The adolescent years are pivotal in reproductive and sexual development and maturation, yet the experience of migration can severely disrupt this period, inhibiting young immigrants’ knowledge, access, and engagement with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Further, young immigrants and minority populations often face persistent intersectional barriers, including language difficulties, cultural stigma, and systemic exclusion, that result in adverse SRH outcomes. Recent advances in SRH care, particularly in digital health and community-based interventions, show promise in improving a

Background Latinx gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men are disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States. As Latinx sexual minority men, particularly those who are foreign-born, experience inequitable access to health services, tailored strategies to engage them for HIV prevention are urgently needed. Objective Our study seeks to address the need for enhanced access to HIV prevention among Latinx immigrant sexual minority men. We developed and piloted a culturally sensitive technology-based campaign focused on HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake. Methods We

Abstract For older adults with HIV, forms of privilege and oppression (racism, poverty, limited access to quality education, and inequalities in criminal justice system) intersect with stigmatized social identities (immigrant status, non-cisgender identity, sexual orientation, depression, and addiction) that may increase cumulative burden of psychological distress, contribute to poor clinical outcomes, and create disparities in health care utilization. Using survey and focus group data from the San Francisco ROAH 2.0 (Research on Older Adults with HIV) site, we explored how layered intersectio

We build on studies on integration and message effectiveness to test whether narrative versus statistical evidence is more effective in promoting openness to Western European norms among different subgroups of Muslim immigrants. We draw on an experiment in which Muslim immigrants living in the Netherlands ( N = 454) saw narrative or statistical messages about gender equality, sexual minority rights, and secularism in public life. We find that the Dutch-born were more receptive to a narrative, while statistical messages generated greater openness to the tested norms among those born in Muslim c

Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in North Carolina with increasing incidence of HIV infection. Gender roles, cultural expectations, and acculturation of women may explain some of Hispanic women’s risks. The perspectives of Hispanic female immigrants and community-based providers were sought to identify services they offer, understand HIV risk factors, and support the adaptation of a best-evidence HIV behavioural intervention for Hispanic women. This chapter explores how sexual liberalisation values differ between young people with an immigrant background and their majority peers in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and England. It focuses in particular on cultural aspects of immigrant integration, including acculturative change associated with immigrant generations, as well as youth’s varying ethno-cultural heritages and religious affiliations. Analyses document the tendency to more-conservative attitudes among minorities with a more traditional background, in terms of both religious affiliation and country of origin. That cultural im

Abstract This chapter explores Venetian society in the sixteenth century, including family and sexual relations, social networks, minority groups, and immigrants. Significant attention is paid to women’s lives and the options available to them including marriage, the nunnery, or prostitution. Late Renaissance Venice was home to two large minority groups: Greek immigrants and Jews. Early in the sixteenth century Jews were finally allowed to settle permanently in the city, although they were confined to the Ghetto. The historic treatment of students with disabilities in many ways resembles racial segregation in schools. Brown’s influence in this field is clear but complicated. Also complicated are debates over equal treatment of students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. Religious students—and religious schools—elicit further variations on the educational equality debate with consequences for social integration and intergroup relations. Compulsory education laws in the United States for many years exempted students with mental and physical disabilities, and many school systems exc
