Resumen
Esse artigo tem como objetivo analisar a formação de um discurso de alteridade sobre o monarca zulu Cetshwayo kaMpande, contido na obra Cetshwayo’s Dutchman, de 1880, escrita pelo comerciante holandês Cornelius Vijn e pelo bispo anglicano, John William Colenso. Pautado nos aportes teóricos de François Hartog e Tzvetan Todorov sobre a retórica da alteridade, assim como no trabalho de Roger Chartier sobre representações, a análise é realizada a partir de três temáticas principais, nomeadamente a questão fronteiriça, a relação entre Cetshwayo e seus súditos e a questão missionária. É objetivo do artigo explicitar a relação da obra com a Guerra Anglo-Zulu de 1879, verificando como o relato busca responder às críticas feitas ao monarca zulu, pelo oficial inglês Sir Bartle Frere. Também é foco do artigo comentar a fonte à luz da bibliografia sobre relatos de viagem, em especial a discussão sobre o caráter dos relatos de autoria feminina e masculina, e quanto ao trabalho de Mary Louise Pratt sobre o olhar imperial.

Resumen
Sir Bartle Frere, the British High Commissioner in South Africa 1877–80, depicted Cetshwayo ka Mpande, the Zulu king 1872–9, as a bloodthirsty monster. This article discusses the accuracy and justice of this depiction, and the nature of Zulu kingship. It shows that both Frere and the missionaries on whom he relied for evidence wished to bring the Zulu kingdom under British rule and thus had a strong motive for discrediting Cetshwayo. The fact that missionary testimony against Cetshwayo was particularly hostile and abundant at times when there seemed a real possibility of British annexation casts particular doubt on the value of this testimony. Missionaries misinterpreted and exaggerated much of the evidence, which, more dispassionately examined, appears to show that, while executions were common in the Zulu kingdom, Frere's account of the nature of Cetshwayo's reign was grossly overdrawn. The territorial chiefs of the country were responsible for many of the executions, and there is evidence that Cetshwayo attempted to ameliorate conditions. Nevertheless the tendency to attribute to him the methods of nineteenth-century British constitutionalism is unhistorical and culture-bound. Cetshwayo was a Zulu king in the tradition of his uncle Shaka, and ruled by fear and arbitrariness as well as by the law.

AbstractWilder Penfield and the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) are inextricably linked. It was Penfield’s unique idea to create a building with an academic atmosphere wherein basic neuroscience and clinical care of neurological patients would benefit from interaction and mutual support. It is clear that without Penfield that there would be no MNI; however, the role of another Canadian icon, Sir Arthur Currie, in the development of the MNI has heretofore been barely mentioned. The thesis of this paper is that Currie had a critical role in the gestation of the MNI that has generally been ignored.

A noção de beleza na infância e as práticas de embelezamento direcionadas às meninas foram analisadas a partir das dicas da Barbie, veiculadas no livro de Fabiane Ariello (2007). Nas orientações da boneca, encontramos materiais escritos e visuais que permitiram dimensionar as produções de significados para o que é ser bela e como tornar-se bela. Nelas, vislumbramos os trânsitos entre as condutas de cuidados estéticos e o consumo de bens e produtos da moda, em específico de serviços relacionados às aparências e de artefatos/objetos da indústria cosmética. Tais artefatos indicam um padrão de beleza que interfere na construção da identidade de gênero e na educação das meninas no período da infância.

Un tema importante en los estudios del arte prehispánico es la interconexión entre las diferentes dimensiones de la realidad mexicana, es decir, del México precolombino y del moderno, debido a que revela muchas nociones y conceptos acerca de su pasado prehis-pánico —particularmente en lo que respecta a los mexicas, también conocidos como aztecas en el mundo anglosajón—, y que hoy se tienen como ciertos en la academia americanista. Una vez que el mundo precolombino fue dominado antiguas imágenes codicadas, que poseían un sentido y signicado determinado, fueron traducidas al pensamiento y a la escritura europea para ser adaptadas e incrus-tadas en nociones europeas, hasta ocultanalmente destruir su signicado original. En diferentes grados, con diferentes consecuen-cias, fragmentos de un pasado precolombino han sido reensamblados en una mezcolanza, como se puede ejemplicar en el estudio de la muñeca Barbie como una “princesa azteca” tal y como fue concebida por uno de los principales fabricantes de juguetes estadounidense. Cada elemento y sus ramicaciones —contexto, embalaje, vestido, joyas, postura, entre otros temas— pueden ser diseccionados y analizada la reconguración de elementos en un nuevo contexto para exponer cómo unagura históricacticia se convirtió en una muñeca temática y la manera en la que una serie de antiguos prototipos mexicanos, recopilados de diversas culturas precolombinas (azteca, maya, mixteca), han sido desplazados y reestructurados con la aparición de Barbie como una interpretación incongruente de una princesa azteca que vive en Palenque en el mercado de juguetes contemporáneo, conformando así la imaginación y el conocimiento de niñas y coleccionistas de muñecas de todo el mundo.

