Texto completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: Educators across the health professions are now concerned with the teaching and assessment of professional skills. Caring behaviour is one of the attributes of professionalism in the health sciences professions and in the nursing profession it is regarded as the essence of the profession. The aim of this study is to explore the understandings and experiences of caring behaviours of first- and fourth year nursing students and how they would like to be assessed about their caring behaviours in a curriculum where it is not overtly taught. This will be investigated according to Watson’s carative factors and theoretical framework of caring, while Bloom’s Taxonomy of the affective learning domain will also be consulted. The design of the study is qualitative and explorative. A purposive sample was drawn from first-year nursing students (n=64), and fourth-year nursing students (n=41) at one nursing education institution. The sample of students (n=105) from seven (7) private training hospitals in the Western Cape participated in nine (9) focus group interviews (n=10-15). Data analysis was done by means of a framework analysis approach with a deductive strategy. Research findings from this study are extensively discussed and will be used to inform the undergraduate nursing curricula in South Africa about the profiles of caring nursing students and to make recommendations about the internalisation of caring behaviours, according to the affective learning domain.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Opvoeders vanuit die verskeie gesondheidsberoepe, is tans met die leer en assessering van professionele vaardighede gemoeid. Sorgsame gedrag is een kenmerk van professionalisme in die gesondheidsberoepe. In verpleegkunde word sorgsame gedrag as die kern van die beroep beskou. Die doel van hierdie studie is om die begrip en ervarings van eerste- en vierde-jaar verpleegkunde studente rondom sorgsame gedrag te ondersoek. ʼn Verdere doel is om te bepaal hoe hierdie studente graag geassesseer wil word oor hul sorgsame gedrag in ʼn kurrikulum waar hierdie kenmerk nie pertinent geleer word nie. Watson se sorgsaamheidsfaktore en teoretiese raamwerk oor sorgsaamheid, sal gebruik word om die onderwerp na te vors. Bloom se Taksonomie van die affektiewe leergebied sal gesamentlik met Watson gebruik word as teoretiese grondslag vir die navorsing. Die studie-ontwerp is kwalitatief en verkennend. ʼn Doelbewuste seleksie is gedoen om spesifieke eerstejaar verpleegkunde studente (n=64) en vierdejaar verpleegkunde studente (n=41) by die navorsing te betrek. Die geselekteerde studente (n=105) van sewe (7) private opleidingshospitale in die Wes-Kaap, het aan nege (9) fokusgroep onderhoude deelgeneem (n=10-15). Die data-analise is deur middel van ʼn raamwerk-analise benader en ʼn deduktiewe strategie is gebruik. Die resultate van hierdie navorsing word omvattend bespreek en sal gebruik word ten doel voorgraadse verpleegkunde kurrikula in Suid-Afrika te informeer rakende die sorgsaamheidsprofiel van verpleegkunde studente. Aanbevelings, volgens die affektiewe leergebied, word ook gemaak oor hoe sorgsame gedrag geïnternaliseer kan word.

Texto completoAntecedents: La recerca sobre multimorbiditat, la coexistència de dues o meés condicions relacionades amb la salut, s’ha enfocat principalment a poblacions de pacients i de major edat. La prevalença de multimorbilitat entre treballadors, i el seu efectes sobre indicadors rellevants per a la salut ocupacional, no està gaire estudiada. Mètodes: Partint de dades de dues poblacions treballadores, vam calcular puntuacions de multimorbilitat ponderades per la seva severitat considerant: 1) la interrelació entre condicions cròniques, hàbits relacionats amb la salut i símptomes, 2) l’efecte de cada condició crònica sobre el mal estat de salut general. Seguidament, vam avaluar l’efecte longitudinal de la multimobilitat basal en la incidència i durada del total d’episodis d’incapacitat temporal, d’episodis per diagnòstics específics, així com en la capacitat d’assolir les demandes laborals un cop retornat d’una incapacitat temporal. Resultats: Pels homes, la multimorbiditat alta va ser un factor de risc tant pel total d’episodis d’incapacitat temporal com per aquells deguts a trastorns musculoesquelètics i malalties cardiovasculars. Per a les dones aquesta tendència va ser menys clara, malgrat que els episodis deguts a trastorns mentals van mostrar l’associació més evident. L’associació amb la durada dels episodis va ser menys consistent. La multimorbilitat alta es va associar negativament a la capacitat per assolir les demandes laborals, al llarg del temps, i un cop tornat al treball desprès d’una incapacitat temporal. Conclusió: La multimorbiditat té efectes sobre indicadors de salut laboral. Mesurar-la permetria la detecció precoç de treballadors que s’enfronten a un desequilibri entre les limitacions relacionades amb la salut i les demandes laborals, i que estan a risc d’un episodi d’incapacitat temporal.

