Background/aims Communication problems are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder. These problems usually lead to challenges in social interactions. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the Son-Rise Programme on improving social interaction and communication in children with autism spectrum disorder. Methods Thirty children with autism spectrum disorder (aged 4–6) were involved in this study. The children were assigned randomly to one two groups, either the 1-week intensive Son-Rise Programme or the control group. They were evaluated using the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale before and after the study. Results The participants in the group of the Son-Rise Programme showed a significant improvement in their social interaction skills compared to the control group (P=0.001). Conclusions The Son-Rise Programme could improve social interaction in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Resumen
AbstractThis article examines the startling attention accounts of Eastern Han (24-220 CE) mourning give to depictions of the mother-son bond. Such attention can be explained in terms of the rise of cultural stereotypes about the bonds between mothers and sons, as well as fathers and sons, from the first century BCE. Whereas elite thinkers and statesmen claimed that the relationship between fathers and sons was more analogous to official duty, they regarded the relationship between mother and son as emotional, personal (si), and close (qin). As such, the mother-son bond came to represent an ideological alternative to the early Han ethos of official service, an ethos epitomized by the slogan, "duty to lord and father" (junfu zhi yi).

Resumen
Abstract This paper explores the existence of son preference and gender-based fertility behavior among Southeast Asian mothers. Using census data of ten countries (Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) over the years 1970-2014 and a sample of over 18 million observation, I show that having a first-born girl is associated with 0.16 more children in the household, equivalent to 7.2 percent rise from the mean. The marginal effects are quite robust across various specifications and subsamples. The effects are larger for countries with lower human development index and individuals with lower education. A birth cohort analysis show that the effects are significantly smaller for later cohorts implying that son preference fertility behavior has diminished over time.

Resumen
The Bavli's story of Herod's rise to power, murder of the Hasmonean family and of the rabbis, encounter with Bava b. Buta, and construction of the temple, found at Bava Batra 3b-4a, has long puzzled scholars. Many aspects of this story diverge from Josephus's account, our main source for historical knowledge of Herod's life and deeds. This paper argues that the storyteller has been influenced by Persian sources from the Sasanian period. Important elements of the Bavli story were modeled on the account of the rise of Ardashir, founder of the Sasanian dynasty, as recounted in a Sasanian text known as theKarnamag i Ardashir i Pabagan, “The Book of the Deeds of Ardashir son of Pabag.” The rabbis understood the transition from the Hasmonean to Herodian dynasties through the prism of the transition from the Parthian to Sasanian dynasties. They identified Herod with Ardashir, and constructed a story of Herod's usurpation and rise to power on the basis of Ardashir's usurpation and rise to power as recounted in Sasanian sources.

Resumen
Abstract While most English translations render nbzh in Dan 11:21 as “contemptible, vile, despicable,” closer examination will demonstrate that this Biblical Hebrew word should be translated as “spurned, scorned, rejected.” Once one understands Dan 11:21 accordingly, other ancient sources can be brought to show that this verse states, in its own thinly-veiled code, that before his rise to power, Antiochus IV, son of the late king Antiochus III and brother of the current king Seleucus IV, had been scorned and had not been given appropriate royal honors. This verse should be seen as another element in the evaluation of Dan 11 as an accurate and important historical source for the events surrounding the rise and rule of Antiochus IV.

The paper deals with problem of groundwater sustainable exploitation in accordance with the allowable drawdown, stipulated in Circular 27/2014/TT-BTNMT of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in combination with the sustainablity index, advised by UNESCO. The technical method is using a groundwater model containing reliable input data. As a result, a groundwater flow model was successfully constructed for stimulating the actual groundwater system in Con Son Island. The model was calibrated, using groundwater monitoring data of 12 wells and produced an error less than ±0.5m. On the basis of the current model, a prediction was made under condition of climate change and sea level rise up to the scenario RCP 4.5. Based on this prediction, the exploitable groundwater reserve of Con Son island was calculated as 14.430m3/day.

Resumen
AbstractThe period following the death of Saladin (589/1193) was a formative one in the history of the Ayyūbid empire. It saw the eventual establishment of Saladin's younger brother Sayf al-Dīn al-Malik al-ʿĀdil as the acknowledged sovereign of the various territories ruled by members of the Ayyūbid family, overturning the succession arrangements that Saladin had put into place; and it established modes of behaviour to be followed, mutatis mutandis, following the death of a leading Ayyūbid ruler on future occasions. The main loser in al-ʿĀdil's rise to the sultanate was Saladin's eldest son, al-Malik al-Afḍal ʿAlī, whom some have written off as an incompetent failure. In this paper for David Morgan, for many years my trusted colleague in the SOAS History Department, I suggest that that judgment on al-Afḍal is open to appeal.

