Resumen
A mathematical framework called Microstructure Sensitive Design (MSD) has been developed recently to solve inverse problems of materials design, where the goal is to identify the class of microstructures that are predicted to satisfy a set of designer specified objectives and constraints [1]. This paper demonstrates the application of the MSD framework to a specific case study involving mechanical design. Processing solutions to obtain one of the elements of the desired class of textures are also explored within the same framework.

An ideal of a local polynomial ring can be described by calculating a standard basis with respect to a local monomial ordering. However the usual standard basis algorithms are not numerically stable. A numerically stable approach to describing the ideal is by finding the space of dual functionals that annihilate it, which reduces the problem to one of linear algebra. There are several known algorithms for finding the truncated dual up to any specified degree, which is useful for describing zero-dimensional ideals. AbstractThe present work investigates the influence of bubble clustering on the propagation of shock waves in bubbly liquids. A continuum model is developed to describe the macroscopic response of a bubbly liquid with a cluster structure, using a two-step homogenization technique. The proposed methodology allows us to simulate shock wave propagation over long distances with a small computation time and to study the effect of bubble clustering on the shock structure. It is shown that the typical length of the shock profile is related to the global response of the clusters instead of the single-

Resumen
Analyses were done on a human type-IV cyclic AMP (cAMP) phosphodiesterase (hPDE-IVA-h6.1) expressed in an engineered strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This strain (YMS6) expressed soluble PDE activity, together with an insoluble activity which was not released by re-homogenization, treatment with high-ionic-strength solutions or with the detergent Triton X-100. Pellet and soluble PDE activities were typical of type-IV PDE. They were cAMP-specific, insensitive to the addition of either cGMP (1 microM) or Ca2+/calmodulin, and inhibited by rolipram. Thermostability studies showed both activitie

The emergence of a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease during the bovine spongiform encephalopathy epidemic has focused attention on the use of tissue from the central nervous system (CNS) in food. So far, the banning of CNS tissue could not be effectively controlled because procedures for detection were missing. With regard to preventive health protection and labeling law enforcement, we have developed an integrated procedure for the detection of CNS tissue in meat products. Herein, we show that antigenic characteristics of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) quantitatively survive technologic

Brucellosis can be transmitted to man by direct contact with infected animals or through contaminated meat, milk and dairy products (Nicoletti, 1989). The analysis of Brucella spp. is carried out in the laboratory by microbiological or serological assays (Alton et al. 1988). The first are more specific but are also time-consuming and expose the analyst to the risk of infection (López-Merino, 1991). However, the latter can result in false positives owing to cross reactivity with other Gram-negative bacteria (Diaz-Aparicio et al. 1994). Because of these limitations, the amplification in vitro of

An antiserum was generated against a dodecapeptide whose sequence is found at the C-terminus of a cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific, type-IVA phosphodiesterase encoded by the rat ‘dunc-like’ cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase (RD1) cDNA. This antiserum identified a single approximately 73 kDa protein species upon immunoblotting of cerebellum homogenates. This species co-migrated upon SDS/PAGE with a single immunoreactive species observed in COS cells transfected with the cDNA for RD1. Native RD1 in cerebellum was found to be predominantly (approximately 93%) membrane-associated and could be found in isolat

This article examines the specifics of the income inequality structure in modern Russian society, as well as the tendencies for its change during the country’s post-Soviet period of development. It is shown that, compared to other countries, the traditional economic indexes which measure income inequality (decile ratio, Gini coefficient) position the Russian Federation as a country with a high degree of inequality within the mass layers of the population, especially when compared to Europe, albeit the level of inequality is slightly lower compared to BRICS member states. PurposeThe increasing globalization of business has led to increasing demand for executives who can function in cultural milieus different from their own. This demand has been exacerbated by the fact that globalization has not led to cultural homogenization and hence, for good or bad, executives are not able to universally apply the home country's conceptualizations of rights, responsibilities and duties and must operate within the constraints of host country's cultural environments. Hence, business scholars and global executives increasingly need to reflect on the conceptualization of rights,

Numerical finite element simulations on the homogenization problem for large random-aggregate samples of a particular 2D hexagonal-shape-geometry random polycrystals from the base crystals of orthorhombic symmetry have been performed. At sufficiently large random-aggregate samples, the scatter intervals converge toward the Voigt-Reuss-Hill bounds, and then our recently constructed bounds, which have been specified for the aggregates.

Resumen
A methodology for topology optimization to the design of compliant cellular mechanisms with and without internal contact is presented. A two-step procedure is pursued. First, a baseline noncontact mechanism is developed and optimized via an inverse homogenization method using the “solid isotropic material with penalization” approach. This compliant mechanism is optimized to yield specified elasticity coefficients, with the capability to sustain large effective strains by minimizing local linear elastic strain. In the second step, a system of internal contacts is designed. The initial continuum

We derive a cellular solids approach to the design of bone scaffolds for stiffness and pore size. Specifically, we focus on scaffolds made of stacked, alternating, orthogonal layers of hydroxyapatite rods, such as those obtained via micro-robotic deposition, and aim to determine the rod diameter, spacing and overlap required to obtain specified elastic moduli and pore size. To validate and calibrate the cellular solids model, we employ a finite element model and determine the effective scaffold moduli via numerical homogenization. In order to perform an efficient, automated execution of the nu

AbstractMechanical loading allows both investigation into the mechano-regulation of fracture healing as well as interventions to improve fracture-healing outcomes such as delayed healing or non-unions. However, loading is seldom individualised or even targeted to an effective mechanical stimulus level within the bone tissue. In this study, we use micro-finite element analysis to demonstrate the result of using a constant loading assumption for all mouse femurs in a given group. We then contrast this with the application of an adaptive loading approach, denoted real time Finite Element adaptati

Resumen
Thermal postbuckling of solid circular plates made of a through-the-thickness functionally graded material (FGM) is analyzed in this paper. Initial imperfection of the plate is also taken into account. Each thermomechanical property of the plate is assumed to be a function of the temperature and thickness coordinate. Equivalent properties of the FGM media are obtained based on three different homogenization schemes, namely, Voigt rule, Mori–Tanaka scheme, and self-consistent estimate. Temperature profile is assumed to be through-the-thickness direction only. The solution of the heat conduction
