reduce bottlenecks and improve plant performance, particularly for complex job shops. This research is motivated by the coating and laminating (CandL) system of a film manufacturing facility, where more than 1,000 product types are regularly produced monthly. The CandL system can be described as a complex job shop with sequence dependent setups, operation re-entry, minimum and maximum wait time constraints, and a due date performance measure. In addition to the complex scheduling environment, products produced in the CandL system have multiple feasible process plans. The CandL system experiences significant issues with schedule generation and due date performance. Thus, an integrated process planning and scheduling approach is needed to address large scale industry problems. In this research, a novel proxy measure based local search (PBLS) approach is proposed to address the integrated process planning and scheduling for a complex job shop. PBLS uses a proxy measure in conjunction with local search procedures to adjust process planning decisions with the goal of reducing total tardiness. A new dispatching heuristic, OU-MW, is developed to generate feasible schedules for complex job shop scheduling problems with maximum wait time constraints. A regression based proxy approach, PBLS-R, and a neural network based proxy approach, PBLS-NN, are investigated. In each case, descriptive statistics about the active process plan set are used as independent variables in the model. The resulting proxy measure is used to evaluate the effect of process planning local search moves on the objective function sum of total tardiness. Using the proxy measure to guide a local search reduces the number of times a detailed schedule is generated reducing overall runtime. In summary, the proxy measure based local search approach involves the following stages: - Generate a set of feasible schedules for a set of jobs in a complex job shop. - Evaluate the parameters and results of the schedules to establish a proxy measure that will estimate the effect of process planning decisions on objective function performance. - Apply local search methods to improve upon feasible schedules. Both PBLS-R and PBLS-NN are integrated process planning and scheduling heuristics capable of addressing the challenges of the CandL problem. Both approaches show significant improvement in objective function performance when compared to local search guided by random walk. Finally, an optimal solution approach is applied to small data sets and the results are compared to those of PBLS-R and PBLS-NN. Although the proxy based local search approaches investigated do not guarantee optimality, they provide a significant improvement in computational time when compared to an optimal solution approach. The results suggest proxy based local search is an appealing approach for integrated process planning and scheduling in complex job shop environment where optimal solution approaches are not viable due to processing time.

Resumen
We propose a model of search term selection process based on our empirical study of professional searchers during the pre-online stage of the search process. The model characterizes the selection of search terms as the navigation of different discourses. Discourse refers to the way of talking and thinking about a certain topic; there often exists multiple, diverse discourses on the same topic. When selecting search terms, searchers appear to navigate a variety of discourses, i.e., they view the topic of a client's search request from the perspective of multiple discourse communities, and evaluate and synthesize differences and similarities among those discourses when selecting search terms. Six discourses emerged as sources of search terms in our study. These discourses are controlled vocabularies, documents and domains, the practice of indexing, clients' search requests, databases and the searchers' own search experience. Data further suggest that searchers navigate these discourses dynamically and have preferences for certain discourses. Conceptualizing the selection of search terms as a meeting place of different discourses provides new insights into the complex nature of the search term selection process. It emphasizes the multiplicity and complexity of the sources of search terms, the dynamic nature of the search term selection process, and the complex analysis and synthesis of differences and similarities among sources of search terms. It suggests that searchers may need to understand fundamental aspects of multiple discourses in order to select search terms.

Resumen
In this thesis I present my work in the field of SDR (Software Defined Radio) and concurrent systems. This work is part of the hybrid SDR Platform project, which distributes the signal processing between the Central Processing Unit of the PC (Personal Computer) and a dedicated signal processor. The PC side of the platform is the controller and the human interface of the system. It is a translator between the wishes of the user and the dedicated signal processor. As it is purely software we labelled it SP (Software Platform). The dedicated signal processor, together with the analogue RF (Radio Frequency) front-end and high speed signal converters is the HP (Hardware Platform). My share of this endeavour was the development of the SP (Software Platform) of the SDR Platform. The concept of the SDR Platform is to not limit the user to a specific HP (Hardware Platform). In real-time signal processing, the signal processing algorithms execute concurrently. To implement the algorithms I chose to use Communicating Sequential Processes, which with its processes and channels resembles block diagrams, visualising signal processing chains. The SP itself is a concurrent system as well, thus I use CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes) as the basis for the SP. The SP consists of the management and the exchangeable SM (Software Module) part. To exchange a SM it is first necessary to terminate the process network representing it. One way of terminating process networks is to spread a termination message (poison) through it, informing every process about the termination. I extended the graceful termination technique, by introducing a second type of poison. I developed a proof of concept implementation, JCSP-Poison, which is based on JCSP. I show the CSP models of these channels as well as verifying that the JCSP implementation of them works correctly. I developed KCSP (Kernel Communicating Sequential Processes), which is an add on to an OS kernel, providing a CSP environment. KCSP allows developers to develop device drivers following the CSP principles.

