There is no concept of a soul that loses its body after death, and continues to live independently, in the Hebrew Bible. Even though the word 靈魂 (“soul”) is used in the Chinese Union Version (CUV) translation, there is not even one original Hebrew text of נֶפֶשׁ (nepeš) and רוּחַ (rûaḥ) that supports the idea of the immortality of the soul. Therefore, the better translation of נֶפֶשׁ in the Chinese Bible would be 人的生命 (“human life”) or 整全的人 (“wholistic person”), רוּחַ and would be better translated as 靈 (“spirit”) or 生命 (“life”).’

The article is an attempt to critically evaluate the manifestations of the philosophical culture sprouting in Rus’. With the baptism in the Byzantine Rite, Rus’ in the 10th century joined the family of Christian nations and defined the future direction of her own cultural development. A recurrent myth in the Bible about God “slaying a dragon,” primarily in the Old Testament, provides a test case for using the “study of Scripture as the soul of theology” without depending on historical accuracy or indeed on “salvation history” at all. Freeing us from the dangers of a resurgent focus on history in theological interpretation, this article shows how the dragon-slaying myth speaks powerfully to theodicy and the problem of evil.

By distinguishing a great variety of notions of law in the scripture, Origen locates the specific notion of natural law in the guiding part of the soul called the heart and the ἡγεμονικόν or νοῦς in the Bible and philosophy, respectively.
