Resumen
This diploma project aims to explore the importance of details and small gestures in architecture.  Whether its a technical detail, a choice of material or a lighting fixture, these seemingly small gestures all influence how we experience a room. It is my belief that these little details, can make a big difference to how we experience our everyday life and that they communicate care and thoughtfulness. What difference does a minor change in material, division of space or a door handle do to the experience of a room as a whole; which are those small gestures that show care and thoughtfulness?  The project has explored details and small gestures in three categories: Division of space, Materiality &amp; Elements, partially though case studies of renowned buildings from architects such as Alvar Aalto, Josef Frank and Sigurd Lewerentz, as well as though the proposal of a redesign of the courthouse of Katrineholm, into a Municipal Archive. The redesign tested small gestures in relationship the room as a whole, to each other and to its surroundings.  “We should work for simple, good, undecorated things, but things which are in harmony with the human being and organically suited to the little man in the street” - Alvar Aalto<br>Detta examensarbete ämnar utforska vikten av detaljer och små gester inom arkitekturen. “We should work for simple, good, undecorated things, but things which are in harmony with the human being and organically suited to the little man in the street” - Alvar Aalto

Resumen
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2010.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 189-190).<br>The United States Air Force and commercial aerospace industry recognize the importance of moving towards smaller, better, and cheaper spacecraft to support the nation's increasing dependence on space-based technologies. Whether large or small, all spacecraft will require the same basic bus systems and environmental protection, simply scaled to fit the mission. The varying thermal environment in space is particularly important to spacecraft design and operation because of its affect on hardware performance and survivability. The Adaptive Thermal Modeling Architecture (ATMA) discussed in this thesis is meant to bridge the gap between the commercially available thermal modeling tools used for larger, more expensive satellites, and the low-fidelity algorithms and techniques used for simple first order analysis. The ATMA consists of the MATLAB based Adaptive Thermal Modeling Tool (ATMT) and its user's manual, as well as the process by which an inexperienced engineer can quickly and accurately perform on-orbit thermal trades studies for a range of space applications. The ATMA tools and techniques have been validated with an industry standard thermal modeling program (Thermal Desktop) and correlated to thermal test data taken from MIT's CASTOR nanosatellite. The concepts derived and evaluated within ATMA can be extended to a variety of aerospace modeling applications. The ATMT program and modeling architecture are currently being utilized by members of MIT's Space Engineering Academy (SEA) and undergraduate satellite team as well as the U.S. Air Force Academy's FalconSAT-6 program.<br>by John Anger Richmond.<br>S.M.

Gulen, Burak. "Architecture and core of the small ribosomal subunit." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/54884.

Texto completo
Resumen
The ribosome is one of the most universal molecular machinery, synthesizing proteins in all living systems. The small ribosomal subunit plays a crucial role in decoding the messenger RNA during translation. We propose and validate a new architectural model of the ribosomal small subunit, with broad implications for function, biogenesis and evolution. We define an rRNA domain: compact and modular, stabilized by self-consistent molecular interactions, with ability to fold autonomously when it is isolated from surrounding RNA or protein. Each rRNA helix must be allocated uniquely to a single domain. These criteria identify a core domain of small subunit rRNA (domain A), which acts as a hub, linking to all other domains by A-form helical spokes. Experimental characterization of isolated domain A, and mutations and truncations of it, by methods including selective 2’OH acylation analyzed by primer extension and circular dichroism spectroscopy are consistent with autonomous folding, and therefore classification as a domain. We show that the domain concept is applicable and useful for understanding the small ribosomal subunit. Our results support the utility of the concept of the domain as applied to at least some RNAs, the interdependence of the elements of domain A, and its ability to fold autonomously. Moreover, domain A, which exhibits elements of tRNA mimicry, is the essential core of the small ribosomal subunit. Understanding the structure and dynamics of domain A will provide valuable insight into the translational machinery.

Additionally, these whole-timbers have a lower effective embodied carbon than any other structural material. When combined into efficient structural configurations and joined using specially-engineered connections, whole-timber has the potential to replace entire steel and concrete structural systems in large-scale buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. Whole-timber may be the most appropriate structural solution for a low-carbon and fully renewable future in both developed temperate regions and the developing Global South. To reduce barriers to adoption, including project complexity and cost, a standardized "kit of parts" in whole-timber is proposed. This thesis proposes new designs for the first and most important element of this kit: a structurally independent column in whole-timber. A 20' compound column in whole-timber is prototyped at full-scale. New, simple calculation methods are developed for estimating the buckling capacity of tapered timbers. Based on conservative assumptions, the embodied carbon of whole-timber column systems is shown to be between 30% and 70% lower than conventional steel systems.<br>by Aurimas Bukauskas.<br>S.B.

Shapiro, Elaine Elizabeth. "Collapse mechanisms of small-scale unreinforced masonry vaults." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/72648.

