Teaching is considered one such stressful occupation. So, this study was conducted to assess the magnitude of burnout among school teachers of Tamil Nadu and to determine the various factors contributing to burnout syndrome. Methods: Descriptive survey method was employed for the present study. A sample of 251 government school teachers was taken by using convenient sampling technique. Teachers’ burnout scale by Gupta and Rani was used to collect the data. The obtained data was statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA.Results: The magnitude of burnout was not high in government school teachers. However, the factors like working in high school, urban school, having spouse as a teacher, chronic illness and increased travel time to school, were found to be associated with higher burn out. Conclusions: Teachers have direct interaction with the students, shared responsibility with colleagues, adjusting with institutional conditions and handling various tasks and challenges put them at a high stress. Health system of India is having many health programmes in schools which are related student’s health but the teacher’s health is left behind. Screening teachers for stress, burnout and other occupational psychosocial hazard will help them improving their life and student’s education.

Resumen
Abstract Sri Lanka is a conflict-ridden postcolonial nation-state that was ravaged by a civil war. Largely excluded from mainstream representations of the ethnic conflict, Muslims constitute the country’s second largest minority group. In contrast to Sinhalas and Tamils, they define their ethnic identities on the basis of religion rather than language. In this article, I draw on research at a multilingual government school to explore how Muslim teachers and students made sense of Tamil- and English-medium education in relation to ethnic, religious, and class differences. I investigate how Tamil-medium Muslim teachers responded to critiques of their speech by asserting that their heterogeneous linguistic practices were inextricably connected to their distinct ethno-religious identities. Muslim students’ lack of fit with the ethnolinguistic affiliations presupposed by the school enabled them to embrace English-medium education. However, the English bilingual program complicated Muslims’ narratives of identity by underscoring the relevance of English to class dispositions. I argue that English impacts the fraught relations of Tamil and Sinhala to ethnopolitical identities and mediates everyday social relations.

Resumen
<div><p><em>It is obvious that quality of teaching force is not governed only by the qualification, pedagogical knowledge and teaching skill of teachers, but also their enthusiasm, motivation, dedication and commitment in teaching. Student teachers have a substantial impact on the education of future generations. In order for a system of teacher education to be effective, it needs to recognize and build on the characteristics and motivations that student teachers bring with them when they enter teacher education program after their completion of graduation or post graduation. Holistic teacher building is necessary and therefore teacher education needed more emphasis than mere training by high positive motivation of the student teachers for choosing the teaching as their calling. The data for the present study were collected from a population of student teachers. In the present study, Survey Method is employed to describe and interpret. The sample size chosen for B.Ed., student teachers are 500 (250 Male and 250 Female) of the Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu, India. The findings revealed that female student teachers have manifested significantly higher level in all the selected variables when compared to their counter parts. The independent variables such as positive and negative emotion, altruism, moral value, teacher's attitude and personal and social influence correlate significantly with motivation positively. The coefficient of determination R square measures the goodness-of-fit with the value of 0.249 and this means that the independent variables contributes to the extent of 24.9% to motivation and it is significant at 1% level. </em></p></div>

Resumen
Introduction: Children and young people in India have a high prevalence of dental decay. As part of a broader epidemiological study, we interviewed 10 head teachers to understand the status of, and challenges to, inclusion of oral health education in the curricula of public and private schools in Tamil Nadu, India. Objectives: The two main objectives of this study were (1) to describe the views of head teachers about the implementation of oral health education in school curricula and (2) to identify challenges to achieving oral health education in public and private schools in Tamil Nadu. Method: Qualitative descriptive design, with a purposive sample of 10 head teachers who participated in semi-structured interviews. Thematic coding was used to analyse and report on the data. Results: There is a lack of oral health education in public and private schools in Tamil Nadu, India. Four main types of barriers to the initiation and implementation of oral health education were lack of recognition, academic burden, prioritisation of other health needs and policy inequities. Head teachers acknowledged the lack of oral health education in their schools, yet also acknowledged the importance of oral health education in promoting students’ health. Conclusion: Health curricula in Tamil Nadu schools lack integration of oral health education. Limited access to the services, cultural factors, policy deficiencies, insufficient awareness among policy-makers, the nature of the education system and lack of research contribute to the current situation. Policy-makers should address these barriers to enable and promote oral health education strategies in both private and public schools of Tamil Nadu.

