Abstract We studied the dispersal patterns of an insular population of California Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis occidentalis) in southern California from 1987–1998. The study area encompassed the entire San Bernardino Mountains and included a nested, 535-km2 study area which we used to evaluate the effects of study area size on dispersal parameter estimation. One hundred and twenty-nine of the 478 banded juvenile owls (27%) had entered the territorial population by 1998. Over half of the successful dispersers became territorial within one year. This study proposes an instrument to evaluate territorial social capital as a collective resource, found in the cooperation, trust and reciprocity relations. The evaluation of the territorial social capital was done in three neighboring areas in southern Brazil. These territories have common cultural aspects, although they have experienced different patterns of development. The results show that the territorial social capital can be analyzed according to four factors in this order: proximity, territorial anchorage, reciprocity and collective memory. This article presents an analysis of the socio-cultural and infrastructural transformations occurring in the southern borderland regions of the Far East: Amur Oblast, Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Primorsky and Khabarovsk Krais. These territories were barely subject to any demarcation and geopolitical changes, with shifts occurring under the influence of economic and political factors, as well as various processes associated with globalization. Based on federal and regional statistical data, together with deep interview and focus group studies conducted in small borderland towns, certain explicit

For a long time, domestic historians of law and the state and other branch scientists, who were engaged in the study of the southern territories, were focused on the practices of the imperial period, and later – of the period of Soviet occupation. However, the approach to the analysis of the processes of development of the southern Ukrainian territories in the core branches of historical science has now been radically changed and deepened. Methodological approaches to conducting research in related scientific fields also need rethinking. The methodological basis of scientific research is the r

The article concentrates on the Early Neolithic Osipovka culture of the Lower Amur and its southern boundaries. Due to the resumption of excavations at the Xiaonanshan site in the left bank of Ussuri River, Heilongjiang province, China, recently, it has become possible to conduct a comparative study of technical and typological characteristics of the ceramic material of these two territories. The following features were revealed: 1. Ceramics in both cases is loose, the composition of clay molding masses demonstrate the presence of additives: grus, sand, plant fibers, and crushed shell. 2. AbstractThe reproductive behaviour of individually marked southern sea lions, Otaria byronia, was studied from 1981 to 1986, at Punta Norte, Peninsula Valdés, Argentina. Males defended territories along the high water mark early in the breeding season but switched to female defence as they were joined by females. Males defended females from neighbours and intruders, and forcefully held pre-oestrous females near them. Males defended territories and females against neighbours and intruders with threat displays and by fighting. Males never strayed far from females. The frequency of aggressive int

However, the region, inserted in the "deforestation arc", territorial area known for high rates of forest loss, has been changed over the years by the replacement of natural forests by pastures for cattle production. This work aimed to survey the bird population with the current land use in different areas. The research on bird species was performed from March 2012 to January 2013 in eight p

Veery (Catharus fuscescens) is a breeding migrant thrush that nests throughout much of the temperate forests within Canada. Habitat loss and degradation is thought to be responsible for a steady decline in Veery populations since 1970. We studied habitat characteristics of occupied Veery territories versus unoccupied adjacent areas in southern Ontario during the 2016 breeding season. Occupied territories were characterized as riparian deciduous forests dominated by ash (Fraxinus spp.), Black Cherry (Prunus serotina), and Red Maple (Acer rubrum) trees with an understorey of Balsam Fir (Abies ba

Over the course of the long eighteenth century, a distinct Southern Dutch linguistic identity emerged in the region now known as Flanders, and spelling features are at the heart of this developing linguistic autonomy. By analyzing eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century normative and metalinguistic comments about three highly salient spelling variables (the spelling of the long vowels a and u in closed syllables, the ending 〈-n〉 or 〈-ø〉 in masculine adnominals, and the orthographic representation of etymologically different e and o sounds), we will show how seemingly insignificant features in

The population of Lapland Longspur Calcarius lapponicus has declined drastically in the Scandinavian mountains over the last decades. One hypothesis is that the population decline has been caused by a change in vegetation composition, specifically an increase in lichen cover leading to a possible decrease in seed-producing plants. We tested the hypothesis by recording vegetation composition inside and outside Lapland Longspur territories in a 10 km2 study area at Hardangervidda, southern Norway, where longs

The Kakerori (Rarotongan flycatcher) Pomarea dimidiata is a small, territorial passerine, endemic to Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Now listed as endangered, the total known population in August 1991 was 48 individuals. Kakerori are found in the steep, forested inland of southern Rarotonga. Newly fledged young remain high in the canopy near the natal nest. However, 4?5 months later they occupy spurs and small ridges immediately surrounding the parental territory, while 7?8 months after fledging, these young birds are most often found on high, exposed ridges where they form small cohorts. Resumen
The southern third (1300 ha) of the Waipapa Ecological Area, Pureora Forest Park, was surveyed for North Island Kokako (Callaeas cinerea wilsoni) during the summer of 1990/91. Thirty four territories were located (0.03 territories ha-1). At least 17 of these territories contained a pair, four (23%) of which fledged a total of seven juveniles. A conservative estimate of density was 0.04 Kokako ha-1 over the whole study area. These results suggest that there has been a large (up to 60%) decline in Kokako density in the Waipapa Ecological Area since the previous survey in 1980-81.
