Hamilton Street Railway, the city of Hamilton, Ontario’s public transportation system, has a long history. The system was first run by horse-drawn cars, but was electrified in 1892 — around the same time that innovation surrounding electricity transmission came to Hamilton. It consisted of various routes around the city, including the “Belt Line,” which connected the east and west ends of the city. The system, along with four interurban lines that went to Burlington, Beamsville, Dundas, and Brantford, were eventually purchased by the utility company, Dominion Power and Transmission. The street

The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Coal Harbour in 1887 challenged the traditional public water access to the Burrard Inlet, as the street-end location at the foot of Carrall Street was the longstanding water access to the preceding community of Gastown. Vancouver City Wharf, the would-be public dock, shared this favoured location with boatbuilder Andrew Linton. City Wharf was sold to Union Steamships in 1889, which was a company that understood the meaning of being at this critical historical node. In Lviv, initially, loans secured by property were provided by wealthy burghers, and later the first credit institutions were established under the largest Lviv denominations, which were replaced by classical banking institutions. They have been described as “magician’s hats” due to their ability to reveal much more than they seem to contain (Wheaton, “Finding”). The spread of literacy between 1500 and 1800, and the rise in silent reading, helped to create a new private sphere into which the individual could retreat, seeking refuge from the community (Chartier).
