We consider optimal design for changepoint problems with particular attention paid to situations where the only possible change is in the mean. Optimal design for changepoint problems has only been addressed in an unpublished doctoral thesis, and in only one journal article, which was in a frequentist setting. The simplest situation we consider is that of a stochastic process that may undergo a, change at an unknown instant in some interval. The experimenter can take n measurements and is faced with one or more of the following optimal design problems: Where should these n observations be taken in order to best test for a change somewhere in the interval? Where should the observations be taken in order to best test for a change in a specified subinterval? Assuming that a change will take place, where should the observations be taken so that that one may best estimate the before-change mean as well as the after-change mean? We take a Bayesian approach, with a risk based on squared error loss, as a design criterion function for estimation, and a risk based on generalized 0-1 loss, for testing. We also use the Spezzaferri design criterion function for model discrimination, as an alternative criterion function for testing. By insisting that all observations are at least a minimum distance apart in order to ensure rough independence, we find the optimal design for all three problems. We ascertain the optimal designs by writing the design criterion functions as functions of the design measure, rather than of the designs themselves. We then use the geometric form of the design measure space and the concavity of the criterion function to find the optimal design measure. There is a straightforward correspondence between the set of design measures and the set of designs. Our approach is similar in spirit, although rather different in detail, from that introduced by Kiefer. In addition, we consider design for estimation of the changepoint itself, and optimal designs for the multipath changepoint problem. We demonstrate why the former problem most likely has a prior-dependent solution while the latter problems, in their most general settings, are complicated by the lack of concavity of the design criterion function.

The estimation of variance components serves as an integral part of the evaluation of variation, and is of interest and required in a variety of applications (Hugo, 2012). Estimation of the among-group variance components is often desired for quantifying the variability and effectively understanding these measurements (Van Der Rijst, 2006). The methodology for determining Bayesian tolerance intervals for the one – way random effects model has originally been proposed by Wolfinger (1998) using both informative and non-informative prior distributions (Hugo, 2012). Wolfinger (1998) also provided relationships with frequentist methodologies. From a Bayesian point of view, it is important to investigate and compare the effect on coverage probabilities if negative variance components are either replaced by zero, or completely disregarded from the simulation process. This research presents a simulation-based approach for determining Bayesian tolerance intervals in variance component models when negative variance components are either replaced by zero, or completely disregarded from the simulation process. This approach handles different kinds of tolerance intervals in a straightforward fashion. It makes use of a computer-generated sample (Monte Carlo process) from the joint posterior distribution of the mean and variance parameters to construct a sample from other relevant posterior distributions. This research makes use of only non-informative Jeffreys‟ prior distributions and uses three Bayesian simulation methods. Comparative results of different tolerance intervals obtained using a method where negative variance components are either replaced by zero or completely disregarded from the simulation process, is investigated and discussed in this research.

"We analyze mortality data from prostate, colon, lung, and all other types (called other cancer) to obtain age specific and age adjusted mortality rates for white males in the U.S. A related problem is to estimate the relative occurrences of these four types of cancer. We use Bayesian method because it permits a degree of smoothing which is needed to analyze data at a small area level and to assess the patterns. In the recent Atlas of the United States Mortality (1996) each type of cancer was analyzed individually. The difficulty in doing so is that there are many small areas with zero deaths. We conjecture that simultaneous analyses might help to overcome this problem, and at the same time to estimate the relative occurrences. We start with a Poisson model for the deaths, which produces a likelihood function that separates into two parts: a Poisson likelihood for the rates and a multinomial likelihood for the relative occurrences. These permit the use of a standard Poisson regression model on age as in Nandram, Sedransk and Pickle (1999), and the novelty is a multivariate logit model on the relative occurrences in which per capita income, the percent of people below poverty level, education (percent of people with four years of college) and two criteria pollutants, EPAPM25 and EPASO2, are used as covariates. We fitted the models using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. We used one of the models to present maps of occurrences and rates for the four types. An alternative model did not work well because it provides the same pattern by age and disease. We found that while EPAPM25 has a negative effect on the occurrences, EPASO2 has a positive effect. Also, we found some interesting patterns associated with the geographical variations of mortality rates and the relative occurrences of the four cancer types."