Cell division is often regulated by extracellular signaling networks to ensure correct patterning during development. InArabidopsis, the SHORT-ROOT (SHR)/SCARECROW (SCR) transcription factor dimer activatesCYCLIND6;1(CYCD6;1) to drive formative divisions during root ground tissue development. Here, we show plasma-membrane-localized BARELY ANY MERISTEM1/2 (BAM1/2) family receptor kinases are required forSHR-dependent formative divisions andCYCD6;1expression, but notSHR-dependent ground tissue specification. Root-enriched CLE ligands bind the BAM1 extracellular domain and are necessary and sufficient to activateSHR-mediated divisions andCYCD6;1expression. Correspondingly, BAM-CLE signaling contributes to the restriction of formative divisions to the distal root region. Additionally, genetic analysis reveals that BAM-CLE and SHR converge to regulate additional cell divisions outside of the ground tissues. Our work identifies an extracellular signaling pathway regulating formative root divisions and provides a framework to explore this pathway in patterning and evolution.

Growth and survival rates (specific growth rate &ndash; SGR; survival rate &ndash; S) of Barbus barbus&nbsp;L. were recorded in captivity during three years from the larval period (final body weight &ndash; W = 0.2 &plusmn; 0.03&nbsp;g; SGR&nbsp;= 13.6 &plusmn; 1.1%/day and cumulative survival &ndash; S = 76.0 &plusmn; 2.5%) to the first reproductive season (W&nbsp;=&nbsp;62.55&nbsp;&plusmn; 13.5 g; SGR = 0.89 &plusmn; 0.05%/day; S = 59.3 &plusmn; 1.5%). Final body size and SGR were compared between both sexes. Females reached the significantly higher growth rate (SGR = 0.84 &plusmn; 0.01%/day) compared to males (SGR = 0.77 &plusmn; 0.01%/day). Early puberty was observed in 17 and 32 months old males and females, respectively. Multi-stripping activity was found out in both sexes during the first reproductive season. In total, 20%, 25.8%, 30.3%, 14.6% and 9% of females were stripped once, twice and three, four and five times, respectively. But all males produced sperm during the entire reproductive season. The highest and the lowest egg production was recorded in the middle (April) and at the beginning (March) of the reproductive season (2155&nbsp;&plusmn; 925 vs. 1279 &plusmn; 298 eggs per stripping). The highest and the lowest sperm production was observed at the beginning (March) and at the end (May) of the reproductive season (7.9 &plusmn; 0.08 &times; 10<sup>9</sup> vs. 1.9 &plusmn; 0.06 &times;&nbsp;10<sup>9</sup> per stripping).

Resumen

I "Myten som argumentationsbas" har jag utgått från de perspektiv som finns inom den retoriska kunskapstraditionen. Utifrån dessa perspektiv har jag sökt svar på frågeställningen: Hur övertygar man någon som ser världen på ett annat sätt?

Studien resulterade i en modell för övertygande som fokuserar på etablerandet av en gemensam argumentationsbas mellan retorn och den andre. I samband med bearbetningen av denna modell prövade jag om Roland Barthes idé om myten kunde användas för att ge en fördjupad förståelse för vad en retorisk argumentationsbas är. Svaret på den frågeställningen blev ett tydligt: Ja.

Barthes teori om myten stämde väl överens med den retoriska kunskapstraditionen, dess teoretiska grund kunde bidra till en förbättrad förståelse av enskilda övertygandeprocesser och teorin visade dessutom på möjliga retoriska strategier för att övertyga en person som ser världen på ett annat sätt.

Utöver detta kunde jag även visa hur myten fungerade som ett komplement till det etablerade retoriska begreppet doxa. Detta genom att myten är partikulär och kan kopplas till specifika fenomen, medan doxan är mer generell. Myten som teoretiskt perspektiv visade sig därmed vara väl lämpat för att retoriskt förklara argumentationsbasens funktion i enskilda övertygandeprocesser. I denna studie beläggs således  att Barthes idé om myten har något att tillföra den retoriska kunskapsteorin.

