Meanwhile, higher magnitude of interference and pre-tighten force are more favorable for the stiffness improvement of HSK tool. For the special spindle structure, the optimal priorities of the connecting system with different parameters are obtained with the analytic hierarchy process.

Apart from noise pollution in the industry, chatter leaves a bad surface finish on the part and negatively influences dimensional tolerances, reduced productivity, excessive tool wear and damaged machine-tool components. Therefore, chatter avoidance is utmost importance. However, a deeper investigation into chatter formation reveals that chatter appears during metal cutting process as a result of resonance caused by interaction of the prominent natural frequencies

The basic notion of relativity, first articulated by Galileo, explains why we do not feel Earth moving as it orbits the Sun and was successful for hundreds of years. We then show how Galilean relativity breaks down at speeds near the speed of light, and follow Einstein’s steps in working out the unexpected relationships between space and time that we now call special relativity. Texto completo
Resumen
CVD-diamond coated special tools have been widely utilized to prolong their tool life in practical production lines. WC (Co) punch for fine piercing of metallic sheets required for high wear-toughness to be free from chipping and damages and for high product quality to punch out the holes with sufficient dimensional accuracy. The laser trimming process was developed to reduce the surface roughness of diamond coating down to submicron level and to adjust its diamond layer dimensions with a sharp punch edge for accurate piercing. The pulsed laser irradiation was employed to demonstrate that micro-groove was accurately formed into the diamond coating. Less deterioration in the worked diamond film by this laser treatment was proved by the Raman spectroscopy. The femtosecond laser trimming was proposed to sharpen the punch edge down to 2 μm and to form the nano-textured punch side surfaces with the LIPSS (Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structuring)-period of 300 nm. Fine piercing experiments were performed to demonstrate that punch life was significantly extended to continuous punching in more than 10,000 shots and that mirror-shining hole surfaces were attained in every shot by regularly coining the nanotextures. The sharp punch edge with homogeneous edge profile was responsible for reduction of the induced damages into work sheet by piercing. The punch life was extended by the ejection mechanism of debris particles through the nanotextures on the punch side surface. The present laser treatment was useful in trimming and nanostructuring the complex-shaped punch edge for industrial application.

Educational technology usage in early childhood education stands at a fork in the road. One path embellishes existing curricula with technology. The other, the more difficult passing, holds promises of technological transformations to the curricula and assessment in ways that can facilitate and propel child development. To support teachers in this path, early childhood teacher education programs need to transform themselves. The purpose of this chapter is to outline how these changes may occur within the context of national standards and policies, pedagogy and beliefs, curricular transformations, impact on children, and special tools. The authors suggests re-conceptualizing the content and delivery of college courses to support and inspire teachers to take the road less traveled. Chapter 12 presents the progress of and problems faced by the Open approach in the Bengal Delta and draws attention to the special merits of the Open approach in confronting the adverse effects of climate change in this delta. It surveys the findings of river scholars in the Indian part of the delta favoring the Open approach. Reviewing progress in the Bangladesh part of the delta, the chapter follows the struggle against the Flood Action Plan (FAP) that argued for big embankment projects in the wake of the historic flood of 1988. It notes the changes that took place in Bangladesh’s water-related institutional set up following the FAP process and the prospects they hold for promoting the Open approach. The chapter also presents a few examples of water projects that conform with the Open approach. It offers a critique of the recently formulated Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 that fails to make a clear break from the Cordon approach. It reviews the development of the renewed, broad-based civic movement in Bangladesh for adoption of the Open approach.

Resumen
Today most e-government and e-procurement research and discussion are done in a quite utilitarian and technical way. This follows the worldwide positivist and utilitarian approach to research that neglects the social, organizational, cultural, and political aspects of social life. Therefore, most research initiatives are based on a market-driven and utilitarian approach in which technology is treated as a mere tool. So, under the use of a traditional top-down model or the “tool-approach,” information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been implemented in developing countries detached from their social and political context, as an instrumental, static, elitist, and uncritical utilitarian approach, neglecting a deep investigation of how social, economic, and political factors are embedded in technology. In addition, most of the literature on e-procurement has been studied primarily from a business-to-business (B2B) perspective, and the field of public sector procurement has been neglected. Although public e-procurement has similarities with the private sector, it also has some special characteristics that make it different. Therefore, it is not clear to what extent recent decisions on public e-procurement have been optimal. In the broad competing views of information technology (IT), interpretative or constructivist approaches see the use of IT as the result of conflicts, negotiations, and interpretations of various interests that make it socially constructed. These competing views of technology help the formulation of an appropriate debate on e-procurement that holds enormous potential for cost savings, efficiency and benefit gains, and transparency. In this work, an attempt was made to show how qualitative research traditions like structuration theory (specifically the perspective of “dialectic of control”) and qualitative research analysis can be used in the analysis of e-procurement in Brazil, leading to results that differ substantially from the mainstream positivist research that does not always touch the barriers and challenges that can constrain the adoption and implementation of public e-procurement projects.