Resumen
Business processes are fundamental to the operations of a company. Each product manufactured and every service provided is the result of a series of actions that constitute a business process. Business process management is an organizational principle that makes the processes of a company explicit and offers capabilities to implement procedures, control their execution, analyze their performance, and improve them. Therefore, business processes are documented as process models that capture these actions and their execution ordering, and make them accessible to stakeholders. As these models are an essential knowledge asset, they need to be managed effectively. In particular, the discovery and reuse of existing knowledge becomes challenging in the light of companies maintaining hundreds and thousands of process models. In practice, searching process models has been solved only superficially by means of free-text search of process names and their descriptions. Scientific contributions are limited in their scope, as they either present measures for process similarity or elaborate on query languages to search for particular aspects. However, they fall short in addressing efficient search, the presentation of search results, and the support to reuse discovered models. This thesis presents a novel search method, where a query is expressed by an exemplary business process model that describes the behavior of a possible answer. This method builds upon a formal framework that captures and compares the behavior of process models by the execution ordering of actions. The framework contributes a conceptual notion of behavioral distance that quantifies commonalities and differences of a pair of process models, and enables process model search. Based on behavioral distances, a set of measures is proposed that evaluate the quality of a particular search result to guide the user in assessing the returned matches. A projection of behavioral aspects to a process model enables highlighting relevant fragments that led to a match and facilitates its reuse. The thesis further elaborates on two search techniques that provide concrete behavioral distance functions as an instantiation of the formal framework. Querying enables search with a notion of behavioral inclusion with regard to the query. In contrast, similarity search obtains process models that are similar to a query, even if the query is not precisely matched. For both techniques, indexes are presented that enable efficient search. Methods to evaluate the quality and performance of process model search are introduced and applied to the techniques of this thesis. They show good results with regard to human assessment and scalability in a practical setting.

Process innovation is an important topic in business research. It enables competitive advantages for companies if managed properly. It is previously acknowledged that uncertainty in process innovation is common and previously research show that it has a negative impact on process innovation projects, as it can cause a waste of resources for the company. For SME’s, where resources are limited, it is imperative that uncertainty do not affect process innovation projects negatively. Previous scholars do not identify sources of process innovation uncertainty in SME’s or how it can be managed, thus leave a gap in theory that is important to fill. The purpose of the study was to investigate how uncertainty in process innovation arises in an SME and how it can be reduced by an investigation on how SEO, as an instance of process innovation, was perceived before and after an implementation process and if a change in perception was related to uncertainty. A single case study with qualitative interviews, combined with an implementation process of SEO, was used to investigate the topic and generate in-depth knowledge. Our findings identify sources of process innovation uncertainty in SME’s, arising from either a resource perspective or from an organizational perspective. Furthermore, we suggest how to manage the identified sources of uncertainty through either information, communication or results. Organizations can use these findings to manage process innovation uncertainty before it arises, thus achieve successful process innovation.

Resumen
This research is an integral part of the effort aimed at overcoming the limitations of the classic search engines. This thesis is concerned with the investigation of the impact of different modes of mediation on the web search process. Conceptually, it is divided into three main parts. The first part details the investigation of methods and mechanisms in user profile generation and in filtering search results. The second part deals with the presentation of an approach and its application in the development of a mediation framework between the user and the classic Web Search engines. This involved the integration of the explicit, implicit and hybrid modes of mediation within a content-based method, and was facilitated by the adoption of the Vector Space Model. The third part presents an extensive comparative evaluation of the impact of the different types of mediation systems on web search, in terms of precision, recall and F-measure. The thesis concludes by identifying the contribution of the research programme and the satisfaction of the stated objectives.