Resumo : Uma boneca eternamente jovem conseguiu atravessar décadas sem mostrar marcas do tempo. Onde a imortal Barbie esconde um dos horrores contemporâneos, a velhice? Onde podemos achar sua imagem defeituosa, envergonhada, aprisionada e escondida para que a beleza da boneca triunfe e não pare de ser multiplicada e vendida no mundo todo? Há um quadro não visto, que não é vendido nas lojas, exposto em livros ou estampado nas embalagens da boneca. Há histórias de mulheres que abdicaram suas vidas para que Barbie não definhasse. Investiram esforços para criar uma atmosfera de magia na qual Barbie pudesse sobreviver. O quadro oculto de Barbie também precisa ser revelado, pois não é possível acreditar que essa face singela, terna e loura transpire tanta beleza e inocência. Este trabalho analisa o sucesso da boneca Barbie, os mecanismos publicitários que configuram sua personalidade versátil e os modelos de feminilidade apresentados às garotas. É, desse modo, um trabalho que reflete acerca dos modos de educar meninas
Abstract : A forever young doll was able to live through decades without showing the signs of time. Where does the immortal Barbie hide one of the contemporary horrors, the elderliness? Where can we find her ¿defective¿, bashful, imprisoned and hidden image so that the doll¿s beauty triumphs and endlessly can be multiplied and sold all over the world? There is a non seen picture, which is not sold in the stores, exposed in books or printed in the doll¿s packages. There are stories of women who abdicated their lives so that Barbie didn¿t emaciate. They invested efforts to create a magic atmosphere in which Barbie could survive. The hidden picture of Barbie needs to be revealed too, because it is hard to believe that this simple, tender and blond face leaks so much beauty and innocence out. This study analyses the Barbie doll success, the advertising mechanisms that form her multi-faced personality and the models of feminity presented to girls. Thus it is a study that thinks about the ways to educate girls

Resumen

I uppsatsen studeras representationen av William Shakespeares pjäs Hamlet i affischsammanhang. Ett antal Hamletaffischer från 1900-talet framtill 2008 beskrivs, tolkas och analyseras. Fokus ligger främst på det aktuella anslaget från 2008 års produktion på Dramaten i Stockholm. Bakgrunden innehåller kortare teoriavsnitt om klassisk och visuell retorik, bildstruktur, semiotik samt affischens historia och roll i dag. En kortare beskrivning av pjäsens handling ger en naturlig ingång till den kortare presentationen av samtliga affischer som följer. I analysen studeras Hamlet från 2008 i en djupare dimension, där en analysmodell av Roland Barthes tillämpas på ett detaljerat plan. Därefter följer en jämförande analys med tidigare affischer, vilket avslutningsvis följs av en sammanfattande diskussion kring tidigare affischer och hur dess framtida representation kan tänkas ta form.

In this work were studied the action of ionizing radiation on the physical-mechanical properties in elastomeric compounds based on styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) filled with barite, opening way for application of these composites in the protection and shield against high-energy radiation, in the form of aprons. These aprons come to substitute the elastomeric ones with lead filler in ergonomic and economically advantageous conditions. The effect of high-energy radiation was studied on SBR compounds filled with barite at 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150phr (phr = parts per hundred rubber) of barite concentrations, exposed to ionizing radiation at 0, 100, 200, 500 and 1000kGy doses. The samples were characterized by physic-mechanical tests as rheometry, tensile strength, resilience, hardness, wear resistance, oil absorption, permanent deformation under compression (compression set) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The morphological characteristics were determined by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the radiation causes an increase in tensile strength and elongation, the tear strength and hardness, and a decrease in fluid absorção and deformation under compression.
Neste trabalho foi estudada a ação da radiação ionizante nas propriedades físico-mecânicas nos compostos elastoméricos a base de estireno-butadieno (SBR) carregados com barita, abrindo caminho para aplicação destes compostos na proteção e blindagem contra a radiação alta energia, na forma de aventais, vindo substituir os aventais a base de elastômero carregado com chumbo em condições ergonômicas e economicamente vantajosas. Foi estudado o efeito da radiação ionizante em compostos a base de SBR carregado com barita nas concentrações de 50, 75, 100, 125, e 150phr (phr = partes por cem de borracha) de barita expostos à radiação ionizante nas doses de 0, 100, 200, 500 e 1000kGy. As amostras foram caracterizadas por meio de ensaios físico-mecânicos de reometria, de resistência à tração, resiliência, dureza, resistência ao rasgo, absorção de óleo, deformação permanente sob compressão (compression set) e ensaios de análise térmica dinâmico-mecânica. As características morfológicas dos compositos foram determinadas por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados mostraram que a radiação provoca um aumento da resistência à tração, do alongamento sob tração, da resistência ao rasgamento e da dureza; e um decréscimo na absorção de fluido e na deformação sob compressão.