Resumen
Thesis (S.M. in Building Technology)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2012.<br>This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Cataloged from student submitted PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 61-63).<br>The structural behavior of masonry arches under various forms of loading is well-studied; however, the three-dimensional behavior of barrel vaults and groin vaults is not as well understood. This thesis aims to address this problem by performing scale model testing of barrel and groin vaults as a complement to analytical solutions. The behavior of the model vaults are observed in four cases: (1) spreading supports, (2) vertical point loads applied at various locations of the vault's geometry, (3) point loads applied to an initially deformed vault, and (4) horizontal acceleration through tilting. In all cases, extensive experimental testing is carried out on a subset of three model vaults: two barrels and one groin vault, all with the same radius and thickness ratio but with different angles of embrace. High-speed cameras are used to capture the collapse mechanism of the vaults. The analyses include equilibrium methods executed through Excel and Matlab programs, publicly available online applets for arch stability, and hand calculations. The testing and analysis carried out in this thesis reveal several properties that can be used by engineers studying existing structures. First, a groin vault's spreading capacity is determined by the constituent barrel vault that is spreading. This simplifies the analysis to a two-dimensional problem. Second, the load capacity of a barrel vault is linearly proportional to the initial deformation in span. So, if a vault experiences a span increase that is 25% of the maximum it can withstand, its load capacity decreases by 25%. Nearly all vaults have experienced deformations due to settlement over time and will therefore respond differently to loading than a perfect vault which is the common starting point in analysis. This work can be applied to the understanding and maintenance of masonry vaults in service throughout the world.<br>by Elaine Elizabeth Shapiro.<br>S.M.in Building Technology

Lim, Timothy M. "A MODULAR ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE FOR SMALL SPACECRAFT." UKnowledge, 2016. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/ece_etds/90.

Texto completo
Resumen
Small satellites and CubeSats have established themselves within the aerospace community because of their low cost and high return on investment. Many CubeSats are developed in a short time frame and often leverage commercial off the shelf components for quick turnaround missions. With regard to the Electrical Power System, commercially available products typically use a centralized architecture. However, a centralized architecture is not reusable, since missions that require additional solar arrays or batteries would necessitate a redesign of the power system. With the range of CubeSat sizes and mission goals, it is obvious that a one-size-fits-all solution is not appropriate. This thesis details a reusable and scalable power system architecture applicable to a variety of missions. Reusability is achieved by using common building blocks or "modules," where the same modules can be used between missions. Scalability is achieved by not limiting the number of modules that can be connected together—more modules can be added as needed. In this system, solar arrays and battery units connect directly to a common bus, supplying an unregulated voltage to each subsystem. These subsystems then regulate the bus voltage to their individual needs. The power system also features direct energy transfer and solar-only operation.

Rust, Thomas C. "Architecture, economics, and identity in Romano-British 'small towns'." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30808.

Resumen
An area overlooked in recent research is the meaning of architecture in the ill-defined category of sites known as small towns. Using the social psychology approaches of identity theory, social identity theory, and operant conditioning, this study examines the impact of Roman imperialism and the socio-economic changes that occurred on the island as reflected in the choice of architecture. Focusing on small towns is problematic due to difficulties with definition and site categorization. However, as settlements that were more complex than simple villages but more organic than the larger cities, they provide an opportunity to measure the socio-economic impact of Roman imperialism in the rural countryside. This thesis examines the meaning of architectural variation in small towns by investigating the shifting use of construction techniques and building types in comparison with personal artifacts. Data was collected from published site reports and entered into a simple geo-spatial database where broad trends were analyzed to reveal general patterns over space and time. Detailed case studies were then examined from sites that showed some shared characteristics in this initial analysis. Different patterns became evident that were not solely attributable to site type, size, economics, or local geology and reveal the negotiation of personal identity in the context of Roman imperialism. As a supplementary example, architectural variation on the better documented American frontier provided a comparison for socio-economic change on the Roman frontier. The choice of architecture styles by the inhabitants of Romano-British small towns had different meanings given the unique set of economic and social forces they encountered. The inhabitants of these sites negotiated their personal identities in relation to the civic identities of the settlement in which they lived and were affected by economic, social, and imperial forces.