The learning process at the university has been increasingly trying to develop reflexive and critical professionals, offering them a close contact with the reality since their intern period as students. The academic library has been seen frequently as an environment to support learning, research and additional studies activities at the academia. Nevertheless, it also has the role to contribute to the student immersion on the academic research, developing activities as a medium for its users to search for information so that they could transform it in knowledge. It is taken into consideration the importance of Librarianship and Information Science to dialogue with other areas as Education, Scientific Methodology and Psychology. This paper deals with the concepts of information and knowledge, academic library, users studies and learning. Its goal is to discuss the role of the librarian in relation to its users education, understanding the library as a place to acquire knowledge. The study is based on the constructive Information Search Process (ISP) from Carol Kuhlthau. The research has an exploratory character with qualitative approach through interviews with students from graduation and post graduation from three fields: Humanities, Biological and Exact Sciences from Universidade de São Paulo (Sao Paulo University). By the end of the analysis, it is concluded that there is a need and space for the university library to become an environment proper to collaborate on the knowledge of the university student.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether Black men experienced empowerment throughout the process of employment preparation. This study also sought to give voice to this population regarding their experience in this process. A definition of empowerment, posed by Barbara Solomon of “empowerment theory”, was used to understand the process of empowerment the study participants may have experienced. Nine African American male former offenders who had participated in a job readiness program, and are 18 and older, were interviewed about the preparation they received, and how they perceived this training effected their pursuit of agency, employment, and recidivism.

Resumen
Unemployment and precarity have become key features of 21st century work. Employability is presented as a solution to these issues. Individuals are exhorted to manage their employability, in order to be able to exercise choice in the labour market. While employability is individuals' responsibility, governments, employers and educational bodies simply provide opportunities for its development. Higher education is a key site for this process, as employability rhetoric increasingly informs policy and practice. It is founded on rhetoric that emphasises flexibility, skills and marketability, shaping students in certain ways with the risk of being deemed unemployable as the consequence of disengagement. At the same time, there has been a rise in employer presence on university campuses. Recruitment is no longer its key feature. Traditional 'milkround' recruitment has been replaced by year round marketing campaigns. As a result, students are continually exposed to a selection of employers promoting a specific image of work and work orientations. The theoretical framework of this study is informed by works of Antonio Gramsci and Mikhail Bakhtin. Gramsci's notion of 'common sense?' is central to analysing the rhetoric on work and employability present on campus. I also give voice to students by recounting how they as 'dialogical selves' engage with such 'common sense'. These issues are explored through an analysis of data gathered during seventeen months of fieldwork. This includes longitudinal interviews with students, participant observation, documents, interviews with careers advisors and non-participant observation of career consultations. From this, I argue that there was a strongly normative image of work constructed around an orientation I term 'consumption of work'. This image was closely associated with consumption opportunities, marketed to students through corporate presence on campus. 'Consumption of work' was central to shaping students' work orientations and only few of them resisted the 'common sense'. Those who made 'alternative' choices articulated doubt about these, with the challenge to employability as a key reason for it. Employability was presented to students as a lifelong project of the self, where constant acquisition, development and selling of skills were necessary to maintain a position in the labour market. Many students embraced the rhetoric of skill 'possession', but were 'playing the game' when 'demonstrating' skills. Conforming to what the employers were willing them to 'demonstrate' and understanding how to do this became the primary condition for achieving employability.

Porter, Robin K. "Levels of Effectiveness of Communication Skills Used by College Students During The Job Search Process". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33529.

Resumen
One historic mission of higher education has been to produce good citizens. To ensure that students develop into productive citizens, institutions of higher education aim to assist students in exploring their career interests and finding jobs upon graduation. Employers have reported that college students conducting job search processes do not posses the skills they seek in applicants. Specifically, employers have mentioned the lack of written and oral communication skills among applicants. It would seem that there is a clear distinction between the communication skills that employers seek and the communication skills that students offer. Employers believe that students lack the basic skills of speaking and listening. They also believe the writing skills of applicants are insufficient. This study was designed to gain a better understanding of the level of effectiveness of the communication skills used by college students during a job search process. Specifically this study will look at written communication skills. The sample will include 120 students involved in a job search process during the spring, 2000 academic term. Data will consist of cover letters and resumes that students use when conducting a job search. Results will be analyzed by rating the data on issues like grammar, language and spelling, and clarity. Results will be analyzed for all participants. Analysis will also be conducted to explore differences by race, gender, and academic college (Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Business). The results of this study provided some interesting information about the written communication skills used by students during their job search. Overall, students demonstrated that they have a good understanding of how to present Aesthetically pleasing Cover Letters and Resumes that appropriately address the components in these documents. Results also showed that women have stronger written communication skills than men. Majority students proved to be more adept than minority students at composing Cover Letters and Resumes. Finally, results showed that students from the College of Business have stronger written communication skills than students from the College of Engineering.