Resumen
Teachers’ role in society in general and in education has been changing with time but the importance of this position is same. The teacher is the pre-requisite of the success of educational programmes. The main quality of teacher is the positive attitude towards education. One of the effective factors on job satisfaction is perceived social support by individuals. One of the psychological concepts that have been introduced by scientists of educational science is social support. It was among the basic needs of human beings throughout the history.Data were collected from70 males and 312 female teachersworking in both rural and urban schools in Tiruchirappalli revenue district using systematic random sampling techniques. The results reveal that there is no relationship between social economic variables (gender, age, and education) and social support; however marital status and income are positively associated with social support. The results further expose that social economic variables (age and education)are negatively linked with job satisfaction. Hence, better social support and higher job satisfaction of teachers.

Resumen
This paper explores the possibilities and challenges for ethno-religious reconciliation through secondary school education in post-war Sri Lanka, with a specific focus on the Muslim and Tamil communities in the Northern city of Jaffna. In doing so, we position our paper within the growing field of ‘education, conflict and emergencies’ of which there has been a growing body of literature discussing this contentious relationship. The paper draws from an interdisciplinary and critical theoretical framework that aims to analyse the role of education for peacebuilding, through a multi-scalar application of four interconnected dimensions of social justice: redistribution, recognition, representation and reconciliation (or 4 R’s, Novelli, Lopes Cardozo and Smith, 2015). We apply this framework to interpret primary data collected through an ethnographic study of two under-studied communities that have been disproportionately affected by the 1983 to 2009 civil war and displacement: the Northern Sri Lankan Muslims and Northern Sri Lankan Tamils. We find that structural inequalities in society are replicated in formal secondary school education and are perceived to be perpetuating ethno-religious conflict between Muslim and Tamil; second, through a multi-scalar analysis, formal peace education is perceived by respondents not to be meeting the needs of communities; and third, we observe how in response to failings of state peace education, an ‘unofficial’ Tamil–Muslim community education incorporating a social justice-based approach has emerged. This has facilitated a process of cross-community reconciliation between Muslim and Tamil through individual (teachers, students) and community (Muslim–Tamil community based organisations) agency. The paper concludes by offering suggestions for peace education policy and future research.

Resumen
AbstractTo code-switch or not to code-switch? This is a dilemma for many bilingual language teachers. In this study, the influence of teachers’ CS on bilingual children's language and cognitive development is explored within heritage language (HL) classes in Singapore. Specifically, the relationship between children's language output, vocabulary development, and cognitive flexibility to teachers’ classroom CS behavior, is examined within 20 preschool HL classrooms (10 Mandarin, 6 Malay, and 4 Tamil). Teachers’ and children's utterances were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for CS frequency and type (i.e., inter-sentential, intra-sentential). 173 students were assessed with receptive vocabulary and dimensional card sort tasks, and their vocabulary and cognitive switching scores assessed using correlational and mixed effects analyses. Results show that inter-sentential and intra-sentential CS frequency is positively and significantly related to children's intra-sentential CS frequency. Overall, findings revealed that teachers code-switched habitually more often than for instructional purposes. Neither inter-sentential nor intra-sentential CS was significantly related to children's development in HL vocabulary, and intra-sentential CS was found to positively and significantly relate to children's growth in cognitive flexibility. These findings reveal the multi-faceted impact of teacher's CS on children's early development.

Resumen
Pillaitamizh is a unique, short literary work in Tamil which stands out amidst the multiple short literary formats in Tamil language. Gods, Goddesses, Kings, Queens, nobles or learned teachers are personified as small children and the poetical work is structured as ten stages of growth starting from the first month after birth to about ten to twelve years of age. This format of poetry not only depicts the various beauties and nuances of Tamil language but also reflects upon the way of family life, different aspects of scientific thoughts, religious and philosophical norms, formats of worship, the psychology of the mother and the child to name a few. Some of these features are highlighted in this article and the conclusion that this is a complete and unique poetic structure par excellence is arrived at.

