AbstractRakugo is a Japanese stage art originating in the seventeenth century, and was initially popular with the lower classes. For the majority of its history, rakugo stories have been performed by men for (mostly) male audiences. The misogynistic and/or male-centered characters of the stories are not the only obstacle female performers are faced with; they also have to confront the male-centered community and audience expectations. With few senior female master-performers, there is a lack of role models and younger female performers have to find strategies regarding their portfolio, voice production, stage appearance and modification of stories. This chapter looks at the history of female performers and explores the current state on Tokyo’s rakugo stage also providing a valuable analysis of one of the few Japanese stage arts which allows women to perform on its main stages.

AbstractThis paper shows the implementation of miniature sensors for soil moisture measurement and their integration in a root-inspired burrowing growing robot. Three kinds of sensors are combined to estimate the water content in soil: a resistivity sensor composed of two brass electrodes, a commercial air humidity sensor interfaced with the soil by a filter membrane of PTFE with polyester scrim, and an RGB sensor used for visible reflectance spectroscopy. We show their integration and embeddability in a burrowing growing robot based on additive manufacturing with a 4 cm probe diameter. The multimodal sensing strategy has been characterized and tested in clay and sand medium at different water content. Results show that the resistive sensor works in all the tested ranges but is prone to failure due to electrode-soil contact issues. The air humidity sensor works accurately in a range of water content less than 5% (dry conditions), and the RGB sensor works in the 5–20% range. We propose a statistical approach for soil moisture estimation that combines all three technologies and demonstrate that we can accurately predict the water content in our experimental soils, clay and sand, with better performance in clay (Root Mean Square Error, RMSE = 0.38). The proposed miniaturized multimodal sensing strategy can enable long-term, in-situ soil moisture monitoring functionalities in self-deployable robots for precision agriculture and forestry applications.

AbstractAn international migrant is defined as somebody who lives in a different country from that in which they were born, irrespective of their nationality. According to this definition, there are 284 million international migrants in the world (UNDESA Report, 2021), a number which has rapidly grown since the 1990s (120 million). However, there is a far greater number of internal migrants, travelling within national borders, currently standing at 740 million. Whereas “migrants” are defined geographically (mobility across borders for more than 1 year), the “foreigner” is defined legally, as a non-national. There are therefore always more international migrants than there are foreigners, since some migrants are non-nationals in their place of residence, while others have naturalised to become nationals. Irregular migrants are not included in international and internal statistics. International migrants may belong to one of several categories, in a context of blurred categorisations and mixed migration flows. Foreign workers make up the largest group, although in old immigration countries, such as the US and certain European countries, family reunification makes up the largest group. There are increasing numbers of international students, as well as refugees. We can distinguish between voluntary migration (work, family reunification, studies) and forced migration (refugees, environmentally displaced persons), and observe patterns with regard to the gender of migrants (overall, men and women make up 52% and 48% of international migrants respectively), age (senior, economically active, and minor migrants), their degree of qualification (broadly, skilled and unskilled migrants), and their legal or irregular status. However, the increasing globalisation of migration is making it more and more difficult to distinguish between some profiles, especially between voluntary and forced migrants.

AbstractIn production environments, monitoring the vibration of a machine or parts thereof can yield important information about the condition of the machine. The most common recommendation for vibration-based condition monitoring is to place a vibration sensor on each part of interest. These vibration sensors usually output preprocessed data, for example the root mean square value of a predefined time window.We propose to use machine learning to simultaneously monitor several vibration-emitting machine parts using only one single vibration sensor. Due to the superposition of multiple vibrations, this is not feasible using preprocessed sensor data. Our approach therefore consists of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network, which uses the raw vibration signal as input to classify the status of the monitored machine parts.As a first proof of concept, we monitored the status of three different motors. Using our approach, we were able to detect, which motors were running at a given time with high accuracy. We were able to significantly improve the classification results by transforming the raw data into the frequency domain. Our results are promising and show, that monitoring several vibration-emitting machine parts at the same time using only one vibration sensor is feasible.

This chapter conducts a final assessment of the British and American military strategy of the Saratoga campaign and the leadership of the major players involved in 1777, including Germain, Washington, Howe, Burgoyne, Gates, Schuyler, and others. The primary reason the British failed in their quest to end the war in 1777 was due to faulty military strategy. Fundamental errors involving coordination, lack of unity of command, faulty assumptions, and their failure to fully evaluate ends, ways, and means, in London, New York City, and Canada, doomed Burgoyne’s expedition even before it started. This chapter also includes an overall assessment of the leadership of the major senior ranking figures on both sides—Washington, Germain, Burgoyne, Gates, Howe, Clinton, Schuyler, St. Clair, Arnold, and others. In general, the American commanders demonstrated better leadership throughout the campaign.

Abstract IN the Senate three men of consular rank had spoken against Antonius, namely L. Piso, P. Servilius and Cicero, and therefore might be said to have encouraged the designs of Octavianus. That was all they had in common-in character, career and policy the three consulars were discordant and irreconcilable. Piso, an aristocrat of character and discernment, united loyalty to Roman standards of conduct with a lively appreciation of the literature and philosophy of Hellas: he was the friend and patron of Philodemus, the poet and scholar. Though elegant in his tastes, Piso suited his way of living to his family tradition and to his fortune, which would not have supported ostentatious display and senseless luxury.2 Being the father-in-law of Caesar, and elected through the agency of Pompeius and Caesar to the consulate, Piso saw no occasion to protect Cicero from the threat, sentence and consequences of exile. Cicero remembered and attacked Piso for his conduct of the governorship of Macedonia, both before and after the proconsul returned, on any excuse. Piso replied, no doubt with some effect. Nor did any political enemy or ambitious youth come forward to arraign by prosecution a proconsul alleged to have been corrupt, incompetent and calamitous. Pisa, however, withdrew more and more from active politics. Yet his repute, or at least his influence, is sufficiently demonstrated by his election, though reluctant, to the censorship in 50 B.c., an honour to which many consulars must have aspired as due recognition of public service and political wisdom.
