AbstractWe investigated the long-term photometrical behaviour of the EXors V1118 Ori and V1143 Ori on the basis of the Sonneberg Plate Archive. About 2800 plates were checked for outbursts of these stars. We found several dozens of plates where the stars appeared to be distinctly brighter than the plate limit. To get magnitudes we have scanned those plates and applied a special method of brightness determination which is currently used at Sonneberg Observatory. Because of the small number of plates we were able to extract only crude estimates of some typical time scales of outburst and quiesce

During a search for flaring optical counterparts to γ-ray burst sources (GRBs) on archival patrol plates, an optical outburst image was found in the 3200 arcmin2 error box of the GRB which occurred on 1978 October 6 (GB 781006B = GBS 0008+13; Greiner et al. 1991) and was named S 10933 according to the convention of new Sonneberg variables. This outburst image appears on three simultaneously exposed plates taken on 1966 August 14/15 from 23.33 to 0.13 UT. The classification criteria were based exclusively on photospheric absorption lines, primarily lines of C III, Si II, and Si III. It is shown that the species concept of Ernst Mayr does not consider the evolution and modes of reproduction of eucaryotic organisms as a whole. It is only translatable into a taxonomic practice in a very special situation: sexually reproducing and sympatrically occurring organisms that do not exchange genes. Mayr’s central criterion of reproductive isolation is not applicable to the pervasive cases of reticulate evolution, to numerous groups of organisms with asexual reproduction, to the frequent situations of allopatry and to classification of fossil organisms. Professor Geoffrey Beale was one of the UK's leading protozoan geneticists with an international reputation. His enthusiasm for the use of genetic analysis to address fundamental questions in the biology of both free-living and parasitic protozoa was based on the influence of a series of leading geneticists whom he worked with in the early part of his career in the John Innes Horticultural Institute and Cold Spring Harbor. His research started with plants and Escherichia coli . Later he moved his research to Paramecium , under the mentorship of Tracy Sonneborn (ForMemRS 1964). His work on the

Resumen
Imaging is a fundamental tool of astronomical research — a fact emphasised by the wide-ranging subject matter covered at the conference on ‘Astronomy from Wide-field Imaging’ (IAU Symposium 161), held under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union at Potsdam in August, 1993. The importance of providing adequate archives for astronomical images to allow for future scientific exploration was particularly stressed.

Resumen
Abstract We have been monitoring, at high cadence, the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of VES 263 following the discovery in 2018 of a brightening labeled as event Gaia-18azl. VES 263 is so far a neglected emission-line object discovered in the 1960s on objective prism plates, tentatively classified as a semi-regular AGB cool giant by automated analysis of ASASSN lightcurves. We have discovered that VES 263 is a bonafide massive pre-Main Sequence object (∼12 M⊙), of the Herbig AeBe type. It is located at 1.68±0.07 kpc distance, within the Cyg OB2 star-forming region, and it is highly r

At given doses and clonal ages, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation-induced DNA damage reduced clonal life-span, but when followed by photoreactivation, extension of clonal life-span was observed. If photoreactivation preceded the UV treatment, no significant beneficial effect was detected. Because studies of others have shown that photoreactivation repair monomerizes the UV-induced cyclobutane dimers in DNA but does not affect the other photoproducts, these result indicate that DNA damage can influence the duration of clonal life-span unless that damage is repaired. Repeated treatment with UV and ph