Virtual reality (VR) is a technology which allows a user to interact with a computer-simulated imaginary environment. Users can interact with a virtual environment through the keyboard and mouse or special devices. Virtual reality can be defined as an upcoming technology that makes users feel in a Virtual Environment (VE) by using computer hardware and software. VR provides a different way to see and experience information, one that is dynamic and immediate. This paper explains the different models of VR devices in the world. The aim of the research is to identify the level of awareness of virtual technology in the B.Ed college student-teachers in the Tamil Nadu State of India. A descriptive survey method to adopt and a total of 350 first year student-teachers from Seven B.Ed Colleges in and around Salem district of Tamil Nadu were selected by using simple random sampling technique. An awareness of virtual technology (AVT) tool with 0.89 reliability and known content validity was used. The calculated ‘t' value among student-teachers with respect to gender; mobile in the home; to having PC in the home; and net course already passed significantly differ at 0.05 level could be noticed as rejected these hypotheses. Whereas locality and type of college of education are accepted the hypothesis. Postgraduate qualified student teachers had better awareness than undergraduate qualified student-teachers. The author recommends the students may be encouraged to use the network in their home.

Resumen
Stress at work place is a barometer of the health of an organization. Prolonged stress in any employee leads to professional burnout. This study examined the relationship between professional burnout and occupational stress due to personal & professional efficiency of teachers working at university level. Rating Scales were administered on a sample of 955 university teachers from 9 universities of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu who were chosen by using Simple Random Sampling Technique. The statistical techniques employed were percentage, mean, SD, mean ± 1SD, and also correlations computed to analyze the obtained data. Results of the study revealed that around 86% of university teachers are experiencing moderate and high levels of professional burnout and around 60% of them are showing moderate level of occupational stress due to personal & professional efficiency. Further, correlation studies revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between professional burnout and occupational stress due to personal & professional efficiency. The results reinforce the need for interventions in strengthening and reinforcing teacher’s self-confidence and positive attitude, and weakening the stress and burnout causing factors. Much of the stress and burnout can be minimized through support, persistence, problem solving, active decision making and planning, organizational adaptability and developing good human relations.

Resumen
The study aims to empirically test the moderation effect of transformational leadership characteristic on the relationship between work-family conflict and professional commitment among school teachers. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 752 teachers currently working in private schools from selected districts in Tamil Nadu, India. Purposive sampling technique is used, and data were collected using a questionnaire. The moderating effect of transformational leadership behavior is examined using hierarchical regression analysis. Grounded with the conservation of resource theory (COR) and transformational leadership theory, the results supported the negative impact of work-family conflict on the professional commitment of teachers. Further, the moderation effect of transformational leadership found to reverse the negative relationship between work-family conflict and professional commitment. Thus, the transformational leadership behavior of leaders (head/principal) was found to foster the professional commitment of teachers. This study is focused only on the dimensions of transformational characteristics on the relationship between work-family conflict and professional commitment of teachers. Also, it would be constructive to examine other mediating or moderating impacts of variables such as peer support, job satisfaction, which can also have a significant impact. Further, the outcome variable related to the perspective of students can also be researched.

Resumen
This study was designed and aimed at identifying the awareness and practices of multicultural awareness among primary school teachers in Malaysia. It attempts to identify their awareness of multicultural concept when dealing with their students and staffs at their school. This awareness was measured by three variables: awareness, knowledge and skills. A number of 41 questions which inquired about the three variables were distributed randomly to 50 primary school teachers in Malaysia. These teachers were from three ethic types of primary schools: Tamil, Chinese and Malay primary schools. The reason for choosing the three different mainstream schools was because they represented the main different multicultural practices in the country. From these participants, five teachers were selected for further interviews to obtain richer data. The findings revealed that the awareness of multicultural education among primary school teachers was still at the medium level. Thus, this study suggests that there should be a multicultural awareness campaign at all schools in Malaysia in order to ensure that each student, no matter from what backgrounds they are from, feel they are part of the Malaysian society as a whole. The study also found that the awareness should start from the home, environment and peer and through parental guidance because school is a bridge between home and the society that will form one Malaysian society to achieve vision 2020.