In this study it was studied the physical-mechanical properties of elastomers based on styrenebutadiene rubber (SBR) with the addition of barite, for application of these compounds in protecting in the shielding against radiation X, for the substitution of aprons form based on elastomer fillered with lead in ergonomic and economically advantageous conditions. Elastomeric compounds were studied with different barite concentrations [50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 phr (parts for hundred of rubber)]. The studied properties were: tensile strength, tensile modulus, tear strength, permanent deformation in compression, hardness, absorption of fluid, resilience, measure of rheology, morphological analysis and characterization of attenuating materials to radiation X. Results showed that all compositions exhibit good dispersion of the filler in the matrix. It was observed that with the increase barite concentration there is an increase in hardness beyond not causing significant alteration in the tensile strenght, in the elasticity, as well as in the resistance to the tearing of the material.
Neste trabalho foram estudadas as propriedades físico-mecânicas de elastômeros a base de borracha de estireno-butadieno (SBR) com a adição de barita, para aplicação destes compostos na proteção de blindagem contra a radiação X, para a substituição de aventais a base de elastômeros carregados com chumbo em condições ergonômicas e economicamente vantajosas. Foram estudados compostos elastoméricos com diferentes concentrações de barita [50, 75, 100, 125 e 150 phr (partes por cem de borracha)]. Entre as propriedades estudadas destacam-se: resistência à tração, módulo sob tração, resistência ao rasgo, deformação permanente à compressão, dureza, absorção de fluido, resiliência, medida de reologia, análise morfológica e caracterização de materiais atenuadores à radiação X. Os resultados mostraram que todas as composições apresentam uma boa dispersão da carga na matriz. Observou-se que com o aumento da concentração de barita há um aumento na dureza além de não causar alteração significativa na resistência à tração, na elasticidade, bem como na resistência ao rasgamento do material.

From 1968 to 1991 the acclaimed film theorist Christian Metz wrote several remarkable books on film theory: Essais sur la signifi cation au cinéma, tome1 et 2; Langage et cinéma; Le signifiant imaginaire; and L’Enonciation impersonnelle. These books set the agenda of academic film studies during its formative period. Metz’s ideas were taken up, digested, refined,reinterpreted, criticized and sometimes dismissed, but rarely ignored. This volume collects and translates into English for the first time a series of interviews with Metz, who offers readable summaries,elaborations, and explanations of his sometimes complex and demanding theories of film. He speaks informally of the most fundamental concepts that constitute the heart of film theory as an academic discipline — concepts borrowed from linguistics, semiotics, rhetoric, narratology, and psychoanalysis. Within the colloquial language of the interview, we witness Metz’s initial formation and development of his film theory. The interviewers act as curious readers who pose probing questions to Metz about his books, and seek clarification and elaboration of his key concepts. La prospettiva dell’età moderna nacque come un ponte gettato tra l’arte e la scienza. Essa dava necessità all’arte e rendeva visibile la scienza; il terreno di coltura fu quello dell’architettura, che da sempre impegnava in sinergia i cultori dell’una e dell’altra. L’ambito di pensiero in cui fu concepita si occupava degli argomenti più alti, l’universo e la terra: a partire dagli astronomi-geografi e dai topografi, si è costruita nel tempo come disciplina e metodo scientifico-artistico, derivando sistematicamente teoremi da teoremi, in un crescendo di complessità, che ha assunto forme talvolta acrobatiche, non aperte all’evidenza. Le tecniche prospettiche sviluppate nel tempo hanno accompagnato le figure dell’architettura e del figurativo nei loro mutamenti. Le attuali tecnologie informatiche ci permettono oggi di studiare i modelli di questo ambito artistico con la fiducia di poter portare alla luce una storia nuova su di esso. Questo volume raccoglie i saggi di 44 ricercatori che, all’interno di un Progetto Nazionale bandito nel 2011, coordinato da Riccardo Migliari di Roma, hanno aderito alla chiamata del gruppo fiorentino, di cui è responsabile Maria Teresa Bartoli, per illustrare il loro metodo di approccio culturale e tecnico al tema attraverso un caso-studio: fosse esso rappresentato da un dipinto o dai passi di un trattato.