De, Silva Nushelle (Dinuki Nushelle). "Assembling smallness : the American Small Industries Exhibition, Ceylon 1961." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/99271.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2015.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 134-141).<br>The American Small Industries Exhibition was the first instance during the Cold War wherein the USA assembled a solo exhibit outside the framework of an established trade fair. It toured three nonaligned nations between 1958 and 1961: India, Ghana, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Ceylon's political climate was suffused with mounting anti-West sentiment, and the exhibition constitutes one of the few moments of sustained interaction between Ceylon and the USA. Using the exhibition's nomenclature as a provocation, this thesis examines the Small Industries Exhibition's aspirations in relation to political realities of 1960s Ceylon. Its aims were apparently clear: to support industrialisation and establish trade ties with three non-aligned, socialist-leaning nations shifting from an agricultural to an industrial economy. It was intended to serve as a clear endorsement of capitalistic modernisation, while refuting the socialist, state-centred models of development embodied in multi-year planning documents released by each of the three host countries. Descriptions of the fair, however, are contradictory and unexpected, commencing with the unusual presentation of the USA as a wellspring of small-scale industry. This thesis disassembles the exhibition into its many components, making a case for studying the very small to illuminate the very large. When examined closely, objects on view project a range of messages and betray a vast array of physical and ideological infrastructures. However, the thesis also examines the slender site of the suture - the manner in which objects and agents are assembled and deployed - not only to understand the composition of these contradictions, but also to read the act of translation. It argues that to dissect these assemblages is to peel away at the constructed line of the 'national' boundary, prompting an examination of knowledge transfers, affinities, and differences that are simultaneously local and transnational in their scope and impact. In particular, the thesis examines the fragmented, contingent, conflicting processes that are gathered together and described as modernisation, and challenges the measures used to divide the globe into 'developed' and 'developing' nations.<br>by Nushelle de Silva.<br>S.M.

Resumen
<p> For thesis, I will explore the resurgence of public markets in a variety of settings by analyzing branding strategies and design features that mold tradition to contemporary tastes. Our contemporary culture has a love affair with food. Not only are chefs celebrities but our society is more conscientious of food preparation and origins. This emerging interest started a revolution in public markets. Public markets are not a &ldquo;new&rdquo; idea. They have been in existence for centuries. Beyond providing food for the local community, they are responsible for providing improved economic factors and more social opportunities than supermarket shopping. The new markets are considered food entertainment establishments. Many of them have bars, restaurants, and cooking classes added for a sophisticated shopping experience. Thankfully, our society has a had a shift in the way we spend our money and time. Food offers a way for people to connect with themselves as well as each other. Being a more sophisticated audience, design has become a crucial element in establishing a successful business. Sleek construction and nods to historic origins give an authentic vibe to markets while integrating modern conveniences like refrigeration. Branding and Packing also play a role. Consumers have so many options that marketing and image attract customers and illustrate the artisanal properties of markets today. By analyzing the history of public markets both foreign and domestic, I will illustrate how they have come full circle in their usefulness, contributing to local economies and societal changes. </p><p> For my proposed project, I would like to illustrate how to bring the modern public market into a suburban setting. Using all the attributes such as farm-to-table sourcing, con- struction, branding, and design I would like to represent the public market in an area with less population and analyze how it would affect the surrounding environment. For guidance on the process, I will analyze the following design and architecture firms, Edens, Jensen Architects, and AvroKO. </p><p> My research up until this point has included but is not limited to the following: Books, social media, online references, and site visits. Thankfully, I have at least one historical public market in close proximity, Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. The new trendy version of a public market is Union Market, located in NoMa neighborhood. </p><p> Originally, public markets were conceived out of necessity. Farmers needed a centralized means of selling and distribution of products and materials. Consumers did not have cars and modern supermarkets had yet to be invented. Thus, public markets came into existence and did much more for the community than provide a means to purchase food. They became a means to support the community by providing economic and social enrichment. Patrons and vendors created a sense of community. Good design fosters functionality and success of a market. </p><p> In conclusion, public markets have a positive effect on local economy, providing healthy food alternatives, employment opportunities and a sense of community pride.</p>

Kühn, Heinrich 1951. "A sub-systems approach to small lot single-family housing." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/75526.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1988.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 140-142).<br>The trends and preferences explored in this work indicate that the "American Dream" of a single-family detached house is still the preferred housing model. In-order to achieve this goal most home buyers will have to accept a transformed version of this model in the form of small lot housin~. The housing industry on the other hand, must be very creative and innovative to incorporate the housing trends and preferences into designs that are both affordable and still recognizable as the all American single-family detached house. The breakdown of a dwelling into Sub-Systems (Shell/Infill) that is explored in this work introduces a hierarchy of SubSystems that is based on the concept of control and variety. In American society it is the aspect of variety rather than control that is stressed as the dominant factor. In today's technology, and design approach it is often only the furniture that is easily adaptable to user needs. All other Sub-Systems once installed, are difficult to change or to separate. The Shell/Infill Sub-Systems concept as applied in this work makes it possible for the house to be much more adaptable. The implementation of the Sub-Systems concept would allow the developer /builder to provide the variety and diversity the market expects on a customized bases. It would also make it possible to respond to shifts in demographic and housing demands.<br>by Heinrich Kuhn.<br>M.S.