Resumen
Background: HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed 36.3 million lives so far. India has the third largest HIV epidemic in the world, with 2.1 million people living with HIV. Epidemiological data on AIDS suggests that in many cases, HIV infection was acquired during adolescence and lack of knowledge is one of the most important reasons. Hence, an ardent need was felt to assess the knowledge and beliefs of adolescents regarding AIDS. The main objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and beliefs regarding AIDS among higher secondary students of rural schools in South Kerala and in South Tamil Nadu. Methods: After getting ethical committee clearance, the study was conducted among higher secondary students of twelfth standard using a predesigned and validated self-administered questionnaire. An educational intervention regarding AIDS lasting for 30 min was given after the test. Data analysis was done using appropriate software. Results: The mean knowledge scores of students from Kerala (11.57) and Tamil Nadu (11.51) were almost same. Television, newspaper and teachers were the main source of information about AIDS. Beliefs like Whiteman’s disease can spread through mosquito bite, sharing vessels and giving shake hands/touching were highly prevalent in the study subjects. Conclusions: Proper emphasis should be given to teachers on mentoring adolescents and imparting them with the needed knowledge on HIV/AIDS to enable them to overcome this period of stress and storm.

Resumen
A critical study is conducted in a premier Engineering college in Tamil Nadu. This Institution enjoys an excellent status in terms of admissions, extra-curricular activities and placement. Meritorious students with high scores in plus two are admitted every year. The institution takes up a series of steps to improve the communication skills of learners. Despite these efforts, many final year students are unfit to be placed due to low proficiency in the basic skills of English language. Hence the study aims at identifying their problems with communication skills, analyzing the causes and suggesting remedies for improvement. Every class room has a heterogeneous group of students from different educational streams such as- CBSE, matriculation and state board. A majority of students have had their schooling in Tamil medium. Further, they hail from different backgrounds, rural, semirural and urban. Technical English is included in the curriculum only in first and second semesters, where concentration is on teaching grammar items. In the fifth semester, every branch of students is given a three hour training per week in the communication lab. The study reveals that the learners indifference and lack of intrinsic motivation is the prime cause for low proficiency. The evaluation system compels the faculty to complete the syllabus from an examination point of view. This is another handicap which prevents the teachers from imparting the required communication competency within the prescribed hours. It is hoped that this study will create awareness among the language teachers to discover more efficient methods to cope up with the learners need.

Resumen
Bilingual Education was introduced to Sri Lanka in 2001, initially through Amity School Programs. In this Bilingual Program, English is the medium of instruction in selected subjects from grade 6 to grade 11. The students of Bilingual Program are expected to be competent both in First Language- L1 (Sinhala/Tamil) and Target Language (English). However, the students find it difficult to express themselves in English especially in academic performances. The research findings of NIE, 2007, too, correspond with the relevant observation. I adapted the descriptive method to collect data by giving questionnaires to students in the sample of 60 students and 20 teachers including English teachers, non – English teachers who work in the Bilingual Program and teachers who work in Activity Based Oral English (ABOE) Program in primary education. An analysis of collected data suggests a 65% of the sample is not expressive themselves in English, especially in academic performances. This revelation is important because it helps to anticipate the propositions find in Bilingual Education and to take necessary steps to guide its move. In this paper, I try to interpret the difficulties in speaking in English faced by students in the Bilingual Education Program with the help of theoretical explanation.

Resumen
Service Learning enhances and intensifies classroom learning which paves the way for practical community-based problem solving skills to students. The context of Service Learning at Loyola College, Chennai offers students an opportunity to explore the connections between the theoretical realm of the classroom and the practical needs of the community. In this connection, School of Service Learning at Loyola College is making the students to reflect about the experience in order to maximize the benefit of service in learning experiences. Therefore, this is an important process that links Service and academic learning. At the next level, it really motivates students to be human and also humane. Exposure to urban poor in the informal settlements of Chennai city makes undergraduate students of Loyola College to become aware about the issues faced by urban poor. Post graduate courses students gain exposure on rural interior villages which makes PG students to realize stark naked realities of the rural folk. Cognitive development is assured through formal Learning and teaching in the classroom by their respective teachers. Theoretical and Conceptual teaching could not provide holistic knowledge to students. This requirement is beautifully addressed by the School of Service Learning through its various activities and programmes with the constant guidance of professional social workers and Management.