Resumen
This article explores the textual variation of the name of the son of Saul referenced in 2 Sam 3-4. While the MT reads Ishbosheth, 4QSama and LXX read Mephibosheth. The vague reading in MT 2 Sam 4:1-2 of ‘the son of Saul’ probably indicates that the parent text of the MT once also referenced Mephibosheth. While the variant is widely understood to be a simple accidental scribal insertion, this article argues that it instead reflects the redactional development of Samuel. It does this by (1) considering the implications of 2 Sam 21:1-14 for the rise of the Davidic dynasty and the fall of the Saulides, (2) bringing the question of Samuel’s sources and their integration to bear on the textual issue, and (3) considering ways that this reading of Samuel clarifies the story in 2 Sam 3:7-11.

This review article aims to provide broader nuances about Saudi Arabia amid the rapid developments taking place in the Middle East in general and Saudi Arabia in particular, following the rise of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). This article begins with Salman’s Legacy, edited by Madawi al-Rasheed, and subsequently, takes up Madawi al-Rasheed’s The Son King and Ben Hubbard’s biography of MBS. It provides a brief summary of the books under review and analyzes their different themes while critically examining their prevailing shortcomings. The rise of MBS has brought about visible changes, not only in the political body of Saudi Arabia but in the wider Arab world as well. Salman’s Legacy: The Dilemmas of a New Era in Saudi Arabia, edited by Madawi al-Rasheed, seeks to highlight these challenges and provide a broad overview of Saudi Arabia, ranging from domestic affairs to foreign affairs and exploring the factors that drive the Saudi regime.

Resumen
This article recovers John Bunyan's engagement with Socinianism in his doctrinal and imaginative writings. After surveying the rise of Socinianism in seventeenth-century England, the article augments the known theological contexts of Bunyan's disputes with the Quakers and the Latitudinarians by showing that he charges these groups with slighting the Son and so associates them with anti-Trinitarian heresy. Bunyan's recourse when affirming the Trinity is to biblical typology, a hermeneutical method and manner of structuring narratives which Bunyan uses to uphold the embattled orthodox views of Christ's divinity, the propitiatory atonement and justification by faith.

Resumen
Oxytocinergic and vasopressinergic brain stem projections have been shown to play an important role in mediating cardiovascular adjustments during exercise training (ET). The aim of the present work was to determine whether the intrinsic excitability of hypothalamic neurons giving rise to brain stem peptidergic projections is altered as a consequence of ET. Whole cell patch-clamp recordings were obtained from nucleus of the solitarii tract (NTS)-projecting paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) neurons and from supraoptic nucleus (SON) and PVN magnocellular cells (MNCs), in hypothalamic slices obtained from sedentary (S) and ET rats. Our results indicate that intrinsic excitability of PVN neurons that innervate the NTS (PVN-NTS) is enhanced by ET, resulting in a more efficient input-output function (increase number of evoked actions potentials, steeper frequency/current relationships and slower decaying frequency/time relationships). Changes in input-output function were accompanied by smaller hyperpolarizing afterpotentials (HAPs) and afterhyperpolarizing potentials (AHPs), during and after trains of spikes, respectively. On the other hand, a decreased efficacy in the input-output function was observed in SON/PVN MNCs during ET. Altogether, our results indicate that ET differentially affects the intrinsic excitability of autonomic and neurosecretory SON and PVN neurons. Increased excitability in PVN-NTS neurons may contribute to enhanced release of OT and VP peptides in the dorsal brain stem, and cardiovascular fine-tuning during exercise training.

Resumen
On the example of representatives of the first two generations of the Demidov family, the paper shows how one of the most successful entrepreneurial dynasties of the first half of the 18th century ensured the succession of development of the family business. The strategies of its transmission by inheritance are traced in detail. The legacy of Nikita Demidov, the dynasty’s founder, was divided according to the “Law on single inheritance” (1714): the transfer of property was conflict free, but gave rise to hidden grievances that influenced the further relations of the heirs. The division of the inheritance of the middle son, Grigory Demidov, who was murdered in 1728 and did not determine his heir, also gave rise to a long-term enmity among family members. Akinfiy Demidov’s choice of a successor with careful preparation for the transfer of the undivided industrial economy to him also turned out to be unsuccessful, since most of the heirs were not satisfied. It was only the youngest son, Nikita Nikitich, who managed to carry out the operation of transferring property rights in such a way that this transfer could be considered “equalizing”, “amicable” and therefore “sinless”. The author claims that the circumstances and forms of ownership transfer by each member of the clan influenced the strategies chosen by the other members. With this in mind, the implementation by N. N. Demidov of the option, which ensured the conflict-free transfer of the family business, is regarded as a result of taking into account the mistakes and failures of his predecessors. The influence of external factors on these processes, in particular, changes in legislation regulating the field of family law, and transformations associated with a change in the estate status of actors, is also noted.