Conventional breeding interventions in cotton have been successful and these techniques have doubled the productivity of cotton, but it took around 40 years. One of the techniques of molecular biology i.e., genetic engineering has brought significant improvement in productivity within the year of introduction. With cotton genomics maturing, many reference genomes and related genomic resources have been developed. Newer wild species have been discovered and many countries are conserving genetic resources within and between species. This valuable germplasm can be exchanged among countries for increasing cotton productivity. As many as 249 Mapping and Association studies have been carried out and many QTLs have been discovered and it is high time for researchers to get into fine-mapping studies. Techniques of genomic selection hold valuable trust for deciphering quantitative traits like fiber quality and productivity since they take in to account all minor QTLs. There are just two studies involving genomic selection in cotton, underlining its huge prospects in cotton research. Genome editing and transformation techniques have been widely used in cotton with as many as 65 events being developed across various characters, and eight studies carried out using crisper technology. These promising technologies have huge prospects for cotton production sustainability.

Resumen
Mathematically speaking, the most important tools used by the chemical kineticist to study chemical reactions like the ones we have been considering are sets of coupled, first-order, ordinary differential equations that describe the changes in time of the concentrations of species in the system, that is, the rate laws derived from the Law of Mass Action. In order to obtain equations of this type, one must make a number of key assumptions, some of which are usually explicit, others more hidden. We have treated only isothermal systems, thereby obtaining polynomial rate laws instead of the transcendental expressions that would result if the temperature were taken as a variable, a step that would be necessary if we were to consider thermochemical oscillators (Gray and Scott, 1990), for example, combustion reactions at metal surfaces. What is perhaps less obvious is that our equations constitute an average over quantum mechanical microstates, allowing us to employ a relatively small number of bulk concentrations as our dependent variables, rather than having to keep track of the populations of different states that react at different rates. Our treatment ignores fluctuations, so that we may utilize deterministic equations rather than a stochastic or a master equation formulation (Gardiner, 1990). Whenever we employ ordinary differential equations, we are making the approximation that the medium is well mixed, with all species uniformly distributed; any spatial gradients (and we see in several other chapters that these can play a key role) require the inclusion of diffusion terms and the use of partial differential equations. All of these assumptions or approximations are well known, and in all cases chemists have more elaborate techniques at their disposal for treating these effects more exactly, should that be desirable. Another, less widely appreciated idealization in chemical kinetics is that phenomena take place instantaneously—that a change in [A] at time t generates a change in [B] time t and not at some later time t + τ. On a microscopic level, it is clear that this state of affairs cannot hold.

Resumen
To school desegregation activists in the 1960s, school choice plans represented one of a series of tactics of avoidance or obstruction. Yet choice programs became part of school desegregation remedies and then became initiatives for varied school reforms. Political alliances and clashes around the issue of school choice color public perceptions even more than the actual effects of school choice on students’ achievement or social integration. School choice can enable both self-segregation or student mixing across many lines of difference. As a tool of school reform, school choice continues to hold promise and risks for those seeking equality and integration within schools while enhancing pluralism and respect for differences in society as a whole. Yet some forms of school choice could undermine equality goals unless they are accompanied by direct efforts to maintain and enforce these goals. Widespread perceptions that American schools are failing have fueled a major nationwide movement for school reform since the early 1980s. At the forefront have been business leaders who—worried about American competitiveness and the qualifications of the workforce for jobs requiring increasing technical skills—have brought conceptions of competition and innovation to the school reform initiatives. Parents and teachers, seeking greater control of local schools, have also energized the movement. Challenging established school bureaucracies and political arrangements, these reformers have pushed for performance standards, voucher systems to promote competition and consumer choices, site-based management, and other opportunities for innovation at the level of the individual school rather than the district or statewide system. One of the key themes pursued by a range of parents, teachers, business leaders, and other advocates as a motor for reform is parental choice. This concept combines a market-style consumer sovereignty idea with notions of personal liberty. School choice stimulates competition among providers, as parents look for benchmarks for assessing quality. As a result, states and localities have initiated institutional innovations. These include magnet and pilot schools, which draw students from an entire district by offering a special focus. Vouchers permit poor students to use public funds to pay tuition in private schools.