Resumen
Disease mapping and spatial statistics have become an important part of modern day statistics and have increased in popularity as the methods and techniques have evolved. The application of disease mapping is not only confined to the analysis of diseases as other applications of disease mapping can be found in Econometric and financial disciplines. This thesis will consider two data sets. These are the Georgia oral cancer 2004 data set and the South African acute pericarditis 2014 data set. The Georgia data set will be used to assess the hyperprior sensitivity of the precision for the uncorrelated heterogeneity and correlated heterogeneity components in a convolution model. The correlated heterogeneity will be modelled by a conditional autoregressive prior distribution and the uncorrelated heterogeneity will be modelled with a zero mean Gaussian prior distribution. The sensitivity analysis will be performed using three models with conjugate, Jeffreys' and a fixed parameter prior for the hyperprior distribution of the precision for the uncorrelated heterogeneity component. A simulation study will be done to compare four prior distributions which will be the conjugate, Jeffreys', probability matching and divergence priors. The three models will be fitted in WinBUGS® using a Bayesian approach. The results of the three models will be in the form of disease maps, figures and tables. The results show that the hyperprior of the precision for the uncorrelated heterogeneity and correlated heterogeneity components are sensitive to changes and will result in different results depending on the specification of the hyperprior distribution of the precision for the two components in the model. The South African data set will be used to examine whether there is a difference between the proper conditional autoregressive prior and intrinsic conditional autoregressive prior for the correlated heterogeneity component in a convolution model. Two models will be fitted in WinBUGS® for this comparison. Both the hyperpriors of the precision for the uncorrelated heterogeneity and correlated heterogeneity components will be modelled using a Jeffreys' prior distribution. The results show that there is no significant difference between the results of the model with a proper conditional autoregressive prior and intrinsic conditional autoregressive prior for the South African data, although there are a few disadvantages of using a proper conditional autoregressive prior for the correlated heterogeneity which will be stated in the conclusion.

Decision makers have long relied on experts to inform their decision making. Expert judgment analysis is a way to elicit and combine the opinions of a group of experts to facilitate decision making. The use of expert judgment is most appropriate when there is a lack of data for obtaining reasonable statistical results. The experts are asked for advice by one or more decision makers who face a specific real decision problem. The decision makers are outside the group of experts and are jointly responsible and accountable for the decision and committed to finding solutions that everyone can live with. The emphasis is on the decision makers learning from the experts. The focus of this thesis is an overview and comparison of the various elicitation and combination methods available. These include the traditional committee method, the Delphi method, the paired comparisons method, the negative exponential model, Cooke’s classical model, the histogram technique, using the Dirichlet distribution in the case of a set of uncertain proportions which must sum to one, and the employment of overfitting. The supra Bayes approach, the determination of weights for the experts, and combining the opinions of experts where each opinion is associated with a confidence level that represents the expert’s conviction of his own judgment are also considered.

Resumen
This thesis provides contributions to research in Bayesian modeling and shrinkage in the wavelet domain. Wavelets are a powerful tool to describe phenomena rapidly changing in time, and wavelet-based modeling has become a standard technique in many areas of statistics, and more broadly, in sciences and engineering. Bayesian modeling and estimation in the wavelet domain have found useful applications in nonparametric regression, image denoising, and many other areas. In this thesis, we build on the existing techniques and propose new methods for applications in nonparametric regression, image denoising, and partially linear models. The thesis consists of an overview chapter and four main topics. In Chapter 1, we provide an overview of recent developments and the current status of Bayesian wavelet shrinkage research. The chapter contains an extensive literature review consisting of almost 100 references. The main focus of the overview chapter is on nonparametric regression, where the observations come from an unknown function contaminated with Gaussian noise. We present many methods which employ model-based and adaptive shrinkage of the wavelet coefficients through Bayes rules. These includes new developments such as dependence models, complex wavelets, and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) strategies. Some applications of Bayesian wavelet shrinkage, such as curve classification, are discussed. In Chapter 2, we propose the Gibbs Sampling Wavelet Smoother (GSWS), an adaptive wavelet denoising methodology. We use the traditional mixture prior on the wavelet coefficients, but also formulate a fully Bayesian hierarchical model in the wavelet domain accounting for the uncertainty of the prior parameters by placing hyperpriors on them. Since a closed-form solution to the Bayes estimator does not exist, the procedure is computational, in which the posterior mean is computed via MCMC simulations. We show how to efficiently develop a Gibbs sampling algorithm for the proposed model. The developed procedure is fully Bayesian, is adaptive to the underlying signal, and provides good denoising performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. Application of the method is illustrated on a real data set arising from the analysis of metabolic pathways, where an iterative shrinkage procedure is developed to preserve the mass balance of the metabolites in the system. We also show how the methodology can be extended to complex wavelet bases. In Chapter 3, we propose a wavelet-based denoising methodology based on a Bayesian hierarchical model using a double Weibull prior. The interesting feature is that in contrast to the mixture priors traditionally used by some state-of-the-art methods, the wavelet coefficients are modeled by a single density. Two estimators are developed, one based on the posterior mean and the other based on the larger posterior mode; and we show how to calculate these estimators efficiently. The methodology provides good denoising performance, comparable even to state-of-the-art methods that use a mixture prior and an empirical Bayes setting of hyperparameters; this is demonstrated by simulations on standard test functions. An application to a real-word data set is also considered. In Chapter 4, we propose a wavelet shrinkage method based on a neighborhood of wavelet coefficients, which includes two neighboring coefficients and a parental coefficient. The methodology is called Lambda-neighborhood wavelet shrinkage, motivated by the shape of the considered neighborhood. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model using a contaminated exponential prior on the total mean energy in the Lambda-neighborhood. The hyperparameters in the model are estimated by the empirical Bayes method, and the posterior mean, median, and Bayes factor are obtained and used in the estimation of the total mean energy. Shrinkage of the neighboring coefficients is based on the ratio of the estimated and observed energy. The proposed methodology is comparable and often superior to several established wavelet denoising methods that utilize neighboring information, which is demonstrated by extensive simulations. An application to a real-world data set from inductance plethysmography is considered, and an extension to image denoising is discussed. In Chapter 5, we propose a wavelet-based methodology for estimation and variable selection in partially linear models. The inference is conducted in the wavelet domain, which provides a sparse and localized decomposition appropriate for nonparametric components with various degrees of smoothness. A hierarchical Bayes model is formulated on the parameters of this representation, where the estimation and variable selection is performed by a Gibbs sampling procedure. For both the parametric and nonparametric part of the model we are using point-mass-at-zero contamination priors with a double exponential spread distribution. In this sense we extend the model of Chapter 2 to partially linear models. Only a few papers in the area of partially linear wavelet models exist, and we show that the proposed methodology is often superior to the existing methods with respect to the task of estimating model parameters. Moreover, the method is able to perform Bayesian variable selection by a stochastic search for the parametric part of the model.