Suri, Sagarika. "Decentralizing urbanization : harnessing the potential of small cities in India." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/65747.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2011.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 113-117).<br>Perceived as symbols of national development or degeneration, megacities continue to dominate discourse and action related to urbanization, particularly in developing countries like India. Simultaneously, a large portion of urbanized space continues to be described by small and medium sized cities residing in between the rural hinterland and hyper urbanism. These cities are characterized by an intermediate and decentralized form of urbanism, often haphazard and contrasting substantially with their larger counterparts and smaller villages. Because of their size and location, small cities form a vital link within the hierarchy of settlements and are important for the diffusion of development, technology, knowledge and migration between the rural and the urban. Economic liberalization in India has been fostering new social and political mindsets which have translated into policy, governance, investment and concomitantly, urbanization strategies. An important physical manifestation is the spawning of large scale regional and national infrastructure projects-ambitious mega highways, waterways, special investment zones and industrial corridors which transect the hinterland, surround and pass through urban agglomerations and encounter many small cities along the way. Seen as catalysts of transformation befitting an emerging 'superpower', these endeavors are predicted to have contrasting effects ranging from increased connectivity, economic opportunities and growth to loss of quality of life, environmental pollution and social inequality. Regardless of the nature of consequences, small cities are set to be affected in unprecedented ways. The thesis reassesses the potential and future of small cities within this scenario and proposes strategies which utilize the proximity of large infrastructure projects to spawn interventions based on the specific conditions of the city. The historic city of Navsari, Gujarat, located along the western rail corridor and the proposed Delhi Mumbai Industrial corridor (DMIC) has been studied in greater detail to understand the effects of the mega scheme and propose interventions for a sustainable future for the city.<br>by Sagarika Suri.<br>S.M.

Olivier, Jacqueline Morrissette. "Developing the small, mixed-use urban project : contribution to neighborhood revitalization." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/76547.

Resumen
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture; and, (M.S. in Real Estate Development)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1988.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 87-88).<br>Through out many cities in America, urban neighborhoods are characterized by the diminished vitality and extensive deterioration of their overall landscape. The consequences of modem city planning, architectural design and real estate development through out the past thirty years have abrogated much of the cohesive and diverse pattern of the historic urban fabric. Today, many urban areas suffer from the endless repetition of single use structures. Others suffer from the devastating neglect of little or no investment activity at all. The intention of this thesis is to investigate the development feasibility of the small, mixed-use project. Mixed-use is a building prototype combining various uses in one structure and is typified in the appealing character of many older American and European cities. The assertion made is quite simple; if it worked then why can't it work now? The particular focus of the inquiry concentrates on poor urban neighborhoods though the prototype is relevant in other urban areas. Requisite to the formulation of the project is the aim to responsibly support and stimulate community revitalization. It is concluded that the feasibility for small mixed-use development exists though many problems remain. Design on small sites as small as one half acre is difficult but possible. Such locations are suitable particularly where they sit at major intersections between residential and commercial districts. Economically the prototype remains weak; the development risks are great. Substantial investigation to identify the most beneficial instruments for obtaining equity, reducing development costs and increasing the revenues is required for projects of this kind. Nevertheless, the small mixed-use holds an important role in the future development of the urban landscape. The prototype promises to offer a considerable contribution to the increased health and revitalization of many urban communities.<br>Jacqueline Morrissette Olivier.<br>M.S.in Real Estate Development<br>M.Arch.

This thesis has been an exploration in giving form to the many forces which come together and give a place a particular character. It is about providing an alternative to the usual public place markers of civic monuments such as town halls and churches, and instead allowing the architectural form to grow out of the existing forces These forces are in constant interaction with each other and the world around them: public and private, water and land, new and old , interior and exterior, movement, light and use. Berg, Richard Carl. "The living workplace : a conscious work environment for a small publishing company." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/42971.

Texto completo
Resumen
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1986.<br>MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH.<br>Includes bibliographies.<br>This thesis is about the oneness of working and living, and about the making of workplaces that support and encourage the idea that one's work can be an integral part of one's life. The opening position is that there is a "paradigm shift" occurring in our society which influences the way that we think about our work in relation to our lives. Rather than experiencing work as a separate entity in time and space from our home life, work can be fully engaged in our lives; an activity that requires us and interests us, which helps us to find meaning and makes us care. Our friends and families can know our work and spend time with us in our workplace. Our personalities and actions can be both similar and complimentary in the work environment and the home environment. The search in this thesis is for ways of making work environments that acknowledge our current culture, society, and technology, yet respond to and support this "new" way of working and living. This search involves an investigation into working and workplaces in pre-industrial and early industrial times: an analysis of how ·people worked and how they interacted with the settings in which they worked. This analysis provides clues which are then used to propose ways that a modern building might support an integrated attitude about living and working. The design project is for a small office building in Cambridge, Massachusetts for Linguistics International, a publisher of foreign language and computer science college textbooks, currently based in Boston. Linguistics is a suitable subject for this project for several reasons: books--information-are an important icon of our times and for our society; editing/publishing is a creative process; perhaps most importantly, the project addresses the design of white-collar office work and the office environment, the most common type of workplace in our information-based economy.<br>by Richard Carl Berg.<br>M.Arch.