Resumen
The most important function of the coastal setback is to minimize damage due to coastal erosion, climate change response, and sea-level rise. There are many directions and methods of researching and assessing coastal changes and coastal erosion. This study presents the results of the shoreline changes in the area from Son Tra (Da Nang City) to Cua Dai (Hoi An City), Central Vietnam based on remote sensing data from 1965 to 2019. Three methods are used to include End Point Ratio (EPR), Linear Regression Rate (LRR), and Weighted Linear Regression (WLR). The results show that the EPR method is effective when calculating the rate of shoreline changes only at two different times. For more objective and reliable calculation, it is necessary to assess the shoreline changes over time. Meanwhile, the LRR method was shown to be superior because all shoreline data were taken into account during the construction of the regression line. However, when there is much shoreline data with different reliability, the WLR method proved more superior because of limited objective errors. The results show that from 1965 to 2019, the coast of the Son Tra - Cua Dai area had quite complicated fluctuations, of which the northern area (Son Tra) tended to accretion, the central area tends to be alternate between accretion and erosion, while the south area (Cua Dai) is strong to very strong erosion. The coast with sudden changes is the Cua Dai area with the shoreline change envelope (SCE) reaching 512m. The results also allow us to divide the coast of the Son Tra - Cua Dai area into 30 segments. They are clustered into 8 groups with different levels of erosion and accretion. This is an important basis for the setback zone establishment in the study area.

Abstract The phrase bm‘t goy in Dan 11:23 has been called “barbarous” and “curious.” In the context of a verse that seems to say that Antiochus IV will rise to power with the help of a small band of conspirators, it seems quite strange to call the group a “little nation.” The phrase may refer to several members of one small nation, Miletus, who formed a network that brought Antiochus IV to the Seleucid throne. Two powerful families of officials in the kingdom of Antiochus IV, those of Apollonius son of Menestheus and Timarchus, came from Miletus in Asia Minor, an independent city that was not part of the Seleucid kingdom. I will suggest that the Milesians Apollonius, governor of Coele Syria and Phoenicia, and Timarchus, later satrap of Babylonia, and his brother Heraclides, later treasurer of the kingdom, formed a web that helped to bring Antiochus IV to the Seleucid throne with the essential help of Eirenias, the Milesian statesman who was an ambassador to both Eumenes II, king of Pergamon, and the Seleucid court.

Resumen
Amid rising interest in the history of consumer culture and the literary marketplace, The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885) gained new significance in the 1980s when scholars placed William Dean Howells, his novel, and realism as a whole in a complicated relation to 19th-century economic culture. In general, these critics found Howells retreating from an overbearing market system within which he had tried to establish realism as a truer, less sensationalized form of writing. By showing that Howells's writing was itself a market practice, their historicist readings significantly revised our understanding of American realism. At the same time, though, their interpretations tended to rely on abstract understandings of Gilded Age business culture. This essay seeks a new view of The Rise of Silas Lapham by focusing more concretely on the marketing techniques whose emergence after the Civil War benefited Howells's writing career but troubled his conscience. Howells's awareness of his contradictory relation to the market is most obviously manifest in the economic and moral quandary faced by Silas Lapham. But as I argue below, Howells imagined a solution to this dilemma in the form of Lapham's son-in-law, Tom Corey — a figure critics have mainly ignored. Not only does the genteel Bostonian represent the future of the paint business, but his anticipated role in international markets suggests both the expansionist and idealistic nature of Howells's realism.

Calvin’s view of the ministry is dependent on his view of the Church and his view of the Church is itself controlled by his Christological emphasis. This is not true of Scholastic Calvinism, which before the rise of liberal Protestantism dominated the Calvinist landscape, but is in fact a deviant son of Calvin. The shift was subtle and largely unconscious, so that those brought up in the atmosphere of Scholastic Calvinism felt some unease but could not clearly say why, like Thomas Boston the Scots Minister of Etherick who found he ‘had no liking for the conditionality of grace’ or Fraser of Brea who ‘perceived that our divinity was much altered from what it was in the primitive reformers times.’