Resumen
School students need clear boundaries: boundaries that adults - parents as well as teachers - must set. We cannot abdicate our responsibility when students move outside those boundaries. To do that is to betray children, because the consequences of bad behaviour are so damaging It is the duty of the parents and teachers to create disciplinary awareness. The study aimed to examine the disciplinary awareness among secondary school students. The investigator adopted survey method to study the disciplinary awareness among school students. Resumen
English is now introduced in grade 6 once the children finish their primary education in vernacular. The main aspect of the way in which English is used as medium of instruction is that in government schools some subjects are taught in English while some other subjects are taught in Tamil. This helps the students be balanced bilinguals because they constantly learn their first language while acquiring mastery in L2. Eventually, it is assumed that this will facilitate the additive bilingualism and children would be balanced bilinguals. This paper tried to appraise the potential success of one decade –long English medium program and also see the different perspectives of the stakeholders involved in the English medium education. This study captured the views of parents, teachers and children: English medium and vernacular children.

Abstract: The struggle to uphold the Malay language is at all levels, at the individual level, associations and political organizations. This effort has given a bit of conviction to the younger generation that the struggle to uphold the Malay language is not an easy struggle. It provides a clear picture that the Malay language is believed to be believed to be capable of acting as a national unity tool and capable of raising the common identity among the people since independence. Therefore, the learning and facilitator (PdPc) of Malay should not only emphasize the mastery of the language system and language skills but instead enrich the tradition of thought, value and culture of knowledge capable of bringing the younger generation towards achieving the goal of national unity. Hence, this study aims to explore the potential of language philosophy in Malay language learning and facilitator (PdPc) for national integration. The data collection was carried out through survey method using questionnaire on 200 participants of the study which included teachers in Bahasa Melayu who taught at. (SJKC) and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) in Perak, Kelantan, Penang and Negeri Sembilan. Data analysis is divided into four main themes, namely: (1) Teacher perceptions about the concept of language philosophy in Malay language education, (2) Teacher perceptions on the concept of national integration in relation to Malay education, (3) Teacher skill level in the absorption aspects the element of language philosophy in Malay Language PdPc, and (4) The level of teacher acceptance towards the absorption of the element of the language philosophy in PdPc Bahasa Melayu as a National integration strategy. The findings of the study of the Malay language teachers are very important to policy makers in ensuring the Malay Language PdPc in schools is able to build the value and personality of Malaysia among the various ethnic groups.

Resumen
The impact of natural disasters on individuals is substantial. Among the affected population in any disaster, children are identified as the most vulnerable group along with women, aged and disabled people. An estimated 77 million children under 15, on average, had their lives severely disrupted by a natural disaster or an armed conflict, each year, between 1991 and 2000 (Plan UK, 2003). Children are most affected since they loose the familiar environment, loss of parents, witness death of their loved ones, fear of reoccurrence of the disaster event. The impact of disaster on children of different age group is multiple times greater than that of the adults. This leads to various psychological problems in children (Dave et al., 2003). Disaster preparedness, through care givers, is one among the ways to reduce the distress of individuals followed by any disaster because it reduces the vulnerability factor that minimizes the impact of any disaster on the individual. A disaster preparedness program with special reference to psychosocial aspects was developed and implemented among the school children through teachers in Kanniyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India, one of the severely affected areas in Tsunami. The current attempt was to standardize a disaster preparedness module focusing on preparing children to deal with their psychosocial issues before and after disaster in an effective manner. The outcome of disaster preparedness input through teachers and its reach out to the students was determined through an experimental research. The results reveal that the teachers and students from the experimental group gained significantly more knowledge on psychosocial disaster preparedness after implementation of the program in comparison to control group where the program was not implemented. The implications of the study points out the need to integrate psychosocial component of disaster preparedness in to the broader Community Based Disaster Preparedness (CBDP) programs.