This was born out of a personal fascination with the concept of informal or 'alternative-formal' economics. The existence of this concept was first brought to my attention through the Spaces of Good Hope Design + Research Studio (SoGH) in my BAS (Hons) year of 2016. Through site visits to the Delft, I became increasingly aware of an economic environment characterized by complex socio-spatial relationships. These differ from multi-layered, highly-mechanized business operations associated with more formal enterprises. The more time I spent observing business practices within Delft, the more I became aware of the sophistication of the sheer magnitude of the social networks which were the lifeblood of the embedded informal economy there. Admittedly, I found the whole system slightly overwhelming, struggling to understand how such apparent chaos could hide such a sophisticated economy, so different in shape and practices from the formal economy. It was during a SoGH plenary given by property economist, Francois Viruly, on the topic of the informal housing sector within South Africa, that I discovered how significant the informal economy is in sustaining livelihoods for a substantial portion of the country's population who cannot find jobs within the formal sector. Speaking frankly, Viruly, a highly regarded expert within the field of property economics, stressed that in spite of the prevalence of the informal economy within the South African context, both as a viable source of employment and a significant contributor to our formal economy, there is a distinct lack of understanding of the nature of the interface between formal and informal. The reality is that the existence of either formal or informal is dependent on the presence of the other, and sometimes, as is exemplified in the relationships between spazas, shebeens, and the corporate giants Coca-Cola and SAB-Miller within emerging economic areas, the links between survivalist enterprises and big corporates are critical. Clearly, economics, urban design and architecture need to come closer together - they need to inform each other. The spatial aspects of the economy require much more attention. Viruly posed an important question: "Can we create a built environment that starts at survivalist level and is sufficiently flexible to accommodate a fast-moving economy?"

Resumen
Rural towns often do not see community developments geared towards creating public spaces for multi-cultural experiences, the arts and recreation. Instead small towns are more exposed to commercial properties coming in and out the area. Introducing public spaces that offer various community activities and events will benefit people’s human and social capital. Human capital meaning skills and knowledge. Social capital meaning advantages and skills that come from interpersonal engagements (Anderson, 2004). Community centers designed for the unique needs of small towns can house programming to introduce new and rewarding opportunities for community engagement and personal development. Existing buildings within the community hold the potential to serve as community centers and adaptable interior spaces can add to a variety of programming options. The problem is the lack of community development geared towards creating public spaces for multi-cultural experiences, the arts and recreation. Small towns have limited exposure to diverse activities, events, skills sets and knowledge, along with limited spaces to support such. However older public building within small towns exist that are not being occupied or utilized to serve the community. People within small towns therefore are often restricted from acquiring a broad range of experiences and skills. To address this problem, evaluation of the current community state is necessary. This will reveal what opportunities are present and which are missing in terms of community engagement. Interviews, focus groups, and surveys are methods to gain information from the inhabitants of small towns. A diverse selection of participations will allow information to be more reflective of a wide range of ages groups, racial groups, and economic gr2wwoups. I plan to reach out to local schools for the students and staff member for participants in interviews, focus groups and electronic surveys. Examination of unoccupied buildings in small towns will reveal what facilities are available to house a potential community center. From that also assess if the interior spaces could incorporate adaptable design systems. Altogether this research will support the importance of community art centers in rural areas that offer adaptive reuse of historical building. In addition expose how the design of these building and programming show seek to support the unique needs of small towns.

Xi, Junjie. "Evaluating the functional performance of small-scale public demountable buildings." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2013. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/12133/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis investigates the design, operation and use of contemporary demountable buildings, and explores how functional performance can be assessed in small-scale examples for public use alongside with their relationship to other design elements. The research focuses on three case studies that do not require a high-technology building environment or complex construction skills. Demountable buildings are defined as those that are transported in a number of parts for assembly on site. Contemporary demountable buildings respond to ecological issues, social impacts, technological innovation and economic demands. They can be used to measure a society’s development in environmental sustainability, innovation and economic growth through various forms. Small-scale demountable buildings fulfil many temporary habitation needs in diverse roles, such as non-emergency transitional housing, ephemeral exhibition buildings and seasonal entertainment facilities. The purpose of examining functional performance is to assess if, and how, the requirements of the design have been achieved. This enables project operators to address functional performance from a public perspective by reflecting on the scope and ambition of their projects. This thesis draws on existing literature to investigate previous and on-going research relating to demountable buildings, including classification, the construction process and project management. It also examines selected existing evaluation methods that cover principles, modelling and computer-based solutions from a wider research area, including Guidelines Developed by City Council and Culture Sectors; Assessment Methods in Humanitarian Response and Methods in Environmental Assessment. The research was conducted by combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods, including field research, case studies, interviews, questionnaires and group discussions. Fragmented narratives were transformed into structured evidence, identifying models of best performance in demountable buildings and developing a new method – the Evaluation Conceptual Model – for the effective evaluation and evidencing of the value of demountable buildings in the 21st century. Recommendations for adapting a suitable model to evaluate other design elements in demountable buildings and other types of moveable buildings in further research are suggested and the findings have been used to lay the foundations for a practical evaluation tool for the future.