Resumen
The deconstruction method was used to analyze a seminal text in transaction cost economics, viz., Oliver Williamson's Economic Institutions of Capitalism. This deconstructive reading revealed that the assumption of opportunism that gives rise to the problem of economic organization as formulated by William son also tends to undermine the proposed solution to this problem. The plausi bility of unified governance as a solution to the problem of opportunism in transaction relations with asset specificity is shown to hinge on the temporary deferment of the assumption of opportunism. Thus, transaction cost economics finds itself in an impasse of thought: actors have to be assumed to be both opportunistic and not-opportunistic if the logic of the theory is to be main tained.

The Saudi leadership feels threatened, first of all by Shi'ite Iran, but also by the extremist Islamic State (IS), the Muslim Brotherhood and even liberal intellectuals. Low oil prices cause growing deficits, while youth unemployment remains huge. Is the House of Saud on the verge of collapse? This paper first addresses the recent succession, as a result of which new King Salman's young son, Muhammad bin Salman, accumulated unparalleled power. It asks whether his ambitious plans to modernize the Saudi economy can save the kingdom or if his fast rise will unleash a power struggle. This paper also looks at the war in Yemen which Muhammad bin Salman started and that might deepen the already problematic state of the Saudi economy. Finally, it explores a number of scenarios from muddling through to total implosion.

Resumen
The topic of gay, lesbian, and bisexual literature with Jewish content has been taboo for a very long time. Because of Judaism's deep-rooted commitment to the family, alternative forms of sexual relationships have rarely been mentioned in Jewish literature. Only in the past twenty-five years, with the rise of AIDS, but starting in the radical 1960s with its innovative sexual and cultural critique and revolutionary approach to politics and power arrangements, have we seen the rise of Jewish literature on gay, lesbian, and bisexual lifestyles. Since homosexuality is still asur (forbidden) in Halacha, this is still a controversial topic and care must be taken to handle it with sensitivity. Still, librarians and teachers should introduce these issues at age-appropriate and text appropriate levels. This bibliographic essay demonstrates the wide range of material that exists on this topic from research guides and anthologies to novels and sociological works. The literature is growing by leaps and bounds; much of the material is useful for Jewish libraries but must be updated regularly since this field is undergoing great change. However, since gay history is still history, the encyclopedias and research guides will always be useful. The paper includes a special section on homosexuality and sexual politics in Nazi Germany, a special interest of the author, a son of Holocaust survivors.

Resumen
During the period 2019–2020, Lake Victoria water levels rose at an alarming rate that has caused various problems in the region. The influence of this phenomena on surface and subsurface water resources has not yet been investigated, largely due to lack of enough in situ measurements compounded by the spatial coverage of the lake’s basin, incomplete/inconsistent hydrometeorological data, and unavailable governmental data. Within the framework of joint data assimilation into a land surface model from multi-mission satellite remote sensing, this study employs the state-of-art Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment follow-on (GRACE-FO) time-variable terrestrial water storage (TWS), newly released ERA-5 reanalysis, and satellite radar altimetry products to understand the cause of the rise of Lake Victoria on the one hand, and the associated impacts of the rise on the total water storage compartments (surface and groundwater) triggered by the extreme climatic event on the other hand. In addition, the study investigates the impacts of large-scale ocean–atmosphere indices on the water storage changes. The results indicate a considerable increase in water storage over the past two years, with multiple subsequent positive trends mainly induced by the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Significant storage increase is also quantified in various water components such as surface water and water discharge, where the results show the lake’s water level rose by ∼1.4 m, leading to approximately 1750 gigatonne volume increase. Multiple positive trends are observed in the past two years in the lake’s water storage increase with two major events in April–May 2019 and December 2019–January 2020, with the rainfall occurring during the short rainy season of September to November (SON) having had a dominant effect on the lake’s rise.

Resumen
The cultural period immediately prior to the Talayotic phase in Minorca, the Pretalayotic, belongs to the Chalcolithic—Early Bronze Age and is represented by a series of megalithic monuments. When of a funerary nature, these consist of megalithic chamber-tombs in the eastern part of the island and of rock-cut graves of elongated plan in the western. So far, apart from the newly-discovered site of Morellet, no habitations are known in eastern Minorca and the new site appears to indicate that they were either of a seasonal nature or merely rock-shelters. In the western half of the island dwelling-sites are clearly evidenced by villages of habitation — navetas (navetiforms) such as Son Mercer de Baix which continued in use during the Early Talayotic period. It should be noted that although their method of construction would incline one to class them all as belonging to an identical Mediterranean cultural group, the finds indicate an autochthonous evolution which in time gave rise to the insular peculiarities, including some of a constructional nature, typical of Minorca.