Quenching experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of nanoparticle deposition on boiling heat transfer during rapid quenching in long vertical tubes. SiC and graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles were deposited by boiling 0.01 vol% SiC/water and GO/water nanofluids in the vertical tube for 600 and 900 s to observe the repeatability of the nanoparticle deposition. Reflood tests were performed by passing water through bare tube and nanoparticle-coated tube at a constant flow rate (3 cm/s). Quenching curves (temperature vs. time) and saturated boiling curves were obtained at atmospheric pressure. We observed a more enhanced cooling performance in nanoparticle-coated tubes. The quenching time of tubes coated with SiC nanoparticles for 600 and 900 s were reduced by more than 20 and 25 s, respectively, compared to that of the bare tube. For the tubes boiled with GO nanoparticles for 600 and 900 s, the quenching times decreased by 10 and 12 s, respectively, compared to that of the bare tube. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images were acquired, and the contact angles were measured to observe the effects of surface structures and wettability on the cooling performance.

The influence of the Bauschinger Effect (BE) on KIN — the combined, Mode I, 3-D Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) distributions for arrays of radial, internal, surface cracks emanating from the bore of a fully or partially autofrettaged gun barrel is investigated. A thorough comparison between the combined SIFs for a “realistic” - Bauschinger Effect Dependent Autofrettage (BEDA) and those for an “ideal” - Bauschinger Effect Independent Autofrettage (BEIA) is performed. The 3-D analysis is performed via the finite element (FE) method and the submodeling technique, employing singular elements along the crack front. Both autofrettage residual stress fields, BEDA and BEIA, are simulated using an equivalent temperature field and more than 1200 different crack configurations are analyzed. SIFs for numerous crack arrays (n=1 to 64 cracks), a wide range of crack depth to wall thickness ratios (a/t=0.01 to 0.2), various ellipticities (a/c=0.5 to 1.5), several values of the yield-stress to pressure ratio (ψ=σyp/p=1.93 to 3.55) and different levels of autofrettage (ε=30% to 100%) are evaluated. The level of autofrettage efficiency for all BEDA cases is determined, and is thoroughly compared with that of BEIA. The largest combined SIF KNmax can be found at any angular location along the crack front and can reach its largest values for arrays of any number of cracks from 1 to 16, and therefore needs to be evaluated for each particular case. The Bauschinger Effect is found to have a dramatic detrimental impact on the fatigue life of the gun barrel. Even in the case were autofrettage has its minimal beneficial effect, (ψ=1.93), the BE can reduce the fatigue life of the barrel by a factor of 2 to 5. In other cases this factor can reach orders of magnitude, and in extreme cases, when autofrettage completely overcomes the pressure yielding a nil KNmax, this factor might become infinite, i.e., an infinite fatigue life for BEIA versus a finite fatigue life for BEDA. For a partially autofrettaged barrel, it is found that the lower the level of autofrettage, the smaller the Bauschinger Effect is. Increasing the level of autofrettage beyond ε=60% is found to be counterproductive, and therefore, it is not recommended.

The demand to miniaturize products especially for mobile applications and autonomous systems is continuing to drive the evolution of electronic products and manufacturing methods. To further the miniaturization of future products the integration of functions on miniaturized subsystems, i.e. System-in-Package (SiP) is a promising approach. Here, use of recent manufacturing methods allows to merge the SiP concept with a volumetric integration of IC’s. Up to now, most of the systems make use of single- or double-sided populated system carriers. A new challenge is to incorporate not only passive components, but as well active circuitry (IC’s) and the necessary thermal management. Ultra thin chips (i.e. silicon dies thinned down to &lt;50μm total thickness) lend themselves to reach these goals. Chips with that thickness can be embedded in the dielectric layers of modern laminate PCB’s. Micro via technology allows to contact the embedded chip to the outer faces of the system circuitry. The aspects of embedding and making the electrical contact as well as the thermal management are highlighted. Results on FEM simulations and technical achievements are presented.

This paper presents a study on the enhancement in the boiling heat transfer (BHT) and critical heat flux (CHF) with a bare indium tin oxide (ITO) surface, few-graphene layer deposited on an ITO surface, and silicon carbide (SiC) particles deposited on an ITO surface. The experiment was conducted in atmospheric pressure using FC-72 refrigerant at saturation. Infrared (IR) thermometry was used to determine the temperature fields of the heater surfaces and CHF. The values of CHF for the graphene layer on the ITO surface and SiC deposited on the ITO heater were increased by 9% and 42%, compared to the bare ITO heater, respectively. All the heater surfaces showed hydrophilic condition with the working fluid (FC-72 refrigerant). The enhancement in the BHT coefficient and CHF was attributed to surface modifications such as the formation of microporous structures and the material properties.
