Makhinko, Anton, Nataliia Makhinko y Volodymyr Semko. "Creation of design models of silos for grain storage under conditions of non‐axisymmetric actions". ce/papers 6, n.º 3-4 (septiembre de 2023): 1935–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/cepa.2552.

Resumen
AbstractThe article describes the authors' experience creating silos for grain storage models in programs for finite element analysis of building structures. Particular attention is paid to the thin‐walled structures of the silo's vertical walls, considered an orthotropic shell of revolution. The shell is orthotropic because the silo walls are made of sinusoidal corrugated sheets and reinforced with vertical stiffeners. The direct calculation of such shells in finite element analysis programs is associated with great computational difficulties (especially in problems of geometrically nonlinear analysis). Therefore, an alternative method is proposed for creating design models of silos, which allows, without loss of analysis accuracy, to significantly reduce the dimension of models and analysis time, thereby increasing the efficiency of structural analysis. The method is helpful for the analysis silos for non‐axisymmetric loads associated with a moment stress‐strain state in the silo walls. Non‐axisymmetric actions are loads from the filling and discharge of the silos, wind effects and loads from blast waves.

As participatory mapping evolves encompassing new technologies and incorporating new terminology to describe varying approaches, it is important to examine whether all practitioners of participatory mapping belong to the same community of practice guided by shared principles. The researchers explore the narrative of participatory mapping as a coherent, unified discipline. They do this by assessing the landscape of the literature on participatory mapping practices across two scholarly search platforms – Google Scholar and Web of Science. In each platform, they searched the same terms that are commonly associated with participatory mapping. The researchers' findings suggest participatory mapping lacks coherence as a unified method. They note a lack of overlap in top cited publications, indicating that what counts as legitimate knowledge regarding participatory mapping and its practice differs depending on the platform. Implications for participatory mapping theory and practice are discussed.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine how information professionals in Scotland and in European national libraries perceive linked data (LD) as well as if and how they are implementing it. Design/methodology/approach The authors applied four data collection techniques: a literature review, semi-structured interviews (n=15), online resources analysis (n=26) and an online survey (n=113). They used constant comparative analysis to identify perceived benefits and challenges of LD implementation, reasons behind adoption or non-adoption of LD and the issues hindering its implementation in libraries. Findings Some projects demonstrate LD’s potential to augment the visibility and discoverability of library data, alongside with overcoming linguistic barriers, and supporting interoperability. However, a strong need remains to demonstrate the Semantic Web’s potential within libraries. Participants identified lack of expertise and lack of resources/time/staff as implementation barriers. Several other issues remain unsolved, such as licensing constraints, as well as difficulties with obtaining management buy-in for LD initiatives, even where open data are government-mandated. Practical implications Information professionals and vendors should collaborate to develop tools for implementation. Advocacy through disseminating and reviewing successful implementations can help to solve practical difficulties and to obtain management buy-in. Originality/value This is the first known study to present a multinational, comprehensive picture of library LD implementations and associated librarians’ perceptions of LD.

Resumen
In 1995, Spain’s National Network of Silos and Granaries was divided into a basic network and a secondary network. Of the total storage units identified, 541 are vertical units or silos forming part of the secondary network. Unlike the silos of the basic network, many of the secondary network silos, which were primarily reception units sited near the areas where the grain was grown, have been repurposed. This article describes a methodology developed to inventory silos based on their general features, construction and technological facilities, and its application to the 123 silos in the secondary network in the Spanish region of Castilla y León. The exercise was conducted in conjunction with a socioeconomic analysis of the communities where the silos are located. All the silos studied are located in the most productive areas and close to farms, have small storage capacities and include all but one silo typology, the transition macro-silo. Some are still used for grain storage, whilst others have been converted into multi-purpose warehouses, gymnasiums, community centres or other specialised facilities. Ideas for silo repurposing implemented in other regions of Spain and other countries might well be applied in Castilla y León. In addition, this methodology has proved useful to identify proposals that are viable in the more highly populated communities.