Resumen
The guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) Son of Sevenless (SOS) is a key Ras activator that is autoinhibited in the cytosol and activates upon membrane recruitment. Autoinhibition release involves structural rearrangements of the protein at the membrane and thus introduces a delay between initial recruitment and activation. In this study, we designed a single-molecule assay to resolve the time between initial receptor-mediated membrane recruitment and the initiation of GEF activity of individual SOS molecules on microarrays of Ras-functionalized supported membranes. The rise-and-fall shape of the measured SOS activation time distribution and the long mean time scale to activation (~50 seconds) establish a basis for kinetic proofreading in the receptor-mediated activation of Ras. We further demonstrate that this kinetic proofreading is modulated by the LAT (linker for activation of T cells)–Grb2–SOS phosphotyrosine-driven phase transition at the membrane.

ABSTRACT Pulse wave analysis in Anesthesia and Intensive Care. The rate and shape of the arterial pulse have been used for millennia in a wide range of clinical settings. Each component of the blood pressure wave; peak pressure, diastolic pressure, ejection time, rise in blood pressure during systole and mean blood pressure are the result of a complex interrelation of ventricle-arterial processes. Its correct interpretation can be very useful when making clinical decisions.

Resumen
Suckling stimuli induce somatodendritic oxytocin (OT) release from supraoptic nucleus (SON) neurons, which raises intranuclear OT concentrations and contributes to the effectiveness of the milk-ejection reflex. To clarify how such changes in OT concentrations modulate the activity of OT neurons, we examined OT effects using whole cell patch-clamp recordings from SON neurons in slices from lactating rats. Progressive increases from extremely low OT concentrations (0.1–10 fM) to high concentrations (0.1–10 nM) induced excitation and subsequent spike frequency reduction (SFR) in OT neurons. Significant effects of OT on firing rates were observed starting at 1 fM, reached peak level from 1 fM to 1 pM before SFR occurred in most neurons. The buildup of OT concentrations progressively promoted depolarization of membrane potential, spike broadening, decreases in spike amplitude, and increases in the rise time of spike afterhyperpolarizations, which were unrelated to firing rate. However, intermittent application of OT (1 fM, 1 pM, and 1 nM, each for 5 min) evoked dose-dependent excitation but not the SFR. Application of 1 pM OT for 40 min simulated the effects of progressively increasing OT concentrations. Vasopressin neurons were also activated by OT but did not show SFR. Consistent with presynaptic loci of OT action, ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonists reduced OT effects on firing rate, whereas bicuculline did not change the excitatory effects. These results suggest that the specific autoregulatory effects of OT, and perhaps other neuropeptides as well, are time and concentration dependent.

Resumen
Background: In India, in the last one and half decades longevity of the people has increased due to decline in mortality rate, better medical and health care facilities and improvements in overall quality of life of people. Presently India has the second largest geriatric population in the globe. In 2001, geriatric population was 77 million in India and it is estimated that in India total number of elderly will rise to 150 million by 2025 and by the year 2050 the number would rise to about 324 million.4 Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted in an urban slum located in Secunderabad. Almost 225 subjects more than 60 years were included in study after giving oral consent. People with severe morbidity and unable to give consent were excluded from study. Results: Majority (70%) of the resident experienced verbal abuse followed by physical abuse (13%) at least one time. About 11% felt they were being neglected by their family members. Daughter-in-law was the major person involved in the elder abuse accounting for 45.9%, followed by son 24.3%. Abuse from relatives accounted for 21.6%. Spouse and daughter were involved in elder abuse in about 5.4% and 2.7% cases respectively. Conclusions: As recently said by Financial Minister in Parliament of India, old age population growing drastically in India, especially in south India. Increasing geriatric population leading to increase in need of health care and psychological assistance.

Resumen
Nayantara Sahgal is the author of nine Novels, ten works of non-fiction and wide-ranging literary and political commentary. She has received the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Sinclair Prize and the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize. The Novel “Mistaken Identity” is an elegant, adroitly constructed, mordantly written story of the playboy Bhushan singh, son of the Raja of Vijaygarh. He is arrested and thrown into jail and charged with treason. The Novelist successfully depicts the British officers’ partial Judgements, tortures of Indian National Activists and the prison rules. As news of violent world events penetrates the prison walls – civil war in Turkey, the rise of Mussolini, Gandhi’s Dandi March, mass arrests, the death of hunger-strikers in Lahore – Bhushan discovers that fate has played a cruel trick on him. The present paper is an attempt to bring out the story of a love and obsession that brilliantly summons up the turmoil of India in the twilight years of empire.