The Bayesian theory has long been the predominate method in dealing with uncertainties in civil engineering practice including water resources engineering. However, it imposes unnecessary restrictive requirements on inferential problems. Concerns thus arise about the effectiveness of using Bayesian theory in dealing with more general inferential problems. The recently developed Dempster-Shafer theory appears to be able to surmount the limitations of Bayesian theory. The new theory was originally proposed as a pure mathematical theory. A reasonable amount of work has been done in trying to adopt this new theory in practice, most of this work being related to inexact inference in expert systems and all of the work still remaining in the fundamental stage. The purpose of this research is first to compare the two theories and second to try to apply Dempster-Shafer theory in solving real problems in water resources engineering. In comparing Bayesian and Dempster-Shafer theory, the equivalent situation between these two theories under a special situation is discussed first. The divergence of results from Dempster-Shafer and Bayesian approaches under more general situations where Bayesian theory is unsatisfactory is then examined. Following this, the conceptual difference between the two theories is argued. Also discussed in the first part of this research is the issue of dealing with evidence including classifying sources of evidence and expressing them through belief functions. In attempting to adopt Dempster-Shafer theory in engineering practice, the Dempster-Shafer decision theory, i.e. the application of Dempster-Shafer theory within the framework of conventional decision theory, is introduced. The application of this new decision theory is demonstrated through a water resources engineering design example.

Resumen
Analytical problems caused by over-fitting, confounding and non-independence in the data is a major challenge for variable selection. As more variables are tested against a certain data set, there is a greater risk that some will explain the data merely by chance, but will fail to explain new data. The main aim of this study is to employ a systematic and practicable variable selection process for the spatial analysis and mapping of historical malaria risk in Botswana using data collected from the MARA (Mapping Malaria Risk in Africa) project and environmental and climatic datasets from various sources. Details of how a spatial database is compiled for a statistical analysis to proceed is provided. The automation of the entire process is also explored. The final bayesian spatial model derived from the non-spatial variable selection procedure using Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation was fitted to the data. Winter temperature had the greatest effect of malaria prevalence in Botswana. Summer rainfall, maximum temperature of the warmest month, annual range of temperature, altitude and distance to closest water source were also significantly associated with malaria prevalence in the final spatial model after accounting for spatial correlation. Using this spatial model malaria prevalence at unobserved locations was predicted, producing a smooth risk map covering Botswana. The automation of both compiling the spatial database and the variable selection procedure proved challenging and could only be achieved in parts of the process. The non-spatial selection procedure proved practical and was able to identify stable explanatory variables and provide an objective means for selecting one variable over another, however ultimately it was not entirely successful due to the fact that a unique set of spatial variables could not be selected.
