Following Sutton E. Griggs’s departure from Nashville, he changed his priorities, allegiances, and approaches. He led Memphis’s Tabernacle Baptist Church, worked with the city’s white power structure, and elaborated the Science of Collective Efficiency, designed to modify black behavior. Griggs often tangled with editors and columnists of black newspapers, including the Chicago Defender. Another battle occurred between him and R. H. Boyd, contributing to the 1915 splintering of the National Baptist Convention. In 1928, he recorded sermons that relate to pivotal themes and motifs in his novels.