Resumen
Bibliography: leaves 170-182.<br>This dissertation deals with the development and implementation aspects of a semi-automated shack reconstruction strategy for informal settlement GIS (ISGIS) data collection. The main features of this stratedy include: (1) the use of color orthoimagery and digital surface model (DSM) generated from high-resoltion small-format digitial aerial imagery, (2) the separation of the shack reconstruction task into automated shack detection and interactive shack delineation, (3) the integration of multiple cues in a desktop GIS environment, and (4) the 2.5D shack modeling and the three-dimensional (3D) realistic visualization. In accordance with this strategy an informal settlement modeling system (IS-Modeler) prototype has been developed. IS-Modeler is comprised of three software components: digital photogrammetry, image analysis and GIS. The former two are used to generate multiple cues, primarily DSM blobs, shadows and attributed edge contours, the latter is used to implement shack detection, delineation and visualization.

Thesis (M. The ideals of this community are deeply rooted in its history and culture. However, the current state of small towns in general, not only in America but also in Sweden, has been transformed dramatically during the last several decades. Advancements in technology, dependence upon the automobile and the introduction of the shopping mall, have resulted in the decay of the physical and social qualities which defined these places. The public spaces of small towns, characteristically the Town square and Main street, historically have been thriving places for social interaction and places which contributed to the sense of community pride and identity which every resident could understand. Unfortunately, these are the areas which have been affected the most. This thesis project is intended to study the past, current and future state of the small town and its major public spaces, and propose, through a series of interventions, to create good quality public spaces in the form of clearly defined destinations along and at the end of the historical paths. The revitalization of these spaces, through a method of continuation of traditions and history, are vital to the future success of these places and should promote a renewed sense of community, a sense of participation and contribution to a larger whole : the town.<br>by Peter M. The first section of this work focuses on the original crossroad community that aided the surrounding county farmers with their monthly business and civic needs. This thesis researches the town's origin form and follows its growth after the introduction of the automobile, the connections brought by U.S, Highway System, the effects Industrial Revolution, movement away for an agrarian based economy, and the aftermath of being bypassed by the Interstate. This initial step is in hopes of understanding the current landscape of many of our nation's small towns, how they lost much of their civic identity, and to establish the problems which they face within today economy. The second step of this thesis is to create an urban design intervention which helps redevelop Christiansburg's civic identity. This design project replies to the town's history, existing and past urban form, programming of open space, and the community's current needs by creating a proposal that both stabilizes the community and acts as catalyst for growth. This new master plan responses to earlier research by re-centralizing many of the town's civic institutions, currently lost to land flanking the highway, and by diversifying the existing amenities and resources offered within the downtown core. The hope is by re-centering and diversifying the core many existing perceptions of downtown will change and businesses, recreation, and housing with return.<br>by James Stefhan Johnson, III.<br>S.M.

Resumen
Jane Jacobs wrote (1989, p. 92), of four similar squares near City Hall in Philadelphia, that only Rittenhouse Square was ‘beloved and successful’. Her explanation was its diversity of pedestrian generators. Other theorists, including Hillier (1999) and Gehl (2010), have given equally confident explanations of why some spaces are more popular than others. Small urban public open spaces (POS) are a problem in China as well as in the west. But POS in China tend to have different origins and to be used in different ways. This was an aspect of the research. In China there were few POS before the 20th century and a great many have been made since 1978. My research set out to develop and test a systematic assessment method which could be used (1) to test theories about POS use and use intensity (2) to assess the character and quality of individual POS in urban areas. In addition to published data, the assessment method uses criteria drawn from theorists and includes assessments of use intensity made by the researcher. The assessment method was tested on 100 small urban POS in London and Tianjin. It was found that the best theories for predicting use intensity were those which grew from empirical research, rather than from armchair theorizing. Further investigation revealed that although no one criterion has universal validity, but that particular criteria can be used to explain the popularity of particular POS. The assessment method could therefore be used to help with the problems that: (1) in China, most POS are surprisingly unpopular (2) in Europe, some POS are less popular than expected. Use intensity is the main criterion used to indicate popularity but it is recognized that other indicators (e.g. questionnaires) could be used.