Resumen
Reinforced concrete grouped silos-commonly employed in the industry to store granular materials- also needs to be designed in earthquake-prone areas. Silos experience a higher rate of structural failures than the majority of other types of construction. And one of the main causes of silo failure is the dynamic overpressures caused by stored materials under seismic loads. However, the principles determining loads on such structures and requirements for their structural analysis aren’t precisely specified in relevant codes of design. Instead of emphasizing grouped silos that interact strongly, the present dynamic design only concentrates on a single silo which can lead to unrealistic solutions for grouped silos. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the seismic behavior of grouped silos more accurately. This paper aims to investigate the seismic behavior of RC on-ground grouped silos compared to single ones by using a numerical model because of its adaptability, which allows for the analysis of a wide range of silo problems. In this context, a three-dimensional finite element model, that considered the interaction between stored material and silo wall as well as the continuity of the silo walls, was performed using ANSYS software. Two different aspect ratios and three different internal loading cases were taken into account for the parametric study to demonstrate their influences on dynamic overpressures and equivalent base shear forces in RC-grouped silos. It is concluded that designing the on-ground slender grouped silos with a high aspect ratio as individual single silos is unreasonable and may produce very low values for the base shear force.

Resumen
The need of preserving variable products’ amount and quality the best and the longest time aroused the need of storage. Especially cereals can be stored long times without losing their quality under favorable conditions. These favorable conditions can be provided with silos for cereals. The products stored in silos to be used in times of need, must be protected well and durable. Yet, humidity and temperature like factors can make silos unsafe. With the development of technology, especially the concept of Internet of Things, silos can be monitored in real-time and kept under control. Regular silos can be turned into smart silos thanks to systems created via Internet of Things. In this study, the humidity and temperature values of the cereals in a silo created as a prototype, measured with an IoT based real-time system and data gathered were monitored instantly via a web-based software. Hence, without the need of much manpower, cereals could be kept under favorable temperature and humidity levels.

Aim of study: To analyse the 670 silos in Spain’s NNSG (National Network of Silos and Granaries), along with the changes in typologies and degree of mechanisation taking place over time.Area of study: Spain.Material and methods: Research began in 2014, collecting NNSG grain storage data across Spain further to the methodology developed by the authors. In a first stage the information was gathered from the FEGA’s general archives in Madrid and the archives of the departments of agriculture in the 13 regions where silos were built. In the second stage of the study, 665 silos were explored in situ. Photographs were taken and information was gathered on their characteristics (general features; architectural features; technological facilities).Main results: This paper discusses the architectural and typological changes taking place over time, from the earliest small, local, richly adorned brick silos to larger, more modern and austere reinforced concrete structures. The machinery with which they are fitted is also addressed, with the progression from basic grain storage to more sophisticated equipment designed to clean, refrigerate or disinfect the grain. Some facilities were used exclusively to select and condition seed for subsequent sowing. The most modern structures, known as macrosilos, are highly mechanised affairs.Research highlights: Spain’s national network of silos and granaries was 41 years in the building. The inventory of the 665 existing silos identified 20 types or subtypes. Early richly adorned units gradually gave way to more austere, functional structures. The machinery in place in silos varied with type/purpose and period of construction.

Resumen
Background: Reinforced concrete silos and bunkers are commonly used structures for large storage of different materials. These structures are highly vulnerable when subjected to intense seismic forces. Available guidelines for analysis and design of these structures require special design skills and code procedures. Objective: The current study is aimed to elaborate the design procedures from different sources to a unified method, which can be applied to a larger class of reinforced concrete silos. In this study, analysis and design procedures are summarized and presented in a simplified form to make sure the efficient practical design applications of reinforced concrete silos. Method: Four different cases of silo design based on the type and weight of stored material were considered for the study. For each case, the silo was designed using given design procedure and modeled using FEM-based computer package. All of the reinforced concrete silos were subjected to gravity, wind and seismic forces. Results: After performing the analysis and design of different silos, the bending moment, shear force and axial forces profiles were given for a sample silo. The results obtained from the proposed design procedure were compared with FEM values for different components of silos such as slab, wall and hopper. Conclusion: The comparison of tangential and longitudinal forces, bending moments, shear forces and reinforcement ratios of different parts of silos have shown a fair agreement with the FEM model results. It motivates to use the proposed design procedure for an efficient design of reinforced concrete silos.

With the WHO estimating that global medication errors cost approximately US$42 billion annually, it is perhaps not surprising that we hear a lot about medicines stewardship these days. Although the descriptions and goals of medicines stewardship vary, common themes are that it involves careful and responsible management, it is targeted at drug classes that are associated with a high risk of adverse outcomes and it aims to reduce variations in practice and improve patient outcomes.

Resumen
The eccentric discharge of stored solids in squat silos has caused many failures, especially that in metal silos. However, these failures are poorly interpreted by specialists. In particular, the lateral pressure distribution on vertical wall couldn’t be accurately recognized. In order to set out the method to calculate static lateral pressure, the appearance of stored solids in silos after eccentric discharge is researched. In this study, based on the overall balance method (OBM), the method for calculating lateral static pressure in squat silos after eccentric discharge is proposed. Four cases are listed according to different discharge stages. Calculative formulae are deducted for each case. This method is also focusing on unsymmetrical distribution characteristic of the lateral pressure. Two calculative examples are listed and the results of which illustrate the necessity of lateral pressure calculation in squat silos.