Resumen
In biological terms, stress literally means a force from the outside world acting upon an individual, and is a phenomenon we have all experienced. The term ‘stress’ was first used in the 1930s by the endocrinologist Hans Selye to describe the responses of laboratory animals to various stimuli. Originally, Selye meant ‘stress’ to be the response of an organism to a perceived threat or ‘stressor’, but the term is now used to mean the stimulus rather than the response in some cases. When presented with a stressor of any type, everyone will produce a reaction to that stress, and this is a normal physiological event. However, if the reaction is prolonged, too intense, or atypical in some way, stress can become abnormal and cause problems. Stressful events, even when reacted to normally, are important contributors to the causes of many kinds of psychiatric disorder. In this chapter, we consider those psychiatric disorders that are specific reactions to stressful experiences. These may occur independently or alongside other psychiatric conditions and include: … ● acute stress reactions: short- term disorders after stressful events; ● post- traumatic stress disorder: a disorder following exceptionally severe stress; ● adjustment disorders: conditions occurring after a change in life circumstances; ● grief reactions: the normal and abnormal responses to bereavement; ● reactions to special kinds of acute stress: for example, traffic accidents, war, earthquakes, etc… For all these conditions, an identifiable stressor is a necessary but not always sufficient factor in its aetiology. GPs encounter the vast majority of patients with stress disorders who present to the health services, but all clinicians will see these patients in their clinical specialties. The reasons for this are threefold: … 1 Acute physical illness and its treatment are stressful. 2 Chronic illness or disability can result in substantial changes in life circumstances. 3 Clinicians treat people involved in other kinds of stressful experiences…. Everyone reacts to stress differently, and what constitutes a stressful event is therefore highly subjective. However, there are certain situations that are likely to be experienced as stressful by anyone. The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale is a list of 43 life events which predispose to stress- related illnesses, weighted according to their respective probability of doing so.

Due to its excellent material properties, titanium is an important structural material for several application fields in the aerospace industry, the chemical industry, medical engineering or marine technologies. Especially its excellent weight-strength ratio, high-temperature strength corrosion resistance and not least its biocompatibility enables a wide field of special applications. These properties can be improved by alloying of other chemical elements. Despite good availability of resources and moderate world market prices, there is only a limited application range for titanium. Main reaso

Cutter Runout is the eccentricity caused by a combination of imperfections in the cutting tool, tool holder, and spindle. While magnitudes of cutter runout are generally small (e.g 10 μm), the effect is noticeable in high tolerance finishing operations, and can cause significant variations in the force experienced on a multi tooth cutter. The goal of this research is to design and evaluate an indirect runout estimation method, using feed force components at the spindle and tooth passing frequency. The accuracy of the method is evaluated for a range of cutting conditions for 4 and 6 tooth helic

The manufacturing of hard and refractory materials such as ceramics, glass or carbide poses particular challenges on tools and machines. The Sauer Limited a company of the DMG Mori Corporation has developed ultrasonic tool holders working in a frequency range from 15 to 60 kHz. The ultrasonic vibrations are superimposing the tool movement in the tool axis especially for the application on special materials. This technique causes a structural weakening in the contact area and facilitates the machining. For these special materials, a force reduction, mainly in drilling into carbide with diamond

Gas turbines performance improvement requires efficient and accurate prediction tools for film-cooling of high pressure turbine blades. Use of computational fluid dynamics in the cooling design faces a challenge due to a wide range of length scales to be resolved. The difficulty is also seriously compounded by the basic feature that each blade has a large number of cooling holes. In the present paper, a new spectral approach is proposed to address this modeling difficulty. The motivation is to resolve the aerothermal flow field and mixing process of film-cooling by the numerical solution to th

The crossing of a series of high, parallel, elongated and with steep scarp mountains in the Serrana Province, between Ca´ceres and Cuiaba´, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, constituted a great technical challenge for implementation of the Bolivia - Mato Grosso gas pipeline. Due to environmental preservation, the gas pipeline could not cross the crest of some of these mountains using conventional surface methods and the alternative of surrounding the mountains would have caused an extended additional path, with appreciable additional cost. The economically viable alternative was the horizontal direct

A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis tool has been developed In order to study the effect of film cooling on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of actual turbine airfoils. An existing code (Amone et al., 1991) has been modified for the purpose. The code is an explicit, multigrid, ceil-centered, finite volume code with an algebraic turbulence model. Eigenvalue scaled artificial dissipation and variable-coefficient implicit residual smoothing are used with a full-multigrid technique. Moreover, Mayle’s transition criterion (Mayle, 1991) is used. Highly imperiled Oregon white oak ecosystems are a regional conservation priority of numerous organizations, including Oregon Metro, a regional government serving over one million people in the Portland area. Previously dominant systems in the Pacific Northwest, upland prairie and oak woodlands are now experiencing significant threat, with only 2% remaining in the Willamette Valley in small fragments (Hulse et al. 2002). These fragments are of high conservation value because of the rich biodiversity they support, including rare and endemic species, such as Delphinium leucophaeum (Oregon Depart