Resumen
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2004.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 68-70).<br>Today, many small urban communities look to their historic downtown districts as a great resource for regenerating economic vitality and creating cultural identity. However, one common problem experienced by many of these communities lies in the incompatibility between contemporary patterns of living and the existing built fabric of these downtowns. Sociocultural shifts in the American life-style as well as shifts in our transportation patterns have created a mismatch between places of work, places of residence and places of recreation, rendering these downtown areas ill-adapted to meet contemporary patterns of living. Although the building stock in these places may adequately meet the budding demand, the fundamental inadequacy in parking facilities creates a problem limiting the potential habitation of the district. The parking infrastructure and municipal parking policies become key elements in the eventual health of these communities. Because most people who live, work, or shop in these areas own an automobile, a bottleneck occurs for those attempting to utilize the area. Vital nodes of many downtown districts tend to cluster around existing parking garages, however, these parking facilities are expensive to build, and when constructed, are often physically removed from the center of activity rendering them underutilized or they inadvertently occupy precious real estate, obliterating the continuity of the street and pedestrian activity necessary for healthy businesses. Many communities attempt to solve their needs for parking in a nearsighted manner, looking only at parking in terms of supply and demand. However, ultimately, the downtown neighborhood needs to be viewed as a type of ecosystem consisting of interrelated parts that make up a whole.<br>(cont.) Equal consideration should be given to all these parts of this urban ecology if is to develop in a sustainable fashion. Pittsfield, Massachusetts typifies this kind of community. I use the setting of Pittsfield to first address the problem at an urban design level, identifying areas for parking and mixed-use development which can be utilized to bolster investment in underdeveloped areas of downtown, to steer growth in a way which connects urban nodes, and to extend the benefits of this growth into the neighboring areas. Second, to address the issue on an architectural level, I explore the design of a prototypical parking structure, demonstrating how careful consideration of pedestrian activity to and from one's automobile can play a part in the design of the parking as well as adjacent buildings, and in turn, how these various buildings activate a healthy urban life-style. The parking garage becomes a vital piece of the city, which begins to provide a framework in and around which the Urban Ecosystem can begin to flourish. The result is a typological shift in the fabric of the downtown, one which improves the area's capacity to host the myriad of activities found in healthy urban communities. The thesis demonstrates how the design of typically mundane buildings such as parking facilities can be approached more comprehensively to facilitate and moderate the interaction between people, automobiles, and the environment.<br>by Jeffrey Taylor.<br>M.Arch.

Decision making and improved outcomes may be done through an IT aligned enterprise architecture (EA) strategy. EA is a capability that contributes to the support and success of an organisations' IT. Organisations are currently using EA to better align IT and the business strategy which provides a comprehensive v.ew of the IT system. Thus, EA is increasing in organisations yet the measurement and value of EA is limited to organisations and enterprise architects. The discussions of the benefits and value of EA has been discussed for several years, however there are still no consensus about how the benefits and value of EA can be measured. The lack and clear understanding of the benefits and value of EA needs to consider different aspects of IT as well as the shareholders when measuring the benefits and value of EA to an organisation.

Resumen
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1985.<br>MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 91-93).<br>This study is on development of a method for investigating the relationship between the legibility in the urban environment and various components of the visual environment, as perceived. and remembered by the people. The focus of the study are small urban spaces in Boston. The study developed a series of experimental protocols to study the response of the people to the various squares, around Boston. The emphasis of the study being to explore the possible approaches to collecting information related to perception of the urban environment. The phenomena of perception relating to small urban spaces. was discussed within the framework of theories in cognitive psychology. The study proposes that people are able to discriminate and distinguish squares based on the salient qualities. but are unable to distinguish between the various expectant elements such as window types. street lights and benches. The absence of salient qualities in small spaces, make them illegible. The role of schema, in developing a very vivid image of a place. was an important basis for proposing the existence of saliency and expectancy as dimensions of legibility. The domain of the research is restricted to issues relating to various ways in which information relating to the visual quantity of the environment could be extracted from the people using the techniques often used by psychologists. Some of the findings from this research indicate. that each technique used in study, gave different type of information relating to the physical features of the squares. The thesis finally argues for the development of a standard methodology to identify. and establish salient and expectant features about a place. and cities within a cultural context. The coherent vocabulary of design elements that would develop through this, would enhance the chances of a better fit, between the users of the space, and the professionals.<br>by Anil Khullar.<br>M.S.

Graves, Margaret Susanna. "Worlds writ small : four studies on miniature architectural forms in the medieval Middle East." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5489.

