Hundreds of white Southerners traveled to Gold Rush California with slaves. Long after California became a free state in 1850, these masters transplanted economic and social practices that sustained slavery in the American South to the goldfields. At the same time, enslaved people realized that Gold Rush conditions disrupted customary master-slave relationships and pressed for more personal autonomy, better working conditions, and greater economic reward. The result was a new regional version of slavery that was remarkably flexible and subject to negotiation. This fluidity diminished, however,

ABSTRACT Taiwan is rich in geothermal energy, which mainly distributes in the slate area. Due to the high anisotropy and heterogeneity of slate, the properties of rock mass are quite different from isotropic rock. This study conducted a discrete element analysis to evaluate the damage area of hydraulic stimulation in the slate for the operation of a geothermal power plant. A failure criterion for slate incorporated with a transversely isotropic model was established to describe the behavior of slate. The developed model was validated using a benchmark problem of geothermal techniques under an

The paper presents the solutions of the Law on Companies of the Republic of Serbia, on cross-border merger and acquisition of companies. The provisions regulating this very important area were adopted in 2018 in the amendments to the Law on Companies, but their implementation was postponed until January the 1st, 2025. As this date approaches, we believe that it is necessary to point out new legal solutions that will affect the procedures of merger of companies based in the Republic of Serbia and capital companies from a Member State of the European Union or a signatory state to the Treaty on t

Climate change is a global problem with serious social, economic and distributional effects on the environment. It is one of the main current challenges for humanity. Changing climate conditions in the long term, as well as short-term fluctuations and non-standard variation of temperature characteristics, have a significant impact on the behavior of pavement structure. Since the end of the 19th century, average temperatures have risen to 0.6 C. The article describes the results of measurements and evaluations of non-standard climatic situations occurring in the territory of Slovakia and the a

Purpose – The article is devoted to the problem of training specialists in the field of humanitarian science, especially aggravated in the context of educational reforms and digital transition. The excessive digitalization of social spheres, in particular, education, without a clear understanding of the possible consequences will lead to the fact that the specialists' training quality will be lower than the demands dictated by the economy. Design/methodology – The article has been built a model of the educational process, which includes three stages: school, university, and the stage of profes

Bridges are critical components of transportation infrastructure. This research addresses the need to extend the service life of bridges by improving the safety and reliability of bridge abutments and reducing their life-cycle cost and footprints. Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) is a known strategy to enhance the economy and performance of bridge abutments. In addition, the application of rotary-kiln-manufactured lightweight aggregate backfills improves the performance of MSE bridge abutments with a leaner structural system. Such improvements include a reduction of structural demands due t