Texto completoFöretagshälsovården (FHV) har en betydelsefull roll i samhället. Den finns till för att förebygga ohälsa och stärka hälsan hos arbetstagare. Företagshälsovårdens verksamhet och utveckling studeras just nu på skolan för teknik och hälsa på Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan. En av de branscher som åskådliggörs är hemtjänsten. Under 00-talet var arbetstagarna i hemtjänsten en av de mest sjukskrivna grupperna i Sverige. Det här magister-examensarbetet inom arbetsmiljöutveckling och förändringsledning fokuserar på att undersöka vilken specialkunskap FHV behöver för att stärka hemtjänstbranschens arbetstagare samt ta reda på hur samverkan mellan FHV och hemtjänsten fungerar och hur den kan utvecklas. En kvalitativ intervjustudie utfördes i en svensk storstad med utgångspunkt i ett organisationsperspektiv. Sex personer mellan 30 och 65 år intervjuades. Intervjuobjektens yrken var ergonom, arbetsmiljöingenjör, undersköterska i hemtjänsten och chefer från båda parter. För att få en djupare förståelse för fenomenet transkriberades intervjuerna. Betydelsefulla gemensamma teman för intervjupersonerna var samverkan, ekonomi och engagemang, viktiga arbetsmiljöfrågor, förebyggande arbete i dag, hemtjänstens tjänstebehov av FHV och vilket stöd FHV behöver i sitt arbete med hemtjänsten. De studerade parterna var överens om att de inte hade något utvecklat samarbete och att det bestod ett glapp mellan dem. Alla intervjupersoner var eniga om arbetsmiljöproblemen i branschen. Dessa var stress, tidspress, tungt fysisk arbete, att brukarnas hem inte alltid var anpassade för hemtjänstpersonalen, avsaknad av kollegor, hot och våld samt rökande brukare. Det fanns idag en barriär mellan det förebyggande arbete som skulle kunna bedrivas och vad som beställdes av hemtjänsten.

Texto completoThis article presents the homotopy perturbation method (HPM) employed to investigate the effects of inclination on the thermal behavior of a porous fin heat sink. The study aims to review the thermal characterization of heat sink with the inclined porous fin of rectangular geometry. The study establishes that heat sink of an inclined porous fin shows a higher thermal performance compared to a heat sink of equal dimension with a vertical porous fin. In addition, the study also shows that the performance of inclined or tilted fin increases with decrease in length–thickness aspect ratio. The study further reveals that increase in the internal heat generation variable decreases the fin temperature gradient, which invariably decreases the heat transfer of the fin. The obtained results using HPM highlights the accuracy of the present method for the analysis of nonlinear heat transfer problems, as it agrees well with the established results of Runge–Kutta.

Texto completoSmall businesses flourish when employees are happy, healthy and productive. This makes employees an important asset of a small business because its success depends on the performance of its employees. Employee wellness practices in small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) often focus on the physical aspects of wellbeing, despite employees wanting management to focus on their emotional needs. In view of the fact that employers do not realise that employee wellness significantly improves morale and increases retention rates, this research sought to explore the employee wellness experiences of managers and employees in SMMEs to develop an understanding of the need for employee wellness practices in these organisations. Accordingly, a qualitative study was conducted among 17 employees and four managers at three diverse industries operating in the Gauteng region of South Africa. The data were collected by means of focus groups interviews with employees and individual interviews with managers who work in SMMEs that employ less than 50 employees. The results indicated that employees consider employee wellness in terms of how well organisations treat them and take care of them. The findings demonstrated that employees depend on good working relationships to be happy and engaged in the workplace. Although management cited various financial and human resource constraints that limit employee wellness practices, the employees identified various activities and practices that were not dependent on financial resources for implementation. The results also showed there was insufficient evidence to support the notion that there is a link between unhealthy workplace conditions and higher absenteeism and staff turnover rates. The findings highlighted that employees need social interaction in order to feel valued and cared for and that this factor often outweighs the negative feelings employees have of working in unhealthy environments. Thus, employees were willing to work in unhealthy conditions as long as they felt valued by top management. The findings of the study contribute to the knowledge in the literature on employee wellness practices in SMMEs because limited studies have been conducted to demonstrate the impact of workplace conditions on employee wellness.

In die lig daarvan dat werkgewers nie besef dat werknemerwelstand moraal en behoudsyfers aansienlik verbeter nie, het hierdie navorsing gepoog om die werknemerwelstand-ondervindinge van bestuurders en werknemers in KMMO’s te ondersoek om ‘n begrip van die behoefte aan werknemerwelstand-praktyke in hierdie ondernemings te ontwikkel. Ooreenkomstig hiermee is ‘n kwalitatiewe studie onderneem onder 17 werknemers en vier bestuurders by drie diverse industrieë wat in die Gauteng-omgewing in Suid-Afrika sake doen. Die data is versamel deur middel van fokusgroeponderhoude met werknemers en individuele onderhoude met bestuurders wat by KMMO’s met minder as 50 werknemers werk. Die bevindinge toon dat werknemers werknemerwelstand beoordeel volgens hoe goed organisasies hulle behandel en na hulle omsien. Die bevindinge het uitgewys dat werknemers staatmaak op goeie werksverhoudings om gelukkig en betrokke te wees in die werkplek. Hoewel bestuur verskeie finansiële en menslike hulpbron-beperkings uitgewys het wat werknemerwelstandpraktyke beperk, het die werknemers verskeie aktiwiteite en praktyke geïdentifiseer wat onafhanklik van finansiële hulpbronne geïmplementeer kan word. Die studie het ook bevind dat daar nie genoegsame bewyse is om die idee te staaf dat daar ‘n verband is tussen ongesonde werkplekomstandighede en ‘n hoër afwesigheidsyfer en personeelomset nie. Die bevindinge lig dit uit dat werknemers sosiale interaksie nodig het om gewaardeerd en na omgesien te voel en dat hierdie faktor dikwels swaarder weeg as die negatiewe gevoelens wat werknemers in ‘n ongesonde werkomgewing ervaar. Werknemers is dus bereid om in ongesonde omstandighede te werk solank hulle gewaardeerd voel deur topbestuur. Die bevindinge van die studie dra by tot die kennis in die literatuur oor werknemerwelstandpraktyke in KMMO’s aangesien studies wat die impak van werkplekomstandighede op werknemerwelstand demonstreer tot dusver beperk is.