Texto completo
Resumen
While academic discussion of ornament within medieval Islamic art has laboured much over the codification and meaning of certain forms, there has been relatively little research to date on the visual and iconographic function of architecture as ornament in this context. Those few authors that have dealt with this issue have focused overwhelmingly on two-dimensional architectural representations, largely ignoring the considerable body of portable objects from the medieval Middle East that imitate architecture through three-dimensional forms, whether in a mimetically coherent fashion or in a more elliptical or reconfigured manner. This thesis proposes, first and foremost, that there is significant cultural meaning inherent in the use of architecture as an inspiration for the non-essential formal qualities of portable objects from the medieval Islamic world. Through iconographic analysis of the relationships that such objects form with architecture, an understanding of both full-size architecture and its miniature incarnations in the medieval urban context is advanced within the thesis. To maximise the intellectual scope of the study whilst still enabling an in-depth treatment of the material, four discrete studies of different object groups are presented. All of these are thought to date from approximately 1000 to 1350 CE, and to come from the core Middle Eastern territories of Persia, Syria and Egypt. The first chapter examines the glazed ceramic ‘house models’ believed to originate in late or post-Seljuq Persia. The second discusses six-sided ceramic tables from the same milieu, and more numerous related tables produced in Syria during the same period. In the third chapter carved marble jar stands from Cairo, apparently produced from the twelfth century onwards, are analysed. The final chapter, on metalwork, broadens its approach to encompass two very different strains of production: inkwells from Khurasan and incense burners from the breadth of the Middle East. Because much of the thesis focuses on material that has been dramatically understudied, it performs the primary action of compiling examples of each of the object types under study. Though this information is presented as a catalogue vi sommaire, this component of the thesis is not regarded as an end in itself. The major tasks of the thesis are the identification of the architectural tropes that are being evoked within each object group, analysis of the manner in which those forms have been modified to suit the miniature context of the objects, and the location of meaning within such diminutive evocations of architectural form. Through comparisons with other objects, full-size architecture, two-dimensional representations of architecture and historical texts, the thesis moves discourse on this type of motif in Islamic art beyond the traditional and sometimes superficial discussion of ‘ornament’, re-setting architectural iconography within larger contexts of urbanisation and city culture of the medieval Islamic world.

Resumen
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2005.<br>Leaf 141 blank.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 135-140).<br>People collaborating in groups have potential to produce higher-quality output than individuals working alone, due to the pooling of resources, information, and skills. Yet social psychologists have determined that groups rarely harness this potential. This thesis proposes that technology in face-to-face settings can be used to address the social factors that have damaging influence on group decision-making processes. While there is much work in the area of collaborative software and groupware, this work differentiates itself with its specific aim to influence the way a group shares information without mediating the group's communication. By presenting visualizations to the group of individual levels of participation and turn-taking behavior, the technology aims to augment the group's communication ability, by making it more aware of imbalances. A series of dynamic displays positioned peripherally to a discussion were developed and used by a variety of groups during face-to-face meetings. Both observational and experimental results indicate that these displays influence individual participation levels and the process of information sharing used during a decision-making discussion. A display revealing real-time participation levels caused those at the highest levels of participation to decrease the amount they spoke. Viewing a visualization of previous turn-taking patterns caused those who spoke the least to increase the amount they spoke in a subsequent discussion; real-time feedback did not produce this change. Additionally, after reviewing their turn-taking patterns, groups altered their information-sharing strategies.<br>(cont.) For groups that had poor sharing strategies on an initial task, this change improved their ability to share information related to the decision; for those who did not need intervention, feedback on turn-taking was not beneficial for their subsequent information sharing. The central finding of this research is that displays of social information, viewed during or after a meeting, bring about changes in a group's communication style, highlighting the potential for such displays to improve real-world decision-making.<br>by Joan Morris DiMicco.<br>Ph.D.

Resumen
Last year (1992) marked the 50th anniversary of wartime housing in Montreal. Built as temporary shelter for workers engaged in the war industry, these homes were to be demounted after the war. Public demand for inexpensive housing however, forced authorities to allow workers and veterans to purchase a unit. No bigger than a 1000 ft$ sp2$ (100 m$ sp2$), the wartime home can be investigated as a prototype for today's small affordable housing. Downsized homes, tailored to suit modern lifestyles and provide opportunity for ownership, have been criticized by theorists like Ruth Madigan, Moira Munro and Constance Perin for their inflexible designs in fulfilling people's social and spatial demands. This thesis explores how people manage to meet these needs by employing wartime housing as a research model. Interviews were conducted with owners of 22 wartime homes that were not enlarged, drawn from the Ville St-Laurent, Montreal-East, and Snowdon districts. The case studies revealed that spaces like the kitchen, the bedrooms, and storage areas play a major role in accommodating users' changing needs. Moreover, solutions rendered in space management by residents can serve as guidelines for architects in designing small living spaces. Relative to small-lot housing, adaptability in the wartime house was facilitated by its sizable lot and coal shed in the rear.
