Mass play (in which offensive players bunch together, typically including linemen moved into the backfield, to pound forward on a narrow spot in the defensive line) is growing in use by 1892 but is criticized as dangerous and hiding too much of the play. Camp responds in 1893, arguing in Harper’s Weekly that mass play should be allowed, but in limited amounts. He proposes a rule change to encourage teams to voluntarily try plays other than mass plays. The year 1892 also brings the addition of momentum plays (some offensive players are in forward motion before the ball is put in play), introduced by a Harvard kickoff play called the “flying wedge.” Camp is at first noncommittal on momentum plays. Overall, Camp likes to see imagination used to develop plays; he considers the exercise of imagination as “one of the chief charms” of American football. He also believes coaches are of value: any team “serious about winning” should have a coach.

The present work aims to analyze the challenge of organizing a science exhibition outside the common places (science museums, schools, universities).
