Abstract:This article examines historic gendered negotiations over identity, descent, and access to land along Uganda’s southern littorals by thinking about belonging with an exceptionally diverse assemblage of small fish. Based on accounts from contemporary littoral residents, the comparative historic ethnographic record, and fisheries scientists, the article describes the reproductive practices of enkejje as they may have been visible from Uganda’s southern littorals and situates the practices of raising socially recognized children within broader historical developments of clanship and publ

Abstract The large radiation of terrestrial isopods (suborder Oniscidea) includes several families that are represented primarily in marine-littoral or riparian habitats. Among these are members of Ligiidae and Tylidae as well as several basal families within the section Crinocheta. Structural and physiological evidence supports a marine-littoral ancestry of the Oniscidea. We examined aerial and aquatic respiration (measured as VCO2) in six species of marine-littoral Oniscidea representing five families, as well as one riparian and one endogean species. We assessed species richness, biomass, and community type of littoral fish in 10 southern Quebec lakes in relation to several limnological and prey resource variables. Lake, yearly, and seasonal variation in biomass was evaluated by quantitative, replicated seining. Species richness averaged 12.8 in our lakes, and 24 species were collected overall. Total littoral fish biomass averaged 13.5 g∙m−2 overall and varied significantly among lakes (range 6.1–26.9 g∙m−2) and between early and late summer. Shoreline erosion downdrift of littoral barriers, such as harbor breakwaters, is a universal concern. The beneficial use of dredged sediment through placement in the nearshore downdrift of littoral barriers is common place, but key questions about the sediment transport and shoreline response remain challenging. To that end, the shoreline at Ogden Dunes, Indiana, along the southern shores of Lake Michigan is investigated with historical aerial photographs, nearshore placement records, hydrodynamic and bathymetric field data, and numerical models.

This article challenges conventional notions of geography in Vietnamese historiography that overlook the role of the sea as an integrative social space capable of uniting ostensibly segregated regions economically, socially and politically. Viewing history from the seashore instead of the rice field, it highlights the littoral inhabitants who connected interior agricultural and forest foragers to coasting and ocean carrier trade, and underscores the importance of the littoral as the ‘great river’ that encouraged Vietnamese political expansion and state formation along a southern trajectory.

AbstractFour specimens of the brachyuran crab Liocarcinus mcleayi (Barnard, 1947) (new combination), were captured from the Cadiz littoral (southern Spain) on a substratum of coarse sand and fine gravel under bottom currents at depths of 13 to 24 m. These captures represent a new record of this species from Iberian and European waters and support the known African influence in the Spanish littoral of Cadiz. Based on an anatomical study, a new combination is proposed for the name of the species.

PCB concentrations in chironomids were negatively correlated, while crayfish did not correlate with lake total phosphorus. The study presents the results of geobotanical investigations conducted in rice fields in southern Thailand in 2013. It is focussed on the classification of plant communities poorly investigated from a geobotanical standpoint. Altogether 125 phytosociological relevés were collected, using the Braun-Blanquet method. We noted more than 100 species in the vegetation plots, including many rare ones. We classified the vegetation into seven communities, including six associations. Five associations are proposed as new: Nymphaeetum nouchali, Fimbristylido miliaceae-Sphenocleetum zeylanicae, Ischaemo

These threats include saltwater intrusion, coastal erosion and flooding. In the coastal context, the climate change effect often raising the most concern is that of sea-level rise. Much work has therefore been done on the linear setback caused by a rise in sea-level. In order to get the full picture of possible changes caused by sea-level rise, the secondary effects of a rising sea-level also need to be considered. Sea-le

Resumen
This chapter examines the historic US policy of isolationism in the Western Hemisphere. It begins with a vignette about the U.S. Coast Guard cutter seized a submersible vessel (a rudimentary submarine) dubbed “Bigfoot” off the southwest coast of Costa Rica. The chapter then focuses on the use of the Navy and Coast Guard around the American littoral in battling illicit flows (notably drugs but also people) largely originating from Latin/Central America and the Caribbean. The central point of the chapter is to demonstrate that isolationist strategies are nothing new, nor simply historic. They are employed by the Navy and Coast Guard every day.

Resumen
The intricate shores of the Mediterranean Sea twist and turn for some 46,000 km, with three-quarters of their convoluted length confined to only four countries— Italy, Croatia, Greece, and Turkey. Just over half the coast is rocky, much of it limestone, with the remainder encompassing almost every type of littoral environment (exceptions being coral reefs and mangrove wetlands). Such littoral diversity has long made the seaboard of southern Europe, the Levant, and North Africa a fruitful natural laboratory for studying coastal geomorphology and sea-level change. The virtually enclosed sea ensures that wave processes are generally modest and the tidal range is limited (often less than half a metre), a combination that permits observational evidence of many modern shoreline features to be related precisely to mean sea level. Consequently, relative shifts in the position of now relict coastal features can be used to track the rhythms of relative sea-level change and shoreline evolution. Such rhythms have a bearing on several aspects beyond the physical geography of the Mediterranean basin: they inform archaeological reconstructions of the past settlement and exploitation of a coastal zone that has been an important focus of human activity since Palaeolithic times; they provide testing and fine-tuning for geophysical, geodynamic, and palaeoclimatic models for the region; and they set the backdrop to contemporary societal issues, such as future sea-level rise and coastline adjustments to mass tourism, which threaten the long-term sustainability of the Mediterranean littoral. In this chapter, we review these diverse facets of the Mediterranean coastal realm to provide a synthesis of how these shores have evolved into their present-day appearance. The Mediterranean occupies the convergence zone between two major tectonic plates, Africa and Europe, with a third, Arabia, pressing from the east. Caught within the collisional vice of these great plates are several minor plates and crustal blocks, most notably Anatolia and Apulia. The result is a complex network of plate tectonic structures that define the general configuration of the seaboard. In particular, two major subduction systems partition the Mediterranean basin into a patchwork of minor basins and subsidiary seas (Krijgsman 2002; Chapter 1).

ABSTRACT The western branch of the East African Rift is characterized by modest amounts of extension and by deeply-subsided, fault-controlled basins filled with large, deep lakes. Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa (Malawi) are two of the largest lakes in the world, with maximum water depths of 1450 and 700 m respectively. Newly acquired seismic reflection data, along with newly reprocessed legacy data reveal thick sedimentary sections, in excess of 5 km in some localities. The 1980's vintage legacy data from Project PROBE have been reprocessed through pre-stack depth migration in Lake Tanganyika, and