It can cause scattered dust and usually loaded with various germs that adversely affect the health of silos workersin silos. The main objective of the study is to measure microbial contamination. (bacterial, fungal, mycotoxins), which are widely prevalent in Iraqi silos and mills and negatively It affects the health of silos workers in particular and the general health of the community. The study included 40 samples of wheat grains and 40 samples of wheat flour, which were randomly collected for the winter seasons from 4 silos in Baghdad, silo Maysan and siloAL- Basra, and silo Erbil and silo Kirkuk during December and January 2022. The results indicated that the most isolated types of wheat and wheat flour are pathological spores in addition to the presence of a percentage of microbial toxins, and the chemical analysis with HPLC during the winter season showed the presence of toxic mycotoxin contamination for a number of silos, and the khan was about (76.6 ppb) by 12.5%, while the silos (cycle, coronary) were about 37.5%, with statistically significant differences (p. ≤ 0.05). The results of the statistical analysis indicated that there were statistically Statistically significant differences (p≤0.05) were recorded for wheat and flour in (temperature and humidity associated with storage,) and most of them samples contained more Coliforms and Mold than the permissible limit, while some of the samples contained an allowable percentage of mycotoxins.

Any industrial or organised storage facility needs bulk material storage structures, also referred to as bins, bunkers, silos, or tanks. The ratio of their various dimensions serves as the main defining characteristic between bunkers and silos. Silos are structures that are used for storing different types of granular material. Silos are architectural constructions made especially for storing different kinds of granular materials, such grains and cement. Silos are distinguished by their disproportionately tall lateral dimensions. For instance, massive silos are frequently used to store cement in cement mills and significant construction projects. The project's main goal is to analyse and design a silo made of reinforced cement concrete. The theory adopted for analysis of silo is Janssen’s theory. The silo is designed for storing the cement clinkers with a capacity of 5000 tonnes. The normal pressure calculation during emptying and filling, and maximum pressure calculation has performed. The hoop stresses and Temperature stresses are calculated and hoop tension is calculated for different heights. The assessment of the loads on silo was performed as per IS: 4995 (Part I) - 1974, and for design criteria IS: 4995 (Part II) – 1974 is used.

Resumen
Portugal’s EPAC (Empresa Pública do Abastecimiento dos Cereais) silo network, initially planned in the 1930s but constructed and utilised primarily in the 1970s, consisted of 31 silos with a total capacity of 841,100 t. The network’s usage declined, however, due to market liberalisation and Portugal’s accession to the European Economic Community in 1985. This study focuses on adapting a methodology to inventory and analyse the 31 silos in the EPAC network, considering their general features, construction, technological facilities, and socioeconomic aspects. The silos are situated in 30 cities and towns, predominantly in the country’s key grain-growing regions, particularly the Alentejo region. While there are variations in design and construction, most EPAC silos contain two or three rows of circular reinforced concrete cells and use the spaces between cells for storage. Their capacities range from 6000 to 35,000 t. Some are inland grain reception and storage silos, while others are larger-capacity port silos designed to unload grain rapidly onto ships using mechanical or pneumatic unloaders. These structures are a significant part of Portugal’s agro-industrial heritage and have, in some cases, been repurposed as museums or event venues. Compared to other agro-industrial buildings, silos pose unique conversion challenges due to their height and design complexities. Examples of successful reuse in countries like Spain and Italy may provide insights for potential silo projects in Portugal. However, analysis suggests that such proposals and similar initiatives may be viable only in the more highly populated towns.

Resumen
With the development of modern industry, silo diameters are bigger and bigger. Lateral pressure of bulk materials in silos is one important parameter for designing silos, which is related to the economy and safety of the structure. However, present calculation methods of the lateral pressure are mostly based on small diameter silos. For now, in the Chinese code the wall pressure computation methods are based on Rankine theory to be calculated. It is shown that the calculated results of Rankine theory may overestimate the pressure. In this paper, the lateral pressure of large diameter silos is studied. A new formula for calculating lateral static pressure on shallow silo wall is derived by static equilibrium method. The formula of this paper is simple of calculation and can be used for large diameter silos with a circular con top pile. The results agree with that of the full-sized silo experiment better than the current code.