Bradley, Margaret Antoinette. "In search of home : Hillman's archetypal perspective on the therapeutic process of an adult patient". Thesis, Rhodes University, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006290.

Texto completo
Resumen
The case study method was used to trace the therapeutic process of a 23 year old woman, over a period of 12 sessions. The focus of the study was her issue with abandonment which emerged as the central theme in therapy. Hillman's archetypal approach was used as a framework in understanding the process and resolution of her feelings of abandonment. According to Hillman, the therapy process activates the archetypal abandoned child. For a successful therapeutic outcome the process of de-literalisation must occur in order for the patient to move from literal acting out to symbolic containment. Core moments in the therapeutic process were used, together with an interpretation from Hillman's approach, to illustrate the various themes around the issue of abandonment. The present case study illustrates how the theory in area was relevant in practice with this particular case.

The World Wide Web has quickly grown since the 90s, and it has led to an increase in the number ofwebsites and the intensification of the competition. In parallel, search engines have played a major roleby facilitating the research of information on the web, to the point of being an infinite source of traffic ofwhich websites' owners would like to take advantage. In order to capture the maximum of qualifiedtraffic, it has become necessary to stand out from the competitors to improve the visibility of a websiteon search engines. To do that, websites' owners can resort to firms which practice Search EngineOptimization (SEO). The latter gathers all the optimization techniques which make it possible to improvethe ranking of web pages at the highest rank in the search results. The activity of search engineoptimization is done by a SEO practitioner who, by optimizing some technical criteria, improves theranking of the website. But the obtained results are uncertain, because of the ever-changing rankingalgorithms of search engines. Consequently, it has become necessary for the SEO practitioner to have abetter mastery of the SEO process and to be helped in its decision makings in order to satisfy its clients. Our research works have allowed us to make three contributions:- Creation of an efficient structure for the SEO activity from the definition of the different steps ofthe SEO process and the use of an engineering meta-model;- Modeling of the SEO process by using a multi-agent system in order to enable a betterunderstanding of its functioning and to efficiently master its different interactions;- Design of a decision support system thanks to our agent-based model to support the SEOa c t i v i t y .These three main contributions enabled us to answer our research question which was: "How to designthe search engine optimization process in order to improve its mastery by the SEO practitioner and theclient ?"

Serrell, Karen. "Finders Keepers: A Comparative Study Investigating Teaching The Florida Research Process Finds Model Through Three Different Approaches at the Elementary School Level". Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2009. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3106.

Resumen
The children's taunt "Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers" gives new credence to the information search process at the elementary school level. Children keep what they find, claim it as their own, and accept information without discernment or critique. This study examines the effectiveness of teaching information literacy skills through three different approaches. The first curricular approach uses direct instruction to teach children how to do research using the Florida Research Process FINDS Model. The second approach pairs the FINDS Model with a unit of study that is related to classroom curriculum. The third approach examines the FINDS Model in conjunction with project learning, a constructivist model based on student interest. One hundred twenty- eight third grade students attending a public elementary school in Southwest Florida during the 2008-2009 school year participated in the study. A mixed-methods research approach was used to gather data. Quantitative data was collected with an information literacy pre and post test, and an anonymous media lessons" survey about student preferences. Qualitative data were gathered through a review of student work samples and student interviews. Statistically significant gains were found between the pre to post test scores for all three groups, however no statistically significant differences were found among groups. Although quantitative data did not reveal differences among the treatment groups, qualitative findings revealed that the group taught research skills through the connection to classroom curriculum approach performed better. Thus the findings of this study support existing research which proposes that the best practice for teaching research skills to young children is through a connection to classroom curriculum.
